Walt Disney Co's new streaming service Disney+ reached 28.6 million paying subscribers this week, the company said on Tuesday as it reported quarterly earnings that beat Wall Street forecasts.

Shares of Disney were flat following the results after bouncing between positive and negative territory.

The results showed Disney made a strong entrance into the streaming video wars dominated by Netflix Inc. The owner of sports powerhouse ESPN is trying to transform its business to capture audiences that are moving online.

Analysts at three brokerages had expected more than 20 million subscribers to Disney+, which is available in five countries including the United States. Disney+ will be available in India on March 29 through streaming service Hotstar.

Netflix, which began delivering online video 13 years ago, boasts 67.7 million paid subscribers in the United States and Canada.

Subscribers at Hulu, a streaming service Disney now controls, climbed to 30.7 million as of Monday, the company said. ESPN+ customers reached 7.6 million this week.

"(I) believe we're now well-positioned to not only withstand the disruptive forces of technology but thrive in today's increasingly dynamic media environment," Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger said on a conference call.

Iger said 50% of Disney+ subscribers signed up directly with the company and 20% came from its partnership with Verizon Communications Inc. He said the service did not experience significant cancellations after the end "The Mandalorian," a "Star Wars" series that became a cultural phenomenon thanks to a character commonly called Baby Yoda.

During an earnings call, Iger said that "The Mandalorian" will return in October and will go beyond season two, "including the possibility of infusing it with more characters and taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series."

Selling Disney+ in a bundle with ESPN+ and Hulu helped lower cancellation rates, Iger added.

Earnings for the quarter grew with help from healthy business at Disney's theme parks and the strong performance of animated movie "Frozen 2."

Excluding certain items, Disney earned $1.53 per share, above the average analyst estimate of $1.44, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. Revenue rose to $20.9 billion (16.03 billion pounds), up 36% from a year earlier.

The parks, experiences and products division posted operating income of $2.3 billion, up 9% from the prior year.

Disney was forced to close both Shanghai Disney Resort and Hong Kong Disneyland in late January during the busy Chinese New Year holiday to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

The closings could shave $135 million off operating income at Shanghai, and $40 million at Hong Kong, if they extend for two months, Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy said.

The bulk of Disney's theme parks revenue comes from its U.S. parks. Iger told CNBC that advance U.S. bookings had not been affected.

The Hong Kong park could see an additional $105 million decline in operating income during the quarter, McCarthy said, as ongoing anti-government protests have depressed tourism.

Disney's direct-to-consumer and international segment, the division that is spending big to build the streaming business, reported an operating loss of $693 million, below analyst expectations.

Operating income in Disney's media unit, home to ESPN, the Disney Channels and ABC, rose 23% to $1.6 billion.

Profit more than tripled at the movie studio to $948 million.

Consequences of the Coronavirus - Air travel is restricted, international business close down

For a lot of us, 'The Lion King' has been an integral part of our childhood. The story that taught us the concept of 'Circle Of Life', the story that told us about death, responsibilities, and ownership, the story that gave the world the wonderful phrase 'Hakuna Matata' may have released two decades back but the story still holds a lot of meaning in present times.

The original film was an animated feature that proved to be a game-changer for the genre itself and also became a textbook example of how vivid an animation film can be. Disney's remake of the cult classic in live-action format could also pave way for more such films where CGI enabled characters take centre stage.

The only big risk that director Jon Favreau takes with the new version of 'The Lion King' is agreeing to make a cult classic in a live-action format- to give it a realistic feel. But Favreau sticks to the basic from the word go and remakes the original scene by scene. The result ultimately is that the film is high on animations and technical finesse but lacks the magic and innocence of the original.

A story that draws inspiration from Shakespeare's Hamlet, 'The Lion King' is about a young prince Simba(Donald Glover), who grows up with the guilt of his father Mufasa's death. Mufasa- the king of the jungle was a just, brave king and it was always understood that Simba would follow his footsteps. A freak accident leads to the King's death and Simba is asked to leave his pack and the kingdom which is rightfully his own and never come back. Simba grows up amongst happy-go-lucky animals and befriends Pumba and Timon.

