‘Let them eat concrete’: Massive new US embassy complex in Lebanon draws ire of netizens

The United States plans to open an embassy in the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, the State Department said on Friday, in Washington's latest move to boost its diplomatic presence in the Pacific to counter China's growing influence.

"Consistent with the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy, a permanent diplomatic presence in Vanuatu would allow the U.S. Government to deepen relationships with Ni-Vanuatu officials and society," the department said in a statement.

"Establishing U.S. Embassy Port Vila would facilitate areas of potential bilateral cooperation and development assistance, including efforts to tackle the climate crisis," it said.

The United States has diplomatic relations with Vanuatu, which has a population of 319,000 spread across 80 islands, but is currently represented by diplomats based in New Guinea.

The United States States reopened its embassy in the Solomon Islands this year after a 30-year absence and the latest State Department announcement follows a visit this month to the region, including Vanuatu, by U.S. Indo-Pacific coordinator Kurt Campbell.

Other U.S. embassies are planned in the Pacific island nations of Kiribati and Tonga.

Despite the diplomatic push, the Solomon Islands announced this month it had awarded a multi-million-dollar contract to a Chinese state company to upgrade an international port in Honiara.

The United States and its regional allies have held concerns that China has ambitions to build a naval base in the region since the Solomon Islands struck a security pact with Beijing last year.

Washington has also been working to renew agreements with the Marshall Islands, Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) under which it retains responsibility for the islands' defense and gains exclusive access to huge swaths of the Pacific.

The Biden administration is seeking more than $7 billion over the next two decades for economic assistance to the three countries, the State Department said last week, funds seen as key to insulating them from growing Chinese influence.

US to open Vanuatu embassy in latest move to counter China in Pacific

After escaping police custody in the Indian state of Punjab on 18 March, Khalistani separatist Amritpal Singh has now taken cover in the neighbouring country of Nepal and has hidden himself from the authorities, as per reports by The Kathmandu Post.&nbsp;

As per the latest reports by the media outlet, the Indian mission in Kathmandu has reached out to Nepal government urging it to not let fugitive Amritpal Singh slip into any other third country as he could be vying to evade arrest.&nbsp;

“The esteemed ministry is requested to inform the Department of Immigration not to permit Amritpal Singh to travel through Nepal for any third country and arrest him if he attempts to escape from Nepal using Indian Passport or any other fake passport under intimation to this mission.”

This transpired on the same day when a picture of Amritpal and his friend Papalpreet Singh purportedly appeared on social media. The picture has gone viral alongside those that the Indian authorities earlier released of the fugitive in order to seek help in nabbing him. In the viral picture, the&nbsp;individuals are wearing sweatshirts with Amritpal&nbsp;wearing a maroon turban and holding a beverage can.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Azerbaijan president further shared with WION his suspicions over what happened after the attack. "The terrorist was interviewed by Iranian media which demonstrates that the terrorist was sent from the Iranian establishment," he told WION.&nbsp;

And another strange thing that happened after two days, the president said was that "he (the suspected attacker) was declared as a mentally unstable person. How can they tell this so quickly? It is an attempt to protect him."

He urged the Iranian government to conduct "a transparent investigation."

"We should be informed and the terrorist should be punished. But most importantly, the people who sent the terrorist, from the establishment, who did this brutal act should be brought to justice, then only we can have normal relations,"&nbsp;Aliyev said.

After the attack, the Azerbaijan&nbsp;government had said that a security official was killed when a gunman opened fire at embassy grounds. Local police had claimed to have arrested a suspect and launched an investigation into the incident.

“The governments of Iran and Azerbaijan will not allow bilateral relations to be affected by the suggestions of those who wish ill on the two nations,” Raisi was quoted as saying on his official website.

The diplomatic relations between Russia and Estonia were downgraded on Monday after the latter's ambassador was ordered to leave Russia, as the country was accused of "total Russophobia".

