Novak Djokovic wins against Yoshihito Nishioka, advances to French Open’s second round

Rafael Nadal showed no signs of pain as the 13-time French Open champion marched into the second round at Roland Garros with clinical 6-2 6-2 6-2 demolition of Australian Jordan Thompson on Monday.

The Spaniard, who had never arrived in Paris as unprepared as this year after a rib injury and a chronic foot problem hampered the build-up to his beloved Grand Slam tournament, was never bothered on a chilly court Philippe Chatrier.

"It`s incredible for me to play here again on Chatrier. I`m happy with this win. First round is always special," said Nadal.

The 35-year-old, who has a record 21 men`s Grand Slam titles to his name, played down the chances of adding to his tally but his display was reminiscent of those of previous years.

Nadal broke for 2-1 with a backhand volley winner and his massive forehand helped him quickly move 4-1 up against an overwhelmed opponent.

The fifth seed looked to finish off some points quickly and made several unusual unforced errors, but they were of little consequence as he breezed through the opening set.

Nadal broke serve in the first game of the second set and again in the fifth and seventh as he started to play more neatly, bagging it with a service winner.

Ukraine`s Lesia Tsurenko on Monday called for stronger support for her country from the tennis world following Russia`s invasion and said she was desperate not to play Russians or Belarusians on the tour.

The 32-year-old Tsurenko, a qualifier in Paris who lost in the first round to overwhelming favourite Iga Swiatek, thanked her opponent for wearing a Ukraine pin but said more players needed to speak out.

"I hate what Russian propaganda is saying about Ukraine in general. I really hate it. I feel a lot of anger because there is a lot of lies about my country and it hurts me a lot," Tsurenko told a news conference.

"I don`t know if I can ask players to care more, but I would like to see that from the players, from the WTA, from the ATP, I would like top players just to support more and to show more understanding of what is really going on."

The ATP and WTA Tours last week stripped Wimbledon of its ranking points after the Grand Slam event banned Russian and Belarussian players from this year`s tournament.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 calling it a "special military operation" to demilitarise and "de-nazify" its neighbour. Ukraine and the West call that a false pretext to launch a war of aggression. Belarus has been a key staging area for the invasion.

"It`s painful, I`ll be honest. It`s very painful and I`m always hoping not to get them in my draw."

She has played against Russians several times this year, including once since the invasion.

"I don`t feel good and it was also another question that I had inside of me if I should play or I should just give up, you know, should I just decide not to play against them," she said.

Russian and Belarusian tennis players are competing on the tour as neutral athletes. Tsurenko backed Wimbledon`s decision to ban players from Russia and Belarus, saying it was only a small price to pay for what was happening in Ukraine.

Barbora Krejcikova`s French Open title defence ended in the opening round on Monday as local hope Diane Parry was roared to a 1-6 6-2 6-3 victory against the second-seeded Czech. Krejcikova, who defeated Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in 2021 final to win her maiden Grand Slam title, arrived at Roland Garros without any competitive matches under her belt since February due to an elbow injury.

But she breezed through the opening set against the 97th-ranked Parry, who was facing a top-10 opponent for the first time in her career, in 34 minutes before her rustiness showed. The 19-year-old Parry turned the match on its head by winning the second set as errors and double faults began to creep into Krejcikova`s game.

Krejcikova took a lengthy break after losing the second set and was booed by the partisan French crowd at the Court Philippe Chatrier on her return. The 26-year-old Czech got an early break in the deciding set but Parry, urged on by the crowd, levelled things at 2-2 and then got the decisive break in the eighth game.

Krejcikova found the net on match point for her 45th unforced error as Parry completed a remarkable victory with the crowd chanting `Parry, Parry` throughout the contest.

"It`s a dream for me. It was always a dream to play on this court with the French crowd to support me," Parry said during an interview on court. "They clearly pushed me to victory today. I`m the happiest person right now. It`s never easy to start on this kind of court against the defending champion, you can get a bit tight, which happened in the first set but then I managed to relax."

She will play Colombian Camila Osorio for a place in the third round.

Japan`s Naomi Osaka crashed out of the French Open in a 7-5 6-4 first-round loss to American Amanda Anisimova on Monday, a year after her dramatic withdrawal from the claycourt Grand Slam tournament amid mental health issues.

Up against 27th seed Anisimova, four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka never looked comfortable on her least favourite surface as she struggled to control her powerful game. The first three games all went against serve in a tense start but Anisimova held to go 3-1 ahead.

