A report by Reuters citing a source close to the talks said that the discussions will be in direct response to a new proposal from Hamas and will focus on the remaining gaps between Israel and the militant group.&nbsp;

Last week, Hamas proposed a new ceasefire deal to mediators and Israel’s ally the United States which would see the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for freeing Palestinian prisoners.&nbsp;

In a separate report, Reuters citing an&nbsp;Israeli official confirmed that the&nbsp;negotiators are expected in Doha, on Monday to secure a&nbsp;six-week truce with Hamas and the release of 40 hostages.

The negotiations will reportedly take&nbsp;at least two weeks, said the Israeli official citing&nbsp;difficulties communicating with&nbsp;Hamas'&nbsp;delegates in Gaza amid the ongoing war.&nbsp;

A report by AFP citing a source also said&nbsp;Barnea will hold talks with&nbsp;Qatar PM Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and Egyptian envoys.&nbsp;

Netanyahu, on Sunday (Mar 17) questioned if the international community had forgotten the October 7 attack as several countries have expressed concerns over Israel’s plans to send troops into Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah where more than a million Palestinians have sought refuge amid the ongoing war.&nbsp;

“To our friends in the international community, I say: Is your memory so short? So quickly you forgot about October 7, the worst massacre committed against Jews since the Holocaust?”&nbsp;

The Israeli PM also vowed that he would send troops to Rafah and that no amount of international pressure would stop Israel from achieving its war aims.

Israeli military officials have claimed that Rafah is Hamas’ last stronghold in Gaza and that there are thousands of militants as well as senior leaders present there.&nbsp;

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, urged Israel “in the name of humanity” to not go ahead with the assault on Rafah and warned that “this humanitarian catastrophe must not be allowed to worsen”.

"The path to a ceasefire right now literally at this hour is straightforward. And there's a deal on the table. There's a framework deal. The Israelis have more or less accepted it," the official told reporters, adding, that the onus was on Hamas.&nbsp;

Mediators have been scrambling to lock in a truce before Ramadan, eyeing an end to the conflict that has been going on for nearly five months.&nbsp;

The above developments came as the US carried out the first of what it said would be a series of humanitarian airdrops of food into Gaza. A report by the news agency Reuters said that three C-130 US military planes delivered more than 38,000 meals into the Palestinian territory.

Palestinians posted videos on social media showing boxes of aid being dropped.

The United States on Friday (Dec 8) vetoed the proposed demand by the other&nbsp;United Nations Security Council countries for an immediate ceasefire in the intense fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, in a bid to shield its longtime ally.

Thirteen other members voted in favour of the draft resolution moved by the United Arab Emirates, while the United Kingdom abstained.&nbsp;

The voting came after United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a rare move, formally warned the 15-member council of a global threat from the war, which has now been going on for over two months.

"What is the message we are sending Palestinians if we cannot unite behind a call to halt the relentless bombardment of Gaza?," Deputy UAE U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab asked the council. 
 
"Indeed, what is the message we are sending civilians across the world who may find themselves in similar situations?"

"The United Arab Emirates is deeply disappointed," said the representative of the UAE. "Regrettably... this council is unable to demand a humanitarian ceasefire."

<h2>US defends veto</h2>

The United States, defending its veto, said that the resolution still held a call for an unconditional ceasefire.

"This resolution still contains a call for an unconditional ceasefire... it would leave Hamas in place able to repeat what it did on October 7," said US deputy UN representative Robert Wood.

Wood further denounced the UAE stating that the draft resolution was a rushed, imbalanced text "that was divorced from reality, that would not move the needle forward on the ground in any concrete way."

"We do not support this resolution's call for an unsustainable ceasefire that will only plant the seeds for the next war," said Wood.

UK's UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward said that her country abstained because there was no denunciation of Hamas.

"Israel needs to be able to address the threat posed by Hamas and it needs to do so in a manner that abides by international humanitarian law so that such an attack can never be carried out again," she told the council.

Israel's UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan did not address the Security Council after the vote, but in a statement said: "A ceasefire will be possible only with the return of all the hostages and the destruction of Hamas."

Washington, being the permanent member of the Security Council, can veto any resolution.

Ahead of the vote, Guterres had said that "the brutality perpetrated by Hamas can never justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people."

"This resolution still contains a call for an unconditional ceasefire... it would leave Hamas in place able to repeat what it did on October 7," said US deputy UN representative Robert Wood. Wood further denounced the UAE stating that the draft resolution was a rushed, imbalanced text "that was divorced from reality, that would not move the needle forward on the ground in any concrete way." "We do not support this resolution's call for an unsustainable ceasefire that will only plant the seeds for the next war," said Wood. UK's UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward said that her country abstained because there was no denunciation of Hamas. "Israel needs to be able to address the threat posed by Hamas and it needs to do so in a manner that abides by international humanitarian law so that such an attack can never be carried out again," she told the council. Israel's UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan did not address the Security Council after the vote, but in a statement said: "A ceasefire will be possible only with the return of all the hostages and the destruction of Hamas." Washington, being the permanent member of the Security Council, can veto any resolution. Around 45,000 campaigners participated in the rally on Saturday, as per police estimates, which took place on the second day of the four-day truce between Israel and Hamas. The recent truce marked the first pause in fighting giving some respite in the constant bombardment and fighting in the Palestinian enclave, but protesters said that was not enough.

