FIFA World Cup 2022: Final week schedule, matches, timings, when and where to watch

Goals by Oliver Giroud and Aurelien Tchouameni gave France a 2-1 win over England that took the holders into a World Cup semi-final with Morocco after Harry Kane equalised from the spot but then blazed a second late penalty over the bar on Saturday. France are now one win away from becoming the first back-to-back finalists since Brazil in 2002 and two from becoming the third team to retain the trophy after Brazil in 1962 and Italy in 1938.

They had to work hard for their win though as the first tournament knockout match between the two old sporting rivals maintained the excitement of this extraordinary quarter-final weekend.

France went ahead after 17 minutes, breaking as England were still complaining about a foul not given on Bukayo Saka. Antoine Griezmann rolled the ball invitingly into the path of Tchouameni, whose 25-yard low shot flew just inside the post and beyond goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

England eventually got going, pushing and probing, though without too much precision, though France keeper Hugo Lloris was quick off his line to save at the feet of Kane, then parried another drive from England’s captain.

Lloris was in action again at the start of the second half, tipping a fierce Jude Bellingham shot over the bar as England came out full of purpose.

Saka, who had looked their most threatening player in the first half, was then tripped by Tchouameni and Kane smashed the penalty high beyond his Tottenham Hotspur team mate Lloris to draw level with Wayne Rooney as England’s record scorer on 53. England were buoyed by the goal and were playing with huge confidence but though centre-back Harry Maguire brushed a post with a header they could not make their dominance count.

Instead France hit back as Griezmann swung in a cross that Giroud did brilliantly to reach in front of Maguire and plant his header into the net for his fourth goal of the tournament.

England were given another lifeline via VAR when Theo Hernandez flattened Mason Mount but Kane sent his spot kick wildly over the bar six minutes from time.

England pushed for an equaliser but when Marcus Rashford's added-time free kick fizzed just over the bar they fell to their seventh defeat in 10 World Cup quarter-finals.

FIFA World Cup 2022: France send England packing, qualify for semis with 2-1 win in quarters

Morocco continued to produce excellent results in FIFA World Cup 2022 as on Saturday they stunned Portugal 1-0 to enter the semis for the very first time. With this win, Morocco became the third team after Croatia and Argentina to reach last four of this World Cup; besides, they also became the first African nation ever to reach this far in a FIFA World Cup. A header by striker Youssef En-Nesyri in the first half saw Morocco cruising ahead with Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal bowing out of this edition.

The third quarterfinal of the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Al Thumama Stadium got underway with a lot of buzz and noise all around the stadium. Though the news of star Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo starting on the bench broke many hearts, the fans didn’t shy away from treating the XI with delight. The first half saw the underdogs, Morocco dominating all throughout. They were brave in their approach, attacking in their style of play and above all looked confident.

Morocco opened the scoring in the 42nd minute with striker Youssef En-Nesyri netting one through a header. A lovely long cross from full-back Y.A Allah resulted in Nesyri giving a beautiful finish. The first half ended with Morocco leading 1-0.

The second half brought fresh energy into the game. Cristiano Ronaldo coming on a substitute sounded like celebration as he equalled the men's international world record of 196 caps, a record set by Kuwait international Bader Al-Mutawa. His inclusion saw Portugal changing gears immediately. They started to press more and even came close on creating chances.

However, a fruitful result didn’t look like coming despite top efforts. In the end, the star-studded Portugal was left dejected after going down 0-1 to 10-man Morocco. The 2016 Euro Cup winners knocked out of the FIFA World Cup 2022, and with this, Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of winning a World Cup with Portugal also diminished.

The first of the four quarterfinals started with Croatia going about their business pretty well in the starting few minutes. By keeping the possession and having the ball control saw Croatia create more chances in the middle. Brazil, on the other hand, looked like playing the catching game. Both teams did create a chance or two but neither could find the back of the net by the end of first half.

In the second half, the story didn’t look like changing much with both teams coming close on scoring on odd occasions but failing eventually. Brazil this time looked more composed and even had the better ball control. Coach Tite, in a surprising move, substituted winger Vinicius Jr with another youngster Rodrygo in the 64th minute while Croatians also made a few changes on the sidelines. The game in usual time ended with no goals scored.

