Taliban on Wednesday warned the US of 'consequences' over its use of drones in Afghan airspace. Calling itself 'sole legal entity' and 'custodian of Afghanistan's land and airspace', the Taliban alleged that Afghan airspace was being 'invaded' by US drones.

The Taliban also claimed that the US was violating commitments made to Taliban during negotiations that took place in Doha, Qatar.

To justify its warning, the Taliban attempted to underline that all countries were sole owners of their airspace. It called on the US and other countries to uphold 'international rights, laws and commitments' and spoke of 'mutual respect'.

Tech It Out: India's big bet on drones

India has highlighted how terrorists are using drones as a "low-cost option" at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Monday. The development comes even as, over the weekend, drones were used to mount an attack on the technical area of the Jammu Air Force Station.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, V S K Kaumudi, Special Secretary (Internal Security), Ministry of Home Affairs said, "Another add-on to existing worries is the use of drones", explaining that they are a "low-cost option and easily available." The utilisation of these aerial/sub-surface platforms for sinister purposes by terrorist groups, such as intelligence collection, weapon/explosives delivery and targeted attacks" has become an "imminent danger and challenge for security agencies worldwide."

Kaumudi pointed out, "The possibility of the use of weaponized drones for terrorist purposes against strategic and commercial assets calls for serious attention by the member states", adding, "We have witnessed terrorists using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to smuggle weapons across borders."

He was addressing the second High-Level Conference of the Heads of the Counter-Terrorism Agencies of the Member States.

The use of drones during the Jammu incident was the first-ever use of drones in an attack in India. The attack led to "two low-intensity explosions" and "minor damage to the roof of a building", according to the Indian Air Force. Since then, there have been more cases of drones being spotted.

This is not the first time India has expressed its worries over drones. At last week's SCO NSA meeting, NSA Ajit Doval raised the issue of the need to monitor new technologies used by terrorists, such as drones for weapon smuggling.

The Indian official slammed Pakistan during his address. He said, "It is high time that the international community called upon Pakistan to take effective, verifiable, and irreversible actions against terror outfits operating on the territory under its control and not take the high road of morality, which is only laden with mines of falsehood."

China has been deploying unmanned technologies on a large scale in the past few years with the PLA providing high tech support. Reports say Chinese military researchers may have found a way to land hypersonic drone which travels at over five times the speed of sound.

According to reports, China's Dai Fei along with his colleagues from the People's Liberation Army Air Force have made improvements on the classified model of the hypersonic drones.

The improvements have reportedly been made on the air-launched, high-speed DR-8 or Wuzhen 8 unmanned drone which China had unveiled during its National Day military parade in 2019. The exact nature of the tactical changes are however unknown.

The Chinese military has reportedly developed the software connected to the complicated process of landing the hypersonic drone which travels at Mach 5 speed.

Hypersonic drones can reportedly be used against American F-22 and F-35 stealth aircraft. China possesses the GJ-1 and GJ-2 armed reconnaissance drones which it had reportedly deployed along the Line of Actual Control(LAC).

The GJ-1 and GJ-2 drones are part of China's Wing Loong I and Wing Loong II systems capable of striking targets with the capability to launch small air-to-ground missiles.

GJ-2 is reportedly a remotely controlled drone used for surveillance including striking enemy targets. China has been ramping up its drone programme for several years and has even exported them. The country's Rainbow military drones were eyed by several countries including Saudi Arabia, Iraq and other nations.

China's drone technology still is no match for the US Predator drone with sophisticated hunter-killer capability and deadly Hellfire missiles. However, PLARF's recent innovation in drone technology may tilt the balance in China's favour.

The Chinese defence force had earlier unveiled the road-mobile DF-41 intercontinental ballistic missile and JL-2 submarine-launched ballistic missile at Beijing's Tiananmen Square showcasing the country's nuclear deterrence capability.

According to the defence establishment, the area falling under three km radius from the perimeter of naval installations in Tamil Nadu has been designated as a 'No Fly Zone'. This means that individuals/civil agencies are prohibited from flying non-conventional aerial objects, such as drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) without any prior permission.

In a stern warning, it has been stated that “The Indian Navy will destroy or confiscate any non-conventional aerial object including drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) found flying without proper approval. Further, the operator found violating these orders will be charged under the provisions of Indian Penal Code.”

It was added that the approval for using drones by any operator/government agency is governed by the guidelines issued by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). In case of an approved, scheduled flying operation, the approval from Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA) is to be obtained through Digi Sky Website, and a copy of the approval letter is to be submitted to Headquarter Tamil Nadu & Puducherry Naval Area/ Staff Officer (Security) and concerned Naval Station at least a week prior to the flying operation.

In July, the areas falling within three km radius of the perimeter of Indian Naval Air Station INS Rajali in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu were designated as 'No Fly Zone'A similar warning regarding the confiscation and destruction of the UAV/drone and legal action against the violators was emphasised upon, back then.

It is understood that this warning gains significance, given the recent terror attacks on defence facilities in Jammu and Kashmir, using explosive laden drones. These mini flying machines pose a significant threat as they can be launched from anywhere, in a short notice and can cause damage to life and property.

Jammu Airbase Blasts: Drones used to drop explosives

Three drones hit near Iraqi city of Arbil on Saturday. The city has a US consulate. As per a Iraqi Kurdish official, the drones were laden with explosives.