A backhand error by Anisimova allowed Osaka to level for 3-3, but a double fault in the 11th game allowed Anisimova to move 6-5 up and she held serve to love to take the set. Anisimova broke decisively for 4-3 in the second set as Osaka again double faulted game.

After a couple of match points went begging, Anisimova finished it off with a stunning backhand winner down the line. Osaka withdrew from the tournament in 2021 after boycotting post-match media duties for mental health reasons.

In the build-up to last year`s French Open, Osaka said she would not attend the obligatory news conferences for players after matches as they impacted her mental wellbeing. The Japanese, who at that time revealed she had been suffering from depression for almost three years, returned to competitive tennis at the Tokyo Olympics after the saga cast a spotlight on players` post-match media duties.
Roland Garros organisers conceded they could "do better" on mental health this year.

French Open: Japan's Naomi Osaka knocked out in opening round by Amanda Anisimova

Teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz steamrolled past Argentine lucky loser Juan Ignacio Londero 6-4 6-2 6-0 to kick off his French Open campaign in solid, although imperfect, fashion on Sunday. The 19-year-old sixth seed, who won the Barcelona Open and the Madrid Masters in the run-up to Roland Garros, needed just one set to adjust to the immense Court Philippe Chatrier to set up a meeting with fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

The teenager, who reached the third round as a qualifier last year in Paris, has taken the tennis world by storm this season with four titles and has arrived at the French Open established as one of the title favourites. He admitted, however, that his game needed some polishing after a tricky start to the match.
"I always say that you have to improve every day if you are the best player in the world. Not in my case," he told a news conference.

"But for example, Rafa (Nadal) says every day that he always improves every day. I would say I have to improve everything a little bit. You can improve everything every day, you know. And I would say everything. I have to improve everything." With the weight of expectation weighing on his shoulders, Alcaraz showed some signs of frustration as things got tense in the 10th game of the opening set, but the Spaniard bagged it on his first opportunity when Londero netted a routine backhand.

A wide forehand by Londero gave Alcaraz a break for 4-2 in the second set. His devastating forehand continued its demolition job on a sorry Londero, who misfired again on set point to give Alcaraz a definitive edge.

The third set was a one-sided affair that lasted only half an hour as the sun set on the French capital. "This tournament is very special, I`ve been watching it since I was a kid," Alcaraz, who is in the same half of the draw as 13-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal and defending champion Novak Djokovic, told a courtside interviewer.

"It took me a little while to find my range and to get used to the size of the court."

Former champion Garbine Muguruza suffered a second consecutive first-round exit at the French Open, biting the red dirt in a 2-6 6-3 6-4 loss to Estonian Kaia Kanepi on Sunday as she conatinued on her downward trend.

Muguruza, who lifted the Suzanne Lenglen Cup in 2016 and reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros two years later, was in cruise control in a one-sided first set before Kanepi ground her way back into the match.

The decider was close but the 36-year-old Kanepi, who has reached the last eight in all the Grand Slam tournaments, took her chances and prevailed when Muguruza made an unforced error.

Muguruza finished last year on a high, winning the WTA finals, but the world number has had a dreadful 2022, managing consecutive wins only once.

The 28-year-old Spaniard was at a loss to explain her decline.

"It is very hard, in the end. You have nothing guaranteed. The fact that you finished the year, the previous year well doesn`t guarantee that you`re going to start the year playing at the same level," Muguruza told a news conference.

"You`ve got to work and you`ve got to fight for it. We all know that every year is different and so far just working through it.

"It`s been a tough season though. I mean, I`ve had matches so much in control, but then I don`t manage to close and it gets complicated and then a match is a match and at the end there`s only a winner. But I feel that I`m training hard, I`m putting the work.

Muguruza is, however, confident she can turn things around.
"I`m playing tournaments, trying to switch those moments, try to get more confident," she said.
"So we`re going to keep doing it. I mean at some point I`m a hundred percent sure that I`m going to go out there and get those wins that have been slipping away from me."

Garbine Muguruza's freefall continues with French Open first-round loss

Twice French Open finalist Dominic Thiem crashed out of the tournament in the first round on Sunday, losing in straight sets to Bolivian world number 87 Hugo Dellien.

Austrian Thiem, who has failed to win a match at any of the tournaments he has played since his wrist injury comeback in March, made 42 unforced errors as his once dominant claycourt game deserted him.

"It was not a good match at all but it is what it is," Thiem, ranked third in the world in 2021 compared to his current 194th, told reporters.

"I knew it would take time and the level is extremely high. It is going to take a few more months until I say now I am ready to beat those guys again."