Come the first half of extra time, Brazil looked like breaking the shackles and they did the same. Neymar scored the all-important goal for Brazil and the stadium erupted. But, the celebration didn't last for long as Croatia came from behind to equal the score. It was in the 116th minute when Bruno Petkovic hammered one in to make it 1-1. The match then moved to the penalty shootout.

The Croatian players showed nerves of steel while hitting penalties, while the Brazilians looked underconfident during their turn.

Qatar has launched a work safety investigation into the death of a Filipino, officials said on Thursday, following reports that the man died while working at a training site during the soccer World Cup. Qatar's treatment of migrant workers has come under enormous scrutiny during the build-up to the tournament, with human rights groups accusing the Gulf state of systematic labour abuses -- charges rejected by the government. Nasser Al Khater, chief executive of the 2022 World Cup in Doha, confirmed to Reuters that a worker had died, but gave no further details. He offered his condolences to his family and said "death is a natural part of life".

The Philippines' foreign ministry confirmed in a statement that one of its nationals had died while working at a resort south of the capital Doha. It said its embassy was "working with legal authorities to ascertain more details of his passing". Online sports publication The Athletic on Wednesday reported that the man worked for a company contracted to fix lights in a car park at the Sealine Resort, the training site of the Saudi national team. It said he died after he slipped off a ramp while walking alongside a forklift and hit his head on concrete.

Citing multiple unnamed sources, it said the accident occurred during the World Cup, but did not specify when. The statement from the Philippines said it would not provide further details out of respect for the man's family. The resort did not respond to a Reuters' query. "If the investigation concludes that safety protocols were not followed, the company will be subject to legal action and severe financial penalties," said a Qatar government official, who declined to be named. "The rate of work-related accidents has consistently declined in Qatar since strict health and safety standards were introduced and enforcement has been stepped up," he said.

Meanwhile, in a statement, FIFA said that it "is deeply saddened by this tragedy and our thoughts and sympathies are with the worker's family." "FIFA will be in a position to comment further once the relevant processes in relation to the worker's passing have been completed," added the football's world governing body.

DISPUTED DEATH NUMBERS

Since being awarded World Cup hosting rights in 2010, Qatar had come under the microscope over its treatment of migrant workers, who account for the majority of its population. The tournament, the first to be held in the Middle East where other countries have also faced criticism over migrant workers' rights, has been mired in controversy with some soccer stars and European officials criticising Qatar's human rights record, including on labour, LGBT+ and women's rights.

Qatar's World Cup organisers, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, said in a statement that it was not involved in the Qatari investigation as "the deceased (was) working as a contractor, not under the remit of the SC". The number of work-related deaths in Qatar is in dispute. Britain's Guardian newspaper reported last year that at least 6,500 migrant workers - many of them working on World Cup projects - had died in Qatar since 2010, based on its calculations from official records.

In response, Qatar said the number of deaths was proportionate to the size of the migrant workforce, and included many non-manual workers, adding that every life lost was a tragedy. The SC said that three work-related deaths and 37 non-work-related deaths had occurred on World Cup-related projects. "Death is a natural part of life, whether it's at work, whether it's in your sleep," Khater said, voicing disappointment at journalists' questions about The Athletic report. "We're in the middle of a World Cup. And we have a successful World Cup. And this is something you want to talk about right now?" he said.

Brazil could be without the services of full-back Alex Sandro in their quarterfinal match against Croatia on Friday, December 9th, head coach Tite has said. The five-time winners are already struggling to play their best XI as a few of their first-team players are down and out due to injuries. With players like Gabriel Jesus and Alex Tellas already out of the tournament, the injury scare to another full-back Alex Sandro will only pile up worries for the coach.

Much like Neymar, Sandro also suffered discomfort during Brazil’s first group game against Serbia. While Neymar, who sustained an ankle injury, returned to the playing XI during the match against South Korea, Sandro is still on the bench getting recovered from the muscle pain he felt in his left hip.

