<p>In a new discovery, astronomers spotted 12 new moons around Jupiter, as the total count of the number of its satellites reached a record-breaking 92.&nbsp;With this, Jupiter became the planet with the highest number of moons in our solar system. Saturn, which was till now the planet with the highest number of 83 moons, now stands in second place.</p>

<p>The moons of Jupiter were recently added to the list maintained by the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Centre, said Carnegie Institution's Scott Sheppard, who was part of the team.</p>

<p>The moons were discovered using telescopes in Hawaii and Chile in 2021 and 2022, and the astronomers confirmed their orbits in the follow-up observations.</p>

<p>Sheppard said that the newly-discovered moons range in size from 0.6 miles to 2 miles (1 kilometre to 3 kilometres).</p>

<p>"I hope we can image one of these outer moons close-up in the near future to better determine their origins," he stated in an email sent on Friday.</p>

<p>A spacecraft will be sent by the European Space Agency to Jupiter in April to investigate the planet and study some of its biggest and icy moons.</p>

<p>The Europa Clipper will be launched by NASA next year to explore Jupiter's one moon, which is said to harbour an ocean underneath its frozen crust.</p>

<p>Sheppard, who had a few years ago discovered several moons around Saturn, and had participated in discoveries of Jupiter's 70 moons so far, hopes to keep adding to the lunar tally of the two gas giants.</p>

<p>Sheppard said that Jupiter and Saturn have many&nbsp;small moons which are said to be fragments of the bigger moons which once existed and eventually collided with each other or with asteroids or comets.</p>

<p>The same scenario applies to Neptune and Uranus, however, they are so distant that moon-spotting becomes even harder.</p>

<p>Uranus has till now 27 confirmed moons, Neptune has 14, Mars has two and Earth has one. Venus and Mercury do not have any satellites.</p>

<p>The newly-found moons of Jupiter are yet to be named. Sheppard said that only some of the moons are big enough, at least 1 mile (1.5 kilometres) or so, to be given a name.</p>

<p>These first-of-its-kind mummies were&nbsp;discovered down a 15m (50ft) shaft at a burial site south of Cairo, Saqqara, an active burial ground for more than 3,000 years and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site is present at the ancient Egyptian capital Memphis and has over dozen pyramids, including the Step Pyramid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There were various statues and items of pottery found inside the discovered tombs at the ancient necropolis. The largest of the mummies is believed to be of a man called Khnumdjedef. Khnumdjedef was a priest, inspector and supervisor of nobles. Another mummy belonged to a man called Meri. Meri was a senior palace official who was given the title of "secret keeper". The title allowed him to perform special religious rituals.</p>

<p>In the other tomb rests a judge and writer named Fetek. Archaeologist Zahi Hawass, Egypt's former antiquities minister, revealed that all the discoveries are dated around 25th to the 22nd centuries BC. Ali Abu Deshish, one of the archaeologists who was involved in the excavation of the tombs said, "This discovery is so important as it connects the kings with the people living around them." &nbsp;</p>

<p>On Wednesday, experts said they had discovered a complete residential city from the Roman era which dates back to the second and third centuries AD. Archaeologists found residential buildings, towers and what they've called "metal workshops." It contains pots, Roman coins and other tools.</p>

The eggs they discovered showed signs of both hatching and not having been hatched, according to lead researcher Dhiman. He said that no bones had been discovered and that a micro CT scan was necessary for further investigation.</p>

<p>The nests that were found in the Narmada valley were close together. These dinosaurs laid eggs that were between 15 and 17 centimetres in diameter. Each nest, according to Dhiman, had one to twenty eggs.</p>

<p>Strength and flexibitility are typically mutually incompatible. Creating ultratough steel that can also stretch was a significant problem for scientists. However, there is a market for such a material in infrastructure and transportation as it is safe and lightweight.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To create steel with both qualities, the researchers developed a unique hierarchical nanostructure design for the study. In the process, they forge melted raw alloyed material at 650 to 800 degrees Celsius. Then, they let the air cool helping the material to form a unique structure.</p>

