Her statement immediately riled up the BJP brass in Karnataka which took offence to Gandhi's usage of the word 'sovereignity'. Calling the statement 'divisive', BJP attached images of a tweet from Congress's official Twitter handle that reads, "CPP chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas." "The meaning of what Congress is saying is that the Congress believes that Karnataka is separate from India. The statement is divisive in nature and it is aimed at dividing the citizens and creating rift between two people of different states. Karnataka is not different from India. This is a shocking statement leading to igniting divisive sentiments," read the official complaint. "Definition of sovereignty is an independent nation. India is a sovereign country and Karnataka is a proud part of it," it added. According to the 101-page financial disclosure report, made public on Friday, the 76-year-old Republican made $5million from speaking engagements, and between $100,001 and $1 million in earnings from CIC Digital, the company behind the sale of Trump-branded non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Apart from that, the documents show that his business empire generated at least $282 million over 2021 and most of 2022, and is currently valued at a minimum of $1.2 billion.

However, the revenue figures are not exact because many of Trump's holdings are in illiquid real estate assets and because federal disclosures require reporting only in broad ranges, with the top one over $50 million, Bloomberg reported.

According to the disclosure, Trump Media &amp; Technology Group Corp., the company behind the Trump’s preferred social media platform Truth Social, is valued between $5 million and $25 million.

He has reported earning less than $201 in income from the group in&nbsp;which he is the chairman of the board of directors.

The value is significantly lower than the initial $9 billion valuation for the company when it announced a merger in October 2021 with a Digital World Acquisition Company.

Trump NFTs a hit

Trump has made between $100,001 and $1 million in income from NFTs, according to his 2022 financial disclosure form.

The NFTs, some of which shows him in a space suit wearing sunglasses while another depicted him as a superhero shooting lasers from his eyes—were priced at $99.

Despite inviting ridicule, around 45,000 series of NFTs were sold out in less than a day, according to the website that listed them.

Other sources of revenues

Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club, which has served as a destination spot for his supporters and allies, raked in over $5 million over the last 15 months, according to the report. The club brought in more than $24 million in the final year of his presidency,.

The Trump Hotel at the Old Post Office in Washington, D.C., which also served as a popular spot for Trump's allies during his presidency, also brought in more than $5 million last year in the months prior to its sale in May, per the filing.

Trump sees new income from deal with a Saudi-based firm

According to New York Times newspaper, the financial disclosure showed the first payment to Trump for a new deal backed by a Saudi Arabia-based real estate investment firm to build a new golf and hotel complex in Oman. The payments so far are listed as being worth just over $5 million.

The former president filed the disclosure – which is required to be submitted by candidates within 30 days of announcing their candidacy – only after seeking and securing two 45-day extensions.&nbsp;

Trump’s legal team sought an additional 30-day extension that was rejected by the FEC’s acting general counsel Lisa Stevenson, according to CNN.&nbsp;

US ex-president Donald Trump’s financial disclosures: Millions earned in NFTs, speaking events

The Election Commission, on Friday (March 17) said Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav was elected as the third vice president of Nepal. The senior leader of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) will supposedly further boost the coalition government headed by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.&nbsp;

The 52-year-old secured 30,328 votes (58.02 per cent) and comfortably defeated Ashta Laxmi Shakya of CPN-UML who received 16,328 (31.23 per cent) to become the Himalayan nation’s third VP. According to the EC, out of the 332 federal lawmakers, 311 cast their votes in the vice presidential voting on Friday.&nbsp;

Similarly, out of the 550 provincial assembly members eligible to vote, some 518 voted, as per the EC. Yadav had the support of the Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Centre, CPN-Unified Socialist, and others while the Rastriya Prajatantra Party did not participate in the election.&nbsp;

This voting held on Friday was Nepal’s third since the country adopted the federal democratic republic system in 2008. Therefore, Parmananda Jha became the first VP of the Himalayan nation followed by Nanda Bahadur Pun from the UCPN (Maoist) who became the second VP in 2015. Incidentally, Yadav also began his parliamentary career in the first Constituent Assembly&nbsp;15 years ago.&nbsp;

The tenure of the vice-president is five years. The senior leader from the country’s Madhes region will replace incumbent Nanda Bahadur Pun after his tenure is completed. Notably, there were two candidates from the JSP, Pramila Yadav and Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav. However, Pramila Yadav withdrew her candidacy and later supported Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav of her party in the election.