Things are smooth untill Simba meets Nala (Beyonce) his childhood friend who asks him to come back and claim his rightful place. Together with Nala and his friends, Simba heads back to claim what his position and save his kingdom from the evil clutches of his Uncle Scar.

The film sticks to the basics. The story does not tamper the original plot and the impressive line up of actors voicing the popular characters gives the film a lot of weight. Glover appears as the grown-up Simba only an hour into the film, but it's great to hear him as the reluctant prince of the Jungle. Whoever thought of getting Beyonce on board to voice Nala should be given an award because every time Beyonce croons- even if a line or two- it seems magical. Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon and John Oliver as Zazu get the best lines of course.

Hans Zimmer, the original composer of 1994 movie, gives the score of the new one as well and recreates the same score once again. The songs- 'Circle Of Life', 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight' and the classic 'Hakuna Matata' are all recreated with the new artists and will make you sing along.

The past few years, Disney has taken up some of its greatest animations and turned them into live-action films. While the essence of 'The Lion King' remains the same, somehow, the magic and charm of the original are missing.

The CGI created animals are all too real but lack the expressions that the original animated ones had and brought so much joy the viewers. The way Africa came alive in the original film, ironically never looks that vivid and lush in the live-action format. The result is that the film is technically very good but somewhere lacks the soul.

Disney, of course, has not remade the film for people who have grown up on the original. Its target audience is children and for them, Favreau's version serves as a beautiful insight into the jungle life. For those, like me, who have grown up loving the 1994 cult classic- best to stick to the original.

'The Lion King' review: The film is good but not as great as the original

There was a time when Disney movies were all about the prince charming saving the girl of his dreams and walking into the sunset for a happily ever after. For a generation who grew up watching Disney films, the idea of a fairytale fantasy was typical. A damsel in distress, trying to find her way, being targetted by an evil witch and how a handsome prince would come and rescue her from all troubles and miseries. Year after year, Disney churned out similar stories. And we all grew up with a skewed sense of a perfect fairytale. But in 2013, with 'Frozen', Disney tried to change its narrative.&nbsp;

'Frozen' gave millions of young girls a new hero to look up to. Here was a story of a sister, trying to correct things and find her recluse elder sister, who had escaped to a faraway land unable to cope with her magical powers. Complete with visuals effects, soulful music, and superb animation- 'Frozen' made its place in every little girl's heart.&nbsp;

Six years after Elsa and Anna found each other and more importantly sisterly love, Disney has come back with the sequel- 'Frozen 2'. And it's just as magical as the first one was with an important message for its young fans.&nbsp;

<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bwzLiQZDw2I" width="560"></iframe>

'Frozen 2' picks up from where the first one ended. Its been three years since Elsa and Anna(Kristen Bell) have been reunited and ruling over their Arendelle. But Elsa keeps hearing a voice that beckons her to head towards the enchanted forest to find out the origin of her superpowers. Together with Anna, Kristoff(Jonathan Groff), Olaf(Josh Gad), and Seven, Elsa embarks on a journey beyond Arendale to find out about her origins and set a few things straight.&nbsp;

Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee keep the magic intact and with some spectacular camera work and animation create an awe-inspiring world on the big screen. 'Frozen 2' works on so many levels. Just like its prequel, this film too has some beautiful soulful songs all thanks to the beautiful voice of Idina Menzel (who does the voice over for Elsa). The songs take the narrative forward and are complemented with brilliant visuals. &nbsp;The animation, the visual effects are almost real-life creating a mystical mesmerizing land for the audience.&nbsp;

None of the songs, though, have the charm of 'Let It Go' from the first film, which became a smash hit.

While the visual appeal and the music are bound to impress one and all, it the story that is the actual winner. A more mature take at sisterhood and life and inevitability- the film has Elsa and Anna growing stronger as individuals and as a family. For once, Disney has a story of two women trying to make sense of the responsibility that lies ahead of them and not about a woman running into a man's arm for happiness. And that's perhaps is the biggest win for 'Frozen 2'- Elsa and Anna find happiness in their achievements and struggles, they make peace with their past and correct things that have been wrong for years. Of course, there Kristoff waiting in the wings to pop the question to Anna, but the film gives more focus on Anna's obsession to protect her big sister than her love story with Kristoff.&nbsp;

The two women create their path, find their calling, lead by example and own up to their mistakes even- how an ideal role model should be. And that's perhaps why 'Frozen 2' works the most. From sisterhood to braving the storm together as one unit, to even give each other the freedom to find one's calling- 'Frozen 2' serves it all- sprinkled with magical snowflakes.&nbsp;

There was a time when Disney movies were all about the prince charming saving the girl of his dreams and walking into the sunset for a happily ever after. For a generation who grew up watching Disney films, the idea of a fairytale fantasy was typical.

