The US Department of Justice has asked a federal appeals court to throw out the convictions of 12 people who were found guilty of seditious conspiracy related to the 6 January 2021 riots.

Although President Donald Trump issued more than 1,000 pardons for those convicted for their role in the Capitol riots, he opted to commute the sentences of a dozen members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.

That meant they could be released from prison, but their convictions remained on the record.

A massive new monument informally dubbed the ‘Arc de Trump’ has now received its official name, the ‘United States Triumphal Arch’. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed the title on Wednesday (April 15), explaining that the project is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. "In honour of this historic occasion, President Trump and the Department of the Interior will submit plans for the United States Triumphal Arch," Leavitt told reporters. Unveiling an image of the design, Leavitt described the proposed structure as a towering symbol of national pride. The arch is expected to rise 250 feet (76.2 meters), a height chosen to reflect 250 years of US history. She said the ‘monumental’ arch would stand 250 feet (76.2 meters) tall in honour of 250 years. The design includes a large golden Lady Liberty statue at the top, making it significantly taller than Paris’s Arc de Triomphe, which stands at 164 feet. Also Read: 'US and Israel have 'identical goals' on Iran', says Netanyahu; calls for Hezbollah dismantling Once completed, it would become the largest triumphal arch in the world, surpassing Mexico City’s Monument to the Revolution and Pyongyang’s Arch of Triumph. Chinese Social Media accounts have aggressively mocked the United States' double blockade of Iran, calling it the second “toll booth” run by Washington. Some people likened it to what the Somali pirates used to do, while others asked for the Yemeni's to create a similar toll in the Red Sea. Since the US and Israel launched their attacks on Iran on February 28, it has used its geographical leverage to close off the Strait of Hormuz. The US, following a lot of to and fro with Iran, imposed its own blockade, covering the blockade of Iran.Since then, a meme fest has erupted on Social media. One user wrote on the X-like social media platform Weibo- “The Americans: Since you all have too much money and are willing to pay transit fees, then we don't mind you paying one more fee.” Another user wrote in Weibo, "It would be wonderful if Yemen built another toll booth." Another viral joke across regional media was circulating, which claimed that the US blockade of Iran is like blocking back on Social media, "you block me, I will block you too". Another user created a parody of the Chinese philosopher, military general and strategist Sun Tzu: “Art of war(Trump's edition): Break an enemy blockade by blockading their blockade.- Don Tzu” The Iranian embassy also created an AI-generated video of Trump playing piano, and the lyrics on the theme of Strait of Hormuz blockade. Also Read: Lavrov says Russia will help stabilise energy prices in China ahead of Vladimir Putin's visit

This blockade by the US has significantly hurt the Chinese, as previously, Iran was allowing Chinese vessels to cross without any hassle. Chinese Foreign Ministry officials have levelled the blockade as “dangerous and irresponsible”. The US imposed the toll on Monday after the inconclusive peace talks in Islamabad. President Donald Trump pledged to refuse passage to ships found to have paid Iran what he called “an illegal toll”.

Donald Trump supporters live in their own delusional world, as three separate psychological research papers show that all of them have a common coping mechanism to keep backing their leader even when his lies and sexual abuse history are exposed. The papers were published together in the Journal of Social and Political Psychology. In October 2019, psychologists surveyed 128 adults who voted for Trump in the 2016 elections and asked them how they continued to back him even when things like rape allegations emerged. They all said they simply didn't believe them to be true. A second study was carried out in December 2019, two days after lawmakers voted to impeach Trump. Researchers talked to 173 MAGA supporters, and most of them outrightly denied the accusations against Trump, while some of them changed the topic and highlighted his policy decisions as president. Fifteen per cent of them said they don’t care. The last survey was done in 2022 after Trump was arraigned for playing a role in inciting the January 6 riots at the Capitol. US Vice President JD Vance used his Tuesday (Apr 14) appearance at a Turning Point USA event in Georgia to offer Pope Leo XIV some unsolicited guidance on Catholic theology, warning that the pontiff should "be careful" when commenting on matters of faith. Vance's statement comes amid a very public feud between US President Donald Trump and the Pope. Trump on Monday (Apr 13) posted a 334-word-long Truth Social post bashing the American pope, calling him "WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy". He later added to the controversy by posting an AI-generated image depicting himself as Jesus, healing a sick man. The Pope, meanwhile, dismissed Trump's criticism, saying he had "no fear, neither of the Trump administration nor speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel."Also read | JD Vance defends Trump post, calls AI-generated ‘Jesus’ image a joke, tells Pope Leo to stick to ‘matters of morality’
What did Vance say?
Speaking at a Turning Point event, Vance, who converted to Catholicism at the age of 35, lashed out at the Pope, saying: "If you're going to opine on matters of theology, you've got to make sure it's anchored in the truth."The flashpoint was Leo's public criticism of the Trump administration's war on Iran. The Chicago-born pontiff recently wrote on X that God "does not bless any conflict" and that "anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs."Vance pushed back by invoking just war theory, the centuries-old theological framework that holds that violence can, under specific conditions, be morally justified. He pointed to the Allied liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany as an example. "How can you say that God is never on the side of those who wield the sword?" he said. The Pope, meanwhile, dismissed Trump's criticism, saying he had "no fear, neither of the Trump administration nor speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel." Also read | JD Vance defends Trump post, calls AI-generated ‘Jesus’ image a joke, tells Pope Leo to stick to ‘matters of morality’ What did Vance say? Speaking at a Turning Point event, Vance, who converted to Catholicism at the age of 35, lashed out at the Pope, saying: "If you're going to opine on matters of theology, you've got to make sure it's anchored in the truth." The flashpoint was Leo's public criticism of the Trump administration's war on Iran. The Chicago-born pontiff recently wrote on X that God "does not bless any conflict" and that "anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs." Vance pushed back by invoking just war theory, the centuries-old theological framework that holds that violence can, under specific conditions, be morally justified. He pointed to the Allied liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany as an example. "How can you say that God is never on the side of those who wield the sword?" he said. "There is a more than a thousand-year tradition of just war theory." Also read | Pezeshkian warns Macron of 'broad consequences' if Hormuz is threatened, says Iran open to negotiations but... It doesn’t need to win a direct confrontation with the US. It only needs to raise the cost of stability. By signaling control, or even partial disruption, of the Strait, Tehran can:

Spike global crude prices within hours

Force rerouting of tankers, increasing costs and delays

Trigger panic buying and speculative trading

Pressure oil-dependent economies, especially in Asia and Europe

In essence, Iran doesn’t need to block the strait entirely.
Trump’s escalation doctrine
Trump’s warning, to potentially destroy Iranian-linked oil shipments, marks a return to hardline deterrence. It’s a strategy rooted in overwhelming force: demonstrate that any attempt to weaponize oil routes will be met with direct military retaliation. But this approach carries risk. Unlike land-based conflicts, maritime escalation is unpredictable. A single miscalculation, whether a seized tanker, a drone strike, or a naval encounter, can spiral into a broader conflict that markets react to instantly.
Oil markets: Pricing fear, not just supply
What we are witnessing is not just a supply-side crisis; it is a perception-driven market. Oil prices today are shaped as much by risk premiums as by actual disruptions. Traders are not waiting for the Strait to close, they are pricing in the possibility that it might. This has three immediate consequences:

Inflationary pressure globally: Higher crude means higher fuel, logistics, and manufacturing costs

Strain on emerging economies: Countries like India face currency pressure and rising import bills

Energy diversification push: Renewables and alternative routes gain urgency

The global chessboard
The blockade narrative also pulls in other players:

China, heavily dependent on Gulf oil, has a vested interest in keeping routes open

Europe fears another energy shock amid fragile recovery cycles

Gulf nations walk a tightrope between security dependence on the U.S. and geographic vulnerability

This is no longer a bilateral standoff. It’s a multi-actor strategic puzzle. https://www.wionews.com/videos/trump-horrifies-christians-by-depicting-himself-as-jesus-defaming-pope-1776102314350/embed
Who really has the cards?
Trump’s statement frames the conflict as one of dominance versus weakness. But Iran’s strength lies not in military parity, but in geographic inevitability. The Strait of Hormuz cannot be bypassed easily. Pipelines and alternative routes exist, but they cannot fully replace its capacity. So while Washington may hold superior firepower, Tehran holds something just as potent in modern geopolitics: disruption capability. And in a global economy addicted to stable energy flows, that might just be the strongest card of all. Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations, and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. The event soon shifted tone as reporters questioned Trump about a controversial AI-generated image previously shared on his Truth Social account, depicting him as Jesus. Responding, Trump said, “I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor and had to do (with the) Red Cross,” adding, “And I do make people better. Discussion then moved to escalating tensions with Iran. Trump asserted that negotiations had resumed despite recent setbacks, saying Iran ‘very badly’ wants to make a deal, while emphasizing that any agreement must prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Trump also addressed criticism from Pope Leo XIV, making his stance clear: “There's nothing to apologize for. He's wrong.” He added, "Pope Leo said things that are wrong. He was very much against what I'm doing about Iran, and you cannot have a nuclear Iran," and further described the pope as “very weak on crime and other things.” https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-vp-jd-vance-faces-historically-worst-approval-ratings-1776082512972/embed The conversation briefly shifted again when Trump asked Simmons her opinion on transgender athletes in women’s sports.