Supreme Court of India on Thursday (March 2) said that appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and election commissioners will now be done by President of India on the advise of a committee comprising of the prime minister, leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India. Lok Sabha is the lower house of Parliament of India and its members are elected directly by the people.&nbsp;

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice KM Joseph, in a unanimous verdict, held that this norm will continue to hold good till a law on the issue is made by Parliament.

The apex court said if the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha is not there, then leader of the single largest opposition party will be in the committee to decide names of the Chief Election Commissioner and elections commissioners for appointment.

The bench delivered its verdict on a batch of pleas seeking a collegium-like system for the appointment of election commissioners and the Chief Election Commissioner.

The bench, also comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy and CT Ravikumar, stressed on purity in the election process and said democracy is intrinsically linked to the will of the people.

Justice Rastogi, who concurred with the lead judgement authored by Justice Joseph, delivered a separate verdict with his reasoning.

The apex court said that election in a democracy should undoubtedly be fair and the buck stops with the Election Commission to ensure that its purity is maintained.

It said, in a democracy, the purity of election must be maintained or else it would lead to disastrous consequences.

The Supreme Court bench said that Election Commission must act within constitutional framework and within the law.&nbsp;

An Election Commission, which does not ensure free and fair role in the process, guarantees breakdown of rule of law, which is the bedrock of the democracy, it added.

The bench said that democracy is fragile and would collapse if "lip service" is paid to rule of law.

Indian Supreme Court delivers major verdict related to Election Commission

In a huge blow to former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has ruled that Eknath Shinde faction would be now known as the party 'Shiv Sena'.&nbsp;The Election Commission on Friday recognised the Eknath Shinde-led faction as the real Shiv Sena and ordered allocation of the 'bow and arrow' poll symbol to it.&nbsp;In a 78-page order on the protracted battle for control of the organisation, the Commission allowed the Uddhav Thackeray faction to keep the "flaming torch" poll symbol allocated to it till the completion of the assembly bypolls in the state. 
 
The Commission said MLAs backing Eknath Shinde got nearly 76 per cent of votes polled in favour of the 55 winning Shiv Sena candidates in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly polls. 
The Uddhav Thackeray faction's MLAs got 23.5 per cent of votes polled in favour of the winning Shiv Sena candidates, the three-member Commission said in a unanimous order, reports PTI. 
 
Shinde, the current chief minister of western Indian state of Maharashtra, had led a rebellion within the erstwhile Shiv Sena&nbsp;headed by Uddhav Thackeray, the former chief minister of Maharashtra.&nbsp;

Sheetal Mhatre, the spokesperson of the Shinde faction, took to Twitter to share her happiness.

Big blow to Uddhav Thackeray: Eknath Shinde faction is real 'Shiv Sena', rules election commission

Former judge and Awami League leader, Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu, is poised to become the next president of Bangladesh, as his party which secured a majority in the parliament has chosen him as their candidate for the upcoming presidential election. The announcement was made by the party’s General Secretary, Obaidul Quader, on Sunday (February 12), as per local media reports.&nbsp;

The 74-year-old may replace incumbent President Mohammad Abdul Hamid, whose tenure ends on April 24,&nbsp; this year. According to Article 123 of the country’s constitution, the presidential election must be held 90 to 60 days before the expiry of the incumbent’s five-year term.

