United States President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron vowed Thursday to coordinate on the "challenge" of China and called for stability on the Taiwan Strait. "The United States and France will continue to coordinate on our concerns regarding China's challenge to the rules-based international order, including respect for human rights, and to work together with China on important global issues like climate change," said a joint statement issued by the White House.

The two leaders also pledged to support Ukraine in its war against Russia and to hold Moscow responsible for war crimes.

In a joint statement issued after their Oval Office talks, the two leaders said they were committed to holding Russia to account "for widely documented atrocities and war crimes, committed both by its regular armed forces and by its proxies" in Ukraine.

Biden and Macron also pledged to uphold the “unwavering” alliance between the two countries during the latter’s visit to the White House on Thursday. Macron was greeted by service members from the army, marines and the air force.

"France is our oldest ally, our unwavering partner in freedom’s cause," Biden told reporters.

Macron also emphasised on the friendship between the two countries that dates back to the US independence struggle and said, "We need to become brothers in arms once more."

The relationship between the two countries suffered a bit in the recent past with Macron blaming Biden’s economic policies for an inevitable trade war. As the guest of honour for the first-ever red, white, and blue-themed White House state dinner, French President Emmanuel Macron will be served butter-poached Maine lobster, beef with shallot marmalade, and an American cheese trio on Thursday. Roasted pears, creme fraiche ice cream, and orange chiffon cake will be served for dessert. The White House, together with first lady Jill Biden, planned the sumptuous dinner in order to showcase the bond between America and its longest friend, France. This included everything from the meal to the entertainment to the table decorations and other finishing touches. The United States reserves a state dinner, a high diplomatic honour, for its closest friends.

“The design of this dinner was inspired by the shared colours of our flags, red white and blue, and our common values, liberty and democracy, equality and fellowship,” Biden said. “These form the bedrock upon which our enduring friendship was built.”

Defending champions France will take on Tunisia in both sides' last group-stage encounter in the FIFA World Cup 2022 edition, in Qatar, on Wednesday (November 30). Since winning their first-ever FIFA WC trophy, in 1998, France have never won all three games in the group stage round whereas Tunisia have never even won three games in their WC history so far. Thus, it is a highly uneven contest but this edition of the World Cup has already given football fans some surprising results and, hence, the French line-up will not like to be complacent and aim to march ahead with a big win over Tunisia.

France have already qualified for the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Tunisia needs to beat the defending champions to have any chance of further qualification. Even a draw will ensure France top their group and, hence, have the luxury of resting some of their key players. Asked if their star player Kylian Mbappe insisted on playing or accepts to be given a breather, Didier Deschamps -- the French manager -- said on the eve of the contest, "Physically he’s fine. Kylian doesn’t have a big ego. He’s important to us and makes a difference. But he’s always accepted what the team needs."

France have comprehensively won both their games so far, beating Australia 4-1 and going past Denmark 2-1. Tunisia, on the other hand, held on to a 0-0 stalemate versus Denmark and lost to Australia by 0-1.

France dealt a severe blow to Australia in their first match on Tuesday. With another win, France could guarantee their place in the knockout round. On the other hand, Denmark is entering the match under tremendous pressure in a bid to stay relevant in the FIFA World Cup race. With a victory against Denmark, France might guarantee early qualification to the knockout stages. However, Denmark is no Australia. Didier Deschamps's aggressive team was no match for the Australians but Denmark has been labelled “dark horses” by many pundits.

Denmark have lately been on a fine run of form that included beating France twice in the nations league. However, after Tunisia humiliated the Scandinavians in a heart-pounding, high-octane opener, perceptions about the Scandinavians have changed.

Match predictions

Although Denmark has won their last two matches with France in all competitions—both in the 2022 Nations League— Les Bleus is still being called the favourites, with the world champions having a 52.7% chance of triumphing. Before kickoff, the chances of Denmark winning are 22.8%, while the possibility of the draw is 24.5%.

On Monday, at least 45 countries and institutions will convene in France’s city of Paris for the international aid conference during which they may pledge millions of euros of aid to Moldova. The country is currently suffering from rising food and energy prices, massive blackouts as well as an influx of refugees amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The country of nearly 2.5 million people has already taken thousands of refugees, reportedly even more per head than any other country. Furthermore, the former Soviet republic largely depends on Russia’s energy supplies and is facing increasing difficulties ahead of the winter season as Moscow is cutting at least 40 per cent of its natural gas supplies to Moldova.

According to the French Foreign Ministry, the conference will be aimed at “concrete and immediate assistance” for Moldova which is currently facing an “unprecedented energy crisis” posing a risk of a “humanitarian crisis” for the citizens. “Moldova is directly impacted because it's dependent on Russian energy supplies and is a country which has a part of its territory controlled by Russian soldiers so it's especially vulnerable,” said the French diplomat during a press briefing. “France endorses the candidacy of Germany, Brazil, India and Japan as permanent members for permanent seats,” said Nathalie Broadhurst Estival, France's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN while addressing the UN General Assembly on the annual debate on UNSC reform.

France's envoy has also called for “greater representation” from African countries among the permanent members as well as remaining seats for “equitable geographical representation.” The debate was about the ‘Question of equitable representation on an increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council’. Furthermore, Broadhurst said that to preserve its executive and operational nature the UNSC permanent members could have up to 25 members.

She further explained that the objective of the UNSC must remain twofold - to consolidate the Council’s legitimacy and “to strengthen its capacity to fully assume its responsibilities in the maintenance of international peace and security.” France’s deputy permanent representative also stated that the question of veto is “eminently sensitive” and stressed that it is up to the State requesting a permanent seat to decide on the matter.

“It is in this spirit that France proposed, as early as 2013, that the five permanent members (China, France, US, UK, and Russia) of the Council voluntarily and collectively suspend the use of the veto in case of mass atrocities. This voluntary approach does not require a revision of the Charter but a political commitment by the permanent members,” said Broadhurst.

This comes after the UK’s Ambassador to the UN Barbara Woodward also extended their country’s support for the inclusion of G4 countries’ (India, Germany, Japan and Brazil) membership bid as well as permanent African representation on the Council.

UK and France signed an agreement worth $74 million to ramp up efforts to stop illegal migrants from making perilous journeys across the English Channel

UK and France sign deal on migrant crossings

UK and France signed an agreement worth $74 million to ramp up efforts to stop illegal migrants from making perilous journeys across the English Channel.

UK & France sign deal on migrant crisis; UK to pay more to France as part of the deal

Britain and France on Monday (November 14) inked a 72.2 million euros ($74.5 million) deal to boost efforts to stop illegal migrants from making dangerous journey through the English Channel. So far, 40,000 people have crossed the English Channel this year. This is up from 28,526 last year.

The increased number of migrants had put pressure on British PM Rishi Sunak and interior minister Suella Braverman.

"It is in the interests of both the UK and French governments to work together to solve this complex problem," Braverman said in a statement, after meeting French interior minister Gerald Darmanin in Paris on Monday morning.

Darmanin took to Twitter and said that France and Britain were making their co-operation against illegal immigration stronger.

But Franck Dhersin, the mayor of Teteghem in northern France, told BBC Radio that migrants would try again if they are stopped.

"They don't want to stay in Belgium, in Germany or in France. They want to go to England (to) see members of their family," he said.

British government said that the multi-level deal will result in a 40% increase in the number of UK-funded officers patrolling French beaches in the next five months.

British officers will also be embedded in French-led control rooms and on the ground with their counterparts for the first time to improve coordination and information sharing.

France has previously resisted calls from Britain to have their own immigration officers on the ground in France over concerns the move would threaten its sovereignty.