The 28-year-old struggled with his forehand throughout the match and said it was now time to compete in lower-tier tournaments to get match wins under his belt.

"The problem is in practice it is really decent but a match situation is something different, Grand Slam especially. I am definitely thinking to go back to Challenger level for one or two tournaments," he said.

"I am more tight, more nervous and the whole body gets more tight. This is toxic to my forehand because I am still missing the fine feeling there," he said.

Dellien, comfortable on the surface after battling through the qualifiers to reach the main draw in all five claycourt tournaments preceding Paris, did not have to wait long for his chance.

He earned his first break point in Thiem`s opening service game and broke him on his second to race through the first set.

Two quick breaks in the second wrapped it up for Dellien, with Thiem, who injured his wrist in Mallorca in 2021 and required surgery, struggling throughout.

It is going to take a few more months until I say now I am ready to beat those guys again." The 28-year-old struggled with his forehand throughout the match and said it was now time to compete in lower-tier tournaments to get match wins under his belt. "The problem is in practice it is really decent but a match situation is something different, Grand Slam especially. I am definitely thinking to go back to Challenger level for one or two tournaments," he said. He capitulated 6-3 6-2 6-4 in just over two hours.

Twice runner-up Dominic Thiem crashes out at first hurdle in French Open

Rafael Nadal has played down his chances of winning a record-extending 14th French Open title but said he would not be in Paris if he thought it was not possible. The 35-year-old says he has never felt less prepared for his favourite tournament after being hampered by a rib injury and a chronic foot problem since winning the Australian Open.

Nadal withdrew from the Barcelona Open last month and lost in the third round of the Rome Masters against Denis Shapovalov. Asked about his fitness at a news conference on Friday the record 21-time Grand Slam champion said: "It is something that I live every day with, so is nothing new for me and is not a big surprise. I am here just to play tennis and to try to make the best result possible here in Roland Garros.

"And if I didn`t believe that this thing can happen, probably I would not be here." His best result during the European claycourt season was a quarter-final run in Madrid where he lost to Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz in three sets.

Nadal, however, has made it to Paris and he practiced with fellow Mallorcan Jaume Munar on Wednesday evening. "I considered myself during all my tennis career one of the candidates here, because I achieve tournaments before here. Now on Friday, before the tournament starts, I don`t think I am the favourite at all. But you never know what can happen," he said.

Nadal can only hope that his foot injury will relent for a couple of weeks, especially as his path puts him on a quarter-final collision course with world number one Novak Djokovic. "I think my level of tennis on clay has been high during a long period of time in my tennis career, without a doubt. That`s what the numbers say," the fifth seed said.

"Unfortunately here I didn`t have the preparation that I would like, and unfortunately that rib fracture stopped a little bit the great momentum I was having since the season start. "But in sport, things can change quick, and the only thing that I can do is try to be ready if that change happens.

"Today looks difficult and looks that there are players that are in better shape than me, without a doubt. But you never know what can happen in the next couple of days." Nadal will start his campaign against Australian Jordan Thompson.

World No. 5 Rafael Nadal plays down chances of 14th French Open crown

Defending champion Novak Djokovic and 13-times winner Rafael Nadal are on a quarter-final collision course at the French Open following the draw on Thursday. World number one Djokovic, back on the Grand Slam scene after being deported from Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open following his decision not to have a COVID-19 vaccination, will start his campaign against Japan`s Yoshihito Nishioka.

He was drawn in the toughest half of the draw with Nadal as well as in-form Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz and world number three Alexander Zverev, who could clash in the last eight. The French Open will operate at full capacity for the first time in three years after the last two tournaments were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. "It`s amazing to see all the fans who have already come here for the qualifications," said Djokovic, who attended the draw ceremony at Roland Garros.

In the lower part of the draw, last year`s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas faces a tricky first-round match against Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who last year took Djokovic to five sets in the fourth round. World number two Daniil Medvedev could take on compatriot Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals as Russian players have been allowed to compete despite their country`s invasion of Ukraine.

Wimbledon organisers have decided to ban Russian and Belarusian players from taking part in the grasscourt Grand Slam this year. In the women`s draw, hot favourite Iga Swiatek, looking to secure her second French Open title in three years, could face former champion Jelena Ostapenko in the last 16.
Ostapenko was the last player to beat the Polish world number one before she started her 28-match unbeaten streak, winning five titles before the start of the French Open on Sunday.

Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova is on a last-16 collision course with former world number one Victoria Azarenka in the lower part of the draw. Naomi Osaka, who withdrew from the tournament last year after skipping her media duties and citing mental health issues, has been drawn to face American Amanda Anisimova, the 27th seed.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal could lock horns in French Open quarter-finals

Rafa Nadal said that everyday training was a challenge and he would take a doctor with him to Roland Garros after the 21-times major winner was once again hampered by a chronic foot injury in his defeat by Denis Shapovalov at the Italian Open on Thursday.

Nadal, who only recently returned from a stress fracture in the ribs, struggled badly at the back end of his match against the Canadian as he went down 1-6 7-5 6-2 in the last-16. "I had my foot again with a lot of pain. I am a player living with an injury - it is nothing new. It`s something that is there," Nadal, a 10-times champion in Rome, told reporters.

"Unfortunately, my day-by-day is difficult, honestly. Even like this, I am trying hard... it can be frustrating that a lot of days I can`t practice the proper way." The 35-year-old missed the bulk of last season due to the foot problem before mounting a remarkable comeback to win the Australian Open in January and also prevailing in Acapulco.

"Since I came back, the foot has been tough," added the Spaniard. "Negative thing and toughest thing for me today is honestly I started to feel myself play much better. I started the match playing much better."
Nadal`s preparation heading into the French Open, where he will be bidding for a record-extending 14th title, has been far from ideal after he was also knocked out of last week`s Madrid Open by Carlos Alcaraz at the quarter-finals stage.

"First thing that I need to do is to don`t have pain to practice... it`s true that during the French Open, Roland Garros, I going to have my doctor there with me. That sometimes helps because you can do things," said Nadal. "In the positive days and in the negative days, you need to stay and to value all the things that happened to me in a positive way."

Rafael Nadal reveals foot injury a cause of concern ahead of French Open

Rafa Nadal was knocked out of the Italian Open after the 21-times major winner was beaten 1-6 7-5 6-2 by Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the last-16 of the Italian Open on Thursday. Nadal had a solid start, but the 35-year-old struggled physically towards the end of the contest, raising doubts over his fitness ahead of the French Open, which he has won a record 13 times.

The Spaniard, who has endured a string of injuries during a career spanning more than two decades, dominated the opening set with his brilliant return of serves. Canadian Shapovalov responded in style by racing to a 4-1 lead in the second set with his energetic and attacking play, but Nadal got back into the contest by winning the next three games.

Nadal saved a set point at 4-5 but a series of unforced errors and lack of aggression from him saw the match go into the deciding third set. World number four Nadal broke through right away at the start of the decider but later limped with an apparent foot injury, likely related to his chronic left-foot problem.
Shapovalov went won 17 of the last 20 points, completing his comeback as he handed Nadal his earliest Rome exit since 2008.

"I am not injured. I am a player living with an injury. That`s it," Nadal told reporters. "I started the match playing much better. My practice was much better, the warm-up, than the other day. "Then when these kind of stuff happens, the rest of the things, the rest of the positive things disappears."

Shapovalov said he hoped Nadal would recover in time for the French Open, which starts on 22nd May.
"Definitely tough to see him in pain there at the end. I never want to see that, especially with a great legend like Rafa," he added. "He`s been winning so much, I think it`s almost been difficult for him to stop playing and kind of take it easy."

Earlier, Novak Djokovic ended Stan Wawrinka`s hopes of stringing together a hat-trick of match wins for the first time in 18 months with a 6-2 6-2 thumping. The 37-year-old Swiss, who had not played for 12 months after undergoing two surgeries for a foot injury, battled past Reilly Opelka and Laslo Djere to set up a 26th meeting with top seed Djokovic in the Italian capital, and first since 2019.

The 361st ranked Wawrinka, who last won three successive matches at the 2020 Paris Masters, could not cope with Djokovic`s baseline intensity in the first set and was broken twice. Wawrinka showed incredible defence to break Djokovic in the sixth game of the second set but a double break from the world number one carried him to victory.

It was Djokovic`s 20th win over Wawrinka, and 998th career victory, as he bids to become the fifth player to reach the 1000-win mark. "It is great to see Stan back," the Serbian said. "He won two matches here, he is still physically not there, but he is still Stan and can hurt you.
"From the beginning I really moved him around the court and held my serve well. I know what is expected from me next."

Djokovic will face Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime in the quarter-finals after the 21-year-old beat American Marcos Giron 6-3 6-2. Alexander Zverev chalked up a century of match wins at Masters 1000 events with a 6-3 7-6(5) win over Australian Alex de Minaur, while world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas battled back from a set down to beat 4-6 6-0 6-3 Russian Karen Khachanov.

