The proposed reforms, which are currently being debated in parliament, would increase the minimum amount of contributions needed to get a full pension and raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.

The Thursday strike will be the first time in 12 years that all unions in France have come together since the retirement age was raised from 60 to 62.

"It'll be a hellish Thursday," Transport Minister Clement Beaune told broadcaster France 2 on Tuesday, urging all those who could, to work from home.

The public transportation company in Paris, RATP, issued a warning that services will be curtailed due to the closure of three metro lines and the partial operation of ten others.

Only two automated lines will be used for services, but they may become crowded, it said.

Two French journalists were put on trial on Monday in France for allegedly attempting to extort money from the king of Morocco in exchange for concealing supposedly damaging revelations about him. In order to stop the release of a book on the Moroccan royal family, Eric Laurent, 75, and Catherine Graciet, 48, allegedly demanded $2 million in 2015.

Both authors, who could be sentenced to five years in prison and fined 75,000 euros if proven guilty, have denied any wrongdoing and claim that a lawyer for the Moroccan royal family was the one who initially gave them the money.

In court on Monday, Laurent acknowledged that accepting to "let myself be caught up in this affair" was an "ethical error" and a "disaster."

Co-author Graciet said that the Moroccan envoy "seduced me with his financial offer, I took the plunge and I regret it".

Amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, Kyiv’s western allies might have finally answered the country’s long standing call to supply modern battle tanks. On late Saturday (January 14), the United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office said that Britain would be sending 14 Challenger 2 tanks along with some other artillery to support Ukraine. This comes after the UK PM and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a telephonic conversation during which Sunak confirmed that he would send tanks and additional weapons to Kyiv. Meanwhile, Germany for weeks has been considering sending tanks amid growing pressure from France and Poland.

UK to send 14 tanks and weapons to Ukraine

The announcement was made by UK PM Sunak’s office after the two leaders spoke, late Saturday, “As the people of Ukraine approach their second year living under relentless Russian bombardment, the Prime Minister is dedicated to ensuring Ukraine wins this war,” said the British prime minister’s office, in a statement.

In the upcoming weeks, the UK is planning to send a squadron of 14 Challenger 2 tanks along with 30 self-propelled AS90 guns which would be operated by five gunners. Furthermore, Britain will also train Ukrainian army personnel on how to use the tanks as well as the guns.

This comes after the British PM highlighted the country’s “ambition to intensify our support to Ukraine”, as per a readout of a phone call with Zelensky. According to Sunak’s office, he believes a “long and static war only serves Russia’s interests”. It added, “UK defence and security officials believe a window has opened up where Russia is on the backfoot due to resupply issues and plummeting morale.”

Additionally, the UK PM believes that the British Army’s main battle tank would help Ukrainian forces “push Russian troops back”. Notably, this move now makes Britain the first western country to supply Kyiv with heavy tanks which it has sought for some time now including US main battle tank M1 Abrams and German Leopard 2 tanks.

After the conversation and announcement, Zelensky took to Twitter and thanked the UK PM for his decision to send the tanks and said, “that will not only strengthen us on the battlefield but also send the right signal to other partners.” He also spoke about how UK’s support was “always strong" and was “now impenetrable”.

Earlier this week, Sunak’s office also spoke about coordinating efforts with allies Germany, France and the United States as they are among the countries who have also indicated that they would be willing to send armoured vehicles to Ukraine.

How has Russia responded to the UK's announcement?

The announcement received a swift response from the Russian Embassy in London which said that sending tanks to Ukraine would be evidence of the “increasingly obvious involvement of London in the conflict” as well as “intensify” the conflict and lead to more casualties including civilians.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, the embassy said, “As for the Challenger 2 tanks, they are unlikely to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine turn the tide on the battlefield, but they will become a legitimate large target for the Russian artillery.” Similarly, in response to the UK's decision to send Challenger tanks, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reiterated her response that “weapons supplies are legitimate targets for Russian strikes.”

What are Challenger 2 tanks?

According to the British Army, Challenger 2 is a battle tank designed to attack other tanks and has been in service since 1994. It was deployed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Iraq, reported Reuters. While they are over two decades old they will be the most modern tank at Ukraine's disposal amid the ongoing conflict.

The Challenger 2 is a 64-tonne main battle tank, built by British Aerospace Systems in the 1990s and has a maximum speed ranging from 40 km/hour to 59 km/hour which can cover a distance of 250 km to 450 km. It can also carry a four-member crew with a commander, gunner, loader and driver and is armed with a 120mm rifled tank gun, Boeing 7.62mm chain gun, a 7.62 mm General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), and L37A2 anti-air machine gun, reported Al Jazeera.