As the Estonian ambassador was expelled, the Russian foreign ministry announced on Monday that the charge d’affaires will head the diplomatic mission of the country.&nbsp;

"The ambassador of the Estonian Republic will have to leave the Russian Federation on February 7," the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that the diplomatic representation of Estonia will also be downgraded from now.&nbsp;

“In recent years, the Estonian leadership has purposefully destroyed the entire range of relations with Russia. Total Russophobia, the cultivation of hostility towards our country have been elevated by Tallinn to the rank of state policy,” read the statement issued by the Russian foreign ministry on Monday.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, the Estonian foreign ministry asked Russia to cut down the number of staff present in the embassy to eight diplomats and 15 technical, service and administrative staff members to “reach parity in embassy staff” by February 1.

Two unidentified gunmen had attacked Charge d’Affaires Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani while he was strolling in the compound of the Pakistan embassy. His guard suffered critical injuries in the attack.

The injured guard was lifted by the helicopter and is now receiving treatment in the hospital. Pakistan had summoned Afghanistan’s Charge d’Affaires on Friday and had conveyed to him its concern over the attack on the embassy.

A&nbsp;security guard at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid received&nbsp;minor injuries, after reading a letter bomb on Wednesday that was addressed to the Ukrainian ambassador. This incident prompted Kyiv to increase security at its embassies.&nbsp;

According to Mercedes Gonzalez, a representative of the central government in Madrid, the letter that had been sent via ordinary mail detonated as the guard opened it on the embassy grounds. "Fortunately it was not serious, the person has a small injury to his right hand. The letter was addressed to the ambassador," she stated in an interview with Telemadrid TV.

According to a police source, the individual "went himself to a hospital" for treatment after suffering "light" injuries. The explosion at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid was reported to Spain's National Police force at around 1:00 pm (1200 GMT), the source continued.&nbsp;

The source claimed without going into further detail that police had started an inquiry "which includes the participation of forensic police." Police established a security perimeter around the embassy, which is situated in a quiet neighbourhood in northern Madrid.

A resident of the area in front of the embassy who wished to remain unnamed told AFP that after going outside to walk his dogs, police were now stopping him from going back inside. He claimed, "I heard it, I thought it was a gunshot, it was not too loud."&nbsp;

&nbsp;China is seeking to establish military relationships in the Pacific, a senior US&nbsp;administration official said on Saturday, as Washington promised more diplomatic and security resources for the region, including an embassy in the Solomon Islands.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken will announce plans for the embassy in the Solomon Islands, which switched its diplomatic allegiance to China from Taiwan in 2019, while on a visit to Fiji where he will host a virtual summit with 18 Pacific leaders, a state department official said.

Blinken flew to Fiji after a meeting in Melbourne of the United States, Japan, India and Australia, at which the so-called Quad pledged to deepen cooperation to ensure an Indo-Pacific region free from "coercion," a thinly veiled swipe at China`s economic and military expansion.

Last November, violent protests erupted in the Solomon Islands capital of Honiara after Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare refused to speak with protesters who had travelled from Malaita province, which had opposed the diplomatic switch to Beijing.

Around 200 police and soldiers from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea arrived in Honiara within days of the riots, at Sogavare`s request.

Under an action plan for the next 12-24 months, the document said Washington would "meaningfully expand" its diplomatic presence in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands and prioritise key negotiations with Pacific island states that cover access for the U.S. military and which have appeared to stall in the past year.

A former employee at Australia’s embassy in Bangkok was indicted over claims that placed multiple spy cameras were in women’s bathrooms at the building, local media reported.

The Royal Thai Police had last month arrested Bank Thamsongsana, an Australian and Thai dual national, who worked as an IT worker at the mission.

He was sacked on January 6, a day after he was arrested. Thamsongsana can face up to10 years in prison if found guilty of sexual and public nuisance offences, The Sunday Morning Herald newspaper reported.

According to reports, a probe had begun last year by the embassy and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra after women employees found a tiny memory card in the bathrooms on the ground floor building.

Following the discovery, over 60 women lodged complaints with Royal Thai Police over concerns that they may have been recorded.