Speaking to the media ahead of the first quarterfinal of FIFA World Cup 2022, Brazil coach Tite said looking at Sandro’s current situation, he doesn’t look like starting on Friday.

"All indications are towards (Alex Sandro) not participating (in the match against Croatia)," Tite told media. "He has a different injury (than the ankle injury Neymar and Danilo suffered). He still needs to push a little harder; I have to see with the medical and physical department. It will depend on this afternoon."

In absence of Alex Tellas and with Sandro also out, Danilo started on the left flank position against South Korea – a contest Brazil won handsomely by 4-1. However, if the situation remains the same Danilo will begin in the same position against Croatia while centre-back Eder Militao is likely to play as a right-back.

Speaking on this change in role, Danilo said, “I hope (Alex Sandro) can train well and be available. I'm healthy and I'm comfortable playing in all three defensive positions. I believe that I’ll make the transition soon to centre-back because I feel very comfortable playing there at Juventus."

Speaking on this change in role, Danilo said, “I hope (Alex Sandro) can train well and be available. I'm healthy and I'm comfortable playing in all three defensive positions. I believe that I’ll make the transition soon to centre-back because I feel very comfortable playing there at Juventus." Brazil’s match against Croatia will be played at Education City Stadium.

In Portugal's Round of 16 tie versus Switzerland in the ongoing FIFA World Cup, in Qatar, Portuguese coach Fernando Santos stunned one and all as the team's starting XI didn't comprise captain and superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo. A lot was said and written about his absence as the 37-year-old finally made an appearance in the 73rd minute but couldn't make any impact in his side's 6-1 thrashing of the Swiss line-up.

Ever since Ronaldo was benched versus Switzerland, reports have been doing the rounds that the star forward threatened to leave the Portugal camp after not being in the starting XI. During the game, he was seen celebrating his side's goals but was spotted heading towards the tunnel at the final whistle when his teammates were celebrating the victory with fans in the stadium. Now, the Portugal FA have brushed aside all such claims and stated that Ronaldo's commitment towards the team remains unquestionable.

A statement from Portugal FA read, "News released this Thursday reports that Cristiano Ronaldo threatened to leave the national team during a conversation with Fernando Santos, national coach. The FPF clarifies that at no time did the captain of the National Team, Cristiano Ronaldo, threaten to leave the national team in Qatar."

The National Team - players, coaches, and FPF structure - is, as it has been since the first day, fully committed and enthusiastic in building what the country wants to be Portugal's best-ever participation in a World Cup," it added.

After the Portugal vs Swiss encounter, coach Santos opened up on the decision to bench Ronaldo. He said, "Cristiano and Ramos are different players. There is no problem with the national team captain," Santos said. "It was strategic. Players are different. I also started Diogo Dalot, and Raphael Guerrero; however, Joao Cancelo is a fabulous player. That's what I thought for the game against Switzerland; in another game, it might be different."

FIFA World Cup: Portugal FA reacts to rumours of Cristiano Ronaldo threatening to leave squad

The FA, in a statement released recently, said England and Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling is set to return to the camp ahead of the quarterfinal clash against France on Saturday night. Sterling was not available for selection in England’s 3-0 win over Senegal as he had headed home because of a robbery that took place at his house. Though his family, which was present inside the house when the burglars broke in is said to be unharmed.

The FA in a statement said, “Raheem Sterling will return to England's World Cup base in Qatar. The Chelsea forward temporarily left to attend to a family matter but is now expected to rejoin the squad in Al Wakrah on Friday ahead of the quarter-final with France.”

England have received a massive boost ahead of their all-important knockout clash against France at the FIFA World Cup 2022. With Raheem now returning and also likely to remain available for selection, the English forward line will pose a definite threat to the world champions. Alongside Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Phil Foden, all three of who have contributed with goals and assists, Raheem will surely be fighting for a starting place. This, however, is one good headache coach Gareth Southgate will like to have. So far in the tournament, England played as a dominant unit, having beaten Iran 6-2 in their opener and then Wales and Senegal with a 3-0 margin.