The attack came just before Hashed al-Shabbi, a pro-Iranian paramilitary alliance, held a military parade near Baghdad. The paramilitary alliance is opposed to US presence in Iraq.

The drone attack took place overnight. Anti-terrorist unit in Kurdistan said, two drones struck a house and caused damage. The payload on the third drone didn't explode.

The US consulate condemned the assault in a tweet, saying "this attack represents a clear violation of Iraqi sovereignty".

US interests in Iraq have come under repeated attacks in recent months but the use of drones is a relatively new tactic.

The United States consistently blames Iran-linked Iraqi factions for rocket and other attacks against Iraqi installations housing its personnel.

Since the start of the year there have been 43 attacks against US interests in Iraq, where 2,500 American troops are deployed as part of an international coalition to fight the jihadist Islamic State group.

The vast majority have been bombs against logistics convoys, while 14 were rocket attacks, some of them claimed by pro-Iran factions that aim to pressure Washington into withdrawing all their troops.

In April, a drone packed with explosives hit the coalition's Iraq headquarters in the military part of the airport in Arbil, the Iraqi Kurdish regional capital.

The tactic poses a headache for the coalition, as drones can evade air defences.

In May a drone packed with explosives hit the Ain Al-Asad air base housing US troops.

On June 9 three explosives-laden drones targeted Baghdad airport, where US soldiers are also deployed. One was intercepted by the Iraqi army.

Are killer robots the next threat faced by humanity? A United Nations report claims that a killer drone trailed and attacked a human being without directives to do the same.

In 2018, the United Nations had urged countries to ban killer robots. But the plea was shot down. The recent report by UN Security Council’s Panel of Experts on Libya claims that “an autonomous weaponized drone hunted down a human target last year”.

The report was published in March 2021 in the New Scientist and foretells the dangers posed by militarised technology capable of making autonomous decisions. The attack in question was perpetrated by "Kargu-2", a quadcopter drone made by STM, a Turkish military technology company.

How did the robot attack humans?

The mishap occurred during a conflict between the government forces of Libya and a faction led by Khalifa Haftar, the commander of Libyan National Army, The Star reported.

Reportedly, the Kargu-2 is in-built with an explosive charge and can be used for kamikaze attacks. Drones are being perceived as the future in all spheres as technology continues to dictate our modes of living. Now, a staggering record was set in China after 3,281 drones took over the skies - displaying a camaraderie unseen before.

The drone show was also inducted in the Guinness World Record directory for using over 3,000 drones to put on a show, or in other words, for using the most number of “Unmanned Aerial Vehicles” in the air.

The event took place in Shanghai on March 29, and was undertaken by Genesis, a company owned by Hyundai. The previous record was held by Shenzhen Damoda Intelligent Control Technology for deploying 3,051 drones in September 2020.

New Zealand's government said on Friday that it was backing a new project that uses drone technology to understand and protect the endangered Maui dolphins in the country.

Maui dolphins live in a small stretch of ocean off the west coast of New Zealand's North Island and current estimates suggest that only 63 dolphins older than one year remain, raising concerns that they may soon become extinct.

The new Maui Drone Project is a one-year collaboration between the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), non-profit wildlife technology organisation MAUI63 and WWF-New Zealand.

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is capable of finding and tracking Maui dolphins using artificial intelligence.

The technology has the potential to compile detailed data on the habitats, population size and distribution and behaviour of the dolphins, along with many other types of marine species, such as other dolphins, seabirds, and whales, officials said.

"There has been unfortunately for many years disputes over how to best protect Maui dolphins," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said after announcing the initiative, adding that the government has stepped in to fund the project and help protect the dolphins. "But we need everyone to come together."

Fishing companies Moana New Zealand and Sanford Limited are also supporting the project. The government has already moved to restrict fishing around the areas Maui dolphins frequent.

“By advancing our understanding of how Maui dolphins behave during the day and throughout the year this project will help us ensure the measures our Government has already put in place to protect our Maui dolphins are robust and appropriate,” said Oceans and Fisheries Minister David Parker.

The drone ensures dolphins remain undisturbed as they fly at an altitude of over 120 metres (394 feet).

The incident had reportedly occurred on February 21 as the American Airlines plane 2292 was flying over the northeastern region of New Mexico at 36,000 feet.

Reports claim the FBI is investigating the incident. The Airbus A320 allegedly identified a "cylindrical-shaped object", with the pilot claiming it "looked like a cruise missile type of thing - moving really fast right over the top of us."

Earlier this month, the Pentagon had admitted it was wreckage of UFO crashes, according to author Anthony Bragalia who had written to the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).

The DIA reportedly released 154-page test results of a mysterious "memory" metal called Nitinol which remembers its original shape when folded, Bragalia claimed.

According to Bragalia, the documents revealed the tests were carried out by Bigelow Aerospace, a Las Vegas company which performs private contract for the Department of Defense.

The Pentagon had earlier said it was planning to form a new task force to investigate UFOs that have been observed by US military aircraft as some experts claimed they may be drones seeking to potentially gather intelligence of adversaries.

Last year there were "hazard reports" detailing encounters between US Navy aircraft and "unidentified aerial phenomena" from the Navy Safety Center.

The reports describe the observed phenomena as "Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)" -- the Pentagon's official terminology for drone aircraft.