There was a time when Disney movies were all about the prince charming saving the girl of his dreams and walking into the sunset for a happily ever after. For a generation who grew up watching Disney films, the idea of a fairytale fantasy was typical. A damsel in distress, trying to find her way, being targetted by an evil witch and how a handsome prince would come and rescue her from all troubles and miseries. Year after year, Disney churned out similar stories. And we all grew up with a skewed sense of a perfect fairytale. But in 2013, with 'Frozen', Disney tried to change its narrative. 'Frozen' gave millions of young girls a new hero to look up to. Here was a story of a sister, trying to correct things and find her recluse elder sister, who had escaped to a faraway land unable to cope with her magical powers. Complete with visuals effects, soulful music, and superb animation- 'Frozen' made its place in every little girl's heart. Six years after Elsa and Anna found each other and more importantly sisterly love, Disney has come back with the sequel- 'Frozen 2'. And it's just as magical as the first one was with an important message for its young fans. 'Frozen 2' picks up from where the first one ended. Its been three years since Elsa and Anna(Kristen Bell) have been reunited and ruling over their Arendelle. But Elsa keeps hearing a voice that beckons her to head towards the enchanted forest to find out the origin of her superpowers. Together with Anna, Kristoff(Jonathan Groff), Olaf(Josh Gad), and Seven, Elsa embarks on a journey beyond Arendale to find out about her origins and set a few things straight. Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee keep the magic intact and with some spectacular camera work and animation create an awe-inspiring world on the big screen. 'Frozen 2' works on so many levels. Just like its prequel, this film too has some beautiful soulful songs all thanks to the beautiful voice of Idina Menzel (who does the voice over for Elsa). The songs take the narrative forward and are complemented with brilliant visuals. The animation, the visual effects are almost real-life creating a mystical mesmerizing land for the audience. None of the songs, though, have the charm of 'Let It Go' from the first film, which became a smash hit. While the visual appeal and the music are bound to impress one and all, it the story that is the actual winner. A more mature take at sisterhood and life and inevitability- the film has Elsa and Anna growing stronger as individuals and as a family. For once, Disney has a story of two women trying to make sense of the responsibility that lies ahead of them and not about a woman running into a man's arm for happiness. And that's perhaps is the biggest win for 'Frozen 2'- Elsa and Anna find happiness in their achievements and struggles, they make peace with their past and correct things that have been wrong for years. Of course, there Kristoff waiting in the wings to pop the question to Anna, but the film gives more focus on Anna's obsession to protect her big sister than her love story with Kristoff. The two women create their path, find their calling, lead by example and own up to their mistakes even- how an ideal role model should be. And that's perhaps why 'Frozen 2' works the most. From sisterhood to braving the storm together as one unit, to even give each other the freedom to find one's calling- 'Frozen 2' serves it all- sprinkled with magical snowflakes.

In the wake of deadly coronavirus spreading in China, Disney has shut down Shanghai Park. The outbreak of the Wuhan virus in the country has taken a toll on many lives, having claimed 132&nbsp;lives already and thousands infected.&nbsp;

Considering the Shanghai Park is a major tourist attraction in China, Disney’s move comes as part of the country’s measures to restrict exposure to the public at large.&nbsp;

The announcement was made by the Shanghai Disney Resort on its website over the weekend. The website cited the reason behind its closure as: "in response to the prevention and control of the disease outbreak." <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/coronavirus-debuts-in-india-possible-cases-registered-nationwide-infected-thai-national-dead-in-kolkata-277047">Also read:&nbsp;Coronavirus scare in India: Possible cases registered nationwide, infected Thai national dead in Kolkata</a>

China is currently dealing with coronavirus that originated in Wuhan. The virus has also been reported in other countries as people continue to travel from China because of the health scare. Around 10 cities in China’s Hubei province have travel restrictions, including Wuhan.