Having enjoyed their previous outings against two-time winners France with a 2-0 lead in World Cup meetings in the past, England will be confident of ending France’s run at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar.

The last of the four quarterfinal matches will be live-streamed in India on Sunday, December 11th at 00:30 AM IST on Sports 18 channels on TV and on JioCinema App.

In a rather strange event that took place ahead of the first quarterfinal clash between Brazil and Croatia, a cat interrupted Brazil’s presser, leaving everyone including winger Vinicius Jr and Brazil’s manager who were among the attendees laughing about it. The incident took place on Friday, December 7th when a cat out of nowhere climbed up the table. Brazil’s manager Vinicius Rodigues without hesitating picked the cat up in a rough manner and rather threw it aside, and then continued with the presser. This whole incident left everyone having a small giggle over it while regular questions continued afterward. In Doha, stray cats roaming around the streets are a common sight.

Over the period, Brazil have enjoyed its dominance over Croatia, having remained unbeaten (3 wins and 1 draw) so far in all of its past four meetings. This time also Brazil will look to maintain its winning streak.

If they manage to win, they will reach the semis of the World Cup ninth time.

Germany coach Hansi Flick will remain in his position despite his side's dismal performance at the World Cup, the DFB said in a statement on Wednesday (December 7).

Flick and team director Oliver Bierhoff were widely criticised after their second consecutive group-stage exit at a World Cup in Qatar.

Bierhoff became the first casualty after agreeing to leave his post two years before his contract ends, but Flick will stay on.

"We are all convinced that Euro 2024 in our own country represents a great opportunity for football in Germany. Our goal is to make this tournament a sporting success. We have full confidence in Hansi Flick," said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf in a statement.

"With regard to Oliver Bierhoff's successor, we have agreed that we will first discuss the future structure of this position within the DFB and then make a personnel decision."

Germany crashed out of the tournament in Qatar after losing to Japan, drawing with Spain and beating Costa Rica in the last Group E match. Spain and Japan advanced from the group.

The Germans also tumbled out of the 2018 World Cup at the group stage - at the time their earliest exit in 80 years.

They also failed to advance past the round of 16 at Euro 2020 last year.

FIFA World Cup 2022 Quarter Finals: Teams, schedule, all you need to know

Portugal's Goncalo Ramos scored a hat-trick on his first World Cup start to help his side beat Switzerland 6-1 on Tuesday and send them through to the quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years, setting up a clash with Morocco.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos benched skipper and all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, tasking Benfica forward Ramos with leading the line despite the 21-year-old making his debut just three days before the World Cup in a friendly.

Ramos had played only 10 minutes as a substitute in Qatar but the youngster looked like he belonged on the big stage with a memorable performance for Portugal who did not miss Ronaldo - a late substitute who had a goal ruled out for offside.

Ramos opened the scoring in the 17th minute by picking up Joao Felix's incisive pass before blasting the ball from a tight angle into the top corner to put the Portuguese ahead.

Portugal doubled their lead through skipper Pepe when the 39-year-old timed his leap to perfection to rise above the two Swiss centre backs and head home from a Bruno Fernandes corner in the 33rd minute, with Yann Sommer well beaten yet again.

The Swiss keeper did well to deny Ramos his second goal of the half with a fingertip save from a late counter-attack as the Portuguese went in with a 2-0 halftime lead.

But Sommer could do nothing when Diogo Dalot sent in a cross six minutes after the restart, with Ramos in the right place again at the near post to slip the ball between his legs to give Portugal a three-goal cushion.

The Portuguese piled on the misery when they carved open the Swiss defence with another flowing counter-attack in which Ramos found Raphael Guerreiro in acres of space and the full back fired the ball past Sommer to make it 4-0 in the 55th.

Switzerland softened the blow just before the hour mark when defender Manuel Akanji sneaked in unmarked at the far post from a corner to slip a shot home after Portugal failed to clear.

But a vibrant Portugal attack roared back when Ramos was set through on goal by Felix and just when it looked like he had lost the ball with a heavy touch, the forward chipped it over the onrushing Sommer to complete a well-deserved hat-trick.

