A former security officer in the US has pleaded guilty to having tried to sell classified national security information to a Russian agent.

Army veteran Jareh Sebastian Dalke, 31 years old, allegedly sold the information to an undercover FBI agent, who he thought was a Russian agent.

Now, according to the plea deal, prosecutors have asked for 22 years in prison for the Colorado man for accepting the allegations, even as a crime of this severity attracts a possible life sentence.

The judge will decide his fate in April next year when his sentence will be announced.

Dalke’s engagements with the ‘Russian agent’

Dalke told the undercover FBI agent that his heritage ties him “to your country” and that he wanted to “cause change” after the USA’s role in “damaging the world.”

In court documents, he also said he was $237,000 in debt.

According to the plea deal, he was paid $16,499 in cryptocurrency last year for excerpts of some documents that he passed on to the agent to show what he had, and then he offered to sell the rest of the information he had for $85,000.

The agent instructed him to visit Denver's downtown train station on September 28, 2022, and send the documents through a secure digital connection within a four-hour timeframe. Dalke, who had his laptop with him, initially used the connection to send a thank-you letter in Russian, expressing his anticipation of a mutually beneficial friendship, as outlined in the plea deal.

Shortly after he transferred all the files from his laptop, FBI agents apprehended him.

What classified information did Dalke try to sell?

As stated in the indictment, the information Dalke intended to provide to Russia involved a threat assessment of the military capabilities of an undisclosed third country.

It also included details about sensitive US defence capabilities, some of which pertained to the same foreign nation.

The terms of the plea deal stipulate that Dalke must cooperate with authorities, sharing truthful and valuable insights into his actions and their consequences.

US: 'Sticky Note Bandit' attempts fourth bank robbery in two weeks as helpless FBI seeks public help

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) told a senior agent to "decline to respond" to questions about the Hunter Biden investigation posed by the US Congress' House Oversight Committee, reported The New York Post. In his letter to the agent, FBI's general counsel Jason Jones described the Hunter Biden case as "ongoing". The letter was reportedly sent on Sunday.
In the United States, the attorneys for former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent Peter Strzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page deposed FBI director Christopher Wray under oath this week, media outlet ABC News reported on Friday. Strzok and Page are suing the federal government separately over their exits from the FBI, but their lawyers are reportedly working together.

The report further mentioned that two people familiar with the situation confirmed the closed-door deposition took place on Tuesday. It is said that it may pave the way for former president Donald Trump's sworn deposition in the coming weeks.

FBI director Christopher Wray deposed under oath in lawsuit over FBI agent's firing

A joint operation by Delhi Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Interpol busted a call centre gang operating from India which scammed US citizens out of $20 million by impersonating a high-ranking officer from the US Drugs Enforcement Administration (DEA), according to Delhi Police. The team arrested six individuals. It includes four in India, one in Uganda, and one in Canada.

Arrested masterminds

The arrested individuals are Vatsal Mehta, Parth Armarkar, Deepak Arora, and Prashant Kumar. Mehta is believed to be the mastermind behind the operation, while Armarkar managed call centres in Uganda and India. The gang would impersonate a senior DEA officer named Uttam Dhillon and contact potential victims.

HCS Dhaliwal, Special Commissioner of Police, Delhi Police Special Cell said, "The FBI informed us of Parth Armarkar, who is originally from Gujarat but has been living in Uganda for a long time. In Uganda, he ran call centres. US's DEA has had a senior officer, Uttam Dhillon. He (Armarkar) impersonated his identity and called the potential victims," as per media reports.

Impersonation, scam technique

Their common approach involved informing the targets that child pornographic material had been confiscated at the US-Mexico border, claiming that their contact information was found during the investigation.

To avoid serious legal consequences, the victims were coerced into paying a penalty.

The gang carefully selected targets, primarily wealthy individuals unlikely to report the scam to law enforcement agencies.

Ted Kaczynski, Unabomber who terrorised US for almost 20 years, died by suicide: Report

A report claims President Joe Biden was allegedly paid $5 million by an executive of the Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings, where his son Hunter Biden sat on the board, a confidential human source told the FBI during a June 2020 interview. More in this report.

US President Joe Biden accused of taking $5 million bribe

Robert Hanssen, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent who spied for Russia was found dead in a top-security prison in the US on Monday (June 5), according to prison officials. Hanssen secretly fed Russia some of the deepest secrets in the 80s and 90s.

Hanssen offered himself to Soviet intelligence in 1985. He traded government secrets and also provided identities of US moles in the Soviet and later Russian governments. In exchange, he received diamonds and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

He worked in FBI's key New York counterintelligence department and was tasked with catching foreign spies. His work at the unit allowed him to cover his tracks as he investigated Russian agents in the US.

He was finally caught at a dead drop for exchanging messages with his Russian handlers in suburban Virginia just outside Washington on February 18, 2001.

A year later he was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.

'Most damaging spy' found unresponsive

A statement from high-security US prison in Florence, Colorado said that Hanssen (79) was found unresponsive early on Monday. He was later pronounced dead, said the statement.

The FBI has, in past, regarded him as "the most damaging spy in bureau history."

