What was happening in the backdrop of this war, was another war. The one that attacked systems, Ukraine, gave a shout-out to &lsquo;hacktivists&rsquo; to look for vulnerabilities. WION spoke to one such active member, who has helped in finding vulnerabilities in Moscow's systems like Moscow Metro, Gazprom, Russian Central Bank, and more. On Monday (Mar 31), when people were opening Mosow Metro website, it was leading them to Ukrainian Railways Ukrzaliznytsia homepage. In the past, the Russian Central Bank was hacked, where the systems had paused for considerable mount of time.&nbsp;
Uzair Sheikh (name changed), security researcher, said, "Amid the ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the cyber front seems to be reaching new highs and lows with several data leakages as well as important websites either being taken down or getting defaced."

He added, "Ukraine has surely played a great move by raising a cyber army of volunteers worldwide sharing the same motive of revenge against Russia, but unfortunately, I also believe that innocent businesses are taking a hit because of this."

On Tuesday, the company said that its profits have fallen by 41 per cent in the aftermath of the Ukraine conflict. This is primarily due to a tax hike.&nbsp;The company's financial report for 2022 reveals a profit of 1.2 trillion rubles ($15 billion), a substantial decrease from the 2.1 trillion rubles recorded in the previous year.

As per a statement by the company, due to the drop in profit, the board has recommended the withholding of dividend payouts.

The company in a statement carried by Russian news agencies, revealed that the increase in tax payments during the second half of the year had a direct impact on profit margins.&nbsp;

Gazprom's operations have been severely affected by Western sanctions, which have targeted the state-owned enterprise led by Alexei Miller, a close associate of President Vladimir Putin.&nbsp;

As a result, European imports of pipeline natural gas from Russia plunged by 55 per cent in 2022, according to the Gas Exporting Country Forum's report released this month.

<h2>How did Gazprom deal with the sanctions?</h2>

To counterbalance the limitations imposed by the European market, except for liquefied natural gas purchases, Gazprom as per the news agency AFP has strategically sought to pivot towards Asia. In this, China, in particular, has emerged as a crucial economic partner for Russia, especially since the West implemented unprecedented sanctions following Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine.

Gazprom announced in March that it had achieved a record in daily gas volumes supplied to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline. Furthermore, the total deliveries through the pipeline reached an all-time high of 15.5 billion cubic metres in the previous year.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the Russian state-owned gas company on Tuesday informed that gas deliveries to Engie, France's biggest supplier of gas to households and businesses&nbsp;will be reduced, starting today due to a dispute over contracts.&nbsp;

"There will be&nbsp;a reduction in gas deliveries, starting today, due to a disagreement between the parties on the application of some contracts." Engie informed about Gazprom's notice.&nbsp;

The French company further added that it had put measures in place to brave the reduction in supplies.

"Engie had already secured the volumes necessary to meet its commitments towards its customers and its own requirements, and put in place several measures to significantly reduce any direct financial and physical impacts that could result from an interruption to gas supplies by Gazprom." stated the company in a statement.&nbsp;

However, neither Gazprom nor Engie informed about the nature of the dispute with the former not releasing any statement.&nbsp;

In the aftermath of the announcement, French energy minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher stated that the fresh supply cuts should egg France to fully end its dependence on French supplies.&nbsp;

“Russia is using gas like a war weapon.&nbsp;We must prepare for the worst, a total interruption of deliveries.” said&nbsp;Runacher.

It is pertinent to note that Gazprom's reduction in the supply comes in the backdrop of the company announcing earlier this month that the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will remain shut down for three days for 'routine maintenance', starting tomorrow i.e August 31.