Recently, China celebrated the Lunar New Year, a major festival in the country but all the festivities were cancelled over the fear of the virus. Beijing too did not celebrate Lunar New Year, which is a rare and drastic step.

In what comes as a surprise for all Disney fans, a South Korean NGO has filed a complaint against Walt Disney alleging that their latest film ‘Frozen 2’ has violated the country’s anti-monopoly laws by occupying 88 per cent of the domestic movie screens.&nbsp;

The Public Welfare Committee (PWC), an NGO based in Seoul, requested a probe into Walt Disney Korea's suspected monopoly of the domestic movie market. They complained that Disney has violated the country’s antitrust act.
&nbsp;
As per a report published in The Hollywood Reporter, PWC in its complaint said that by occupying more than 50 per cent of the market, Disney is trying to garner huge profits in a short time. &nbsp;It said, "Attempted to monopolize the screens and seek great profit in the short term, restricting the consumer's right to choose.”
&nbsp;
Disney has for a long time enjoyed a massive fan base in South Korea like everywhere else. As for ‘Frozen 2’, the animation film that was released on November 23 in South Korea, has minted $61.2 million in Korea. Meanwhile, it has <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/frozen-2-box-office-collections-disneys-latest-offering-crosses-700-million-mark-265894">crossed $700 million</a> in global box office collections.&nbsp;

This is not a standalone case as several media reports have stated before that a group of filmmakers earlier issued a statement requesting the government to take steps to prevent domination of screens by big-budget movies, in order to provide space for small budget films.&nbsp;

Disney makes dying fan's wish of watching 'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker' before theatre release

Disney`s 'Frozen 2' iced out the box office competition in North America, where family audiences powered the animated adventure to a dazzling $130 million debut.

The sequel kicked off above expectations ahead of Thanksgiving, which should parlay into an especially lucrative holiday frame. 'Frozen 2' set a November record for an animated film and stands as the biggest opening ever for Walt Disney Animation (not including Pixar). It`s also the first animated movie to hit triple digits in its debut outside of summer. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/frozen-2-review-elsa-and-anna-grow-up-and-take-charge-of-things-263883">Read WION's review of 'Frozen 2' here.&nbsp;</a>

Overseas, the animated adventure generated $223 million for a massive global start of $350 million.

The first 'Frozen' launched before Thanksgiving in 2013, collecting $93 million during its first five days in theaters. Brimming with hits like "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" and "Let It Go" that have since become classics, the original film became a certified sensation and still stands as the highest-grossing animated movie in history with $1.3 billion in global ticket sales.

'Frozen 2' received a slightly less enthusiastic, though still glowing, reception from audiences, who awarded it an A- CinemaScore compared to 'Frozen`s' A+.

In 'Frozen 2,' Princesses Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) reunite with Kristoff (Jonathan Gross) and Olaf (Josh Gad), to embark on an adventure beyond Arendelle to find out why Elsa was born with magical powers. The follow-up sees the return of directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, as well as original songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Also new to multiplexes, Sony`s 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood' kicked off in third place with $13.5 million from 3,235 theaters, a solid start given its $25 million price tag. Box office pundits expect the feel-good film will enjoy a long run in theaters over the holidays.

Tom Hanks stars as Fred Rogers in 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,'&nbsp;a biographical drama chronicling the real-life friendship between the beloved TV personality and journalist Tom Junod (portrayed by Matthew Rhys). Marielle Heller ('Can You Ever Forgive Me?') directed the movie, inspired by Junod`s Esquire article 'Can You Say... Hero?'

STX`s '21 Bridges,' a suspense thriller starring Chadwick Boseman, followed behind at No. 4 with $9.2 million from 2,665 venues. Produced by the Russo brothers, the film attracted a mostly older male audience and earned a B+ CinemaScore. Over 50% of ticket buyers were male, while 75% were over the age of 25.

'21 Bridges' follows NYPD detective (Boseman) who closes down every bridge in Manhattan as part of a citywide manhunt after a drug heist gone wrong. It carries a $33 million budget.