Before joining the FBI, Hanssen served as a policeman in Chicago. He joined the bureau in 1976. Nine years later, he took a position in the counterintelligence unit. The unit tracked and tried to recruit Soviet officials at the United Nations.

Soon, Hanssen offered his services to the Soviets under the name "Ramon Garcia". Even his handlers did not know his true identity.

At the time that he was caught, he was considered the most damaging mole ever to pass US secrets to a foreign government, with thousands of classified US documents handed over to the Soviets, and later to the Russians.

Those included US nuclear war plans, software for tracking spying investigations, and the identities of US sources in Moscow, including Dmitri Polyakov or "Tophat," a Soviet general who fed his country's secrets to the United States between the 1960s and 1980s.

Polyakov was arrested in 1986 and executed several years later.

It is believed that Hanssen was motivated by money and intrigue rather than ideology. He reportedly reaped USD 1.4 million in cash and diamonds for his spying.

In May 2002 he pleaded guilty to 15 counts of espionage in exchange for a prosecution agreement not to seek the death penalty.

"I apologize for my behavior. I am shamed by it." Hanssen said at his sentencing.

'Most damaging spy' found unresponsive A statement from high-security US prison in Florence, Colorado said that Hanssen (79) was found unresponsive early on Monday. He was later pronounced dead, said the statement. The FBI has, in past, regarded him as "the most damaging spy in bureau history." Before joining the FBI, Hanssen served as a policeman in Chicago. (With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here. WATCH WION LIVE HERE ×

Lord Mountbatten, her second cousin, was killed in a 1979 IRA explosion off the coast of County Sligo, Republic of Ireland.

An official FBI letter noted, "the possibility of threats against the British Monarchy is ever-present from the Irish Republican Army (IRA)" ahead of the late Queen's personal visit to Kentucky in 1989.

It went on to say that "Boston and New York are requested to remain alert for any threats against Queen Elizabeth II on the part of IRA members and immediately furnish same to Louisville," in Kentucky.

Attack planned on royal yacht during Queen Elizabeth II's 1983 US visit: FBI

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI often misused a digital surveillance tool to exploit a restricted database of Americans' personal communications, while checking up the names of crime victims and participants in Black Lives Matter protests and the 2021 Capitol assault, news agency AFP reported citing a newly unsealed court document.

The declassified rulings from the secretive Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Court noted that the FBI accessed the database 278,000 times in recent years, frequently with no explanation. FBI routinely accessed Americans' private communications: Report

A report by US special counsel says FBI lacked actual evidence to probe Trump's 2016 presidential campaign & relied too heavily on tips provided by political opponents. The US prosecutor claims the probe into alleged collusion between Russia & Trump's 2016 campaign was based on flimsy evidence & had serious flaws. Trump's attorney general Bill Barr had appointed special counsel John Durham to address allegations.

US special counsel slams FBI probe of Trump-Russia collusion

On May 9, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sabotaged a suite of malicious software used by Russian spies. According to senior American law enforcement officials, FBI technical experts identified and disabled malware wielded by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) against an undisclosed number of American computers. The officials said that FSB officials behind the malware- known as Snake, were part of a notorious hacking group tracked by the private sector and known as "Turla."

This sabotage by the FBI provided a glimpse of the digital tug-of-war between the United States and Russia.

What is Snake?

According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on May 9, the Snake malware is considered the most sophisticated cyber espionage tool designed and used by Center 16 of FSB for long-term intelligence collection on sensitive targets. The CISA said that to carry out operations using this tool, the FSB created a covert peer-to-peer (P2P) network of numerous Snake-infected computers around the world.

"Many systems in this P2P network serve as relay nodes which route disguised operational traffic to and from Snake implants on the FSB’s ultimate targets. Snake’s custom communications protocols employ encryption and fragmentation for confidentiality and are designed to hamper detection and collection efforts," the CISA added.

The agency said that it identified the Snake infrastructure in more than 50 countries across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, including the United States and Russia itself.

The FSB started developing Snake as “Uroburos” in late 2003. The development of the initial versions of the implant appeared to be completed around early 2004, with cyber operations first conducted using the implant shortly thereafter.

The malware's targets

Though Snake has used infrastructure across all industries, its targeting is "purposeful and tactical in nature," according to the CISA. The FSB used Snake to collect sensitive intelligence from high-priority targets such as government networks, journalists and research facilities.

Sharing an example, the CISA said that FSB actors used Snake to access and exfiltrate sensitive international relations documents, as well as other diplomatic communications, from a victim in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) nation.

Within the US, the Russian security agency victimised industries including education, small business and media organisations. Critical infrastructure sectors in the US including government facilities were also targeted.

The people behind Snake

As mentioned earlier, FSB officials behind Snake were part of the hacking group called Turla. On May 9, the US Justice Department said in a statement that for nearly 20 years, "this unit, referred to in court documents as Turla, used versions of Snake to steal sensitive documents from hundreds of computer systems in at least 50 countries, which have belonged to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member governments, journalists, and other targets of interest to the Russian Federation."

