<p>The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployed in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has been provided with a ‘Wheeled Armoured Amphibious Platform’ (WHAP) vehicle, designed both for land and water operations. Wheeled Armoured Amphibious Platform’ (WHAP) vehicle is an 8×8 vehicle developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).&nbsp;</p>

<p>WHAP vehicle has been developed with a focus on ballistic armoured protection and augmented blast resistance. It has a 600-horsepower engine and automatic transmission and has a 7.62 mm Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) for precision targeting.&nbsp;</p>

Indian PM Modi discusses defence, trade with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi

<p>India's defence ministry has approved the procurement of U.S.-made armed MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones, sources told Reuters on Thursday. India will buy 31 drones made by General Atomics worth slightly over $3 billion, one of the sources said. India’s defence ministry did not respond to a request for comment.</p>

<p>The defence ministry's initial clearance for the procurement comes just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves for a state visit to the U.S. next week.</p>

<p>According to the two sources, Indian defence ministry’s apex body for capital procurement met on Thursday to approve the deal, which is expected to be announced when Modi meets U.S. President Joe Biden next week.</p>

<p>Biden has made deepening defence ties with India a priority to counter China’s growing dominance, and has offered to collaborate on military technology even though the two countries lack a formal security alliance.</p>

<p>The ministry's “Acceptance of Necessity” is the first step in the procurement process, which now needs clearance from Modi's cabinet.</p>

<p>The U.S. government approved the sale of 30 drones to India more than two years ago, but the Indian defence ministry had been sitting on the decision.</p>

<p>The drones will predominantly be used by the navy in the Indian Ocean Region. Both of India’s traditional adversaries, China and Pakistan, have sophisticated air defence systems that can limit the use of the drones along India’s land borders.</p>

<p>The Indian navy has leased two MQ-9B unarmed drones since November 2020 for surveillance.</p>

<p>U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan finished his two-day visit to New Delhi on Wednesday, meeting his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval, Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Modi.</p>

<p>Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday said the self-ruled island would work to improve its rescue and defence capabilities with new technologies, adding that strengthening Taiwan is key to maintaining peace.</p>

<p>Subianto responded by emphasising Indonesia's perspective and history, stating that he was presenting a conflict resolution plan without taking sides.</p>

<p>The pact is expected to strengthen the economic bond between the US and Taiwan with the island nation receiving more US exports. It will also allow Taipei to resist economic coercion from China.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>21st century trade initiative</strong></h2>

<p>The trade talks, named&nbsp;US-Taiwan initiative on "21st Century Trade" were initiated in August last year. The talks began after Washington kept Taipei out of its larger pan-Asian trade initiative — the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last month, the two sides reached an agreement on the first part of the trade initiative — covering customs and border procedures, regulatory practices, and small business.</p>

<p>Taiwan hailed the agreement as "historically significant", adding that it aimed to finalise negotiations on all remaining issues by the end of the year. More complicated trade areas such as agriculture, digital trade, labour and environmental standards, state-owned enterprises, and non-market policies and practices continue to be discussed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Taiwan Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said on Thursday that the delivery of 66 advanced new F-16Vs from the United States has been delayed due to supply chain disruptions and the ministry was working to minimise the damage and "make up for deficiencies".</p>

<p>The United States in 2019 approved an eight billion dollar sale of Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) F-16 fighter jets to Taiwan, a deal that would take the island's F-16 fleet to more than 200 jets, the largest in Asia, to strengthen its defences in the face of a stepped-up threat from China, which claims Taiwan as its own.</p>

<p>Taiwan has been converting 141 F-16A/B jets into the F-16V type and has in addition ordered 66 new F-16Vs, which have new avionics, weapons and radar systems to better face down the Chinese air force, including its J-20 stealth fighter.</p>

<p>The first of the new F-16Vs was meant to be delivered in the fourth quarter of this year but that has been delayed to the third quarter of next year due to pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, the ministry said.</p>

<p>Speaking to reporters at parliament, Chiu said Taiwan had asked the United States to "make up the deficiency", including prioritising spare part deliveries for the existing fleet.</p>

<p>Neither the de facto embassy, the American Institute in Taiwan, nor Lockheed Martin immediately responded to a request for comment.</p>

Coastal security exercise 'Sagar Kavach' underway along Kerala coastline

<p>Japan announced on Wednesday (April 5) that it would provide financial support&nbsp;to help nations strengthen their defences, marking the country's first radical departure from the regulations preventing the use of foreign aid for military objectives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, the Overseas Security Assistance (OSA) programme of Japan will be run independently from the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) programme, which has been funding roads, dams, and other types of civilian infrastructure for decades, as per Reuters.</p>

<p>"By enhancing their security and deterrence capabilities, OSA aims to deepen our security cooperation with the countries, to create a desirable security environment for Japan," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.</p>