“We need full support for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” 64-year-old protester Kate Hudson told Reuters at the rally which began from Park Lane and finished outside the Houses of Parliament.

She added, “It’s very welcome that there is a pause...But this problem needs to be resolved and resolved so that the Palestinians finally have the political settlement that countless U.N. resolutions have enshrined.”

The police were also seen distributing leaflets which sought to clarify what would be deemed a criminal offence and warned demonstrators against breaking the law after facing pressure from senior government officials to take action over alleged displays of antisemitism at the protests.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has dismissed reports about the White House spokesperson’s statement that Israel has agreed to a daily four-hour humanitarian pause in northern Gaza starting Thursday (Nov 9).

“The fighting is continuing and there will be no ceasefire without the release of our captives,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

“Israel is enabling safe corridors from the Strip’s north to its south, as 50,000 Gazans did only yesterday.”

According to the Times of Israel newspaper, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) has halted fighting for several hours each day for the past few days to allow tens of thousands of Gaza City residents to evacuate to the Strip’s south.

The response from Israel came just minutes after the US claimed that they were informed about Israel’s decision to implement four-hour military ‘pauses’ in northern Gaza each day.

According to the western media, White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters that the brief ceasefire would be implemented from&nbsp;Thursday.

US&nbsp;Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that his country and Egypt are&nbsp;working together to reinforce a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants.

Egypt has longstanding relations with both sides in the conflict and played a key role in brokering the ceasefire after 11 days of violence, in coordination with the United States.

"We've had in Egypt a real and effective partner in dealing with the violence, bringing it to a close, relatively quickly," Blinken said, following a meeting with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and intelligence head Abbas Kamel.

The two countries were now "working closely together build something positive", he said, adding that Egypt was vital to shared aspirations for Palestinians and Israelis to "live in safety and security to enjoy equal measures of freedom, opportunity and dignity".

Sisi told Blinken recent events reaffirmed the need for direct talks between the two sides with Washington's involvement, according to an Egyptian presidency statement. Sisi also discussed the issue in a video call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Blinken arrived in Egypt after stops in Jerusalem and Ramallah before flying on to Jordan, where he landed in the late afternoon. On Tuesday, he pledged that the United States would provide new aid to help rebuild the Gaza Strip, including $5.5 million in disaster relief and nearly $33 million for the UN&nbsp;Palestinian aid agency there.

He also said the United States intended to ensure that Hamas, which controls Gaza and is listed by Washington as a terrorist organisation, did not benefit from humanitarian aid.

Yehya Al-Sinwar, the Hamas chief in Gaza, said the group welcomed Arab and international efforts to rebuild the enclave.

"We will ease and facilitate the task for everyone and we will make sure that the process will be transparent and fair and we will make sure that no penny goes to Hamas or Qassam (the Hamas armed wing)," Sinwar told a news conference.

"We have satisfactory sources of money for Hamas and Qassam. A major part of it from Iran and part in donations from Arabs, Muslims and liberals of the world who are sympathetic to our people and their rights," he added.

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh has been invited to visit Cairo for talks over rebuilding Gaza, Hamas sources said.

Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza and has security contacts with Hamas, is likely to have a role in channeling aid, a senior US&nbsp;State Department official said earlier.

During the fighting, Egypt opened the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and its Sinai Peninsula in order to provide medical aid and evacuate the wounded.

It also sent a security delegation to Israel and Gaza to reinforce the ceasefire after it came into effect on Friday.

The army said its tanks and planes hit some 350 militant targets in Gaza in response.

It targeted militant sites and in some cases militants themselves as well as their homes if they were found to be storing weapons, military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said.

Several buildings in Gaza City were destroyed.

Israel said one of the buildings included Hamas military intelligence and security offices.

Turkey said its state news agency Anadolu had an office in the building, and strongly denounced the strike.

The Gaza health ministry said the dead from the Israeli strikes included a 14-month-old baby and a pregnant woman, 37. It first identified the woman as the baby's mother, but the family clarified on Sunday that she was the aunt.

Israel strongly disputed the claim, with Conricus saying that based on intelligence "we are now confident" that the deaths of the woman and baby were not due to an Israeli strike.

"Their unfortunate death was not a result of (Israeli) weaponry but a Hamas rocket that was fired and exploded not where it was supposed to," he said.