Germany under pressure

Earlier this month, Berlin agreed to supply Ukraine with Marder infantry fighting vehicles as well as the Patriot air system. However, there has been mounting pressure on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to authorise the re-export of modern battle tanks to Kyiv. However, Scholz previously said that such a move would have to be coordinated with the entire Western alliance, including the US.

Furthermore, reports suggest that the German Chancellor has been reluctant to send battle tanks as he does not want to act alone while some western leaders are being cautious about the aid and weapons they send to Ukraine as their response can be viewed as an escalation or provocation by Russia. So far, Kyiv’s allies like Poland and the Czech Republic have only been willing to send the country Soviet-era T-72 tanks.

According to estimates by the European Council on Foreign Relations, there are nearly 2,000 Leopard tanks in Europe. “The Ukrainians really want the Leopards because there are lots in stock across Europe,” said a French official familiar with the discussions to Politico.

Germany’s support is seen as crucial being one of the biggest economies in the EU and also because while 13 European countries are reportedly in possession of Leopard 2 tanks including Poland, France, and Finland they need Berlin’s authorisation to re-export the procured tanks. Since the Leopards are being produced by Munich-based defence company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann their delivery to Ukraine would require the authorisation of the country of origin which in this case is Germany.

However, on Thursday, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, said that Berlin should not block any countries from re-exporting Leopard tanks. “Germany should not stand in the way of other countries taking decisions to support Ukraine, independent of which decisions Germany takes,” said Habeck, on the sidelines of the Greens party meeting in Berlin.

Additionally, German deputy government spokeswoman, Christiane Hoffmann, addressing a press conference, said that Berlin has not received a formal request from either Poland or Finland but also said that sending the tanks without their approval would be “illegal”.

Germany is still in the midst of considering the right thing to do and how to best support Ukraine, Hoffmann added. Last week, the Berlin government spokesperson also stressed that one of the key goals for the country is to not become an active part of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

A report by Bloomberg citing two officials familiar with the German government’s thinking said that they believe that Berlin will likely decide to supply the Leopards to Ukraine. The report, citing a German official familiar with the matter, also claims that the country will make a decision before an upcoming meeting between US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his German counterpart Christine Lambrecht at the American airbase in Ramstein scheduled for later this month.

What about other European nations?

The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda had earlier indicated that while they are ready to send Leopard tanks to Kyiv it would only be possible under a larger international coalition of tank aid to Ukraine. According to the German institute Kiel’s Ukraine Support Tracker, Poland has already sent at least 200 Soviet-style tanks, while countries like UK, France and Poland have also given a total of $12 billion as military, financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Subsequently, the US agreed to send its Bradley fighting vehicles while Germany announced it would send its Marder armoured personnel carriers for the first time since the conflict began almost a year ago.

What is happening at NATO?

A report by CNN, citing western officials, says that the decision of sending more tanks by some countries but not by others was part of a broader assessment of the on-ground situation in Ukraine while NATO allies in recent weeks have been deciding the best course of action in providing specific types of assistance be it military or money.

There are also growing concerns about Western stocks of such weapons as Ukrainians have understandably been burning through ammunition at an astonishing rate, said NPR’s Frank Langfitt, reporting from Brussels, on Thursday.

So far, several reports have suggested that as the conflict is nearing the one-year mark it is entering a new phase and Ukraine could witness major attacks from Russia.

Meanwhile, Germany remains concerned about causing further provocations against Moscow, European officials have argued that they have shared enough weapons and intelligence which has significantly benefited Kyiv. Amid threats of a strike by trade unions, the French government on Tuesday proposed raising the legal retirement age in the country to 64, from the current 62 by 2030.

