In the midst of concerns over China's activities along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), India has taken decisive measures to enhance its defensive capabilities especially in Ladakh. Radars and a fleet of fighter aircraft, including the formidable Rafales, SU 30 MKI, and agile MIG 29s, have been strategically deployed at forward positions. These aircraft are not only on high alert for immediate action but are also conducting combat air patrols to ensure heightened surveillance of the region.

The deployment of these fighters serves as a clear deterrent against any potential provocations from the Chinese side. In the event of any attempts to disrupt the LAC's stability, India is prepared to swiftly move these aircraft to counteract such efforts.

India approves $3 billion deal to procure US predator drones: Report

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday said the self-ruled island would work to improve its rescue and defence capabilities with new technologies, adding that strengthening Taiwan is key to maintaining peace.

Tsai also pledged that her government would promote policies to safeguard maritime and border security after inspecting an anti-terror drill in Kaohsiung city in southwestern Taiwan.

“The safer Taiwan is, the safer the world is,” she said.

Tsai's remarks came as the democratic island faces increasing military threats from China, which sees Taiwan as a breakaway province to be retaken by force if necessary.

During Saturday's drills, Taiwanese security officers demonstrated how they would defend against terrorist acts at sea.

Some climbed from small boats onto a vessel controlled by “terrorists” and brought them under control.

Others rappelled down from a flying helicopter. The simulation ended with a dramatic scene in which some officers hung in the air as they were sent back to the helicopter.

Taiwan and China split in 1949 following a civil war that ended with the ruling Communist Party in control of the mainland.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday said the self-ruled island would work to improve its rescue and defence capabilities with new technologies, adding that strengthening Taiwan is key to maintaining peace.

Taiwan president pledges to strengthen island’s defence capabilities with new technologies

Defence ministers of India and U.S. recently announced an enhanced defence partnership known as INDUS-X, and we will soon witness India’s new defence roadmap. But while US is preparing to offer its cutting-edge weapons technology to India, the irony is that it hopes to use India itself as a weapon because India is the silver bullet U.S. needs. What’s the truth behind US’ helping hand?

Japan introduces new aid scheme to permit funding for foreign defence

Japan is offering a hand of help to its friendly allies. For the first time in history, Japan is breaking its aid rules. Japan plans to offer friendly nations financial assistance to help them bolster their defences. The move marks Tokyo's first departure from rules that forbid using international aid for military purposes.

What is Japan's new aid scheme that allows for overseas defence funding?

In a first, two Japanese firms recently unveiled their respective laser systems which will be used to shoot down incoming unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones, reported the United States-based online newspaper The Diplomat.

This comes amid concerns about an increased presence of Chinese and Russian militaries near Japan which has seemingly prompted Tokyo to ramp up investment in such technology.

The companies in question are the Japan-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) who displayed this technology at the DSEI Japan 2023 show, held in Chiba Prefecture.

A video by MHI shows the 10-kilowatt (kilowatt) fibre laser shooting down drones at a distance of at least 1.2 kilometres within two to three seconds. The officials from the company also plan to deliver the prototype to the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) in December, as per The Diplomat.

Speaking about the lasers’ features, MHI also said the Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) can be fitted onto ground vehicles for mobility and also utilised by the land bases of the Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces. “Any Self-Defense Force can use it from the ground as long as it is intended to shoot down flying objects,” said an MHI official, as quoted by the Washington-based newspaper.

When asked about the laser system’s capabilities to intercept incoming missiles an official said that while they have not conducted a “high level of research in-house”, it may be possible by increasing the output energy.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ 100-kW and 2-kW laser system

On the other hand, KHI has been developing a more powerful 100-kilowatt vehicle-mounted laser system, reported the Diplomat. According to KHI officials, their device in the two-kilowatt laser prototype can eliminate UAVs at the range of several 100 metres.

Additionally, both their two-kilowatt and 100-kilowatt laser systems use the same one-micrometre band fibre laser. The system detects a drone with an infrared (IR) camera, tracks it down and then shoots it with the laser, said the report citing officials.

According to the media report one of their prototypes has already been sent to the ATLA earlier this year and will begin tests and evaluation this month. In 2021, the KHI was allocated around $21 million from the MoD budget for demonstration costs of the vehicle-mounted laser system, reported The Diplomat.

The US announced a new set of sanctions on Moscow on Friday marking the one-year anniversary of the Ukraine war to impose further economic costs on Russia.
