According to a report by Reuters citing French police sources, the Eiffel Tower in the capital city of Paris was evacuated and closed to the public on Saturday (August 12) as a precautionary measure following a bomb threat. However, after two hours or so visitors were allowed back inside, the news agency was told.

What happened?

Visitors were cleared from the three floors and the square under the monument shortly after 1:30 pm (local time), according to a report by AFP.

It added, that SETE, the body that runs the site, said bomb disposal experts as well as police were scouring the area, including a restaurant located on one of the floors.

“It’s a usual procedure in this kind of situation which however is rare,” a spokeswoman told the Paris-based news agency.

According to a report by Le Parisien, a French daily newspaper, a large security perimeter had been established, traffic diverted and the monument was also evacuated.

However, two hours or so later, a French police source told Reuters, “It was a false alarm, people can go back inside”.

Visitors irked by brief closure

Some of the tourists, who came in droves during the peak summer season at the iconic Paris monument, said they were irked by the two-hour closure, as per Reuters. This was after they waited in a nearly 100-metre queue at one of the entrances before the threat was called off.

The last bomb threat called in at the Eiffel Tower was in September 2020 and was an anonymous call made to the police that prompted an evacuation of the tower, which also lasted about two hours.

Notably, France’s most emblematic symbol, the Eiffel Tower drew 6.2 million visitors last year. The monument has a police station at the foot of the south pillar and every visitor has to undergo security checks before entry.

Construction work on the tower began in January 1887 and was finished on March 31, 1889.

Eiffel Tower in Paris briefly evacuated after bomb threat: Reports

In an unusual instance of officers facing a criminal case over on-duty violence, three police officers, on Thursday, were charged over the death of a 27-year-old man in the southern French city of Marseille during nationwide riots that took place in early July, prosecutors said.

Five officers were arrested over the incident on Tuesday, out of which two were released quickly.

Last month, France was jolted by fierce rioting over the killing of a 17-year-old in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, who was shot dead by a policeman for fleeing a traffic check and failing to comply with an order to stop his car.

The riots in the country witnessed a violent response from the police as hundreds of people were arrested and several police officers suffered wounds.

The 27-year-old who lost his life in the riots was identified as Bendriss, who was a married man and a father of one. His widow is now expecting a second child. As per reports, Bendriss died after feeling unwell while riding a scooter.

His postmortem showed traces on his chest, of what as per reports could be the impact of a shot from a blast ball, known in French as an LBD and commonly used by the country's police.

Prosecutors have said they consider it "probable" that the man's death was "caused by a violent impact to the thorax caused by the firing of a projectile of the blast ball type".

The three will be charged with "armed violence unintentionally causing death".

However, the prosecutor's office also said that there is a probability that the victim may have been involved in the looting of a shoe outlet in the city.

There were indications that Bendriss had been involved in theft from the store, and was being chased by police as he rode his scooter away.

As he rode on the pavement farther from the police, he was he was struck by one shot, and another, launched by police.

As per the prosecutors, he continued to ride his scooter but was later found to have suffered cardio-respiratory arrest and later died.

As a result, the officers throughout the country went on sick leave in order to stage a demonstration but a court last week denied the appeal against his detention.

Five injured in explosion at residential building in Paris

More than 130 people have been evacuated after a wildfire at Portbou, Spain’s Mediterranean coast near the French border continued to spread, on Saturday (August 5), said a report by AFP citing firefighters. This comes after the locals were evacuated overnight from several villages as a precaution after the fire spread to the south of Portbou.

About the situation in Portbou

As of Saturday, the blaze ravaged some 435 hectares of land in the area with an estimated 2,500 hectares under threat, reported AFP, while firefighters from Spain’s northeastern region of Catalonia teamed up with their French colleagues to bring the wildfire under control.

The spread of the wildfire was attributed to strong winds which also prevented water-bombing planes from taking off to help with firefighting operations in the tricky hilly terrain.

Senior firefighter Santi Lleonart said in a Catalan government statement on Friday that the blaze was difficult to extinguish due to the mountainous terrain of the region.

However, the Catalan fire service, as per AFP said that they expect the airborne operations to resume on Saturday afternoon. Portbou, near the France-Spanish border, is also home to a major railway station used by both countries’ networks.

Meanwhile, Catalan civil protection officials reported that as many as 4,000 people were without electricity. They have also suspended rail traffic between the Spanish towns of Portbou and Figueres, which is some 30 kilometres south.

The main road into Portbou and to the French border was also closed. According to AFP, some 80 Catalan firefighting units were deployed in the region to fight the wildfire while a dozen fire engines were sent from the French side of the border.

The Catalan regional government website, on Saturday, said that the blaze “remains active” and their priority was to prevent it from reaching the nearby tourist resort of Llanca to the south.

Evacuations and investigation

The Catalan fire service also said that they evacuated around 135 local people as a precautionary measure while hundreds of others were stuck in their houses or campsites overnight. Notably, Portbou welcomes thousands of tourists around this time of the year.

The Catalan forest rangers took to X, formerly known as Twitter and said that they had also launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

According to the data from the European Forest Fire Information System, Spain is experiencing a less destructive summer of wildfires than in 2022, when more than 300,000 hectares were devastated.

