Britain`s three current Formula One drivers, led by seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton, joined leading sports bodies on Friday in a growing boycott of social media to protest online abuse. 
 
The soccer-led campaign has gathered momentum, spreading from clubs and leagues to national and international bodies in tennis, cricket, rugby and cycling. 
 
European soccer body UEFA has said it will stay silent across its platforms over the weekend, starting at 1500 BST (1600 CEST) on Friday. 
 
"To stand in solidarity with the football community, I will be going dark on my social media channels this weekend," said Hamilton, Formula One`s only Black driver, on Instagram where he has 22 million followers. 
 
"There is no place in our society for any kind of abuse, online or not, and for too long it`s been easy for a small few to post hate from behind their screens. 
 
"While a boycott might not solve this issue overnight, we have to call for change when needed, even when it seems like an almost impossible task," added the Mercedes driver, who is racing in Portugal this weekend. 
 
McLaren`s Lando Norris, who has suffered abuse from online trolls and has a million followers on Twitter, said he was also supporting the boycott. 
 
"Everyone struggles with abuse on here at some point and social media companies need to do more to tackle it," said the 21-year-old. "Hiding behind a keyboard is not okay. Enough is enough." 
 
McLaren said the team was not planning to do a blackout, however. 
 
"We think it`s very important for us over the course of a race weekend to have this positive engagement with our fans," team principal Andreas Seidl told reporters on a video call from Portimao. 
 
Williams` George Russell, 23, said it was time to make a change. 
 
"There is far too much online abuse, hatred, negativity, racism that is just undeserved," he said. "I thought it`s our duty to raise as much awareness as possible, not just in sport."

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton says the conviction of a white former police officer for the killing of George Floyd "marks a new dawn in the fight for racial justice".

But the British racing driver warned it was just "one step" on the path towards a more equal society.

Derek Chauvin was found guilty on Tuesday of murdering African-American Floyd following a racially charged trial.

The 19-year veteran of the Minneapolis police force was seen on video kneeling on the neck of Floyd for more than nine minutes as he lay face down and handcuffed on the ground saying repeatedly "I can't breathe" in an incident last May.

Hamilton, who said he had been left furious by Floyd's death, last year equalled Michael Schumacher's record of seven world championships against the backdrop of his personal fight against racism.

The 36-year-old, the sole black driver on the F1 grid, wrote on Instagram: "JUSTICE for George! The emotions I feel right now are hard to describe. Derek Chauvin has been found guilty.&nbsp;

"This is the first time that a white officer has been convicted for killing a black man in Minnesota. This is monumental, George's death is not in vain.

"The result of the Derek Chauvin trial today is the right one. Convicting him of all three charges marks a new dawn in the fight for racial justice."

Hamilton, who continues to kneel ahead of races in a sign of his support for the campaign against racial injustice, said much work still needed to be done.

"This is just one step on the path towards a more equal society," he said. "Since George's death, so many other black people have died at the hands of the police and we must ensure the momentum of today continues. The fight isn't over."

Hamilton is top of the drivers' standings ahead of the third race of the season in Portugal on May 2.

Lewis Hamilton claimed his 99th career pole position in qualifying Saturday for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, with Red Bull's Sergio Perez starting alongside the seven-time world champion's Mercedes at Imola.

Max Verstappen, runner-up to Hamilton at the season-opening race in Bahrain last month, will begin third on the grid in the other Red Bull as the top three were separated by less than one-tenth of a second.

"The day's been great obviously," said Hamilton. "I definitely didn't expect us to be ahead of the two Red Bulls. They've been so quick this weekend.

"There were times when they were six-tenths ahead and we didn't really know where we'd be. But the car was already feeling a lot better from the beginning this weekend."

"I knew going into qualifying and especially that last lap, it was going to take something special," he added.&nbsp;

"It really had to be the most perfect lap and a little bit more to beat the Red Bulls because they really have been so fast all weekend. And I didn't honestly know whether we could do it."

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified in fourth ahead of Pierre Gasly, Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris, who was heading for second but had his lap time deleted for exceeding track limits.

Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas could only manage eighth, with Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll rounding out the top 10.&nbsp;

Carlos Sainz failed to make it to Q3 and will start in 11th position in the second Ferrari.

Two-time former world champion Fernando Alonso was a disappointing 15th, six places behind Alpine team-mate Ocon.

Hamilton edged out Perez by 0.035 seconds, the Mexican in turn sneaking ahead of Verstappen by 0.052sec in just his second race with his new team.

"I didn't expect to be here but I should have been on pole - I did a mistake on my final corner, but tomorrow is what matters," said Perez, after securing his best qualifying position to date ahead of a 193rd Grand Prix start.

Verstappen admitted he paid for his mistake.