Local hope Jannik Sinner reached his first quarter-final in Rome with a 6-2 7-6(6) victory over Filip Krajinovic, while fifth seed Casper Ruud won 6-3 6-4 against Jenson Brooksby.

Newly-crowned Madrid Open champion Carlos Alcaraz said on Sunday he has decided to skip the Rome Masters in a bid to recover from an ankle injury ahead of the French Open later this month. Hence, the World No. 3 player still has time to recover but will be desperate to regain full fitness in order to try and further extend his Grand Slam tally. French Open organisers said on Wednesday that Novak Djokovic is allowed to defend his title as the tournament prepares to stage what is expected to be the first Grand Slam without any COVID-19 related restrictions since the pandemic broke two years ago.

France has lifted restrictions in almost all public spaces - except hospitals, nursing homes and public transports - on Monday, meaning the Roland Garros stadium should be operating at full capacity with Djokovic taking it to the red dirt courts.

"As things stand, nothing stands in the way of Djokovic taking part in the French Open," tournament director Amelie Mauresmo told a news conference on Wednesday.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner was unable to defend his Australian Open title in January after being deported from the country in a furore after being initially admitted to the tournament despite not being vaccinated against coronavirus.

The 34-year-old is also out of this month's ATP 1000 tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami, unable to enter the United States without a proof of vaccination.

While that is not required to enter France or any sporting event in the country, French tennis federation (FFT) president Gilles Moretton warned that things could change before the tournament starts on May 22.

"There's still a virus circulating and we have to be cautious. If things were to happen again and the government would take new measures we would not be excluded from these measures," he explained.

Moretton was optimistic that the Roland Garros stadium would be full after the 2020 and 2021 editions were hit by COVID-19.

"We started selling tickets on March 8 and 500,000 of the 600,000 have already been sold," Moretton told a news conference on Wednesday.

"Out of the 150,000 tickets for the night sessions, 100,000 have been sold."

Novak Djokovic expected to defend French Open title, says tournament director Amelie Mauresmo

On Sunday (January 30), tennis fans across the globe were blessed to see one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the game, or in sports overall, when Rafael Nadal came from two sets down to emerge on top of Russia's Daniil Medvedev to clinch the 2022 Australian Open final at Melbourne Park, Australia.

It was after over 14 years that Nadal came from behind, being two sets down, in a Grand Slam final to beat his competitor and walk away with the coveted title. By virtue of Nadal's 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win over the Russian player, the Spaniard won his second Aus Open title and achieved most Grand Slam titles in men's singles; i.e. 21.

Nadal also became the second man after World No. 1 Novak Djokovic -- who missed out on playing the first Grand Slam of the year due to the Covid-19 vaccination issue -- to have won each Grand Slam twice (minimum). After Nadal's historic triumph, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo interacted the veteran Indian tennis coach Nandan Bal on the glorious comeback, rivalry between the Big Three -- Roger Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, touched upon the G.O.A.T debate and more.

Not just a 'clay court specialist'

Nandan pointed out how Nadal has moved up the ladder and is not just a clay court specialist. ''If you look at the beginning of his career, you had a guy who used to play 8-10 feet behind the baseline. Today, he is coming in so much. He has worked on his volleys, single-hand slice, etc. He's an all-court specialist. Maybe not so great on grass, but certainly good enough to be on hard (court). He is not being defensive anymore. The last three sets was absolutely unbelievable,'' he opined.

G.O.A.T?

Is Nadal the Greatest of all-time? In this regard, Nandal Bal said, 'During Rod Laver's (an all-time tennis great) time, three of the majors were on grass (Aus and US Open as well along with Wimbledon). That being said, somebody put it beautifully by saying that Nadal is the best on clay, Djokovic probably best on hard and Federer is the best on grass among the trio. But, the grace that Federer brings to the tennis court, both Nadal and Djokovic don't. Even if that is the consideration (for G.O.A.T spot), when you see such a fightback on the tennis court, you have to say that 'Nadal is a G.O.A.T'.''

Will Djoko get vaccinated?

''With this kind of tennis played by Nadal, Djokovic will have to take the vaccine to remain in contention. It will be difficult to beat Nadal in Paris (French Open) with him being in such form.''

Meanwhile, the 62-year-old coach heaped praise on Federer after once again being asked to choose among the Big Three. ''Just applaud everyone's achievements. Most players still think of Federer as the G.O.A.T. It is worldwide. If it is the grace of whatever else, he just brings something else to the court. Novak Djokovic cannot play French Open without COVID-19 vaccine, says French Sports Ministry

As Novak Djokovic flew home from Australia after being deported for not being vaccinated against COVID-19, doubts arose over whether the tennis star would be able to play in the French Open.

