Argentina's World Cup-winning star Angel di Maria to call time on illustrious career after 2024 Copa America

International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Chief of Global Football Development Arséne Wenger remarked that timely identification of talents and providing them profound coaching at a young age is essential to grow Indian football. Speaking at a press conference with All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey in Mumbai, Wenger said that developing the sport in India is an exciting and interesting endeavour for the global governing body as he insisted upon finding efficient solutions in consultation with all stakeholders of the game in the nation.

Wenger signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of FIFA with AIFF to set up the inaugural FIFA-AIFF Talent Academy at the Odisha Football Academy in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

“We are convinced that you have to put the best talents against each other together. Football is learned with the difficulties you experience by playing against good players. We want to identify good talents, give them the best coaching, quality competitions, and after that, the final step is to integrate them within the first team,” Wenger said.

Kalyan Chaubey, President, AIFF, touched upon the driving force that the Indian Super League (ISL) and other stakeholders have been towards taking Indian football forward. He opined that the synergy between the AIFF and the ISL has been paramount for the development of the sport and he motivated all authorities to work in cooperation and ensure that Indian football reaches heights so that years later they can be proud of the day this initiative with FIFA was kicked off.

“The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is having a good synergy with the Indian Super League (ISL), the club owners, and all stakeholders of Indian football. We all have been working for the development of football. The AIFF is asking everyone to push together for progress in the same direction. We can take the support of all stakeholders, so that we can feel proud of this day in the future,” Chaubey remarked.

Wenger agreed on the need to work collaboratively, adding, “This is something that we need to do together. We are here to help. We do not want anything. We just want to give from everything that we have learnt from all the countries in the world. The top one percent footballing countries in the world are the ones with better systems of education. There is a huge correlation between the quality of education and the results of the first-team.”

Wenger quipped that there is a need of having 40 such development academies to fulfil the needs of a country the size of India. However, he was convinced that proper solutions could be met with the help of all concerned stakeholders.

“In the last three days, we spoke a lot about the promise from both sides. I feel that we have cooperation here. Ideally we want 40 academies so that nobody misses to detect talent in this country. Of course, we have to find the most efficient solution and hence we need the cooperation of everybody who has potential here, right from the states, the AIFF, from sponsors who want to develop football, that’s why it’s difficult, but at the same time it is very exciting and interesting for us,” Wenger explained.

FIFA is excited with the challenge of developing football in India: Arsene Wenger

Following a great start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers campaign with a win against Kuwait, Indian men's football registered a heartbreaking 3-0 defeat to Qatar in their second Group A match of the second round at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

Mustafa Meshaal (4'), Almoez Ali (47') and Yusuf Abdurisag (86') registered their names on the scoresheet for Qatar. India had a solid phase near the end of the first half but overall they were no match for the quality offered by Asian champions Qatar.

The loss has kept India at the second spot in Group A, with a win and loss each. The loss also ended Blue Tigers' 15-match unbeaten streak at home. Indian team made five changes to their playing XI. Amrinder Singh stepped in as a goalkeeper instead of Gurpreet Singh Sandhu but was put under pressure immediately as a misdirected pass from him landed at Almoez's feet, but the shot by Akram Afif missed the target.

Qatari forwards exploited the Indian defence and got in the lead at the fourth minute. Mustafa Meshaal fired a low shot into the bottom corner to give his side the advantage. However, Qatar could not convert their corners later despite winning so many chances at it and the scoreline stayed intact at 1-0.

After the first half an hour, India started to gain some grip of the match and increased the passes into their box and forwards, including skipper Sunil Chhetri managed to get some shots at scoring the equaliser. Lalengmawia Ralte and Udanta Singh looked extremely confident handling the ball and their deliveries into the box led to an error from Qatar defenders. Anirudh Thapa however could not make the most of this and shot his attempt wide of the goal. This was India's best chance to score in the match.