<p>As per three principles that regulate arms exports, no aid&nbsp;under the new arrangement would be used to purchase deadly weapons that recipients might use&nbsp;in disputes with other nations, the foreign ministry said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As put forth by the ministry, specific projects would likely include radio equipment for maritime surveillance and satellite communication, and work is already under progress to finish the first assistance programme this fiscal year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, or Fiji are likely to be the initial beneficiaries. In order to increase the maritime security of those nations, the foreign ministry launched a bid on Wednesday to begin an OSA feasibility study there.</p>

<p>The Yomiuri newspaper claimed on Monday that Japan is considering providing the Philippines radars to help it monitor Chinese operations in the disputed South China Sea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the foreign ministry, since the help would be offered as grants, only poor nations will, in theory, be able to receive it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Following Japan's statement in December that it would double its defence spending over the next five years in an effort to stave off China's expanding military power, the decision to broaden the scope of international assistance to military-related projects was made.</p>

According to Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, the Overseas Security Assistance (OSA) programme of Japan will be run independently from the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) programme, which has been funding roads, dams, and other types of civilian infrastructure for decades, as per Reuters. "By enhancing their security and deterrence capabilities, OSA aims to deepen our security cooperation with the countries, to create a desirable security environment for Japan," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. As per three principles that regulate arms exports, no aid under the new arrangement would be used to purchase deadly weapons that recipients might use in disputes with other nations, the foreign ministry said. As put forth by the ministry, specific projects would likely include radio equipment for maritime surveillance and satellite communication, and work is already under progress to finish the first assistance programme this fiscal year. The Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, or Fiji are likely to be the initial beneficiaries. In order to increase the maritime security of those nations, the foreign ministry launched a bid on Wednesday to begin an OSA feasibility study there. The Yomiuri newspaper claimed on Monday that Japan is considering providing the Philippines radars to help it monitor Chinese operations in the disputed South China Sea. As per the foreign ministry, since the help would be offered as grants, only poor nations will, in theory, be able to receive it. Following Japan's statement in December that it would double its defence spending over the next five years in an effort to stave off China's expanding military power, the decision to broaden the scope of international assistance to military-related projects was made. <p>A video by MHI shows the 10-kilowatt (kilowatt) fibre laser shooting down drones at a distance of at least 1.2 kilometres within two to three seconds. The officials from the company also plan to deliver the prototype to the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) in December, as per The Diplomat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking about the lasers’ features, MHI also said the Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) can be fitted onto ground vehicles for mobility and also utilised by the land bases of the Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces. “Any Self-Defense Force can use it from the ground as long as it is intended to shoot down flying objects,” said an MHI official, as quoted by the Washington-based newspaper.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When asked about the laser system’s capabilities to intercept incoming missiles an official said that while they have not conducted a “high level of research in-house”, it may be possible by increasing the output energy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other hand, KHI has been developing a more powerful 100-kilowatt vehicle-mounted laser system, reported the Diplomat. According to KHI officials, their device in the two-kilowatt laser prototype can eliminate UAVs at the range of several 100 metres.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, both their two-kilowatt and 100-kilowatt laser systems use the same one-micrometre band fibre laser. The system detects a drone with an infrared (IR) camera, tracks it down and then shoots it with the laser, said the report citing officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, KHI’s 100-kilowatt laser system would be mounted on a larger, trailer-type vehicle given the increased power output of the lasers which require a large power supply and cooling water circulation system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On 13 March, Minister of State for Defence in a written reply to Rajya Sabha member Tiruchi Siva said, the Indian government has given focus on indigenisation of various defence items to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The data states total defence export value stands at Rs. 13,399 crores as of 6 March, 2023. For 2021-22, the data stood at Rs. 12,815 crores while for 2020-21 it was Rs 8,435 crores.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India presently exports defence supplies to over 80 countries, name of those cannot be divulged due to strategic reasons, as per a government release.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The major defence equipment exported during last 05 years include Weapon Simulators, Tear Gas Launcher, Torpedo Loading Mechanism, Alarm Monitoring &amp; Control, Night Vision Monocular &amp; Binocular, Light Weight Torpedo &amp; Fire Control Systems, Armoured Protection Vehicle, Weapons Locating Radar, HF Radio, Coastal Surveillance Radar etc," the release added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In recent years, the Indian government has taken various steps to improve defence products and make them competitive globally.&nbsp;The push for Made-in-India equipments is a priority for Indian government as it strengthens and promotes the nation's self-reliance in the defence sector.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The indigenised equipments are made from locally available resources. They become globally cost competitive and it also facilitates integration of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in global supply chain.</p>

<p>In a separate press release, Indian government stated that India has reduced its dependency on defence imports. "The expenditure on defence procurement from foreign sources has reduced from 46% of overall expenditure in 2018-19 to 36.7% as per data till December 2022," it said.&nbsp;</p>