About the situation in Portbou As of Saturday, the blaze ravaged some 435 hectares of land in the area with an estimated 2,500 hectares under threat, reported AFP, while firefighters from Spain’s northeastern region of Catalonia teamed up with their French colleagues to bring the wildfire under control. Niger Coup is an 'eye-opening' event. The event put forth the West’s failing policy in the Sahel, The coup in Niger was the seventh in West & Central Africa in the last three years.

Why is Niger coup a testament to the West’s failing policy in the Sahel?

In what is being seen as insensitive comments, President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (August 3) that France is facing an “immense” challenge most of the youngers who were prosecuted over riots this summer were either in social care or had single-parent families.

The violence erupted in the month of June after 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk was shot dead by a traffic police officer in a car in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.

Macron, in an interview with Le Figaro’s weekly magazine, said the figure reflected a decline of trust among youth in schoolteachers, parents and also in democratic institutions. It also underlined a breakdown of authority.

The comments made by Macron were an attempt to flesh out Elysée’s view which hold the failure of parental guidance as the reason for the worst urban violence in France for 18 years.

Macron stated that the episode emphasised a “crisis of civilisation” and the “deregulation” of Western societies. He further refuted the populist right’s claims that the riots were a result of immigration, mainly from France’s former African colonies.

French riots

In the wake of the police killing, protesters set ablaze or vandalised 12,031 cars and 2,508 buildings, which included 258 police stations and 243 schools, and about 800 officers were injured.

Around 3,505 people were arrested and 1,056 were imprisoned. A third of the arrests made included rioters who were below the age of 18. The youngest one was 11 years old.

Minors form majority of rioters

“Almost 75 per cent of the minors [sent for trial] were either in social care or from single-parent families. This is an immense challenge because [the child rioters] are the society of tomorrow,” said Macron.

He stated that the government authorities should take more steps to help single parents in educating their children. “We must accompany these families, give far more means, prepare them better, and at the same time make them more responsible,” he added.

He stated that the parents of children who had committed offences need to be punished but stopped short of supporting right-wing calls for stopping the welfare benefits of such people. This move would only “make the problem worse”, he stated.

The president further pledged to counter the “unravelling of families” by restoring “democratic authority”, but also “authority in school” and “parental authority”.

“We can’t be a nation if we don’t have confidence in . . . the authorities, in one’s parents, in one’s teachers,” he stated.

France may soon overtake Russia as the world's number two arms exporter and of course France has recently just sealed the deal with India for the Rafael Marine jets as well. This come due to declining Russian arms exports in the wake of the Ukraine war.

Niger junta revokes military deals with France. What's driving the anti-French sentiment?

President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday, August 3, that France is facing a "immense" issue. Many of the youths charged in connection with the riots this summer were either in foster care or were from single-parent families, which has been criticized as being callous. After Nahel Merzouk, 17, was fatally shot by a traffic police officer while riding in a car in the Paris district of Nanterre in June, violence broke out.

Russia's place in global arms export is being taken over by France, partly aided by New Delhi's imports from Paris. Between 2018 and 2022, France's share of the global arms trade increased from 7.1 per cent to 11 per cent, according to a Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report published in March.

In the same period, the Russian share of the international arms trade declined from 22 to 16 per cent.

It must be noted that Russia still is the world's second largest arms exporter after the United States but Moscow's pace of exports has slowed due to its ongoing war in Ukraine. At the same time, France has managed to increase its pace of arms exports and closed its gap with Russia.

Primarily, Russia's arms exports are declining due to war in Ukraine. Countries such as India are now diversifying their arms suppliers. Moscow is also dedicating more of its arms resources on front line in Ukraine.

France catches up with Russia, set to replace it as world's second biggest arms exporter

An armed gang who dressed in stylish cloths allegedly robbed a luxury store in the French capital city, on Tuesday (August 1) and stole millions of dollars worth of goods in broad daylight, said police and prosecutors, according to AFP. The store in question was of the luxury jewellery and watch brand Piaget located in central Paris.

According to initial reports, the incident took place at 1:00 pm (local time) and the robbery involved at least three people, and one of them was said to be armed. The alleged criminals took off with their bounty which is reportedly estimated at between $11 million and $16.5 million.

Stylish, armed robbers storm luxury watch shop, steal over $16 million in Paris heist

Niger is under a military coup, but this takeover of the government is not new to the landlocked nation. Ever since independence from France in 1960, the military or the presidential guard has been taking power by force. Will the story be any different this time?

Will the coup in Uranium-rich Niger drive France & Europe into a deep energy crisis?

France will "very soon" start to evacuate its nationals from Niger, where a coup last week has unleashed anti-French protests, Paris's embassy in Niamey said Tuesday.

"In the face of a deteriorating security situation in Niamey, and taking advantage of the relative calm in Niamey, an operation of evacuation by air from Niamey is being prepared," said a message sent out by the embassy to French citizens, adding that the evacuations "will take place very soon in a very limited span of time".