"Not so good in Q3. I went off at Turn Three, so a bit messy, not a good lap," he said.

"You can't be good every time, so we'll see what went wrong. It's still P3, which is a good starting position."

Japanese rookie Yuki Tsunoda, who impressed by coming ninth on his F1 debut in Bahrain, planted his Alpha Tauri into the wall coming out of a chicane in Q1 and will set off from the back on Sunday.

"First of all, the body feels OK - no issues," said the 20-year-old Tsunoda.

"Just pushing too much in entry. I had massive instability in entry, massive slap and couldn't control that car and just spun into the barrier.&nbsp;

"The car was amazing and it was just a huge mistake. Really sorry for the team, and I'm just going to have to come back tomorrow."

Italy`s Imola circuit provides a fresh challenge for seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton and young pretender Max Verstappen as the pair prepare for round two of their Formula One battle this weekend. 
 
The circuit, with the Santerno river running alongside and a verdant backdrop of trees and parkland, is a marked contrast to Bahrain`s desert Sakhir track that hosted the opener won by Mercedes` Hamilton. 
 
The fast and flowing anti-clockwise layout is also narrower and bumpier than Bahrain, and with fewer opportunities to overtake which means track position and strategy will play a bigger part. 
 
Red Bull`s Verstappen has started the last two races -- Abu Dhabi at the end of last season and then Bahrain in March -- on pole position and the 23-year-old will be looking to complete his hat-trick. 
 
His car should be well-suited to the circuit characteristics, with the Honda engine also looking a match for Mercedes. 
 
"I’m feeling really relaxed going into this race weekend in Imola, I’m looking forward to going back there," said Verstappen, who crashed out 12 laps from the end last year after a sudden rear tyre failure while in second place. 
 
"We had a positive start to the season so hopefully we can keep that up but it won’t be easy and we need everything to work perfectly to beat our main competition." 
 
Hamilton, winner last year at Imola after a two-day weekend without Friday practice, held off Verstappen against the odds in Bahrain after the Dutchman had dominated the weekend but Mercedes know they have some catching up to do. 
 
"We may have won the first round, but we`re under no illusions that this will be a straightforward season," said team boss Toto Wolff. 
 
"The car is still lacking pace over a single lap and Red Bull appear to have the edge right now. We`re pushing hard to close the gap, and this is a challenge we relish." 
 
Hamilton`s team mate Valtteri Bottas, who took pole at Imola last year when the race returned after a 14-year absence, also has something to prove after finishing third in Bahrain. 
 
So too does Mexican Sergio Perez, lining up for his second race as a Red Bull driver after going from last to fifth in Bahrain. 
 
"I think it’s going to be very tight with Mercedes and we’re going to see if the fight is circuit related," said Perez.

Sebastian Vettel is set to kick off his Formula One campaign with Aston Martin on Sunday, however, he will start from the back of the field after being handed a five-place grid drop and three penalty points at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

According to Stewards, Vettel failed to respect double yellow warning flags at turn one in Saturday's qualifying. Former Ferrari, who qualified at 18th was dropped to last due to the penalty.&nbsp;

"He (Vettel) explained to the Stewards that he saw the smoke ahead of him, but was unsure if it was a lock-up or a stopped car until he was quite close to the car and the smoke was lifting," they added.

"The driver would have received a warning on his dash and the team should have been able to see that the sector had been a double yellow and could have advised the driver as other teams did.

"While the argument that the driver was already inside the sector when it went double yellow evokes sympathy, the Stewards feel it is important to note that he was approaching an incident visible ahead of him."

The 33-year-old German joined Aston Martin to get back to winning ways after a disappointing stint with Ferrari.&nbsp;

World champion Lewis Hamilton saw Max Verstappen top the times in Formula One testing on Sunday and predicted the Dutch star's Red Bull team will be "a different animal" when the season starts in two weeks' time.

Verstappen, who was third behind Hamilton and the Briton's Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas in the 2020 championship, timed a best lap of 1:28.960 on Sunday.

That proved to be the fastest time of the three-day session.

However, rookie Yuki Tsunoda, the first Japanese driver to compete in Formula One since Kamui Kobayashi in 2014, also laid down a marker.

His time on Sunday of 1:29.053 in his AlphaTauri was the second best overall of the week.

Verstappen had also topped the charts on Friday on the opening day at the dusty Sakhir circuit which will also stage the season opener on March 28.

"They are looking strong," said seven-time champion Hamilton.

"They're going to be a different machine or animal this year with, I think, a really good, strong line-up for two drivers and a really good car."

However, Hamilton insisted he was unconcerned as Verstappen had won the last race of 2020 in Abu Dhabi and had momentum on his side.

"Having seen them winning the last race you can only assume they're going to be right there if not at the front, at the first race.