The officials said that FSB officials behind the malware- known as Snake, were part of a notorious hacking group tracked by the private sector and known as "Turla." This sabotage by the FBI provided a glimpse of the digital tug-of-war between the United States and Russia. The malware's targets Though Snake has used infrastructure across all industries, its targeting is "purposeful and tactical in nature," according to the CISA. The people behind Snake As mentioned earlier, FSB officials behind Snake were part of the hacking group called Turla. On May 9, the US Justice Department said in a statement that for nearly 20 years, "this unit, referred to in court documents as Turla, used versions of Snake to steal sensitive documents from hundreds of computer systems in at least 50 countries, which have belonged to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member governments, journalists, and other targets of interest to the Russian Federation." After stealing these documents, Turla exfiltrated them through a covert network of unwitting Snake-compromised computers in the US and around the world. Operation MEDUSA The FBI-led Operation MEDUSA was behind the sabotage of the Snake malware. The US Justice Department said in its statement that MEDUSA disabled the malware on compromised computers through the use of an FBI-created tool called PERSEUS, which issued commands that caused the Snake malware to overwrite its vital components. "The FBI developed a tool named PERSEUS which establishes communication sessions with the Snake malware implant on a particular computer, and issues commands that causes the Snake implant to disable itself without affecting the host computer or legitimate applications on the computer," the statement said. The US had started investigating Snake and Snake-related malware tools for nearly two decades. "The US government has monitored FSB officers assigned to Turla conducting daily operations using Snake from a known FSB facility in Ryazan, Russia," the statement added. “The Justice Department, together with our international partners, has dismantled a global network of malware-infected computers that the Russian government has used for nearly two decades to conduct cyber-espionage, including against our NATO allies,” US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said on the sabotage. “We will continue to strengthen our collective defences against the Russian regime’s destabilizing efforts to undermine the security of the United States and our allies,” he added. A word of caution for victims The Justice Department pointed out that even though Operation MEDUSA disabled the Snake malware on compromised computers, victims should take additional steps to protect themselves from further harm. "The operation to disable Snake did not patch any vulnerabilities or search for or remove any additional malware or hacking tools that hacking groups may have placed on the victim," it said. "Turla frequently deploys a “keylogger” with Snake that Turla can use to steal account authentication credentials, such as usernames and passwords, from legitimate users," the department added and cautioned victims about being aware that the Russian hacking group could use these stolen credentials to fraudulently re-access compromised computers and other accounts.
The search for the Texas gunman who allegedly killed five of his neighbours including a young boy entered its third day with false alarms and few apparent leads, as of Monday (May 1). Meanwhile, a United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) source told CNN that the suspect had entered the country illegally and been deported by immigration officials at least four times.

Suspect was an illegal immigrant

A report by CNN, citing the ICE source also said that the suspect identified by ICE as Francisco Oropesa Perez-Torres was first removed by an immigration judge back in 2009. However, the suspect’s current immigration status remains unclear and it is also not known how long he was in the US since last deported.

“At an unknown time and location, Perez-Torres unlawfully reentered the United States, and was apprehended and removed several more times by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in September 2009, January 2012, and July 2016,” the ICE source, who was not named, told CNN on Monday.

In a statement, the ICE also said that it identified the suspect as a Mexican and confirmed that he was apprehended and deported several times. Oropesa was also convicted of driving while intoxicated in January 2012 in Montgomery County, Texas and sentenced to jail, said ICE on Monday.

Oropesa remains at large

The FBI agent on the scene near Houston acknowledged they have little to go on as of now, and are widening the manhunt, reported the Associated Press. The news agency citing the suspect’s neighbours said they had lived on the street for years now, and said Oropeza has been deported four times since 2009.

This comes as more than 250 law enforcement officials are involved in Oropesa’s manhunt, while the suspect, as per an FBI official, is considered armed and dangerous. However, despite the involvement of US Marshals, additional manpower, scent-tracking dogs, and even a total of $80,000 in reward money, there is no sign of the suspect.

“I can tell you right now, we have zero leads,” James Smith, the FBI special agent in charge of the case, said Sunday. As of late afternoon Monday, there have been no updates from law enforcement while the trail had apparently gone cold a day prior.

What happened on Friday?

After neighbours asked him to stop firing his rifle, the suspect stepped out of his house on Friday night and started shooting off rounds with an AR-15-style rifle in his yard, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said on Saturday. The shooting took place at a Cleveland, Texas, home.

Wilson Garcia, the father of the one-month-old, and two other men, had walked over to Oropesa’s yard to ask him to stop shooting so close to their home because their baby was sleeping, Garcia told CNN. At a vigil on Sunday, he had also recalled the terrifying efforts of hiding and shielding themselves and their children after Oropeza walked up to the home and began firing, killing his wife first at the front door.

The gunman shot Garcia's wife Sonia Argentina Guzman, before killing three other adults - Diana Velazquez Alvarado (21), Julisa Molina Rivera (31), Jose Jonathan Casarez (18) - and Garcia’s son, Daniel Enrique Laso-Guzman (8).

According to the FBI, They were all believed to be living in the house but were not members of a single family.