France planning evacuation of nationals from Niger amidst protests

Niger’s military leaders who carried out the recent coup have claimed that the toppled government of Mohamed Bazoum has authorised France to carry out a military intervention at the presidential palace and free the ousted president.

"In its search for ways and means to intervene militarily in Niger, France with the complicity of some Nigeriens, held a meeting with the chief of staff of the Nigerien national guard to obtain the necessary political and military authorisation needed," said a statement by the military junta that was read out on national television, according to AFP news agency.

Niger was a French colony for more than 50 years before its independence in 1960. Diplomatic ties between the two countries were strong before the last week’s putsch.

Macron vows immediate action

Though France hasn’t declared that it will carry out any military attacks, President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday vowed "immediate" action if French citizens or interests were attacked in Niger.

On Monday, the French foreign ministry while responding to the allegations denied that it was intervening militarily in the West African nation.

It said that it was focused on securing its nationals’ safety, a day after thousands of demonstrators rallied outside the country's embassy in Niamey, setting a door to the embassy ablaze.

“It's wrong," Catherine Colonna told BFM news channel of the allegations, adding it was still "possible" and "necessary" to restore ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to power.

Anti-French and pro-Russian influence growing

The demonstration reflects anti-French sentiment that runs high in the former African colony, with Russian and Chinese influence growing.

According to local news agencies, anti-French and pro-Russian slogans were shouted at the rallies on Sunday.

Protesters, some carrying Russian flags, said France had failed to shield them against the jihadists, whereas Russia would be a stronger ally.

Crackdown on Bazoum's party

On July 26, Niger’s presidential guard detained Bazoum, who is perceived as an ally of Western powers, following which General Abdourahamane Tchiani declared himself to be the national leader.

On Monday, several ministers of Bazoum’s party were reportedly arrested.

Meanwhile, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has asked the military to junta to reinstate Bazoum within a week, failing which they would take “all measures” to restore constitutional order, which “may include the use of force”.

ECOWAS has suspended all commercial and financial transactions, while France, the EU and the US, which has about 1,000 troops in Niger, have either cut off support or threatened to do so.

Anti-French and pro-Russian influence growing The demonstration reflects anti-French sentiment that runs high in the former African colony, with Russian and Chinese influence growing. According to local news agencies, anti-French and pro-Russian slogans were shouted at the rallies on Sunday. Protesters, some carrying Russian flags, said France had failed to shield them against the jihadists, whereas Russia would be a stronger ally. France suspends development aid and budgetary support to Niger

CNIL, France's privacy watchdog said on Friday (July 28) that the legality of biometric data collection of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's Worldcoin Project "seems questionable".

Worldcoin, launched on Monday, requires users to provide iris scans for a digital ID and even free cryptocurrency in some countries. Worldcoin's website says it has signed up 2.1 million people over trial in last two years.

Worldcoin has set-up sites in various locations across the world. At these locations people can get their faces scanned by a shiny spherical "orb".

Data regulator in Britain said this week that it will obtain more information about Worldcoin following its launch.

CNIL, the French watchdog, told Reuters that "The legality of this collection seems questionable, as do the conditions for storing biometric data."

CNIL said in a e-mail that investigations had been initiated which revealed that the Bavarian state authority in Germany has jurisdiction, reported Reuters. The watchdog added that the Bavarian authority has since been conducting the investigation.

Worldcoin was "designed to protect individual privacy and has built a robust privacy programme" and is committed to ensuring it meets regulatory requirements, the Worldcoin Foundation said via email, as reported by Reuters.

The Worldcoin Foundation is a Cayman Islands-based entity which describes itself as a "steward of the Worldcoin protocol".

"The Worldcoin Foundation complies with all laws and regulations governing the processing of personal data in the markets where Worldcoin is available," it said.

The Worldcoin Foundation has said that the project is supervised in the EU by the Bavarian State office for Data Protection Supervision

"The project will continue to cooperate with governing bodies on requests for more information about its privacy and data protection practices," it added.

The first giant panda to have been born on French soil received an emotional goodbye as a departed from the country.

Yuan is the first son of the first panda loaned to France by China

Yuan Meng, who was born in 2017 in the Beauval zoo in the Loire region of France, was cheered by visitors and zoo staff as he was driven under police escort to Charles de Gaulle airport for a 12-hour Air China flight to the Chinese city of Chengdu which took off in the early evening, an AFP reporter saw.

Trained for several days to get ready comfortably for the trip, the son of Yuan Zi and Huan Huan -- the first pandas loaned to France by the Chinese authorities in 2012 -- did not show much hesitation in climbing into his special cage filled with bamboo for his trip.

"Everything went well. He said goodbye to his parents and his sisters, with tears in the eyes of his keepers," said Rodolphe Delord, head of the zoo.

"He can now continue to live his good life. It's inevitably a moment of emotion, but all our animals born here are forced to leave one day. We're used to that," he added.

The panda was given a final farewell on the tarmac by French first lady Brigitte Macron before being loaded onto the cargo plane.

Macron knelt in front of the clear panes of the cage to say goodbye to the panda, who initially appeared more interested in sleeping but then languidly raised his head to acknowledge the presence of the French first lady, television images showed.