Amid threats of a strike by trade unions, the French government on Tuesday proposed raising the legal retirement age in the country to 64, from the current 62 by 2030. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced the proposal and said extending the pension age will prevent the system from collapsing under the weight of deficits. "Leaving these deficits to grow would be irresponsible...It would lead inevitably to a massive increase in taxes, a reduction in pensions and would pose a threat to our pensions system," said Bonne. "I'm very aware that making changes to our retirement system is causing anxiety and fears among French people." Notably, the workers in France tend to retire much earlier than their European Union (EU) counterparts. The direct repercussion is that the French exchequer has to foot a bigger pension bill than most countries in the bloc. WATCH | France: March against pension reform, Macron govt temporarily withdraws pivotal age limit × In Germany, Denmark and Italy, the legal retirement age is 67 while it remains 66 in Spain and the United Kingdom. On average, workers in France retire at 62.3 years of age, according to EU data from 2019. They also receive 54.4 per cent of their last pay slip as pension on average. Comparatively, the average EU pension amount stands at 46.2 per cent. Thus, by launching the reforms, President Emmanuel Macron is attempting to rid the country's debt-ridden pension system by pushing the people to work longer. Read more: French President Macron says pension system reform will be implemented in 2023 Since coming to power in 2017, fixing France's complicated pension has been one of the top agendas of the Macron administration. However, the retaliation by the workers and trade unions forced him to take a step back whenever his government attempted to change the status quo. After years of delay, Macron appears steadfast in making the changes in the new year. Earlier this month in a television public address, Macron emphasised that 2023 will be the year when the much-delayed overhaul of the pension system takes place. “This year will indeed be that of a pension reform that aims to guarantee the equilibrium of our system in the years and decades to come,” said Macron. The road, however, may not be easy. After Tuesday's announcement, eight main trade unions have called for a day of strikes on January 19 to protest against the pension reform, according to local reports. A joint statement released by the trade unions said the one-day strike is expected to kick off a powerful movement for pensions in the long term". (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Iran has announced the closure of a French research institute in Tehran to protest against the cartoons of the Islamic republic’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei published by French weekly Charlie Hebdo. “The ministry is ending the activities of the French Institute for Research in Iran as a first step,” the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement. Iran had earlier issued a warning to France after the controversial magazine published cartoons depicting Ayatollah Ali Khamenei which Tehran deemed insulting. Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian took to Twitter to post a message where he cautioned of a decisive response. "The insulting and indecent act of a French publication in publishing cartoons against the religious and political authority will not go without an effective and decisive response," he wrote. Despite the pressure from Iran, the magazine refused to bow down and said it was an attempt to show the reality of the ongoing protests in Iran. France, Australia, Canada impose Covid restrictions on travellers from China

The French prime minister stated on Tuesday, ahead of crucial discussions with unions, that the government is ready to be flexible on President Emmanuel Macron's proposal to increase the retirement age to 65.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said that the retirement age of 65 is "not set in stone" and suggested that "other solutions" could be able to assist the government to achieve its goal of balancing the pension system by 2030.

She said that the proposal, which she described as the centrepiece domestic policy of Macron's second term, will be submitted to the cabinet on 23 January before being discussed in parliament at the start of February.

The unions have outright rejected the plan's main goal, which is to raise the retirement age from the existing level of 62, and the complete specifics will be revealed on 10 January, she confirmed.

As Covid cases continue to mount in China, countries across the world are opting for precautionary measures to avoid a repeat of the first wave. France, Spain, South Korea and Israel are the recent entrants to the list of countries to have announced different Covid curbs. In France, passengers travelling from China will have to show a negative report of Covid test done less than 48 hours prior to boarding the flight. Meanwhile, in South Korea, Chinese passengers will have to present a negative PCR or antigen test before boarding the flight. Afterwards, on their arrival in South Korea, the passengers will have to undergo a PCR test. As for Spain, Chinese travellers can skip the tests if they are fully vaccinated. In Israel, the authorities have directed foreign airlines to not accept any Chinese passenger if they fail to provide a negative Covid test report. Previously, Malaysia, India, US and Japan had put different measures in place to screen Chinese travellers. WATCH | Global alarm over China's Covid surge, travel curbs imposed on Chinese travelers × While cases are on an unprecedented rise, the Xi Jinping regime has let go of its draconian 'zero-Covid' policy, primarily responsible for the current predicament. The countries are anxious about Chinese travellers as the country is opaque regarding its Covid numbers and the Chinese vaccines and their efficacy continue to divide the scientists. Such has been the situation that the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday urged Beijing to release real-time data on the prevailing situation in the country. “WHO again asked for regular sharing of specific and real-time data on the epidemiological situation," said the global health body before adding, "Including more genetic sequencing data, data on disease impact including hospitalisations, ICU admissions and deaths, and data on vaccinations delivered and vaccination status, especially in vulnerable people and those over 60 years old." Read more: WHO asks China to share real-time COVID-19 data amid uncertainty regarding numbers According to a Bloomberg report, the minutes of an internal meeting of the NHC held earlier this month showed that 248 million people, or nearly 18 per cent of the country's population, likely contracted Covid in the first 20 days of December. The French health system is under immense pressure as the authorities informed that the nation faces a triple epidemic—of coronavirus, flu, and bronchiolitis. The nationwide strike by doctors and emergency services has made the situation even worse. Earlier this week, on Wednesday, French Health Minister François Braun said that the respiratory infection is affecting children under two and the strike is forcing patients to go to hospitals for consultation instead of their local GP.