Notably, the Awami League accounts for 305 seats in the 350-member House. “The Election Commission (EC) has received his (Chuppu’s) nomination paper submitted by Bangladesh Awami League,” said a spokesperson of the independent statutory body, reported PTI. Chuppu who is a former commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, retired district and sessions judge, and freedom fighter, is to run for president, said Quader, as per the Dhaka Tribune.&nbsp;

The party’s general secretary also told reporters that the Awami League Parliamentary Party (ALPP) had asked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to nominate the presidential candidate and she chose Chuppu. After his retirement as district and sessions judge,&nbsp;the 74-year-old served as one of the commissioners of the independent Anti-Corruption Commission and later went on to join politics and become a member of the Awami League Advisory Council in 2020, as per media reports.&nbsp;

While PTI officials have claimed that there is no legal basis for removing Imran from his position, the Commission has cited a 2018 judgement by a three-member Supreme Court bench. It said that a person disqualified “under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution could not head a political party”.

The Constitution dictates that all gifts of value received by office holders need to be deposited in the Toshakhana for valuation. All gifts need to be reported and the full valuation will have to disclosed.

Need a strong Chief Election Commissioner “with a character” who “doesn’t allow himself to be bulldozed”, remarked the Supreme Court of India&nbsp;while hearing petitions seeking reforms of the country’s poll body.&nbsp;India’s Election Commission consists of a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two Election Commissioners.

The appointment of the election commissioners is followed as per the procedure established by the Indian Constitution.

According to Article 324(2) of the Constitution, the president appoints CEC and ECs after receiving advice from the Council of Ministers, which also includes the prime minister.

The article states that CEC and ECs would be appointed as per the said procedure until the parliament enacts a law fixing the criteria for selection, conditions of service and tenure. However, no such law has been enacted for the purpose.

The petition seeks a fair and transparent procedure for the appointment of CEC and ECs.

Reacting to the plea, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice K M Joseph on Tuesday said that there needs to be a system in place so that the "best man" is selected as the CEC, and added that the government pays only "lip service" to the independence of Election Commissioners.

Justice K M Joseph criticised the Union government over the short tenure of CECs, saying, "Their (CECs) tenure is highly truncated and known from the very beginning… In this way, this so-called independence that you pay lip-service to, I am sorry to say, is completely destroyed by getting this kind of a term.”&nbsp;

Justice Joseph said it has been 72 years since the Constitution was adopted but still there is no law on the appointment of election commissioners, despite being envisaged in the Constitution.

The court pointed out that the "situation on the ground is alarming" and that it wants a CEC like late T N Seshan, who is known for bringing key electoral reforms as the poll panel chief from 1990 to 1996.

“There have been numerous CECs and T N Seshan happens once in a while. We do not want anyone to bulldoze him. Enormous power has been vested on the fragile shoulder of three men (CEC and two election commissioners). We have to find the best man for the post of CEC," the court said.

The government's counsel, Attorney General for India R Venkataramani, argued that the Centre was in favour of appointing the “best man”, but raised doubts on how it can be done.

"There is no vacuum in the Constitution. Election commissioners are presently appointed by the president on the aid and advice of the council of ministers," he said.

Uttar Pradesh will go to the polls in 7 phases from Feb 10 to March 7. Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa will vote on February 14 and Manipur will vote on Feb 27 and March 3.

The counting of votes shall begin on March 10.

In light of India reporting a massive spike in Covid cases, the Election Commission has prohibited rallies, processions or any kind of roadshows till January 15.

“No physical rally of political parties or probably candidates or any other group related to elections shall be allowed till January 15. Roadshows, cycle or bike rallies have also been prohibited. The ECI would subsequently review the situation and issue further instructions accordingly,” Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sushil Chandra said during a press briefing in Delhi.

Chandra said that senior citizens above 80 years of age, persons with disabilities and COVID-19 patients can vote by postal ballot.

The ECI has also mandated that at least one polling station be managed exclusively by women in every Assembly constituency.

“All polling booths will have less than 1,000 voters for smooth polling. One booth will be in each constituency to be totally manned by women staff and security members,” he said while adding, “Our officers have identified much more than that. There're 690 Assembly seats but we are setting up 1620 such polling booths.”

The election commissioner said that Electronic Voting Machines and VVPATs will be utilized in all of the polling stations.

“The Election Commission has already made arrangements to ensure an adequate number of EVMs and VVPATs for the smooth conduct of elections,” Chandra said.

