Jaipur, India
The driver of the Jaipur LPG tanker that exploded, killing 13 people, managed to survive the accident. The deadly accident in which the tanker collided with a truck and exploded, triggered a massive fire, engulfing over 30 vehicles.
The driver, Jaiveer, however, did not sustain any severe injury.
Jaiveer, 40, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Mathura, sensed that the collision had damaged the nozzle of the tanker, following which he escaped before the fire started.
<h2>How did he survive the explosion?</h2>
The police said the driver realised that the nozzle of the tanker had been damaged and a fire would be triggered by the ignition of other vehicles.
He then ran towards the opposite side of the LPG spill, saving his life.

"We cannot blame the tanker driver immediately, as the container truck driver had hit his vehicle. He saw that the tanker's nozzles had broken and realised that there could be an explosion as other drivers were turning on the ignition of their vehicles. So, he fled to save his life," Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Amit Kumar told PTI.
The driver has appeared before the police and will be questioned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), a senior official said on Tuesday.
However, the driver of the container truck, which collided with the tanker, died in the explosion.
The DCP said Jaiveer was among the nine drivers present at the accident scene who managed to escape the fire, Indian news agency PTI reported.  In the deadly incident, more than two dozen people sustained injuries, and 23 are undergoing treatment.
The police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, for rash and negligent driving, causing death by negligent act and causing hurt by endangering life.

Tel Aviv, Israel
Israeli strikes on the Syrian military sites filled the skies with 'colossal' explosions as the blasts got registered on earthquake sensors,  according to a war monitor group.
The military sites located in the coastal Tartus region were targeted by what was one of "the heaviest strikes" in the Syrian area in more than a decade, said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
"Israeli warplanes launched strikes' targeting a series of sites including air defence units and 'surface-to-surface missile depots," the war monitor said in what it called "the heaviest strikes in Syria's coastal region since the start of strikes in 2012."

Earlier, Russia's foreign ministry said that it had evacuated some of the diplomatic staff from Syria, a week after the nation's dictator Bashar al-Assad fled the country.
As per researcher Richard Cordaro, a magnetometer station which is 820km away in Isnik, Turkey also detected the blast.
He said the signal travelled nearly 'twice as fast' as that of a normal earthquake.
In 1971, the Soviet Union was the one to first establish a naval military base in Tartus.
The facility had been classed as a "Material-Technical Support Point" till 2017 and not as a base, and is the only entrance point to the Mediterranean for Russia.
The centre was used for carrying out the supply and delivery of armaments after Russia participated in the Syrian civil war in 2015.
A Kremlin spokesperson said on Wednesday (Dec 11) that Moscow has been in touch with the new authorities in Syria and discussing the future of their bases.

At least three people died Saturday when an apartment complex in The Hague collapsed after a huge explosion and fire, authorities said, with little hope of finding survivors under the rubble.

The blast and resulting inferno destroyed at least five homes but it was not clear how many people were buried in the debris, Mayor Jan van Zanen told reporters.

Police confirmed that three bodies had been pulled from the wreckage, as fears mounted that the toll could rise much higher.

An AFP reporter on-site saw scenes of devastation with debris strewn across the street, burned-out cars, blown-out windows and huge plumes of smoke.

Firefighters tackled the blaze from the ground and from huge cherry-pickers, as ambulances carried the injured to the hospital and police helicopters circled overhead.

"It is not known how many people are still under the rubble. But the reality is that there is only a slim chance of survival for them," said the mayor.

"It is unbelievable what happened there."

The cause of the blast was not immediately clear but police appealed for information about a car seen speeding away from the scene shortly after the explosion.

Van Zanen said there was a small explosion followed by a larger one and a huge fire.

After firefighters had extinguished the blaze, heavy construction equipment moved in to try to clear the rubble.

Elite rescue workers trained to recover survivors from natural disasters scoured the debris, with the help of sniffer dogs.

"I was asleep and suddenly there was this huge bang," Adam Muller, a 14-year-old local resident, told AFP.

"I looked out of the window and just saw flames. It's a massive shock," he added.

<h2>'Like an earthquake'&nbsp;</h2>

Authorities warned locals to keep their windows shut and shut off ventilation systems due to the smoke.

Forensic investigators arrived on the scene to begin to probe a potential cause of the blast, an AFP reporter said.

"Shortly after the explosion, at around 6:15 am, a car drove away at very high speed," police said in a statement.

"The police would like to get in touch with people who saw this car driving or who may have camera footage."

The three floors of the building consisted of shops on the ground floors and five two-storey apartments, authorities said, with living rooms on the second floor and bedrooms on the top.

"It was like an earthquake," said a 53-year-old man who identified himself as Dimi, declining to give his family name.

"Something collapsed but we didn't see where it came from. I know these neighbours. My kids go to school with them."

"My new car has also been seriously damaged," he added.

Hospitals in the area were on standby to treat victims.&nbsp;

Residents told local media the apartment block was mainly inhabited by elderly people and families with children.

