<p>Former Germany World Cup winner Mesut Ozil has called time on his illustrious football career as he hangs his boots at the age of 34. Ozil, part of the German side that beat Argentina and Brazil on their way to the World cup glory retired with 92 caps for the national side while İstanbul Başakşehir turned out to be his last club. <p>As things stand, the current FIFA World Cup format guarantees an easy passage to the KO stage as teams play in a structured format of Round of 16, Quarterfinal, Semifinal and then followed by a final. So with 48 teams likely to be split into 12 groups, it will create a problem in structuring the format as the KO stage will either start with R16 or a Round of 32.</p>

<p>If the R32 is opted by FIFA, then the potential champion will play five matches in the KO's while any team playing in the later stage and getting knocked out will face harsh reality due to the fatigue factor. Also worth noting, FIFA will have to take the Euro KO stage approach to allot the remaining 20 KO spots apart from the 12 group winners to structure the Round of 32.</p>

<p>In case FIFA opts for R16, then only four teams from the runners-up lot of groups will be available for the Round of 16 as 12 other teams will be the group winners. Again this will mean that eight group runners-up teams&nbsp;are likely to miss out on the KO spot.</p>

<p>World Cup winner French centre-back Raphael Varane announced his retirement from international football on Thursday at the age of 29.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I’ve been contemplating this for several months and deciding it’s the right time for me to retire internationally," wrote Varane in a social media post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Varane made his French debut, nearly a decade ago in 2013 against Georgia in the World Cup qualifiers. In total, he won 93 caps for Les Bleus and was touted as the potential successor of captain Hugo Lloris.&nbsp;</p>