This weekend was an undisputed win for Disney as 'Ford v Ferrari' finishes its sophomore outing in second place, collecting $16 million for a domestic tally of $57 million.

Rounding out the top five, Lionsgate`s war drama 'Midway' earned $4.6 million in its third frame, boosting North American ticket sales to $43 million.

Elsewhere, Sony`s 'Charlie`s Angels' stumbled in its second weekend, suffering a painful 62% decline to $3.1 million for a domestic total of $13.9 million.

At the speciality box office, Todd Haynes` legal thriller 'Dark Waters' began its platform release, generating $110,000 from four theaters. The movie will expand to 100 venues on Wednesday. Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway star in 'Dark Waters,' based on a 2016 New York Times article about the lawyer who took on the Dupont chemical company.

Walt Disney Co&nbsp;said demand for its much-anticipated streaming service, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/disney-tops-earnings-estimates-ahead-of-streaming-launch-260718">Disney+</a>, was well above its expectations in a launch on Tuesday marred by complaints from users about glitches and connection problems.

Disney+ is relying on its extensive library of movies and TV shows as well as a new slate of content to take on market leader Netflix Inc&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/appletv-debuts-streaming-tv-service-with-oprah-and-aniston-259285">Apple TV+</a>, Apple Inc's&nbsp;newly launched streaming service.

Disney shares were up about 2 per cent, while Netflix was down 1 per cent.

"The consumer demand for Disney+ has exceeded our highest expectations. ...we are aware of the current user issues and are working to swiftly resolve them," Disney said in a statement.

Some users who tried to access the service were greeted by an image of "Mickey Mouse" on a blue screen, with a message asking them to exit the app and try again. Many others had trouble finding the Disney+ app in Apple's App Store.

It was not immediately clear how many users were affected by the outage.

"Not too surprised but @disneyplus looks like it's already falling over. On FireTV Stick can't load main page (Unable to connect to Disney+) and couldn't play The Mandalorian (some account issue)," user @pmhesse&nbsp;tweeted.

"Hopefully it's worked out by tomorrow's treadmill time."

"The Mandalorian," the latest in the "Star Wars" movie and TV franchise, is an eight-episode live-action series which stars "Game of Thrones" actor Pedro Pascal as a helmeted bounty hunter.

"While it's easy to focus on the temporary problems, there's no doubt that this also shows an enormous demand for Disney's services," said Clement Thibault, an analyst at financial markets platform Investing.com.

"Big launches often have their hiccups when consumers are fighting to be the first to have a given service."

Users who accessed Disney+ were upbeat about content from the Marvel superhero universe, the "Star Wars" galaxy, "Toy Story" creator Pixar Animation and the National Geographic.

"Today is the perfect day to just stay home all day on my couch in my PJ's binging all of my favorite Disney movies on #DisneyPlus," tweeted @JulieDwoskin.

Disney+ launch marred by glitches as demand overwhelms

Walt Disney Co. on Thursday reported better-than-expected quarterly results, fueled by the release of blockbuster films "Aladdin" and "The Lion King" as it prepared for its new streaming television service.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/disney-thaws-frozen-for-blockbuster-sequel-100m-plus-opening-expected-260487">Disney </a>profit in the recently ended quarter was $1.05 billion, down from $2.3 billion a year ago, on revenue that grew 34 per cent to $19.1 billion.

The slump in profits came as Disney absorbed key film and television operations of 21st Century Fox and geared up for its launch of the streaming service Disney+ that aims to compete globally against Netflix and others.

"We've spent the last few years completely transforming The Walt Disney Company to focus the resources and immense creativity across the entire company on delivering an extraordinary direct-to-consumer experience," said Disney chief executive Robert Iger.

"We're excited for the launch of Disney+ on November 12."

Iger said the company reached a deal for the service to be on Amazon's Fire TV platform, the latest distribution agreement for Disney+.

Disney shares were up more than five percent in after-market trading following release of the earnings figures.

Revenues in the past quarter were boosted by a 52 percent rise in Disney's studio operations with box office hits "The Lion King," "Toy Story 4" and "Aladdin" fueling gains.

