Russia foils Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow amid Kyiv's counteroffensive

A large fire broke out at a fertiliser warehouse in the town of Ramenskoye in the Moscow region on Sunday (August 13), reported Russian news agencies citing officials, amid doubts that it may have been caused by Ukrainian drones. The fire, which has since been extinguished, comes days after another warehouse in Odintsovo, a town to the west of Moscow, was ablaze.

What happened in Ramenkoye?

According to the Russian state news agency RIA, the size of the fire had reached 2,700 square metres before it was localised and put out.

Images and videos showed thick black smoke and a flame emerging from the site which could be seen from hundreds of metres away.

The Moscow region prosecutor’s office said the preliminary cause of the fire was a violation of fire safety requirements during welding work, reported the Russian state news agency, TASS. Additionally, the media report citing the warehouse’s owners said that all employees had left the premises.

Series of fires and explosions around Moscow

The Russian capital city and its surrounding areas have recently witnessed a rise in incidents of warehouse fires or explosions.

The incident on Sunday comes days after TASS citing the Russian emergency service reported a massive fire in a warehouse in Odintsovo, a town to the west of Moscow between Vladimir Putin and the Vnukovo airport.

According to TASS, the fire on Thursday (August 10) started in the warehouse, 6.5 kilometres away from Putin’s presidential residence in Novo-Ogaryovo. The size of the fire was reported to be 2,000 square metres, as of midnight (local time). However, the cause of the fire was not immediately known.

A day prior to that, a powerful explosion ripped through a factory which the Russian media has previously said manufactures military equipment like night vision goggles and is around 70 kilometres northeast of Moscow.

The explosion had also led to the death of one woman and injured more than 50, said the Russian officials, at the time. One of the victims has died as a result of their injuries, the TASS news had previously reported.

Connection to Ukraine drone attacks?

These incidents have reportedly been linked to a rise in alleged Ukrainian drone attacks in and around the capital city, by pro-Kremlin commentators, as Russia is in the midst of what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

While Kyiv has not directly claimed responsibility for any attacks against Russia, top officials have reportedly welcomed them. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, last month, said “war” was coming to Russia, hours after a drone attack on the capital Moscow.

“Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia – to its symbolic centres and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process,” Zelensky had said at the time.
Additionally, the media report citing the warehouse’s owners said that all employees had left the premises. Series of fires and explosions around Moscow The Russian capital city and its surrounding areas have recently witnessed a rise in incidents of warehouse fires or explosions. Here we bring you a quick round-up of all the latest news and top headlines from all across the globe: All the heads of Ukraine's regional military recruitment centres will be dismissed, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on August 11, amid concerns about corruption. Zelensky said a review of Ukraine's recruiting centres revealed signs of professional abuse ranging from illegal enrichment to transporting draft-eligible men across the border despite a wartime ban.

Russia-Ukraine war: Ukraine dismisses regional military recruitment centre head

Ukraine's repeated drone strikes into the heart of Moscow have made one thing very clear. No territory on either side of the Russia-Ukraine border is now safe from enemy attack. What is interesting is the fact that Russia and Ukraine instead of just relying on expensive missiles are more and more relying on cheaper drones to strike at their enemy. On the 4th of August, Kyiv in an audacious attack struck a Russian warship that was stationed at Russia's Black Sea naval base of Novorossiysk. The video of the damaged warship 'Olenogorsky Gornyak' being towed to the port with the help of two tugboats has now gone viral. Even though Ukraine in its counteroffensive has so far failed to make any major headway, what is clear is that Kyiv is managing to pull off some very audacious attacks on Russia with the use of naval drones. Mohammed Saleh gets you the details.

Ammunition depot in Crimea 'destroyed' in Ukraine drone attack, cluster munition fired in Russian village

As the war in Ukraine continues the reliance on drones has exponentially increased and not just for Russia but also for Ukraine. Drones have been crucial in the war since the very first days at that time the Ukrainian servicemen deployed them to monitor Russia's troop movements. Last year Ukrainian president Zelensky also appealed for donations that there are Gifts of smaller consumer drones to be donated directly to Ukraine or to warehouses in the US and Poland for onward shipment to the front lines.

Ukraine's combat usage of drones also on the rise

Russian air defence units successfully repelled a drone attack carried out by Ukrainian forces targeting a pumping station on the Druzhba oil pipeline located in the area, reported Reuters quoting Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine.

In recent weeks, Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia have been increasing in intensity. Three Ukrainian military drones were destroyed during the attack in the Novozybkov district in Bryansk Oblast, Bogomaz said on Telegram. These drone attacks have been occurring more frequently in recent weeks, often focusing on energy facilities. While Russia attributes the attacks to Ukraine, Kyiv has not publicly claimed responsibility for them.

The southern branch of the Druzhba pipeline, which was established during the Soviet era, traverses Ukraine and continues to supply crude oil to Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the pipeline has faced multiple disruptions. In the past, the supply to Hungary and Slovakia through the pipeline's southern branch was temporarily halted. Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the pipeline remains operational, serving as a crucial energy route for these countries.

Russian officials and media reported that Ukraine launched drone attacks on oil pipeline installations within Russian territory in late May, including a station that serves the Druzhba pipeline. The attacks were accompanied by shelling from Ukraine, which resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, according to Russian sources quoted by reports.