The current men's number 1 player could be barred from the French tournament this year, under a new law intended to exclude the unvaccinated from stadiums and other public places.

French lawmaker Christophe Castaner said on Monday the new law will apply anyone who wants to play in the French Open - a reversal of earlier plans to create a "bubble" around the tournament.

"The rules apply to everyone," Castaner said.

"He has no vocation to play if he's not vaccinated, if he's not going to respect a rule that applies to spectators, the ball-boys or the professionals with shops at Roland Garros."

Much could change between now and the start of the Grand Slam tournament in late May, but that raised the spectre that the saga in Australia would be not just a blip but an ongoing challenge for the tennis star, who is increasingly being held up as a hero by the anti-vaccine movement.

Some details of the law are still being hashed out - including how it will deal with people who have recently recovered from COVID-19, as Djokovic has.

The question is how recent the infection has to be to qualify for an exemption to vaccination rules.

France's sports ministry said once the law is in place, there will be no exceptions until further notice.

French lawmaker Christophe Castaner said on Monday the new law will apply anyone who wants to play in the French Open - a reversal of earlier plans to create a "bubble" around the tournament. "The rules apply to everyone," Castaner said. "He has no vocation to play if he's not vaccinated, if he's not going to respect a rule that applies to spectators, the ball-boys or the professionals with shops at Roland Garros." Much could change between now and the start of the Grand Slam tournament in late May, but that raised the spectre that the saga in Australia would be not just a blip but an ongoing challenge for the tennis star, who is increasingly being held up as a hero by the anti-vaccine movement. Also Read: Novak Djokovic deported: How entire Australian Open visa saga unfolded Some details of the law are still being hashed out - including how it will deal with people who have recently recovered from COVID-19, as Djokovic has. The question is how recent the infection has to be to qualify for an exemption to vaccination rules. France's sports ministry said once the law is in place, there will be no exceptions until further notice.

Doubt over Novak Djokovic's participation in French Open after Australian Open debacle

All athletes who wish to compete in France will have to be vaccinated against Covid-19, government sources told AFP on Monday.

This appears to contradict what Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu said last week, that certain events like the French Open had a special exemption, when asked whether Novak Djokovic could play in the tournament.

For ordinary citizens entering France, it is not obligatory to be vaccinated but will be for those wishing to enter an establishment which has a public attendance (ERP).

Major events like the French Open previously permitted non-vaccinated athletes to compete as they operated a health bubble round the tournament.

The first major event to be directly affected would be the upcoming Six Nations rugby championship when France will host Italy (Feb 6), Ireland (Feb 12) and England (March 19).

This measure would dash 34-year-old Djokovic's hopes of defending the title and potentially an unprecedented 21st Grand Slam singles crown.

Rafael Nadal could move one ahead of him and Roger Federer if he wins the Australian Open.

Covid vaccination required for athletes competing in France, says government source

The action in the world of tennis is set to begin with the first Grand Slam of the year, i.e. the Australian Open, to commence on January 17 (Monday). Ahead of the marquee tournament, there has been a lot of noise outside the court courtesy world number one Novak Djokovic's Aus Open saga.

Before the action starts on the court, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo interacted with Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas on his journey so far, recovering from a painful elbow surgery, Djokovic's global controversy, learnings from French Open 2021 final loss and on the Big Four.

On recovery from elbow surgery

Tsitsipas underwent a right elbow surgery after struggling with the injury for long. As a result, he pulled out of his opening match in Paris Masters and went down to Andrey Rublev in his first group clash to bow out of ATP Finals, during mid-November 2021. He labelled his recovery as a difficult phase 'physically and mentally'.

"I was four weeks away from tennis, didn't touch the racket. I think I can play now with no pain. The recovery has been very good. Even my doctor said that my recovery has been faster than it should've, which is great news for me. When things like this happens, it is very difficult physically and mentally. But I'm very grateful to have found the right people, right doctor....It is a big mental relief knowing that I won't have to struggle that much now again," he revealed.

On Djokovic's global controversy

"There's been a lot of talk about it since the past four-five weeks. People are constantly talking about it and it is the No. 1 topic these days, with no talks about tennis (smiles). When you are one of the best tennis players in the world, there's going to be a lot of interest and demand around you. How I see it is that everyone has the freedom to choose and decide for themselves. If one sees it as not respecting the human race, it is upto anyone really. End of the day, your body is a very important machine. You have to protect it. You will feel not as safe as others (of getting vaccinated), then you should proceed accordingly," Tsitsipas opined.

