<p>The 12.64-km Kalkaji Mandir-Botanical Garden section will be open for public on Christmas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The line, on which metro&#39;s new generation trains will run, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.</p>

<p>An advanced Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology that will facilitate movement of trains with a frequency of 90 to 100 seconds will also be pressed into service.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 12.64-km stretch is part of the 38.23-km Botanical Garden-Janakpuri West corridor under Metro&rsquo;s phase 3 expansion plans.</p>

<p>The section has nine stations in which Kalkaji Mandir is underground and the others are elevated. The line will cater to two major educational institutions; Jamia Milia Islamia and Amity University.</p>

<p>As of now, for travelling to south Delhi areas, commuters from Noida have to change trains, from Blue Line to Violet Line, at Mandi House Metro Station.</p>

<p>After a meeting of Delhi Metro Fare Fixation Committee, it was decided that fares will be hiked from October 10th, as decided earlier.</p>

<p>The revised fare structure will be: up to 2 km -- Rs 10, 2 to 5 km -- Rs 20, 5 to 12 km -- Rs 30, 12 to 21 km -- Rs 40, 21 to 32 km -- Rs 50 and for journeys beyond 32 km -- Rs 60.</p>

<p>As per DMRC&#39;s estimates, smart card users, who happen to be 70 per cent of the metro&#39;s total ridership, will continue to get 10 per cent discount on each ride, PTI reported.</p>

<p>Also, they will get an additional discount of 10 per cent while traveling during off-peak hours, that is, from the beginning of services till 8 am, between 12 pm and 5 pm and from 9 pm to end of the services.</p>

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) that runs the mass rapid transit system issued a statement saying that it was not aware of clip and the screen was under commissioning and testing. "The DMRC is not aware about this clip. However, this LED screen was under commissioning and testing by a private contractor and same is still under commissioning. The work is still not completed. We will check all the details of the testing and commissioning process of the contractor to check whether any such clip was played on the LED screen at Rajiv Chowk station and take adequate safeguards/ action," DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said in a statement. Delhi Police and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), however, said they have not received any complaint in the matter so far. Rajeev Sharma, an under secretary in the Ministry of Rural Development and a car-pool enthusiast, chose to board a metro to Vaishali that evening. His journey ended in an unusual manner. Upon exit at his destination, Sharma&rsquo;s metro card was declined and he was asked to pay a fine of Rs 10. His fault was that he did not exit the metro premises within the stipulated time after his entry at Central Secretariat station. There was a huge line of fine payers like Sharma that evening at Vaishali station. Only two passengers decided to lodge a formal complaint.</p>

On an average, commuters had to miss at least three trains for being too crowded.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The fine is to dissuade people from loitering and misusing the metro premises. But after a long working day, I doubt hundreds of us decided to loiter rather than getting home at the earliest,&rdquo; shared Sharma. He added, &ldquo;the frequency of the trains was lower than usual and all the trains had six coaches instead of eight. This resulted in a huge build-up of waiting commuters.&rdquo; He also shared that the staff at Vaishali metro station did not co-operate and insisted that he pay the fine. It was only after an hour that the station manager agreed that the delayed exit was not his fault.</p>

<p>It should be noted that December 27 was an inconspicuous day in terms of the traffic situation in Delhi. The city sees mad traffic rush on roads and the number of metro commuters also increases manifold on festive days.</p>

<p>Sugandha Sehgal, an assistant professor at Jesus and Mary College, comments on the difficulty in boarding at some stations. &ldquo;Rajiv Chowk can be particularly bad, especially for women. It is not as if we are delicate darlings. But how can we even squeeze ourselves in when there is not even breathing space in a coach?&rdquo; She finds this fine ridiculous and adds, &ldquo;Metro can easily create artificial crisis by delaying the trains or reducing the numbers of coaches during peak hours. Hundreds of commuters will end up paying this fine.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Somnath Sengupta, associate fellow at Observer Research Foundation commutes between Jangpura and ITO stations on the purple line. He swears by the metro but realises that his ease of commuting depends partly on the fact that there are changeover stations on his short route.</p>