ALSO READ | STAGGERING! Record 1.25 million fans attended ODI World Cup, reveals ICC After the first half an hour, India started to gain some grip of the match and increased the passes into their box and forwards, including skipper Sunil Chhetri managed to get some shots at scoring the equaliser. Lalengmawia Ralte and Udanta Singh looked extremely confident handling the ball and their deliveries into the box led to an error from Qatar defenders. Anirudh Thapa however could not make the most of this and shot his attempt wide of the goal. This was India's best chance to score in the match. Saudi Arabia’s football has been on the rise in recent years with their clubs bringing in big-name players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and N’Golo Kante applying their trade in the nation. The 2023 summer transfer window saw a big overhaul in Saudi football with clubs spending big money on players as well as managers. The FIFA World Cup was first hosted in Asia in 2002 when Brazil won the tournament beating Germany in the final while the 2022 edition saw Lionel Messi’s Argentina lift the prize asset. Argentina beat France in the final as they ended their 36-year wait for the World Cup. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
Amanda Ilestedt scored her fourth goal of the tournament and Filippa Angeldal netted a penalty as Sweden hung on to beat Japan 2-1 on Friday and set up a Women's World Cup semi-final with Spain.

Centre-back Ilestedt poked in just after the half-hour mark at Eden Park in Auckland to give Sweden a deserved lead and leave Japan trailing for the first time at the World Cup.

Angeldal made it 2-0 from a penalty seven minutes into the second half before Japan attempted a comeback, with Riko Ueki missing a spot-kick and Honoka Hayashi pulling one back with three minutes left of normal time.

Sweden then survived a late storm to advance to the semi-finals for the third time in four World Cups.

The exit of the 2011 champions Japan, following the United States, Germany and Norway, means there are no former winners left and a brand-new name will appear on the trophy after next weekend's final in Sydney.

If Sweden, runners-up in 2003, are to get there they will have to win a semi-final in Auckland next Tuesday against Spain, who defeated the Netherlands 2-1 earlier Friday in Wellington.

This was billed as the ultimate clash of footballing styles, between a slick and clinical Japan and a more rugged and aggressive Sweden.

Peter Gerhardsson's Swedish team took the game to their opponents, who sat back in a 5-4-1 out of possession but were rarely given the space to spring forward on the counterattack like they had done to such devastating effect in previous rounds.

Japan had started to dream of a run to match their remarkable triumph in 2011 but instead find themselves eliminated at the hands of the same team that beat them in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics two years ago.

The opener arrived in the 32nd minute following a set-piece, exactly the scenario where the Japanese had been expected to struggle against their more physically imposing opponents.

The Nadeshiko failed to clear their lines as a free-kick dropped in their box, and the ball eventually fell to Ilestedt to stab into the roof of the net after her centre-back partner Magdalena Eriksson had an effort blocked.

Ilestedt, who has just signed for Arsenal, had already netted three times in the group phase and is, remarkably, a contender to win the golden boot with current leading scorer Hinata Miyazawa, on five goals, now out.

Frantic finale

Miyazawa had little influence on this game and Sweden could have scored again before half-time, with captain Kosovare Asllani having a shot turned onto the post by the outstretched fingertips of Ayaka Yamashita.

The Japan goalkeeper then produced another fine save two minutes after the restart to push a Johanna Kaneryd shot behind for a corner.

Yet it was that corner which led to the second goal. The delivery from the right struck the fist of Fuka Nagano in her own box, and the Liverpool player's offence was spotted by the referee after a review.

Manchester City midfielder Angeldal stepped up to convert the spot-kick, sending Yamashita the wrong way.

Japan did not give up and won a penalty in the 76th minute when substitute Ueki went down under the slightest of contact from Madelen Janogy.

It was a soft award, but Ueki could not convert, smashing her kick off the underside of the bar and out.

The woodwork rescued Sweden again in the 87th minute when Aoba Fujino's free-kick remarkably hit the bar, rebounded off the back of goalkeeper Zecira Musovic and struck the post.