The entertainment giant expects revenue in the current quarter to be boosted by the forthcoming release of a sequel to "Frozen" and the final installment of the "Star Wars" film saga.

It will thereafter take a "hiatus" from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/disney-unveils-star-wars-merchandise-at-britains-pinewood-studios-252305">"Star Wars" </a>box office films but has an array of spin-off shows planned exclusively for its streaming service.

Disney has become the biggest Hollywood player with the acquisition of studio and TV assets from Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox.

However, integrating Fox into Disney has cost more than expected and the newly added studios have brought in less money than hoped.

Disney saw smaller revenue gains in its cable and broadcasting operations as well as its theme park division.

Iger would not disclose details of pre-sales of Disney+ subscriptions, but said the price -- $6.99 monthly -- has met with "great enthusiasm" by consumers.

The Disney+ online streaming service will debut in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands before gradually expanding internationally in Europe then rolling out worldwide.

Its films and TV shows will be available, along with the library it acquired from 21st Century Fox. That includes the "Star Wars" and Marvel superhero franchises and ABC television content.

Disney+ will also combine offerings from powerhouse brands including Pixar, with content from Hulu and sports network ESPN.

Apple last week launched a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/appletv-debuts-streaming-tv-service-with-oprah-and-aniston-259285">streaming television service</a> that features a budding library of original shows starring big-name celebrities, aimed at winning over its gadget lovers at home and on the go.

The Apple TV+ on-demand streaming service launched in more than 100 countries at $4.99 per month.

Original Apple TV+ shows have so far been met with lukewarm early reviews, but the low subscription price and an offer of year-long memberships free with purchase of the company's devices was expected to encourage viewers to tune in.

Netflix, meanwhile, has budgeted $15 billion this year for original shows, on top of the billions it has devoted to exclusive productions in recent years.

Amazon, which has deep pockets thanks to its e-commerce and cloud services, has also poured cash into original shows for its Prime Video service.

This sets up a potential spending war among the major streaming players, according to analysts.

Even more competition looms on the horizon, with AT&amp;T's Warner Media to launch its "HBO Max" in early 2020 after reclaiming the rights from Netflix to stream its popular television comedy "Friends."

NBCUniversal's Peacock service is also launching next year.

Disney tops earnings estimates ahead of streaming launch

Six years ago, 'Frozen' shattered box office records, melted the hearts of youngsters and spawned a franchise so popular Disney was never likely to let it go.

And so Queen Elsa and Princess Anna return this month in 'Frozen II' -- a sequel its creators promise will be "even bigger and more epic," with its world premiere taking place in Los Angeles Thursday night.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Snow Queen,' the original followed Anna on her journey to find sister Elsa, whose hard-to-control icy powers had trapped their kingdom in eternal winter.

The sequel, out November 22, explores the royal family's backstory and promises to answer fans' questions, including the source of Elsa's formidable magic.

"That one question was just the beginning though," returning director Jennifer Lee told Disney's recent D23 fan convention.

"Why was Anna born the way she was? Where were their parents really going when that ship went down? Is there really such a thing as happily ever after?"

After a prologue set in the past, 'Frozen II' sees a mysterious voice return to haunt grown-up Elsa. It urges her to leave her happy castle and embark upon a new, perilous quest to a far-away enchanted forest.

The first 'Frozen' (2013) reigned as the top-grossing animated film of all time, taking nearly $1.3 bn worldwide, until this year's 'Lion King' remake came along to steal its crown.

"It became an absolute phenomenon -- the music, the characters, the stories really resonated," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Comscore.

- 'At least $1 billion' -

The movie's success was all the more remarkable as, unlike Disney's highly lucrative series of "live-action" remakes of classic animations, 'Frozen' was an entirely new brand.

"It is a big deal -- it's great to have your archive, to reboot your beloved Disney" stories, said Dergarabedian. "But it's another thing to create something out of whole cloth, and have it now become a film that's canonized within Disney as one of their greatest franchises of all time."

'Frozen' has since spawned a Broadway musical, theme park rides and merchandise from toy figures to books and video games.&nbsp;&nbsp;
In a show of the franchise's importance to Disney, 'Frozen' creator Lee was promoted to chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios following John Lasseter's 2018 exit amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

The sequel sees stars Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel -- who sang Oscar-winning showstopper 'Let It Go' -- return, as do the original songwriters.