"It's going to be a great, long battle with them through the year," he added.

Verstappen, too, was keen to douse expectations that this could be the year that Red Bull break Mercedes' stranglehold.

"I don't think we are the favourites," Verstappen said.

Carlos Sainz, in a Ferrari, Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen and Hamilton rounded out the top five on Sunday in what also proved to be their top times of the week.

F1 CEO opens up about Lewis Hamilton's future with Mercedes

McLaren driver Lando Norris has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now self-isolating after reassuring fans that he has only shown mild symptoms. Norris becomes the fourth Formula 1 driver after Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll to test positive for the dreaded coronavirus.&nbsp;

Norris, aged 21, is currently in Dubai on holiday ahead of their planned training camp. He took a test for the virus on Monday after recognising loss of taste and smell, which is one of the symptoms for COVID-19.

Norris has informed his team and everyone he had been in touch with recently about the result of his coronavirus test.

McLaren confirmed the development as they released a statement: "McLaren can confirm that Lando Norris tested positive for covid-199 yesterday in Dubai, where he is currently on holiday ahead of a planned training camp. After recognising a loss of taste and smell, he was tested immediately and informed the team.&nbsp;

"In line with local regulation, he is now self-isolating at his hotel for 14 days. He is currently feeling well and reports no other symptoms."

Even Norris took to social media platforms to confirm the development as he said that he has no other symptoms other than loss of taste and smell.

"Hi everyone, hope you are keeping well. Yesterday I lost my sense of taste and smell so immediately self isolated and took a test. It's come back as positive, so I've told everyone that I've been in contact with and will be self isolating for the next 14 days. I feel alright and have no other symptoms but I just wanted to let you all know. Take Care," Norris tweeted.

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto expects Mick Schumacher to have a tough Formula One debut with Haas next year before getting more up to speed in 2022. 
 
Schumacher, the son of Ferrari great and seven times F1 world champion Michael, won the Formula Two title this year and has graduated to the U.S.-owned team with close ties to Maranello. 
 
Haas scored only three points this season and ended up ninth of the 10 teams. 
 
"I think it will be very difficult for him at the start," Binotto told reporters in a video conference when asked what he expected from the 21-year-old Ferrari Academy driver. 
 
"If I look at his past experience in both F2 and F3, normally he is delivering his best in the second season and not the first. 
 
"I think Mick, the way he has developed himself, is learning a lot on the first season and becomes very strong in the second half of the second season. That’s why I think two seasons will be important for him. 
 
"But already on the second I’m expecting to see progress compared to the first one." 
 
Ferrari have held open the possibility of Schumacher one day racing for them but they have Charles Leclerc on a long-term contract while Spaniard Carlos Sainz has signed an initial two-year deal that could be extended. 
 
They also have close ties with Swiss-based Alfa Romeo, who could also be a future destination for Schumacher after Haas, depending on progress. 
 
Binotto said he wanted to see Schumacher getting progressively faster. 
 
"I’m really expecting him to prove how fast he is in an F1 context, both qualifying and the race...to prove that he is very strong in race pace and consistent in terms of bringing the car home in a good position," he said. 
 
Ferrari have strengthened their ties with Haas ahead of next season, with their chassis engineering head Simone Resta transferring across. 
 
Binotto said more Ferrari personnel would follow Resta out as the team is forced to shed staff to meet the terms of a budget cap being introduced next year. 
 
"A few other technicians will move, reducing our organisation which is required for the budget cap but strengthening the organisation of our customers and partner teams," he said. 
 
Those transferred to Haas would remain at Maranello but working out of a completely separate facility with no access to the main Ferrari building, Binotto added.

Sergio Perez to race for Red Bull in F1 2021 season

Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton is hoping to have his future sorted by Christmas now that the Formula One season is over.

The most successful driver in the history of the sport and his Mercedes team, winner of both titles for an unprecedented seventh year in succession, still have to sit down and put pen to paper.

Hamilton is otherwise out of contract in a few weeks’ time.

The issue, even if it looks a foregone conclusion, is the biggest question of several remaining to be answered around the paddock.

“I plan to be here next year. I want to be here next year,” said Hamilton, 35, after finishing third in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi finale.

“Us, as a team, have more to do together and more to achieve both in the sport but even more outside the sport I think. I hope we can begin discussions this week and hopefully get it tied up before Christmas.”

The Briton had put off talks while he focused on the championship and then COVID-19 got in the way, with Hamilton testing positive in Bahrain and going into 10 days of quarantine.

Team boss Toto Wolff said there was no concern.

“It is going to happen. There is no reason it shouldn’t happen now,” he told reporters.

“We’ll have this conversation. We always said that we will do it after the title was won and then the virus delayed us for another 10 days, two weeks and now we just have to sit down, maybe virtually or maybe live.”