The political parties have also been asked to upload on their website detailed information regarding individuals with pending criminal cases selected as poll candidates.

“They will also have to give a reason to select the candidate,” Chandra said.

The top poll officer also announced that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into effect immediately.

“The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements for ensuring the effective implementation of the MCC guidelines. Any violation of these guidelines will be strictly dealt with,” he warned.

He asked the voters to report any electoral malpractice in its app cVIGIL.

“Our cVIGIL application should be used by voters to report any incident of violation of the Model Code of Conduct, distribution of money &amp; freebies. Within 100 minutes of complaint, ECI officials will reach the place of the offence,” Chandra said.

The EC said that it has put in place new protocols in light of new Covid cases.

“For the past two years, the impact of COVID-19 has made the conduct of elections difficult. It is our duty to see how to conduct elections safely. The EC has put in place new protocols,” Chandra said.

“As Covid cases soared in view of Omicron variant, ECI held meetings with Union Health Secretary and Home Secretary, experts, and health secretaries of States. After taking these views and analysing the ground situation, the ECI decided to announce polls with safety norms in place,” he added.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) will launch the e-EPIC (Electronic Electoral Photo Identity Card) today, which is the National Voter's Day.&nbsp;

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will launch the e-EPIC programme and distribute digital voter ID cards to five new voters.

e-EPIC is a non-editable secure portable document format (PDF) version of the EPIC and will have a secured QR code with image and demographics like serial number, part number, etc.&nbsp;

E-EPIC can be downloaded on a mobile or a computer and can be digitally stored. This is in addition to physical IDs being issued for fresh registration.

In the first phase between 25 January and 31 January, only new voters who have applied for their voter cards and have registered their mobile numbers with the Election Commission will be able to download their digital voter ID cards.

"The second phase will start on February 1. It will be open for the general voters. All those who have given their mobile numbers (linked one) they can also download their e-EPIC", said ECI official.

Voters who do not have their phone numbers linked will have to get it done to avail of the download feature.

The Supreme Court on Monday granted four weeks time to the Election Commission of India to file its reply on a batch of petitions seeking directions to publish details of voter turnout and final vote count on its website once general and assembly election results are declared.

The apex court had, on December 9, 2019, sought a response from the poll panel.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for ADR, told the court that RTI has shown that VVPAT slips have been destroyed within four months even though it was to be kept for one year according to the Representation of Peoples Act.

There is a constitutional provision that the President would nominate one NA member at the recommendation of the government.

The Election Commission has also directed the election officers to make proper arrangements for the counting of votes and declaration of election results.

Sri Lanka's election commission said it would censor a state-owned TV station in an unprecedented move after accusing the network of bias against the former president's brother, who is standing in upcoming polls.

The surprise move came after the Independent Television Network (ITN) aired a programme alleging loyalists to the previous regime had thwarted a corruption probe into strongman ex-president Mahinda Rajapakse's family.&nbsp;

The broadcast had harmed opposition frontrunner Gotabhaya Rajapakse -- brother of the former leader -- according to the election commission.

The channel will be banned from showing political content from Monday without the commission's approval, chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said.

"ITN cannot broadcast any political content without clearing with the Election Commission until the conclusion of the election on November 16," said a letter sent from Deshapriya to the network late Saturday and seen by AFP.

The letter also said that any live events filmed by the station must be shown to the commission for approval before being transmitted.

It is the first time that a Sri Lankan election chief has censored a TV station.

The commission said it had received many complaints about other channels campaigning for Rajapakse without declaring their bias, but could not take action as these were all private networks.

Gotabhaya Rajapakse was defence secretary for a decade until his brother Mahinda was voted out in 2015.

The opposition candidate is the current favourite, even though his bid is widely seen as a front to get Mahinda -- barred from contesting the election because of a two-term limit -- back into power.

Mahinda's rule was marked by the end of a bloody civil war against ethnic Tamil rebels, and an international outcry over alleged human rights violations by Sri Lankan troops.