Yet seconds later Japan had a goal back as Eriksson failed to deal with Kiko Seike's centre and Hayashi pounced to score, setting up a frantic finale.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Sweden beat former champions Japan to book SF berth against Spain

England scraped into the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup when they beat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties in Brisbane on Monday. Despite Nigeria having the better of the chances throughout, the European Champions -- reduced to 10 players after 87 minutes -- snuck home in front of 50,000 spectators after the match had finished 0-0 at the end of extra time.

England held on after playmaker Lauren James received a red card for a needless stamp and will know they have to improve if they want to add the World Cup to their European crown. They will face Colombia or Jamaica on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals. England got off to a terrible start in the penalty shootout when Georgia Stanway fired wide, but Desire Oparanozie couldn't take advantage and missed with an almost identical effort.

Beth England made no mistake, but Nigeria's Michelle Alozie shot way over top to give England an advantage they never surrendered, sealing the win when Chloe Kelly calmly converted. The Lionesses, who last year won the European Championship at a packed Wembley Stadium in London, were expected to win comfortably against the world's 40th ranked team.

The Nigerians, however, have shown in this World Cup that they have the game to challenge anybody. They stunned hosts Australia in the group stage, taking advantage of their speed in the transition to score a 3-2 win. And they employed the same tactics against England, whose back three were regularly exposed by the Nigerian attack.

England had started the match strongly and rattled Nigeria in the opening skirmishes as the Lionesses found plenty of space out wide. They also controlled possession, completing 173 passes in the first half to Nigeria's 83. But it was the Nigerians who looked the most dangerous and they gave the European champions a real fright on a number of occasions.

England-born Ashleigh Plumptre had two golden chances to open the scoring, the first coming in the 16th minute when a strike from outside the box crashed into the crossbar. A minute later she forced a fine diving save from Mary Earps. The Nigerians had eight shots at goal in the first half, three more than England, whose best chance fell to Alessia Russo in the 23rd minute.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first, England dominating possession but Nigeria looking the more dangerous. England had a golden chance to seal the match with 15 minutes left only for Chiamaka Nnadozie to pull off a fine save from Rachel Daly's powerful header.

The game inevitably went to extra time and again Nigeria looked most likely, Michele Alozie and Oshoala both going close, but neither team could break the deadlock.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Sweden win to set up USA showdown; South Africa stun Italy to reach last 16

Captain Wendie Renard headed in a late winner as France kickstarted their Women's World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Brazil in a heavyweight clash in Brisbane on Saturday.

After a lacklustre 0-0 with Jamaica in their opening game, France defied the Brazilian team and most of the 49,378 crowd to secure three vital points ahead of their final group match against tournament debutants Panama.

France, one of the pre-tournament favourites, controlled much of the game and took the lead in the 17th minute through veteran striker Eugenie Le Sommer with her 90th goal in 191 appearances.

Brazil hit back in the second half through Debinha, but the 33-year-old defender Renard appeared at the back post to head in an 83rd-minute winner from a corner.

French manager Herve Renard -- no relation to his captain -- said he was always confident France would bounce back from the draw against Jamaica.

"In their preparation they were focused and really concentrating on the match, so I knew they would get back on track," he said of his side.

"Sometimes it's good to get off to a shaky start at a tournament like this as it makes you more determined.

"Our objective is still to finish on top of the group so we need to keep this mindset for our next game."

Brazil disappoint

Brazil were scintillating in thrashing Panama 4-0 to open their World Cup.

Ary Borges hit a hat-trick in that big win, but she and her team never hit those heights on a perfect Brisbane evening.

Coach Pia Sundhage conceded her team had been outplayed, especially in the first half.

Captain Wendie Renard headed in a late winner as France kickstarted their Women's World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Brazil in a heavyweight clash in Brisbane on Saturday.