Joining the starry voice cast are&nbsp;&nbsp;Sterling K Brown ('This Is Us') as a soldier trapped in the forest, and Evan Rachel Wood ('Westworld') as the princesses' mother, shown in flashbacks.

The excitement surrounding the sequel "will catapult it to a potentially $100m-plus opening weekend" in North American theaters, predicted Dergarabedian.

"At this point, it would be almost unthinkable that it wouldn't earn at least $1 billion worldwide."

"All you can hope is that you do a great job, that people are excited about your character and they want to include it in their repertoire of knowledge," Ackie, 26, said of the huge fan base for the franchise. New merchandise included products from Hasbro Inc, Funko Inc and The Lego Group. Disney, which paid $4.05 billion for Star Wars production company Lucasfilm in 2012, held the first "Force Friday" merchandise launch in 2015 ahead of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'.

Facebook Inc unveiled new models of its Portal video chatting devices on Wednesday, making the company's first foray into TV streaming hardware but offering a limited selection of subscription services.

The launch comes as Facebook is trying to pivot toward more private forms of communication, after years of slowing user growth, data-sharing scandals and calls for change to its hands-off approach to content moderation.

The company is already one of the biggest global players in private messaging, with its WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram apps used by 2.4 billion people each month.

It is keeping the focus of its new Portal line on video calling, adding the capability for WhatsApp calls along with improvements to a wide-angle camera that keeps users in focus as they move about a room.

Facebook is also expanding Portal sales into countries including the UK, France, and Australia while lowering prices to more closely compete with industry-leading smart speakers from Amazon and Google that sell for under $100.

Standard models of the Portal, which ship on October 15, will come in $129 and $179 versions. Portal TV will cost $149 and hit the shelves on November 5.

Facebook is hoping the social nature of its products will be its selling point, allowing users to watch shows together while interacting via video call on the same screen.

"I think that in a couple years' time if you have a smart streaming device that doesn't have a camera allowing you to video call people, you're not going to have a competitive product," said vice president of AR/VR Andrew Bosworth. "I think this is the killer feature for a device like this."

Bosworth also touted privacy protections like local processing of smart features on the devices, which means most user data will not be sent back to Facebook servers.

But Portal TV offers only a few music apps and has limited options for TV programming, meaning it could face a stiff challenge in attracting consumers used to content-rich rivals like Apple TV, Netflix, and Roku.

At a demonstration in San Francisco on Tuesday, the only way to stream shows appeared to be via Facebook's Watch app. Executives said Portal TV would have Amazon's Prime Video app loaded by the time it is available.

The company declined to say whether it had approached other content providers like HBO, Hulu or Disney.

Facebook does not disclose how many Portals it has sold since the device's launch late last year, but hardware accounts for a tiny slice of the company's total sales.

Apple Inc said on Friday that Walt Disney Co-Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger had resigned from the company's board of directors on September 10 as the two companies prepare to compete head-to-head in the streaming television business.

Iger departed Apple's board the same day the company revealed new details about Apple TV+, a $4.99-per-month service that will launch on November 1.

&nbsp;Apple is spending billions in Hollywood to secure original programming for the service.

The monthly subscription price for Apple TV+ undercuts Disney, which earlier this year announced its own streaming service that will feature its iconic children's content and cost $6.99 per month. The Disney+ service will debut on November 12.

Apple and Disney have long had a unique relationship among major American companies, dating back to when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs became a Disney director and major shareholder when the entertainment giant bought Pixar, the digital animation studio majority-owned by Jobs. Iger became an Apple director shortly after Jobs' death in 2011.

"While we will greatly miss his contributions as a board member, we respect his decision and we have every expectation that our relationship with both Bob and Disney will continue far into the future," Apple said in a statement.

Iger said it was "an extraordinary privilege" to have served on Apple's board for eight years.

"I have the utmost respect for Tim Cook, his team at Apple, and for my fellow board members," Iger said in a statement. "Apple is one of the world's most admired companies, known for the quality and integrity of its products and its people."
