Important hints about how to develop drought-resistant crops in a world plagued by climate change can be found in a common plant. In a report published on August 5 in the journal Science Advances, Yale scientists explain how Portulaca oleracea, commonly known as purslane, integrates two different metabolic pathways to produce a novel type of photosynthesis that enables the weed to withstand drought while remaining highly productive.

The fact that the weed purslane has both of these evolutionary adaptations makes it special since it can be extremely productive and drought tolerant, which is an unusual combination for a plant. The majority of scientists thought that C4 and CAM functioned separately inside purslane leaves.

The Yale team, however, was led by co-corresponding authors and postdoctoral researchers Jose Moreno-Villena and Haoran Zhou. They carried out a geographical investigation of gene expression within the leaves of purslane and discovered that C4 and CAM activity is completely integrated. They function in the same cells, with the C4 pathway processing the byproducts of CAM processes. In times of drought, this strategy offers a C4 plant unusually high levels of protection.

Additionally, the scientists developed metabolic flow models that foretold the creation of an integrated C4+CAM system that matched their actual findings. By the end of the decade, a national hosepipe ban and mandatory water measuring should be adopted throughout the United Kingdom, a message advisers have provided to the government as they prepare for a drought that threatens to cause significant disruption. In future, people will have to stand in lines to buy emergency bottled water from the back of lorries. The National Infrastructure Committee (NIC) forewarned the government four years ago that significant new investments in the country’s water supply infrastructure would be necessary by the 2030s. However, water companies made several changes, but every day, around 3 billion litres of water are still lost, The Guardian reported.

According to the chair of the committee, Sir John Armitt, in conversation with the Observer, plugging these leaks will cost somewhere around £20 billion. He continued by saying that if investments are not made now, it will cost more than twice as much to deliver bottled water to UK homes by a lorry when droughts hit the country more frequently.

Water measuring is considered the best way to reduce water use in the UK which has the highest water consumption in Europe. However, roughly around half of the households in England and Wales are expected to have water meters installed, and it was found that users with metered connections use 33 litres a day less than the 141 litres per day national average.

The Rivers Trust, one of the key organisations at the emergency National Drought Group meeting the government called last week as dry conditions expanded throughout England, supported the NIC’s appeal. Critics claim that despite numerous warnings, the government appears to have done nothing.

Disasters are becoming more frequent and severe. Steffi Lemke, minister of environment said these horrifying facts showed ‘enormous damage and expenses’ of the climate crisis. Similarly, Robert Habeck, Economy Minister said that in order to keep the impact of the climate crisis at a reasonable level, the country needs to coexist with rapid global action.

Climate crisis cost Germany at least 80 billion euros since 2018: Report

A severe, protracted drought has gripped California and the west coast of the United States for many years. Scientists say extreme occurrences are becoming more frequent, as a result of the global warming brought on by human activities, notably the unrestricted use of fossil fuels. Authorities in Los Angeles have implemented water restrictions such as limiting lawn irrigation to no more than eight minutes, twice weekly, as a result of reservoirs and rivers reaching historic lows. Repeat offenders are fined $200 to $600. According to the water department, progress is being made. Comparing June to the same month last year, AFP reported.

Every day, Damon Ayala patrols the streets of Los Angeles, which is currently experiencing a severe drought. Being a member of the Department of Water and Power team for the city, which investigates the hundreds of neighbourhood complaints about water waste that are made each week.

Officials observed a decrease in the demand for residential water. But as the drought worsens, more substantial alterations to the city’s landscape might be required.

Los Angeles is well-known for its now palm trees, and is also known for its lush, green lawns that are kept up with automatic sprinklers. More and more people have started using desert-adapted plants in place of their thirsty lawns.

Italy is currently facing its worst drought in almost 70 years and the government has decided to declare a state of emergency in a number of areas around the river Po. The areas generally account for almost 30 per cent of Italy’s total agricultural production but the draught has caused massive devastation this year. Thanks to the announcement, the local authorities will find it easier to take steps in order to improve the situation like water rationing for both houses and businesses.

Italy declares state of emergency in five northern regions amid ongoing drought

As a result of the ongoing heatwave that continues to swelter Europe, the water levels of Rome's historic river the Tiber have fallen so low that it is now possible to see the remains of an ancient Roman bridge built by the Roman Emperor Nero. In the centre of Rome, near Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican, debris from the old bridge called Pons Neronianus or Bridge of Nero, which is usually hidden by the river, can now be seen beneath the Vittorio Emmanuele II bridge. The river Tiber's water levels have dropped by a metre compared to this time last year. Recently Rome's mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, also emphasised that even though there are currently no plans for water rationing, city residents must make sure not to waste water.

The past few weeks have seen scorching temperatures in several parts of Western Europe, adding to concerns about climate change.

Italian lakes in the north are at record lows or very close to them, and natural reservoir levels in the centre of the country are declining. While the Aniene river's flow rate has decreased by half, the Tiber river is at multi-year lows.
According to a farm lobby, northern Italian regions could lose up to half of their agricultural output owing to drought as lakes and rivers begin to drop dangerously low, endangering irrigation, and raising concerns among the public.

The capital of Italy has been experiencing highs of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), and as a result, people are lining up at the numerous fountains and drinking fountains to cool off.

Desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD) act as one of the drivers of migration, India said on Saturday at the 15th international conference of the UNCCD which is underway at Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in West Africa.

Making a statement on behalf of India, Joint Secretary, Environment, Jigmet Takpa asserted that the youth are most likely to face migration and engaging them is vital to restoration efforts for resilient and sustainable food systems.

India, which has handed over the presidency of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP 15 to Cote d’Ivoire after presiding over it for two years, called for prioritising integrated land-use planning together with enhancing green and blue infrastructure for sustainable development.

Apart from desertification, land degradation and drought, other factors that could cause migration include climate and environmental changes.

In rural areas affected by DLDD, livelihood opportunities through land restoration activities should be ensured, he said.

The Indian official said that a stronger symbiotic urban-rural linkage targeting vulnerable groups that include women, rural youth, refugees, and internally displaced person must be provided with on-farm and off-farm employment.

The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner under Ministry of Home Affairs is the designated authority in India that compiles information on migration based on the data compiled during national census which usually takes place at a gap of ten years’ time interval.