Around 40 residents of other blocks near the collapsed building have been evacuated. Some have been taken away by bus to an unknown location.

Prime Minister Dick Schoof wrote on X that he was "shocked by the terrible images of a collapsed apartment building in The Hague."

"My thoughts go out to the victims, all other people involved and the emergency services who are now working on the scene," said Schoof.

He said he had been in contact with the city authorities and promised any help necessary.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander wrote on social media: "We sympathise with those personally affected or are worried about their loved-ones."

An Israeli airstrike targeted Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut, near Al-Qaem mosque, according to a Lebanese security source. The series of four bomb strikes resulted in five deaths, including children and civilians, and left 17 others wounded. Among the dead is Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force commander, Ibrahim Aqil, reportedly the group’s second-in-command after Fuad Shukr, who was killed in a previous Israeli strike in July. While the Israeli military claims it conducted a “targeted strike,” the exact target remains unclear.

In a recent study, it has been revealed that when the Starship&nbsp;rocket of SpaceX exploded during its second flight on November 18, 2023, it led to the formation of a temporary 2,000-km wide hole in the atmosphere of the Earth.&nbsp;

The rocket had exploded just minutes after the launch when the Super Heavy booster of the rocket blew up at an altitude of 90 kilometres.&nbsp;

A few minutes later, another explosion occurred at an altitude of about 150 kilometres which involved the rocket's upper stage.&nbsp;

The research, which was published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, showed that these explosions disrupted the ionosphere, which is a region of the upper atmosphere that is located between 80 to 650 kilometres above the Earth.&nbsp;

This part of the atmosphere is called the ionosphere because of the ions which contain charged particles and have lost their electrons.

As per the researchers, the Starship rocket's speed and power were faster than the speed of sound which created shock waves.&nbsp;

These shock waves took the form of cone-like acoustic waves which travelled across the ionosphere.&nbsp;

However, these waves - which generally move southward during rocket launches - travelled in the northern direction, which is unusual.

<h2>How was the hole created in the atmosphere?</h2>

As reported by Futurism, the study's lead author and atmospheric physicist at Russia’s Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics Yury Yasyukevich said that sound waves were produced by the explosions which neutralised nearby charged atoms and led to the "disappearance" of the electrons.

The hole was created because of chemical processes triggered by interactions between the fuel of the rocket and the ionised particles in the atmosphere. However, the disruption was short-lived.&nbsp;

It took 30 to 40 minutes for the hole to heal itself, as per the researchers.&nbsp;

Although the event was significant because of the scale of the explosion, the creation of such ionospheric holes is not unusual.

Watch: Mesmerising explosion of meteor over Earth gets captured by NASA astronaut

The Earth started rotating at a dramatically slow speed twice in the last hundreds of millions of years and one of those times was when the biggest mass extinction took place, as per the latest study.

The other time it slowed was when rapid expansion of life took place on the planet, which was called the Cambrian explosion, said the Chinese scientists-led team.&nbsp;

Also Read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/earths-mantle-is-hosting-strange-black-holes-with-mysterious-waves-heres-what-they-are-753231">Earth's mantle is hosting strange 'black holes' with mysterious waves. Here's what they are</a>

Even though the world appears to rotate at a constant speed, the exact timing can change and does not remain precisely 24 hours.&nbsp;

<h2>Why did the Earth's rotation slow down?</h2>

The changes in gravity happen because of variations in the distance between the Earth and the moon and are known to cause ocean tides, however, the friction between the surface of the Earth and the tides also leads to a slight deceleration in its rotation.&nbsp;

At the same time, the momentum is transferred by the Earth to the moon, because of which it gradually moves outward.

As per the study, the rotation of the Earth has decelerated because of this phenomenon in the past.

After analysing for two years, the team, headed by Ma Chao from the Institute of Sedimentary Geology at Chengdu University of Technology, concluded that there was an increase of 20,000 km&nbsp;between Earth and the moon between 700 million and 200 million years ago, because of which the length of the day increased by around 2.2 hours.

“Specifically, there are two intervals with pronounced Earth rotation deceleration: between 650 and 500 million years ago (Mya), and between 350 and 280 Mya, separated by a period of stalled deceleration from 500 to 350 Mya,” wrote the team&nbsp;in a paper which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The first shift took place during the Cambrian explosion, when complex life forms diversified rapidly. The second deceleration happened around 250 million years ago and coincided with the “Great Dying”, which is also called the Permian-Triassic extinction event during which 90 per cent of life on Earth was wiped out.

According to the research, the volcanic activity along with changes in the climate, sea levels and salt levels led to the extinction.&nbsp;

Ma said that changes in sea conditions were linked to the shift in the rotation of the Earth. “The two major ‘fast-slow’ deceleration periods may have provided the necessary conditions for the early evolution of marine ecosystems," he said while speaking to Science and Technology Daily.