The election has attracted a record 35 candidates, with nearly 16 million people eligible to vote.

"The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on behalf of its members has agreed to observe the voluntary code of ethics during all future elections including the ongoing general elections to the Haryana and Maharashtra Legislative Assemblies and various bye-elections being held simultaneously," an official statement said.

"This came into immediate effect from the day it was presented to the Commission on March 20. During the election period, social media platforms took action on 909 violative cases, reported by the EC," the statement added.

Under it, social media platforms have created a high priority dedicated grievance redressal channel for taking prompt action on the cases reported by the electoral body. The social media platforms and the Commission have developed a notification mechanism by which poll panel can notify the platforms for potential violations of electoral laws, said the statement.

The platforms will ensure that all political advertisements on their platforms are pre-certified from the media certification and monitoring committees of the EC. Besides, they will voluntarily undertake information, education and communication campaigns to build awareness related to electoral laws and other related instructions, the statement said.

The social media platforms and the EC have developed a notification mechanism and by this, the electoral body can notify the relevant platforms of potential violations of Section 126 of the R.P. Act, 1951, and other electoral laws.

Platforms will ensure that all political advertisements are pre-certified from the media certification and monitoring committees as per the directions of the Supreme Court. Participating platforms are committed to facilitate transparency in paid political advertisements, including utilizing their pre-existing labels/disclosure technology for such advertisements.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora, who announced the poll schedule for the two states at a press conference here, said that that the Commission has been asking political parties to use only environment-friendly material for campaign purposes since long.

"Considering the long-term deleterious impact of materials like plastics, polythene etc. on the life-giving and life-sustaining environment, the Commission, has directed that all political parties, contesting candidates and their authorized agents, etc., shall desist from utilizing environmentally hazardous materials like plastics, polythene, etc. for the preparation and usage election-related publicity materials during the ensuing elections to the legislative assemblies of Haryana and Maharashtra," he said.

He said the district election officers and returning officers have been directed to emphasise the importance of environment protection and preservation during the meetings with the political parties and contesting candidates and "ensure that instructions of the Commission with regard to the usage of non-eco-friendly materials like plastics, polythene etc during electioneering shall be adhered to by all concerned".

"The CEOs shall impress upon the importance of using eco-friendly and bio-degradable materials for campaign material to various political parties in states and issue necessary instructions in this regard," he said.

Arora said the poll panel had on February 26 this year again instructed that all political parties should take measures to not use single-use plastic as campaign materials (for posters, banners) during elections.

The Commission, he said, has issued advisories on several occasions urging political parties and candidates to avoid single-use plastic and non-biodegradable material in their election campaign activities.

Both Haryana and Maharashtra will go for a single-phase assembly poll on October 21. The government has been pushing for eliminating the use of single-use plastic. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said the Supreme Court, the Election Commission of India, the CBI and other such institutions are expected to function independently within the framework of the Constitution.

Serving the federal structures like the Supreme Court, the Election Commission of India, the Controller and Auditor General of India, the CBI, Vigilance Commission, the Information Commission and various other commissions constituted by the government from time to time are expected to function independently within the framework of the Constitution. We have to ensure that they do so," he added.

They said a delimitation commission is set up to fix limits or boundaries of constituencies and the process regarding delimitation will start after receiving formal communication from the Ministry.

The Act, which was notified by the government on August 9, provides for the creation of two union territories - Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature and Ladakh, without it.

The Act provides that the poll panel will determine the number of seats to be reserved for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in the Legislative Assembly with regard to the relevant provisions of the Constitution.

It says that constituencies in which seats are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes shall, as far as practicable, be located in areas where the proportion of their population to the total population is the largest.

The Act provides that the poll panel will publish its proposals for the delimitation of constituencies together with the dissenting proposals, if any, in the Official Gazette together with a notice inviting objections and suggestions concerning the proposals and specifying a date by which the proposals will be further considered by it.

It will consider all objections and suggestions and determine the delimitation of constituencies.

Upon published in the Official Gazette, the orders shall have the full force of law and shall not be called in question in any court.&nbsp;