Health Minister François Braun had also warned that this was a week of great danger for the national health system. Braun issued an alert because the general practitioners continue their strike for higher consultation fees and improved conditions.

Meanwhile, France said on Friday (December 30) that it would require travellers arriving from China to show a negative Covid test report. Amid a rise in positive cases in China, countries like Italy and Spain have also taken similar decisions.

France will now require travellers boarding a flight from China to show a negative Covid test report fewer than 48 hours old with their boarding pass, with random tests carried out on passengers on arrival. The government also said that the positive tests will be sequenced to check for new variants.

France makes Covid test mandatory for travellers from China; as it faces ‘triple epidemic’

Eateries and fast-food chains in France are racing to modify their practices as the deadline to do away with the use of disposable cutlery draws nearer. From January 1, 2023, all the eateries will have to use reusable cutlery in what French environmental organisations are calling a 'paradigm shift' for the sector. New law means that eatables like burgers and sandwiches cannot be served in a box. They can, however, be wrapped in paper.

Other foods like chips, nuggets, pizzas, cakes, ice-creams and drinks will have to be served with reusable cutlery which will have to be washed at 60 degrees Celsius like in normal restaurants.

There are about 30,000 fast-food outlets in France. These serve roughly 6 billion meals a year. This generates 180,000 tonnes of waste. As per reports, 55 per cent of this waste is generated by people eating in.

“We’re extremely happy that this is finally coming into force,” said Alice Elfassi, head of legal affairs for the NGO Zero Waste France.

“Fast food is a sector that produces a lot of waste. Although single-use plastic had already been banned, it had been replaced by large amounts of throwaway products like cardboard, wood, bamboo, which we consider an unacceptable waste of resources,” Elfassi was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

“Most fast-food restaurants won’t switch to classic, long-wearing glass or china that lasts years, they will opt for hard plastic and we have concerns about its durability – will it withstand hundreds of washes or will it be thrown out after only a few? We’ll be vigilant on that,” she added.

The new rules say that any restaurant with more than 20 seats will have to serve food in reusable, washable plates cups and cutlery.

Law making French restaurants dump single-use cutlery to be enforced from new year

World Cup winner with France Zinedine Zidane is the front-runner to become Brazil’s next head coach, as per a report in a French newspaper, L’Equipe. Zidane, whose record as a club manager is magnificent, having won three back-to-back Champions League titles with Spanish side Real Madrid during his first stint, could well replace Tite, who left Brazil's squad following the 2022 World Cup debacle.

In Qatar this time, Brazil again failed to put their hands on the trophy as they got knocked out in the quarters by last time’s finalist Croatia in the penalty shootout.

Now, as per the report, the Brazil federation wants to hire a foreign coach and the potential names that are doing the rounds other than Zidane are Carlo Ancelloti, Jose Mourinho, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Rafael Benitez.

Not only Brazil, but France are also believed to have thought of replacing current manager Didier Deschamps - who has been at the helm since 2012, with the French legend. Although there is no confirmation of the same, if ever that happens in future, Zidane would be in reckoning straight away.

Meanwhile, Zidane is currently out of a job after leaving Real Madrid in May last year.

How Brazil fared at the FIFA World Cup 2022

Brazil started off brilliantly after beating Serbia 2-0 in their opening match. Against Switzerland in their following game, the former five-time winners won the contest 1-0 while against Cameroon in their last encounter, the injury-hit Brazilian team suffered a shocking 0-1 defeat.

Coming to the knockouts, they thrashed South Korea 4-0 and looked dominant in their quest to win the World Cup after 20 years. Although a few of the star players were ruled out of the competition by then, the return of Neymar boosted their camp’s confidence heading into the crucial quarterfinal match against Croatia.

In their last-8 match, Brazil scored the opener in the first extra-time while Croatia made a stunning comeback, equalising in the 117th minute. As the penalty shootout was to determine the winner, Brazil missed two of their shots while Croatia hit all four penalties to win the match.