"Our objective is still to finish on top of the group so we need to keep this mindset for our next game." Ary Borges hit a hat-trick in that big win, but she and her team never hit those heights on a perfect Brisbane evening. Coach Pia Sundhage conceded her team had been outplayed, especially in the first half. "We'd been well prepared leading up to the game. Everything had been good, but I could not make them play the way they played in the match before," she said. "Second balls, loose balls, the French players were so much faster to get there and for me that's disappointing. "The players we have are fast, they are quick, but today the first half was not good."
Catalina Usme and Linda Caicedo scored to give Colombia a 2-0 victory over South Korea in their opening game of the Women's World Cup on Tuesday, denying the Koreans what would have been only their second win in four appearances at the tournament. Usme scored on a penalty kick in the 30th minute after a South Korean handball, sending keeper Yoon Younggeul the wrong way before slotting the ball into the far corner. Caicedo, an 18-year-old forward for Real Madrid, doubled Colombia's lead nine minutes later, launching a high shot that Yoon got her hands on, but without the power to send it over the bar. The ball squirted into the net, to the delight of the yellow-clad Colombian fans at Sydney Football Stadium.

"Well, I am extremely happy, but this has to do with the collective work of everyone," Caicedo said on her first World Cup goal. "The feeling the group had going onto the pitch we were a bit anxious, we wanted the World Cup to start, and we wanted to start off on the right foot, this was something crucial. Very happy for the goal and the victory."

Women's World Cup: England skipper Millie Bright to don armbands backing inclusion and gender equality

Co-hosts Australia laboured initially in the absence of injured captain Sam Kerr but a second-half penalty from Steph Catley got them off to a solid start at the Women's World Cup with a 1-0 win over Ireland in Group B on Thursday. The news that striker Kerr had been ruled out by a calf injury stunned the record crowd of 75,784 as it filtered into Stadium Australia but Catley stepped up to take the captain's armband and scored the decisive goal in the 52nd minute.

Ireland, cheered on by a noisy band of compatriots, made life difficult for the Australians with their compact defence and came close to forcing an equaliser during a period of sustained pressure late in the second half. "It's incredible to get the win, I think this is the longest buildup to a game in my entire life," Catley told reporters.

"Losing a player like Sam, probably the best player in the world and her as a person, obviously we were heartbroken. We had to use her spirit ... to help us push on. She's so, so important, she's our spiritual leader."

After a moment's silence for the victims of the morning's shooting in Auckland, the game opened as had been expected with Ireland getting plenty of bodies behind the ball and challenging Australia to try to break them down. The Matildas were successful in using their pace on the flanks to get behind the Irish defence but the massed ranks of green shirts managed to deal with the subsequent crosses into the box.

It was from the set piece that the hosts looked most likely to score and winger Hayley Raso had the first attempt on goal from a 28th minute corner only to flash her header wide. The second shot on goal came just before halftime but Katrina Gorry's long-range effort was easily gathered by Courtney Brosnan in the Ireland goal.

'ONE MISTAKE'

Australia came out with more intent after the break and the half was only seven minutes old when Kyra Cooney-Cross sent the ball looping into the box and Ireland forward Marissa Sheva shoved Raso to the ground. Catley gave Brosnan no chance with the penalty, striking the ball with her left foot firmly into the top corner of the Ireland net. The penalty appeared to ease the Australian nerves and Mary Fowler, who had replaced Kerr up front, almost immediately stormed forward and lashed a shot high over the bar.

Australia striker Caitlin Foord headed the ball across the face of goal in the 68th minute but that presaged Ireland's best period of the game as they launched wave after wave of attacks. Megan Connolly came close with a free kick in stoppage time which whipped just over the angle of the post and crossbar to give the Australians in the crowd a mighty fright.

The Irish continued to pour forward in search of an equaliser and Katie McCabe forced Australia goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold into a save before Louise Quinn headed the ball just past the post in the dying seconds. Australia, however, held on to make a winning start to a tournament in which they feel they can be genuine contenders after wins over England, Spain and France this year.

"It's very disappointing, we said at halftime this was a game that would be decided by one mistake, them or us," Ireland coach Vera Pauw told RTE. "Sam Kerr is one of the top strikers in the world, her not playing was of course an advantage, but they have a powerful team and it was very difficult to play against them."

Co-hosts Australia laboured initially in the absence of injured captain Sam Kerr but a second-half penalty from Steph Catley got them off to a solid start at the Women's World Cup with a 1-0 win over Ireland in Group B on Thursday.

