Aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing and defence technology company Shield AI are set to collaborate on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and autonomy for current and future defence programmes. According to a statement released by Boeing on Wednesday (March 8), the two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding "to explore strategic collaboration in the areas of autonomous capabilities and artificial intelligence".&nbsp;

The agreement, signed at the Air Force Association Warfare Symposium in Colorado, will be managed by Boeing Phantom Works. Steve Nordlund, vice president and general manager for Boeing’s Air Dominance organisation, said on Wednesday that the company has continued to leverage "talent from across the enterprise to make great strides in autonomous capabilities and programmes in recent years."

Nordlund added the collaboration with Shield AI would accelerate Boeing's ability to deliver these capabilities to the warfighter.&nbsp;

According to Wednesday's statement, Shield AI has created&nbsp;Hivemind,&nbsp;an artificial intelligence pilot that has flown a variety of aircraft. The defence technology said the AI pilot can enable swarms of drones and aircraft to operate autonomously without GPS, communications or a human pilot in the cockpit.&nbsp;

Shield AI's President and Co-founder Brandon Tseng that an AI pilot is the most strategic deterrent technology since the introduction of stealth aircraft and has proven successful in flying air-combat scenarios. Tseng, a former Navy SEAL, said that integrating Boeing aircraft with his company's AI pilot would redefine what large aircraft, crewed or uncrewed, could do.&nbsp;

"As the world leader in aerospace technology, Boeing has been exceptionally easy to engage with, so we are excited to expand our scope of work to co-develop, productise and bring to market the world’s best AI pilot for large aircraft,” Tseng added.&nbsp;

Boeing to collaborate with defence tech firm on AI for defence programmes

The US announced a new set of sanctions on Moscow on Friday marking the one-year anniversary of the Ukraine war to impose further economic costs on Russia. In coordination with G7 partners and allies, the US Departments of the Treasury and State will implement sweeping sanctions against key revenue-generating sectors like defence&nbsp;and banks, besides blocking access to semiconductors.&nbsp;

As per a White House press release, the new sanctions&nbsp;will result in sanctions being imposed on over 200 individuals and entities, including both Russian and third-country actors across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East "that are supporting Russia’s war effort."

The White House said in a statement that it was joining with partners in the Group of Seven countries to impose new financial penalties designed to stop the funding of Moscow’s war machine.&nbsp;The&nbsp;measures will include sanctions on 200 people and companies, restricting exports to Russia and increasing tariffs on products from the country.

US President Joe Biden said in&nbsp;a tweet on Friday, “From Kherson to Kharkiv — Ukrainian fighters have reclaimed their land. And in more than half of the territory Russia held last year, the Ukrainian flag proudly waves once more.”

The target will be a dozen Russian financial institutions, as well as Russian officials and proxy authorities "illegitimately" operating in Ukraine.&nbsp;Sanctions were also announced on "additional actors tied to Russia’s defence and technology industry, including those responsible for backfilling Russian stocks of sanctioned items or enabling Russian sanctions evasion."

"It also includes the targeting of Russia’s future energy capabilities in a manner that does not impact current production to minimize market disruption. The United States also is expanding its sanctions authorities to Russia’s metals and mining sector, tailored to minimize market disruption," the press release added.&nbsp;

Moreover, to restrict exports to Russia, the US Department of Commerce will take several export control actions, listing nearly 90 Russian and third-country companies, including in China among other countries, for engaging in activities in support of Russia’s defence sector.&nbsp;

These listings will prohibit the targeted companies from purchasing items, such as semiconductors, whether made in the US or with certain US technology or software abroad. "Commerce will also take action alongside G7 partners and allies to align measures on industrial machinery, luxury goods, and other items, as well as issue new restrictions to prevent components found in Iranian drones from making their way onto the battlefield in Ukraine," the statement read.&nbsp;

Another sanction includes increasing tariffs on Russian products. This will raise tariffs on certain Russian products imported to the United States, building on previous efforts to strip Russia of its international trade privileges.&nbsp;

These measures, the White House said, are designed to target key Russian commodities generating revenue for the Kremlin while reducing US reliance on Russia.&nbsp;

"These measures are carefully calibrated to impose costs on Russia while minimising costs to US consumers. Today’s action will result in increased tariffs on more than 100 Russian metals, minerals, and chemical products worth approximately $2.8 billion to Russia."

"The preliminary investigation determined that the remains were of a meteorological detecting instrument, which have been collected by the relevant departments for further evaluation," the statement from Taiwan's army read.&nbsp;

Giving out a brief description of the balloon, the army said that it was an about 1-metre diameter sphere and had an instrument box marked with simplified Chinese characters.&nbsp;The characters, the army said, are used in China and not Taiwan. It read, "Taiyuan Radio No. 1 Factory Co., Ltd.", "GTS13 digital atmospheric sounding instrument" and "meteorological instrument."&nbsp;

India to provide 'all possible assistance' to Turkiye after massive earthquake

India and Oman on Wednesday held the eighth&nbsp;strategic dialogue in Delhi which was led by India's Deputy National Security Adviser Vikram Misri and Oman's Secretary General of the National Security Council Major General Idris Abdulrahman Al-Kindi. The last strategic dialogue was held in Muscat in January 2020.

During the talks, both sides focused on strategic and security cooperation, defence and counter-terrorism. On counter-terrorism, the key focus of the conversation was on the expansion of terrorist propaganda, misuse of new and emerging technologies, fundraising and disinformation and are keen to work with each other on collective and coordinated response.

