The Delhi Metro, the lifeline of Delhi-NCR, has completed 17 years of operations and continues to remain the most popular form of mass transport in the city.

Measuring nearly 350 kilometres and having 253 stations, the Delhi Metro network has over the years spanned length and breadth, covering every nook and corner of the city and the nearby NCR, with a ridership of over 26 lakh people annually.

On December 24, 2002, the Delhi Metro began operations along an 8.5-kilometre stretch between Shahdara and Tis Hazari stations on the Red Line.

As the years progressed, more lines have been constructed under three phases and today, Delhi has one of the most extensive metro networks in India.

It has been built with assistance from Japan, which helped Delhi Metro with funding of its projects.

Currently, there are nine-colour coded metro lines -- Red Line (Dilshad Garden to Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda), Blue Line (Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida Electronic City/Vaishali), Yellow Line (Samaypur Badli to HUDA City Centre), Green Line (Inderlok/Kirti Nagar to Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh), Violet Line (Kashmere Gate to Raja Nahar Singh Ballabhgarh), Airport Express Line (New Delhi to Dwarka Sector 21), Magenta Line (Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden), Pink Line (Majlis Park to Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 and Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake to Shiv Vihar) and Grey Line (Dwarka to Najafgarh).

To mark the occasion, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) organised an exhibition, an audio-visual look back at the journey so far, a live puppet show and an instrumental music performance at its headquarters, Metro Bhawan, at Barakhamba Road.

"Commemorating the 17 years of operations of Delhi Metro, Dr Mangu Singh, Managing Director/DMRC, viewed the exhibition featuring paintings of the metro by renowned artists and photographs taken by our passengers," DMRC tweeted.

"Celebrating the special day, an event with instrumental music, videos featuring spectacular visuals of Delhi Metro, an entertaining puppet show featuring travel etiquettes, and a special appearance by Mr Shammi Narang and Ms Rini Khanna, the voice of Delhi Metro, was organised," it said.

The minimum and maximum temperatures of the national capital will hover around 26 degree Celsius and 34 degree Celsius with generally cloudy sky.

Apart from Delhi, thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh, stated the weather forecasting agency in its All India Weather Warning Bulletin.

"Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Konkan and Goa and Arunachal Pradesh. Heavy rainfall at isolated places over Coastal Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat region, West Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar and Andaman and Nicobar islands," the organisation added.

Rough sea conditions are likely to prevail over southwest and west central Arabian Sea. The IMD has adviced fishermen not to venture into these areas.&nbsp;

Until now, Delhi has received excess rainfall by 112 per cent. On and off good spells of rain were witnessed by Delhi NCR in the season.&nbsp;

Most of the rains were in the wake of active Western Disturbances and their induced Cyclonic Circulation over northern plains.

On a few occasions, Delhi has received few spells of hailstorm as well. In fact, the national capital saw an intense spell of the hailstorm on February 7.

Until now in the month of February, Safdarjung Observatory has recorded 17 mm of rains which is the highest rainfall since 2014.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court Monday prohibited the plying of 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles in the national capital region and directed the transport departments concerned to announce that such vehicles would be impounded if found plying in Delhi-NCR.

A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur, S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta said that advertisement on this should also be published in the newspapers.

The bench directed the CPCB to immediately create a social media account on which citizens could lodge their complaint directly about pollution on which appropriate action could be taken by the authorities concerned.

But in Delhi, people will continue to drive their luxury diesel vehicles. Farmers who are in distress are forced to buy farm equipment but people in Delhi will continue to maintain luxury," she added.

She further said that only farmers cannot be blamed for pollution due to crop burning as the Ministry of Earth Sciences has said that pollution load from transport was around 41 per cent.

Supreme Court bans 15-year-old petrol, 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR

As many as 18 Delhi-bound flights were diverted as thunderstorm and rain, with winds gusting up to 70 kmph, hit Delhi-NCR on Saturday evening, bringing some relief from the searing heat, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;

The weatherman said light rain was witnessed in many areas.&nbsp;

The dust storm pushed the temperature down by a few notches on what was a sultry day. The city recorded a high of 40.5 degrees Celsius and a low of 30 degrees Celsius, according to the MeT office.&nbsp;

The humidity levels were recorded at 71 per cent, according to news agency PTI.&nbsp;

Strong winds, accompanied by dust, lashed the city while bringing a sudden decline in the temperature.