On Wednesday (January 11), the Serbian superstar Djokovic had admitted to breaching Covid rules, by going ahead with an interview with a Serbian journalist despite a Covid positive test. In addition, he shifted the blame on his agent for filing his travel form incorrectly after entering Australia for the first-ever Grand Slam of 2022.

Given the tennis stars are role models for the younger generations, does Tsitsipas feel Djokovic set a wrong example by breaching Covid rules?

The 23-year-old Tsitsipas made an honest assessment and said, "For sure, he's been playing by his own rules. He's been doing something which not many tennis players have the guts to do especially after ATP announced certain criteria for players to enter the country. Not many would've thought to come to Australia unvaccinated or not following the protocols. It takes a lot of daring to it and putting a Grand Slam at risk. I chose to go and be 100 percent ready for whatever was to come and not having thinking about anything else. Doesn't mean my way is the right one and his way is the wrong one. Each one has a different perception."

Tennis community's take on Djokovic's Aus Open saga

Given that many have varied opinions when it comes to Djokovic's Aus Open saga, Tsitsipas shared what the tennis community feels and revealed, "Two ways to look about it. Every single player, almost, the stats say that 98% of the players are fully vaccinated and have followed the rules. One side of it is that we have been very disciplined. On the other hand, a very small majority have followed a different path and aren't playing by the rules; making the majority look like fools (chuckles)."

On French Open loss to Djokovic

Tsitsipas, the world No. 4 in ATP Men's rankings, also reflected back on his French Open final loss to Djokovic last year. During the epic finale, the Greek player was leading the Serbian by two sets before the latter shocked the entire tennis fraternity with his aggressive style of play to win 6–7, 2–6, 6–3, 6–2, 6–4.

On his disheartening loss, he told, "It taught me a lot. It taught me to not defend too much. Staying back...not attacking enough.... overthinking...that can cost you (the game). That has been the case after being two sets up. I kind of felt I backed down a little bit. But I also feel he raised his game a lot during the final. After the break, he refreshed himself and I saw a different Novak on court."

Are the likes of Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, etc. ready to take over from the Big Four?

Even someone with basic knowledge of tennis is aware of Big Four's dominance -- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray -- since early 2000s. Nonetheless, the present younger batch comprises some promising talents in the form of Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev -- both of whom have won a Grand Slam -- Tsitsipas and more.

Thus, Tsitsipas reacted on the transition phase and said the next lot is ready to take over.

"It is around the corner. With the big four not playing a lot when it comes to participation in Grand Slam, we all are competing well and have been very close. Daniil has been redeemed for his efforts with his first title (US Open in 2021). I see all of us competing for these titles a lot in the coming years. We are surrounded by a lot of young and talented players who have the ability to lift Grand Slam trophies and win in big stages," he signed off.

EXCLUSIVE | He's been playing by his own rules: Tsitsipas opines on Novak Djokovic's Aus Open saga

India's double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu failed to reach the women's singles summit clash after going down fighting to Japan's Sayaka Takahashi in three games at the French Open badminton tournament here on Saturday.

The 26-year-old from Hyderabad squandered a one-game advantage to lose 21-18 16-21 12-21 against the world number 15 Takahashi, a bronze medallist at the 2013 and 2014 Asian Championships.

It was her fourth defeat to the 29-year-old Japanese in eight meetings.

Sindhu, the reigning world champion, had lost in the quarterfinals at the Denmark Open last week in Odense.

The world number 7 Indian started the match on a positive note as there was little to separate the two. The duo played short rallies, trying to outwit each other with their attacking shots.

After going neck-and-neck from 5-5 to 9-9 in the opening game, Takahashi unleashed a powerful smash which hit Sindhu's cheeks, to lead 10-9, but the Indian recovered to level the scores with a cross court smash.

The Japanese had a slender one-point advantage at the break.

After the interval, Sindhu quickly erased a two-point deficit with a diagonal return before grabbing a one-point lead after winning a 27-shot rally.

Takahashi exploited Sindhu's weak backhand to regain the lead. She added another point with a lucky net chord but the Indian unleashed three back-to-back smashes to make it 17-16.

A misjudgement at the forecourt and two net errors by Takahashi gave Sindhu four game points. The Indian wasted two of them before slamming down a winner to pocket the first game.

After the change of ends, Sindhu continued her momentum, leading 5-2 early on. However, Takahashi again clawed her way back at 6-6, with Sindhu going wide.

The Indian showed great defence as she sent one ballooning over Takahashi at the backline and then unleashed a stiff smash to lead 9-6, and had her nose ahead at the interval.

