A Supreme Court ruling adopting a narrow 100-metre elevation rule to define the Aravalli Hills has triggered major debate and concern. Experts warn the rule could remove protection from over 90% of the range, opening it to mining and real estate activity and causing serious ecological damage such as desertification, water scarcity, and pollution affecting Delhi-NCR. Although mining is completely banned in Delhi-NCR, protesters have taken to the streets in Udaipur and Jodhpur, demanding an immediate review of the decision.