<p>However, to cool it down further, they used liquid nitrogen, having a temperature of minus 196 degrees Celsius. Then&nbsp;they heated it at 300 degrees Celsius to improve stability.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lead author Li Yunjie mentioned that the manufacturing method could decrease the cost of production of a tonne of steel by about $75 and decline carbon emissions by more than 100 kilogrammes of coal equivalent per tonne. "It contributes to enormous economic benefits and promotes green development," he told South China Morning Post.</p>

<p>Scientists believe that the epaulette sharks, which are found throughout the southern coast of New Guinea and the northern coast of Australia, evolved the ability to walk because it helped them search for food in environments which were inhabitable to other sharks.</p>

<p>"All traits are selected for when it allows [a species] to survive better and eke out an environment where they're safe and can get food," Gavin Naylor, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, told Live Science.</p>

<p>Epaulette sharks grow about 3.3 feet (1 metre) in length and swim in shallow coral reefs to hunt for their preferred food—crabs and other invertebrates.</p>

<p>When the tide recedes, they can be seen hanging out in tide pools and chomping off on these creatures.</p>

<p>"But once they're done, they're trapped. What epaulettes have learned to do is climb up in the reef and plop themselves in the next tide pool," Naylor was quoted as saying.</p>

In the footage, the diver can be seen swimming to safety, saving his life. The footage, which was filed in 2020, was shared as part of Discovery’s Shark Week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The video is based on Jimi Partington, who is a skilled diver. He climbed into the clear cage while the shark is seen nearby the cage, swimming among a shoal of fish.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Once he climbed, Jimi sees into the clear waters and watches the giant predator. The 16-foot shark got closer and closer on several occasions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A heart-stopping moment in the video shows the shark smashing into the box all of a sudden. The thurst threw the diver into the sea. Jimi tries to jump back in but he gave up and swam to a nearby boat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to CNN, Jeff Kurr producer and director of Discovery's 'Shark Week', said: "I have never seen something this terrifying before in my 32 years on Shark Week and it's also unbelievable that Jimi didn't get a scratch when he was struck by the shark."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added: "We captured on camera the footage, we thought he was dead when the 16-foot-long shark came near him like that which is unsurvivable." Amazingly, Jimi eventually goes swimming again despite the close call.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jimi said on Instagram: "It's been three years in the making and I can't wait for you all to see my incredible journey, including the closest I've ever been to a Great White Shark!!</p>

<p>“Thanks again for everyone who helped get me here after all that's happened, all my friends and family have been incredibly supportive and for that I'm so very grateful," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The plant was last seen in the country in northeastern Meghalaya state in 1986.</p>

<p>The discovery has been documented in the prestigious ‘Journal of Japanese Botany’, which is a 106-year-old journal on plant taxonomy and botany.</p>

<p>“It is the first sighting of the plant not only in Uttarakhand but in the entire western Himalayan region,” Chief Conservator of Forest (Research) Sanjiv Chaturvedi told to PTI news agency.</p>

<p>Carnivorous plants which generally grow on poor nutrient soil have aroused new interest in the scientific community across the world because of their potential medicinal benefits, the official said.</p>

<p>The plant belongs to a genus, commonly known as bladderworts, which uses one of the most sophisticated and developed plant structures for trap and its targets range from protozoa to insects, mosquito larvae and even the young tadpoles.</p>

<p>This discovery comes as a part of a project study of insectivorous plants in Uttarakhand.</p>

<p>However, the species face threat due to heavy biotic pressure because of being at a tourist spot.</p>

<p>Its operation is simply based on a mechanical process, that is by creating a vacuum or negative pressure area to draw prey inside the trap door. These plants are mostly found in fresh water and wet soil.</p>

<p>This was the first such comprehensive study in the State and so far, around 20 plant species belonging to the genus Drosera, Utricularia and Pinguicula have been found.</p>

<p>In a rare find, a team of researchers from Delhi University has discovered a rare dinosaur egg in India's Madhya Pradesh. As per a statement by the University, this is probably the first time in fossil history that such a find has been found.&nbsp;What's rare about this find is that the egg had another egg inside it. This egg-in-egg is a "rare and important find" as no 'ovum-in-ovum' was found in reptiles before this discovery. <p>Central India's Upper Cretaceous Lametta Formation has long been known for dinosaur fossil discovery (both skeletal and egg remains). Exploring the Padlya village close to Bagh town, the researchers documented a large number of titanosaurid sauropod nests.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There they found a dinosaur nest consisting of 10 eggs, including the abnormal egg. Before this find, no egg-in-egg fossil eggs had ever been found for dinosaurs or other reptiles like turtles, lizards, and crocodiles.</p>