"There will be a reduction in gas deliveries, starting today, due to a disagreement between the parties on the application of some contracts." Engie informed about Gazprom's notice. The French company further added that it had put measures in place to brave the reduction in supplies. "Engie had already secured the volumes necessary to meet its commitments towards its customers and its own requirements, and put in place several measures to significantly reduce any direct financial and physical impacts that could result from an interruption to gas supplies by Gazprom." stated the company in a statement. However, neither Gazprom nor Engie informed about the nature of the dispute with the former not releasing any statement. In the aftermath of the announcement, French energy minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher stated that the fresh supply cuts should egg France to fully end its dependence on French supplies. “Russia is using gas like a war weapon. We must prepare for the worst, a total interruption of deliveries.” said Runacher. Nord Stream 1 pipeline will close from tomorrow It is pertinent to note that Gazprom's reduction in the supply comes in the backdrop of the company announcing earlier this month that the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will remain shut down for three days for 'routine maintenance', starting tomorrow i.e August 31. While most European nations are facing soaring prices, very few have capped the prices. Of the major countries, it is France that has put a four per cent cap on gas prices up until the end of the year. Winter is coming and with it Germany faces the looming threat of an energy shortage. To deal with this threat, the nation's government has approved a new bylaw that will turn buildings colder and leave streets darker.

The law prohibits heating public spaces like town halls and train waiting rooms above 19 degrees Celsius (66.2F). However, social institutions like hospitals are exempted from this rule.

As per Guardian, the legislation will come into force in about a week's time and will remain in place for six months.&nbsp;

There's an energy standoff between Russia and European Union which is likely to deepen Russia's state-owned energy company gas. According to reports, the Nord stream 1 pipeline will be shut down once again for 3 days.

Amid the Russia-Ukraine war and the western world attempting to push Kremlin into the corner by imposing sanctions, the West Asian country of Saudi Arabia is busy playing its own game. Reportedly, Saudi Arabia's Kingdom Holding on Sunday announced that it had invested in top Russian energy companies viz. Gazprom, Lukoil and Rosneft.

Kingdom Holding took to Twitter to share the news of its $3.4 billion investment program. The company stated&nbsp;that it had completed the investment in Russian companies within a one-month period from February to March, earlier this year.&nbsp;

This development comes on the back of Saudi Arabia joining the growing list of countries importing cheap Russian oil despite Western sanctions. As reported by WION, the Gulf country imported 647,000 tonnes of Russian oil in the second quarter, i.e., from April to June. In the same period a year ago, the Kingdom imported 320,000 tonnes of oil.

Experts are of the view that Russian oil is far too cheap for Saudi Arabia to resist the temptation of buying it. The investment in top Russian energy companies only makes further sense as the war continues to linger.&nbsp;

It is pertinent to note that Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal owns the majority of shares in Kingdom Holding. However, earlier this year in May, Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund acquired a 16.87 per cent stake in the company.&nbsp;

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, the western world has imposed myriad sanctions on Russian companies to hurt Moscow financially. However, the Western sanctions have cleverly circumvented&nbsp;any major oil and energy companies.

Taking to Reuters, Svend-Joerk Sobolewski said that in the case of any rationing, the industry should be prioritised because most crematoriums require gas to operate.

According to statistics from the German undertakers’ association, about three-quarters of the approximately one million persons who pass away each year in Germany are cremated.

That is a high rate when compared to other European nations, said Stephan Neuser, Germany’s cremation consortium’s executive director while talking to Reuters.

As the gas crisis looms over Germany due to the Ukraine war, reports say German authorities are imposing stringent measures to ensure fountains, central heating and other energy guzzlers are kept in control.

Germany has been dependent on Russian gas which has helped to power&nbsp;the country&nbsp;however reports say Russian supplies have fallen dramatically as Europe has imposed sanctions on Putin's regime after the Russian president announced his "special military operation" against Ukraine in February.

Similar action will be undertaken in Nuremberg which said it will be closing four indoor swimming pools.

The European Union has vowed to cut gas consumption by 15 per cent from August.

German authorities had said earlier that Russia's Gazprom has&nbsp;drastically cut gas supplies to Europe even as the company claimed "technical condition of the engine" as the reason behind the problem. However, Germany's economic ministry dismissed Russia's explanation as the EU alleged Russia has squeezed gas supplies in retaliation against Western sanctions due to the Ukraine war.

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov blamed EU sanctions for the limited supply.

"Gazprom was and remains a reliable guarantor of its obligations... but it can't guarantee the pumping of gas if the imported devices cannot be maintained because of European sanctions," Peskov&nbsp;said as Europe struggles to ensure gas supplies from Russia.