Staff were told the card was empty and no cameras were found installed, but an investigation of other devices turned up vision taken inside one of the bathrooms.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the cameras set up in the bathrooms were about the size of two 20-cent pieces, with the capacity to record for about two hours but not to transmit.

The cameras used were not permanently installed, staff have been told, but it’s unclear for how long and with what frequency they were being placed near women’s toilets and showers.

Meanwhile, the incident is being viewed as a major security lapse.

“As this is an ongoing legal matter, the department is unable to comment further. The welfare and privacy of all staff remains a priority for the department and we continue to provide appropriate support,” a spokesperson for Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was quoted as saying.

Former staff at Australia’s Thailand embassy held for installing spy cameras at women’s bathrooms

Canada's foreign ministry on Sunday said that the country would temporarily withdraw non-essential Canadian employees and remaining dependents from its embassy in Ukraine. The decision has been taken amid the international standoff over Russian troops massed on Russia-Ukraine border.

"As we continue to closely monitor the situation, our highest priority remains the safety and security of Canadians. Our officials stand ready to provide consular assistance to Canadian citizens, as required," the ministry said in a statement.

The embassy in Kyiv remains open, it said.

Canada said last week it will reinforce the team at the Canadian Embassy with experts in security, conflict management, democratic reform and consular services.

"Together, they will increase our diplomatic capacity and allow us to continue to assess and respond to the evolving situation in support of Ukraine," it said.

Russia currently has more than 100,000 of its soldiers and military equipment at its border with Ukraine. German security services believe that a man found dead in a street outside the Russian Embassy in Berlin last month was an undercover agent of Russia's FSB intelligence service, Der Spiegel reported.

The body was found on the morning of October 19. As per reports, he fell from the upper floor of the Russian embassy building. However, it is still unclear why he fell. The cause of death also remains unclear.

The magazine report further states that the officers called an ambulance.

In a statement to the Interfax news agency, the embassy confirmed that a Russian diplomat had died but said it was "not commenting on this tragic event for ethical reasons".

Abdul Salam Hanafi, a member of the Islamist group's political office in Doha, Qatar, "held a phone conversation with Wu Jianghao, Deputy Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China," spokesman Suhail Shaheen tweeted.

Much of the world is in wait-and-watch mode with respect to engagement with Taliban. But China has already said that it was ready to deepen "friendly and cooperative" relations with the Taliban following their takeover.

The Chinese embassy in Kabul remains operational, although Beijing began evacuating Chinese citizens from the country months ago as security deteriorated.

But Beijing has not yet recognised the Taliban as the de facto government, and is wary of the militant group providing support to Muslim-minority Uyghur separatists looking to infiltrate its sensitive border region of Xinjiang.

For Beijing, a stable and cooperative administration in Kabul would pave the way for an expansion of its overseas infrastructure drive, analysts say.

The Taliban, meanwhile, may consider China a crucial source of investment and economic support.

Chinese companies have also been eyeing Afghanistan's vast copper and lithium mines, but experts say the perilous security situation means any immediate commodities rush by investors is unlikely.

"We hope the Taliban will establish an open and inclusive political structure, pursue moderate and stable domestic and foreign policy and make a clean break with all terrorist groups," said foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin. Much of the world is in wait-and-watch mode with respect to engagement with Taliban. But China has already said that it was ready to deepen "friendly and cooperative" relations with the Taliban following their takeover. The Chinese embassy in Kabul remains operational, although Beijing began evacuating Chinese citizens from the country months ago as security deteriorated. But Beijing has not yet recognised the Taliban as the de facto government, and is wary of the militant group providing support to Muslim-minority Uyghur separatists looking to infiltrate its sensitive border region of Xinjiang. For Beijing, a stable and cooperative administration in Kabul would pave the way for an expansion of its overseas infrastructure drive, analysts say. The Taliban, meanwhile, may consider China a crucial source of investment and economic support. Chinese companies have also been eyeing Afghanistan's vast copper and lithium mines, but experts say the perilous security situation means any immediate commodities rush by investors is unlikely.