Did the dinosaurs suffer from respiratory issues? Researchers make breathtaking discovery  

<p>As soon as the remotely operated camera glimpsed the bottom of the Weddell Sea, more than 1,000 feet below the icy ceiling at the surface, Lilian Boehringer, a student researcher at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany, saw the icefish nests. The sandy craters dimpled the seafloor, each the size of a hula hoop and less than a foot apart. Each crater held a single, stolid icefish, dark pectoral fins outspread like bat wings over a clutch of eggs.</p>

<p>Aptly named icefishes thrive in waters just above freezing with enormous hearts and blood that runs clear as vodka. Their blood is transparent because they lack red blood cells and hemoglobin to transport oxygen throughout the body. Icefishes’ loss of hemoglobin genes was less an evolutionary adaptation than a happy accident, one that has allowed them to absorb the oxygen-rich Antarctic waters through their skin.</p>

<p>The sighting occurred in February 2021 in the camera room aboard a research ship, the Polarstern, which had come to the Weddell Sea to study other things, not icefish. It was 3 a.m. near Antarctica, meaning the sun was out but most of the ship was asleep. <p>The paper provides “evidence of a complex and so far undescribed benthic ecosystem in the Weddell Sea,” said Mario La Mesa, a biologist at the Institute of Polar Sciences in Bologna, Italy, who was not involved with the research.</p>

<p>“I would not be surprised to find other massive colonies of breeding fishes elsewhere,” said La Mesa, who last year described the same Antarctic icefish species’ nest-guarding behavior from sites near the newly discovered colony.</p>

<p>Each of the newly discovered nests held, on average, 1,735 large, yolky eggs — low fecundity for a fish. An unprotected clutch would prove an easy snack for predators like starfish, polychaete worms and sea spiders, Cheng said. So the males stand sentry to ensure their offspring are not devoured, at least not before they have the chance to hatch, and may clean the nests with their elongated lower jaw, according to Manuel Novillo, a researcher at the Bernardino Rivadavia Museum of Natural Science in Argentina, who was not involved with the research.</p>

<p>About three-quarters of the colony’s nests were guarded by a single fish. The others had eggs but no fish, a fish carcass furred white with bacteria or nothing at all. Near the edges of the colony, many unused or abandoned nests cradled several icefish carcasses, many with starfishes and octopuses feasting on their eyes and soft parts.</p>

<p>“If you die in the fish nest area, you rot there,” Purser said. “But if you die at the edges, then it seems to be everyone grabs you and starts eating you there.”</p>

<p>The researchers observed that the colony occupied an unusually warm patch of deep water, with temperatures up to about 35 degrees Fahrenheit — practically toasty compared to other Antarctic waters.</p>

<p>Although the discovery of the nests contributes to scientists’ understanding of the icefish life cycle, it raises even more questions. How often are the nests built, and are they reused? Do the fish die after the eggs hatch? Or, perhaps the most obvious: “Why there?” Cheng asked.</p>

<p>The authors have no sure answers, only speculations. Maybe the warm deep currents guide the fish to the grounds. Maybe there is a bounty of zooplankton for the fry to devour. Or maybe it’s something else.</p>

<p>But there must be something special about the location of the active colony. Around 31 miles west, the researchers found a patch of seafloor similarly littered with nests: all empty. These nests were abandoned, overtaken by sponges and corals — long-living creatures that take years to grow, Purser said.</p>

<p>Waters above the icefishes’ expansive settlement also host hungry, foraging Weddell seals. When the researchers collected satellite tracking data from seals during the expedition and analyzed it with historical data, they found, unsurprisingly, that the seals dive primarily to the icefish nests. “They’re having a nice dinner,” Purser said.</p>

<p>Before the end of the cruise, the researchers deployed a camera that will photograph the site twice daily for two years, hopefully revealing even more about the life cycle of the icefish. Novillo said he is looking forward to seeing what the camera captures. “It might constitute the first field observation of courtship behavior and/or nest preparation,” he wrote in an email.</p>