North African nation Morocco will join forces with Spain and Portugal in a three-way bid to host the 2030 soccer World Cup, officials confirmed on Tuesday (March 14).
"I would like to announce that the Kingdom of Morocco has decided, together with Spain and Portugal, to present a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup," Morocco's King Mohammed VI said in a letter read by the country's minister of sport Chakib Benmoussa in Kigali, where soccer body FIFA hosts its 73rd Congress on Thursday (March 16).

"This joint bid, which is unprecedented in football history, will bring together Africa and Europe, the northern and southern Mediterranean, and the African, Arab and Euro-Mediterranean worlds," added Benmoussa.

They stunned the world at the tournament in Qatar last year when they became the first African side to reach the semi-finals before losing to France and eventually finishing in fourth behind Croatia. The African nation also hosted the 2022 Club World Cup, which was delayed due to the Qatar World Cup and held last month.

Morocco confirms joint bid for 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal

Swiss lawyer and administrator Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as the President of FIFA unopposed at the congress of world football's governing body on Thursday, March 16 in Kigali. Infantino, who succeeded Sepp Blatter in 2016 will serve at the helm until 2027, post the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 52-year-old was waved in for a third term by acclamation, just as he was four years ago, by delegates from the 211 member federations.

"To all those who love me, and I know there are so many, and also those who hate me, I know there are a few: I love you all," Infantino told delegates in the Rwandan capital, where the voting system did not register the number of dissident voices.

While FIFA statutes currently limit a president to a maximum of three four-year terms, Infantino has already prepared the ground to stay until 2031, declaring in December that his first three years at the helm did not count as a full term.

Infantino, who staunchly defended Qatar's hosting of last year's World Cup as the Gulf state's treatment of migrant workers, women and the LGBTQ community came under the spotlight, has overseen the expansion of the men's and women's World Cup and huge increases in FIFA revenues. Norwegian Football Federation president Lise Klaveness had said she would not support Infantino and tabled a proposal to discuss at the congress "FIFA's responsibilities to remedy human rights abuses" in relation to the Qatar World Cup and future tournaments.

However, Infantino's mainly European-based opponents were not able to put forward a candidate to stand against the man who was once Michel Platini's number two at UEFA.

48-team FIFA WC in 2026

"There is a lot to be looking forward to," Infantino said as he turned thoughts to the next four years and declared the 2026 World Cup, the first edition to be enlarged to 48 teams, will be "the most inclusive World Cup ever".

Infantino is also planning to introduce a new, expanded Club World Cup to be played every four years starting in 2025 and featuring 32 teams.

"We need more, not fewer, competitions worldwide," he told delegates at the 73rd FIFA Congress.

Infantino has also announced projected income of $11 billion in the four years up to 2026, compared to $7.5 billion in the last four-year cycle ending in 2022.

But he said that figure did not include revenues generated by the Club World Cup, suggesting the final amount of money generated will be even greater.

Those improved financial results allow FIFA to keep on increasing the amount of money it provides in subsidies to federations, in turn helping ensure many of them will continue to back Infantino.

Swiss lawyer and administrator Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as the President of FIFA unopposed at the congress of world football's governing body on Thursday, March 16 in Kigali.

48-team FIFA WC in 2026 "There is a lot to be looking forward to," Infantino said as he turned thoughts to the next four years and declared the 2026 World Cup, the first edition to be enlarged to 48 teams, will be "the most inclusive World Cup ever". Unopposed Gianni Infantino re-elected as FIFA President; set to take charge until 2027

The 2026 football world cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico is going to be a marathon affair with FIFA confirming a record 104 matches in the showpiece event. The tournament will be the first to include 48 teams.

48 teams, 104 matches: Has FIFA devalued the football World Cup?

The expanded 2026 men's World Cup in North America will start with 12 groups of four teams, a change from the original planned format of 16 groups of three, football's world governing body FIFA announced on Tuesday.