Championship runners-up Red Bull must decide who is going to partner Sunday’s race winner Max Verstappen next season with Thai racer Alexander Albon the incumbent but Mexican Sergio Perez in the frame.

Team boss Christian Horner said Albon’s performance in Abu Dhabi was probably his “strongest collective weekend of the season.

“That now gives us a complete set of information to go away and analyse and work out what we are going to do. It’s not going to take too long,” he added.

Williams’s new U.S.-based owners Dorilton Capital have to decide the team’s leadership structure after ending the season under acting principal Simon Roberts.

“We’re working on that right now but I can’t say anything about it this weekend,” Roberts said in Abu Dhabi. “Lots of discussion with Dorilton and when we’re ready we’ll be able to announce how we intend to move forward.”

Ferrari are meanwhile looking for a replacement for CEO Louis Camilleri after he announced his sudden retirement last week for personal reasons.

Haas have private business with Russian driver Nikita Mazepin after condemning the posting of a video on his social media of a female passenger being groped in the back of a car.

“It is still in my pending tray,” said team boss Guenther Steiner.

Formula One, under the new leadership of Stefano Domenicali from January, has also an April 25 slot on the 2021 calendar to fill and no shortage of candidates for a date originally set aside for Vietnam’s now-postponed debut.

Camilleri was appointed in July 2018 as a replacement for Sergio Marchionne who was unwell and died days later. Camilleri himself recently got out of the hospital after being infected by severe COVID-19.&nbsp;

During his tenure, he brought in current team boss Mattia Binotto to replace Maurizio Arrivabene and this year deciding not to retain four-time champion, Sebastian Vettel, next season.

Verstappen edges Bottas in Abu Dhabi practice as Hamilton makes quiet return

Haas driver Romain Grosjean will miss the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to return home to Switzerland where he will receive on-going medical treatment on the burns he suffered on the back of his hands at the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Formula 1 team announced on Sunday.

Pietro Fittipaldi, currently subbing for Grosjean at the Sakhir Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit, will compete again for Haas alongside teammate Kevin Magnussen in Abu Dhabi, December 11-13.

"It is with great sadness that I will not be able to do my final race in Abu Dhabi and be with the team there. We have tried as much as we could with the doctor to recover and to repair my hand, but the risk of racing is too big for my recovery and my health. So, the decision was made that I am not going to race," Grosjean said in a statement.

"It is one of the hardest decisions of my life, but it is obviously one of the wisest. I will miss the team, but I will be supporting them as ever," he added.

That means Bahrain will be his last Grand Prix, in what was his 98th appearance for American team Haas having been with them since the beginning of their F1 project.

"I am naturally very sorry that Romain will miss what was going to be his final race with Haas F1 Team. But we are all in agreement that he has to take the best course of action regarding his treatment and recovery from last Sunday`s incident," stated Guenther Steiner, team principal Haas F1 Team.

"Romain has shown exceptional bravery and amazing spirit over the last few days - we know how badly he wanted to be able to return to the cockpit of the VF-20 in Abu Dhabi. And we all would have loved him to have been there too," he added.&nbsp;

“I’m sure they (the teams) will find a way to balance the car and extract performance from the 2021 tyres.”

Friday practice in Bahrain was the second time teams and drivers have had a chance to evaluate prototypes of the new tyres having also run different versions of them during practice for last month's Portuguese Grand Prix at the Portimao track.

Hamilton, who said the new tyres were three kilos heavier and a second a lap slower, was equally unimpressed after running them at Portimao.

Ferrari chief executive Louis Camilleri told La Gazzetta Dello Sport this week that freezing the power units went against the spirit of Formula One.

"From 2022, the regulations provide for the introduction of a fuel with a 10 per cent ethanol content, but the FIA wants to reach 100 per cent as soon as possible," he added.

"This inevitably involves the development of some engine components."

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the third F1 race to be held in Italy in a virus-hit season, Wolff said developments surrounding the dreaded virus and lockdown situations were worrying signs for F1.&nbsp;

"The situation is becoming more difficult," he said at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari on Friday. "F1 does not put anyone in danger as we stay in our microcosm, but we also cannot ignore that the number of cases in various countries is growing rapidly.

"As of now, Chase Carey (F1 chief executive) has assured us that the schedule remains in place," he said. "But he also said that, against the backdrop of a progressing pandemic, no one knows what the situation will be in a week -- let alone a month."

Meanwhile, discussions are underway about a proposed salary cap on Formula One drivers with teams supportive of the idea.

As per the proposal, a $30 million cap for teams to pay drivers, starting from 2023. All teams can spend more but it has to come out of what will be a $135 million annual budget caps for teams by 2023.