Substitute Rafael Leao then put the icing on the cake in second-half added time with a curling effort into the far corner as the stranded Sommer's shoulders sank while he watched the ball sail past him into the back of the net.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 edition, in Qatar, has lived up to expectations so far. While the group stages saw plenty of upsets, the stage is now set for the last eight round with more action and drama along the way. Several things, both on and off the field, have made heads turn during the Qatar World Cup. During the group stage match between South Korea and Portugal, the Asian side's star footballer Hwang Hee Chan's pictures made heads turn, in what seemed like he was wearing a women's sports bra.

The regular football fans and viewers won't be surprised with players sporting such an attire. However, non-regular fans might be perplexed by what they saw Hee Chan wearing. Here's everything you need to know about such an attire commonly worn by footballers across the globe:

The vest, appearing as a sports bra, is actually regarded as a GPS tracker vest. It is worn beneath jerseys and the vest comprises a GPS device connected to it, useful for collecting individual player GPS data. Such a device is placed in a small pouch at the backside of the GPS tracker vest.

The action continues in the FIFA World Cup 2022 edition with Portugal taking on Switzerland in the Round of 16 clash on Wednesday. After the likes of Argentina, France, England, Croatia, Netherlands have booked a spot in the quarter-finals, the onus will now be on Cristiano Ronaldo-starrer Portugal line-up to get the better of the Swiss team.

Talking about Portugal, they reached the Round of 16 with wins over Uruguay and Ghana before going down to South Korea, who have bowed out of the competition with 4-1 defeat at the hands of Brazil in their R-16 clash. Meanwhile, Switzerland defeated Cameroon and Serbia and lost to Brazil, by 1-0 deficit, to reach this far. They can certainly challenge the Portuguese line-up and rely on Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler to play the anchors, from the midfield with Vargas and Shaqiri opearing from the flanks. Breel Embolo has been their in-form player and will like to come good once again.

From Portugal, the onus will definitely be on Ronaldo, Diogo Dalot, Pepe, Dias, Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix. Overall, an exciting battle is surely on the cards.

Brazil was at its very best as they dominated proceedings versus South Korea in the Round of 16 battle in the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday (December 06). As a result, the five-time winners went past the South Koreans, 4-1, to book a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar. While the likes of Neymar, Richarlison, etc. spearheaded the show for Brazil, with a 4-0 lead before the first half, they conceded only one goal, in the 76th minute, to showcase their dominance.

After the match, the Brazilian line-up won hearts by paying a rich tribute to legendary footballer Pele, who is reportedly undergoing treatment for a respiratory issue in Sao Paulo. In shocking news, England’s Raheem Sterling’s house got attacked by armed burglars on Saturday while he was on national duty as the winger has now headed for home and is unlikely to return, coach Gareth Southgate has confirmed. This vicious act happened a day before England’s last-16 match against Senegal. Just before the start of the game against Senegal, it got reported that Raheem is unavailable for selection but the reason was unknown to everyone outside of the English camp then.

England head coach Gareth Southgate alongside the captain Harry Kane came out in support of Sterling given the magnitude of the situation. Southgate said, "At the moment clearly the priority is for him to be with his family. We're going to support that and leave him to have as much time as he needs."

“Our thoughts are with him and his family. It’s a private matter but it’s never easy to see one of your teammates and friends deal with something like that. We’ll have to take it day by day. I’m sure Raheem will speak to the manager and take the best decision for him and his family. That’s the most important thing. We send him our best wishes and hope to see him as soon as possible,” Kane said.

Although Raheem Sterling’s commitment to the team was never in doubt, to let go of him in this pivotal time was the need of the hour. Speaking on if this incident impacted Raheem’s or the team’s training in any way ahead of the Senegal clash, Southgate said, “It didn’t impact the team selection. I spent a lot of time with Raheem this morning. You have days where events happen and you have to deal with them, so he’s on his way home and yeah, we’re obviously mindful of him being allowed space and his privacy respected. Soccer great Pele on Monday backed Brazil's national team ahead of their World Cup round of 16 match against South Korea, saying he will watch the game from hospital after being admitted there last week as he battles colon cancer.