As many as 18 Delhi-bound flights were diverted as thunderstorm and rain, with winds gusting up to 70 kmph, hit Delhi-NCR on Saturday evening, bringing some relief from the searing heat, news agency ANI reported. The weatherman said light rain was witnessed in many areas. The dust storm pushed the temperature down by a few notches on what was a sultry day. The city recorded a high of 40.5 degrees Celsius and a low of 30 degrees Celsius, according to the MeT office. The humidity levels were recorded at 71 per cent, according to news agency PTI. 18 flights diverted as dust storm, light rain hit Delhi

A massive dust storm hit the national capital in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Strong winds, accompanied by dust, lashed the city while bringing a sudden decline in the temperature.

This comes after the deadly storm on May 13-14 claimed over 80 lives across five states in the country.

During that time, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had said that the thunderstorm will continue for the next 48 to 72 hours.

Previously on May 2, at least 100 people died in north India and some other states, owing to thunderstorms.&nbsp;

Earlier, in West Bengal, five deaths were reported from Howrah district, while two deaths each from West Midnapore, North 24-Parganas and Nadia districts and one from Murshidabad district, as per reports.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the Met office said that in coastal areas, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, interior parts of south Karnataka, north Tamil Nadu and Kerala will also see thunderstorm activity. Northeastern part of India is also expected to experience some activity.

A squall and dust storm with a wind speed of up to 109 kmph barrelled through Delhi and neighbouring areas on Sunday, affecting flight, rail and metro operations, uprooting trees, and leading to incidents of wall collapse.&nbsp;

Nine people were killed in Uttar Pradesh and another nine people have died in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which also witnessed a storm.

Eight including four children lost their lives due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorm in West Bengal's&nbsp;Howrah while two died in Delhi.

The sky turned dark grey around 4:30 pm. Gusty winds and rain lashed the national capital, causing the temperature to drop around 10 notches.

The much-needed reprieve came after a sweltering day when the maximum temperature had reached 40.60 degrees Celsius, a notch above the normal. Humidity during the morning hours was recorded at 60 per cent, a MeT official said.&nbsp;

The strong winds knocked down a number of trees in the city.&nbsp;

Four incidents of wall collapse were reported from Najafgarh, Transit Camp, Nehru Place, Mohan Garden in Uttam Nagar and Raj Nagar in Palam, said a senior officer from the Delhi Fire Service.

Operations at the Delhi airport came to a halt due to the dust storm.&nbsp;

At least 70&nbsp;flights were diverted and more than 24 delayed, an official said.&nbsp;

Metro operations were affected at a number of stations on the Violet and Blue lines after trees fell on overhead electricity (OHE) wires.

The Northern Railways said the train movement was disrupted on the section between the Hazrat Nizamuddin and Palwal stations due to tree felling.

A few passenger and freight trains were held up for around 25 minutes because of the disruption. The Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express was also stopped near Sonepat due to the uprooting of trees.

According to MeT department officials, the Safdarjung Observatory gauged 4.2 mm of rainfall. The Palam, Aya Nagar and Lodhi Road areas recorded 0.8, 6.4 and 2.1 mm of precipitation.&nbsp;

The weatherman forecast partly cloudy skies and the possibility of light rainfall tomorrow.&nbsp;

The officials said two squalls whipped through the national capital. One clocking 109 kmph hit the Safdarjung area at 4:44 pm and continued till 4:46 pm. The other gusting to 96 kmph battered the Palam area at 4:33 pm.&nbsp;

The India Meteorological Department yesterday predicted that Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh would witness thunderstorm accompanied by the squall.

Its forecast said parts of Rajasthan might also see the dust storm.

Several dead as storm hits UP, AP, Delhi and West Bengal; 70 flights diverted at Delhi Airport

A dust storm accompanied by squall hit the national capital on Sunday after a scorching hot morning bringing down the mercury.

In a sudden change of weather, the sky turned cloudy around 4:30 pm and gusty winds swept the city.

The temperature was today recorded at 30.6 degrees Celsius. The humidity was recorded at 60 per cent at 8:30 am, a Meteorological (Met) department official said.&nbsp;

The Met office has forecast light rains will follow the dust storm.

Traffic came to a crawl at several areas in Delhi as the strong wind picked up dust and swirled them around, reducing visibility.

Flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport have been put on hold, news agency ANI reported.

Airport authorities had to divert at least 10 domestic flights, an official said. Vistara's Srinagar-Delhi flight was diverted to Amritsar and its Lucknow-Delhi flight was sent to Lucknow due to the inclement weather.&nbsp;

Metro movement at the Noida-Dwaraka line was stalled for 30 minutes due to bad weather conditions. The movement has now resumed, according to ANI.

The dust storm interrupted a programme that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was to attend in east Delhi's IP Extension. A Vistara flight coming to Delhi from Srinagar was diverted to Amritsar due to the dust storm, an ANI report said.