Another key aspect of the conversation was on preserving maritime safety and security in the region. Oman and India are maritime neighbours, sharing the coastline with the Arabian Sea. In the past few years, both countries have cooperated in ensuring maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. As part of the cooperation, the first meeting of the Joint Maritime Committee took place on 23 February 2022 virtually.

Major General Idris Abdulrahman Al-Kindi also called on National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. This is the first visit by Al-Kindi to India after his appointment as the Secretary General of the NSC of Oman and was in India from January 16 to 19. The ninth&nbsp;Strategic Dialogue between the two sides will take place in 2024.

The visit of Oman's Secretary General of NSC is part of increased high-level engagement between the two&nbsp;sides. Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan visited Oman in October 2022, while Oman's commerce minister Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef and foreign minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad visited India the same year.

New Delhi has extended an invitation to Oman to participate in the G20 Summit and meetings as a guest country during its ongoing presidency of the grouping.

According to the Defence Ministry, the missile has a three-stage solid-fuel engine and can strike targets with a high degree of precision at distances up to 5,000 kilometres. As per several reports, Agni-5 can cover a range of even 8000kms. The missile reportedly weighs roughly 1500 kg in payload. The missile weighs around 50,000 kg. The missile can reach an exceptional Mach 24 speed which is 29,401 km/h. Agni 5 is road-mobile and can be transported by a truck and launched via a canister. The missile is can be equipped with the MIRV capable of carrying multiple warheads.

According to multiple reports, Agni 5 can enter many parts of mainland China including Beijing. Some reports also suggests that Agni V can also reach parts of Africa and Europe and has a range of 8000 km. However, as per India's Defence Ministry, the missile has a range of about 5000 kms. ANI news agency citing sources said the missile has been made lighter by adding lighter composite material. This will enable the missile to go longer ranges.

Agni-V ballistic missile was fired on Thursday from Abdul Kalam Island in India's eastern Odisha state. This was the ninth test-firing of the Agni 5. The first time the missile was tested was in 2012.&nbsp;

The missile can reach an exceptional Mach 24 speed which is 29,401 km/h. Agni 5 is road-mobile and can be transported by a truck and launched via a canister. The missile is can be equipped with the MIRV capable of carrying multiple warheads. 4. Can Agni-5 cover entire China? According to multiple reports, Agni 5 can enter many parts of mainland China including Beijing. Some reports also suggests that Agni V can also reach parts of Africa and Europe and has a range of 8000 km. However, as per India's Defence Ministry, the missile has a range of about 5000 kms. The Indian military is willing to provide operational and cyber-security training to the Armed Forces of the Philippines as the two nations further deepen their defence engagement. But while Philippines has long been an ally of the US, why did it look towards India for its defence requirements? India-Philippines defence ties: A win-win equation

As many as 13 African defence ministers will be travelling to India to participate in the India-Africa Defence Dialogue that will take place on October 18 on the sidelines of the 12th DefExpo in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh will be addressing the dialogue.

The dialogue, the first of which took place in Lucknow in 2020, aims to increase India-Africa defence engagement, with India pitting itself as the potential defence procurement market for African countries.

The 13 countries who will represent at the defence ministers level are Angola, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Central African Republic, Mauritania, Madagascar, Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Cabo Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe and South Africa.

A release by the Indian defence ministry said that the meet “will explore new areas of convergence for mutual engagement, including in areas like capacity building, training, cyber security, maritime security and counter-terrorism". &nbsp;

All in all, 37 African countries will be participating at the meet, seven at deputy ministerial level, and the rest 19 at top officials' level.

At the deputy ministers level, countries such as Liberia, South Sudan, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Eswatini and Uganda will participate.

Whereas countries at the official levels participating at the meet are Egypt, Eswatini, Morocco, Comoros, Congo, Niger, Kenya, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Mali, Guinea, Seychelles, Somalia, Uganda and Zambia.

India has been increasing its defence engagement with the continent in several ways, with focus on New Delhi being the sole destination for the defence requirement needs of Africa, especially on equipment.

Egypt has expressed interest in India's Tejas light combat aircraft. This year saw a key visit by Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh to the country with a key focus on developing military cooperation, joint training, defence co-production and maintenance of equipment.

India sees Egypt as a hub for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) for Tejas aircraft for the larger African continent.

Under the security cooperation, India has increased its efforts like setting up of Defence Academies and Colleges and deployment of training teams in several African countries.

It has been associated with the establishment of defence institutions in Nigeria, Ethiopia and Tanzania and in the past, Indian training teams have worked with their counterparts in Botswana, Lesotho, Zambia, Uganda, and Namibia.

In 2019, during the visit of Singh to Mozambique, two Indian-made fast interceptor boats (FIBs) were handed to the Mozambican Navy. The boats are being used by the East African country for coastal surveillance.

New Delhi has had growing maritime security cooperation centered around Mauritius and Seychelles, something that is being extended to coastal African nations as well.

Goodwill visits by naval ships and defence training programmes are now a regular part of India’s defence cooperation with African nations.

Two other formations to be staged will be the Globe and Eklavya formations. For Globe formation, a C-17 heavy lifting aircraft and nine Hawk-132 from the Surya Kiran team will be deployed. The Eklavya formation will be led by Mi-35 attacking helicopters with four Apache choppers.&nbsp;