However, the left-handed Japanese was back in the lead at 13-12 after the break, with Sindhu committing a series of errors.

At 13-15, Sindhu slammed another smash but she was let down by her backhand again as suddenly, Takahashi jumped to a 18-14 lead.

Sindhu attacked her rival's forehand but she produced a beautiful block return to grab four game points and sealed it when the Indian went wide.

The decider started with the same intensity as the duo led 6-6, but Takahashi started to dominate the proceedings and soon eked out a 11-6 advantage at the break, with Sindhu going to the net and the Japanese producing a down-the-line smash.

Despite a pep talk by coach Park Tae-Sang at the interval, things didn't improve for Sindhu as Takahashi rode on her attack to gather points easily, leading 14-9.

The Japanese set up the points well and closed them out with attacking returns on both flanks. With Sindhu unable to rein in her errors, Takahashi grabbed a massive nine-point match point.

The Indian saved one before the Japanese sent one down the line to shut the doors on her fancied rival.

This is Sindhu's second tournament since returning to action following a break after her campaign at the Tokyo Olympics, where she secured a bronze medal, five years after winning a silver at the Rio Games.

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi: Top five moments together

Naomi Osaka briefly left a press conference in Cincinnati on Monday after she appeared to get upset with a line of questioning about her relationship with the media, leading her agent to describe a reporter as a "bully".

Osaka withdrew from the French Open earlier this year after being punished for refusing to do media conferences, saying her mental health was adversely impacted by certain lines of questioning.

On Monday, a reporter from a Cincinnati newspaper asked the 23-year-old: “You`re not crazy about dealing with us, especially in this format. Yet you have a lot of outside interests that are served by having a media platform. How do you balance the two?”

Osaka twice asked the reporter to clarify his question and turned down an offer from the moderator to ”move on to the next question” before giving a full reply.

"Ever since I was younger, I have had a lot of media interest on me, and I think it`s because of my background as well," said Osaka, who is of Japanese-Haitian heritage but grew up mainly in the United States.

"I can`t really help that there are some things that I tweet or some things that I say that kind of create a lot of news articles or things like that ... but I would also say I`m not really sure how to balance the two. Like I`m figuring it out at the same time as you are, I would say."

When another reporter began to ask about her preparations for the summer hard-court season and her pledge to donate her prize money from this week’s Western & Southern Open to Haitian earthquake relief efforts, Osaka appeared to wipe away tears.

The moderator called for a pause to the proceedings and Osaka left the room for a few minutes but returned to complete the news conference.

Osaka’s French Open withdrawal not only led to her revealing that she has struggled to cope with depression for a number of years but it also prompted her to pull out from Roland Garros and Wimbledon for the sake of her mental well-being.

After losing early at the Tokyo Games, where she was given the honour of lighting the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony, she said she struggled to cope with the huge pressure and expectation placed on her.

Osaka`s agent, Stuart Duguid, condemned the reporter`s line of questioning on Monday in a statement provided to Reuters.

"The bully at the Cincinnati Enquirer is the epitome of why player/media relations are so fraught right now," said Duguid.

"Everyone on that Zoom will agree that his tone was all wrong and his sole purpose was to intimidate. Really appalling behaviour.

"And this insinuation that Naomi owes her off-court success to the media is a myth – don`t be so self-indulgent."

The reporter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Osaka has used her platform to call attention to mental health issues and she said at the news conference she felt supported by her fellow athletes.

"The biggest eye opener was going to the Olympics and having other athletes come up to me and say they were really glad that I did what I did," she added.

"I`m proud of what I did and I think that it was something that needed to be done."

Tennis: Tearful Naomi Osaka briefly leaves press conference

Every individual who has watched tennis knows who Roger Federer is. Such is his mastery of the game that his name has become inseparable from excellent tennis.

He dominated everything during his peak time. He played with such style and artfulness that it seemed like poetry in motion. Roger Federer had an easy smooth and agile game which assisted him with keeping an especially significant degree of consistency.

The allure with Roger Federer is the manner in which his game is in a general sense planned. The immense collection of strokes are oversimplified and exquisite. The swing with his serve, forehand, or strike, while they look misrepresented are in reality exceptionally simple, with the smooth finish giving the class.

The manner in which he plays the sport of tennis is a significant piece of this conversation. He plays the game with a specific beauty that nobody can bring to the game.

The manner in which he moves around the court looks practically easy, similar to a ballet performer. His game is so smooth, so satisfying to watch that you feel like you are watching workmanship, as though he is a craftsman painting the material of the tennis court with his liquid groundstrokes.