"The revised format mitigates the risk of collusion and ensures that all the teams play a minimum of three matches, while providing balanced rest time between competing teams," FIFA said of the format for the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, up from 32 sides at the recent tournament in Qatar.

It means that there will be 104 matches played, a huge increase on the 64 games at last year's tournament.

FIFA's original plan for 2026, when the World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, was for 16 groups of three teams, from which the top two would advance to a last 32.

The new decided format means the top two in each group will go through to the knockout round along with the eight best third-placed sides.

FIFA World Cup: 12 groups of 4 teams each to feature in 2026 tournament; 104 matches to take place

The dust is yet to settle on the heroic achievements of Argentina as they lifted the FIFA World Cup 2022 by beating France in the final in December. However, the countdown to the next World Cup has already begun as the likes of the USA, Canada and Mexico get ready to host the carnival of football. And one thing that has caught the eye is the expansion of the tournament to a staggering 48 teams which has attracted mixed reviews. As a result big questions have surfaced as FIFA gets ready to address the group stage issue where they are expected to revert to the four-team groups in 2026 showpiece.

What is on Agenda?

In 2022, FIFA confirmed the plans for a 48-team tournament over the usual 32 teams as they wanted to earn a larger reach to a worldwide audience. The main agenda of FIFA's meet later this month will be the format of the tournament as they try to revert to the four-team groups which have been in use for a long time. If the reports are true, there will be an expected 12 groups in the tournament and thereby leaving a big question mark on how will the format work for the knockout stage.

Why four-team groups?

Currently, a four-team group guarantees a smooth passage in the Knockouts (KO) as teams play even matches while also playing simultaneously on Matchday 3 to avoid handing over a advantage if a qualification scenario is on agenda. In case of three or more odd team groups, the qualification to the KO stage will hand over an advantage to one team in their final group match thereby affecting the integrity of the tournament.

A more structured multiple teams group like six could also work, but will increase the time span of the group stage and therefore affect the broadcasting side of things as less relevant matches will take place over a longer period of time. Surely, fans won't be wanting Zambia vs Bolivia on their TV screens on a weekend in June 2026 and that is what will be on agenda for FIFA when they revert to the four-team group.

How will the KO stage work?

As things stand, the current FIFA World Cup format guarantees an easy passage to the KO stage as teams play in a structured format of Round of 16, Quarterfinal, Semifinal and then followed by a final. So with 48 teams likely to be split into 12 groups, it will create a problem in structuring the format as the KO stage will either start with R16 or a Round of 32.

If the R32 is opted by FIFA, then the potential champion will play five matches in the KO's while any team playing in the later stage and getting knocked out will face harsh reality due to the fatigue factor. Also worth noting, FIFA will have to take the Euro KO stage approach to allot the remaining 20 KO spots apart from the 12 group winners to structure the Round of 32.

In case FIFA opts for R16, then only four teams from the runners-up lot of groups will be available for the Round of 16 as 12 other teams will be the group winners. Again this will mean that eight group runners-up teams are likely to miss out on the KO spot.

What is the best possible plan?

While a R32 remains an out-of-the-box and unstructured idea, FIFA could go with a revised plan of 12 group winners directly qualifying for the R16. On the flip side of things, the eight best group runners-up will compete in the crossover matches like in Field Hockey. In this case, the eight best group runners-up will compete in an unofficial R32 where the winners will compete in the R16.

While these plans are still in the if's and but's, the fans might well have to end up watching some boring irrelevant games over the weekend of June and July 2026 as the structured plan looks to give entries to teams having less exposure to compete at the global stage.

While the question for the format is set to be answered, other questions like the quality of matches, length of the group stage, the longevity of the tournament and player health and fitness issues remain unanswered. It is also worth keeping an eye on the Television Rated Point (TRP) as TV fans are likely to show their back to big teams facing small teams for a long period of time while big matches are likely to take place occasionally in the group stage. So we are less likely to see Spain vs Portugal match in the group stage as FIFA accelerates its plans to revamp the FIFA World Cup for the 2026 edition which will be spread across three countries while teams will gather to conquer the holy grail of football.
