Mohammed Shami claimed a hat-trick to secure victory as India pipped Afghanistan by 11 runs in a thrilling low-scoring group match in the Cricket World Cup on Saturday.

A day after Sri Lanka stunned England in Leeds, an even bigger upset looked on the cards only for India to sneak home by 11 runs after strike bowler Shami's last-gasp heroics.

Afghanistan made the most of a slow wicket to restrict India to 224-8, their lowest total of the tournament, but then struggled themselves. Needing 16 to win off the last six balls with three wickets remaining, they were all out for 213, slumping to their sixth successive defeat.

Shami dismissed Mohammad Nabi, who top-scored for the Afghans with 52, Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to complete his hat-trick.

"Shami was really good today. He was making the ball move more than anybody," India captain Virat Kohli said of the quick, who was playing his first match of the tournament.

"This game was way more important for us, because things didn't go as planned. That's when you need to show character and bounce back."

Having bled 397 in their previous outing against England, the spin-heavy Afghan attack had earlier redeemed themselves against India's vaunted batting line-up.

Off-spinner Mujeeb drew first blood in the fifth over when he bowled the in-form Rohit Sharma for one after India opted to bat.

India, known for preserving wickets and accelerating later, managed only 41 runs in the first 10 overs.

Kohli batted with trademark fluency, though, making up for a lack of boundaries with smart running between the wickets during his breezy 67.

He forged two half-century partnerships, first with KL Rahul and then Vijay Shankar, to steady the innings.

Replacing the injured Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order, Rahul made 30 before attempting an unnecessary reverse sweep and gifting his wicket. Shankar did not convert his start either and made 29 before falling leg-before to Rahmat Shah.

Nabi then struck the biggest blow in the 31st over when he had Kohli caught at point.

India still had enough firepower in their batting line-up but the unerring Afghan spinners straight-jacketed them. Mahendra Singh Dhoni made a laboured 28 and Hardik Pandya could not reproduce his trademark power-hitting.

Kedar Jadhav (52) hit the only six in the India innings but the expected late burst did not materialise.

Rashid Khan, whose figures of 9-0-110-0 against England were the worst in World Cup history, bounced back with 1-38 in 10 tidy overs.

Afghanistan wobbled early in their chase, losing Hazratullah Zazai in the seventh over but they made slow, steady progress even after Gulbadin Naib fell for 27.

Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Rahmat Shah (36) and Hashmatulla Shahidhi (21) during a two-wicket maiden to drag India back into the contest.

Shami conceded a boundary off the first ball of the final over but struck with his third, fourth and fifth deliveries to finish with 4-40.

"The total was not that much (to chase) but in the middle we needed some 80s and 100s because 20s and 30s aren't enough against a team like India," Afghan captain Naib said.

"When chasing around 220 you need some batsmen to take responsibility and go longer.

"We have lost four games very badly, but the last two games we have played really well. This is tough cricket against high-ranking teams, and you have to fight your best."

World Cup: Mohammed Shami hat-trick seals narrow India win over Afghanistan

Wahab Riaz called on Pakistan's World Cup strugglers to stick together as they prepare to face South Africa in a must-win game at Lord's on Sunday.

Pakistan have only three points from five games and to make the semi-finals they are likely to need to win their four remaining games and improve their net run-rate while hoping other results go their way.

Pakistan pace-man Riaz insists his team-mates realise the importance of the do-or-die game and he hopes displaying a united front against South Africa will spark a strong performance.

"We have to lift ourselves," Wahab told reporters. "We are each other's strength. We are all good friends and know that only 15 of us can lift the team which not even our family members can do."

Pakistan's defeat against arch-rivals India last weekend sparked a depressing few days, not only for the team but also millions of fans back home.

Team management gave Pakistan's players time off to unwind and come back refreshed after the India game.

And Riaz insisted his team-mates realise the mistakes they have made so far and are determined to make amends.

"Good teams are the ones who realises their mistakes, so we have discussed all those mistakes and a two day break has refreshed us," he said.

But the 33-year-old, who took three wickets in Pakistan's shock win over pre-tournament favourites England, admitted the bowling unit needs to work harder.

"As a bowling unit we are trying hard, We are all focused to do well in the South Africa match. You need wickets upfront in England but we were not getting that," Riaz said.

Riaz singled out middle-order slumps for Pakistan's downfall against Australia and India -- both in chasing 300-plus targets.

"We were going well in batting in both the games but lost crucial wickets and got derailed," said Wahab of Pakistan's collapses.

Pakistan slumped to 160-6 after being 136-2 against Australia, while they lost four wickets in the space of 18 balls and 12 runs against India.

Unbeaten India will look to inch closer to the semi-finals when they take on a battered Afghanistan at Southampton. With seven points from four matches, Virat Kohli's side are comfortably poised to make the next round. Former New Zealand all-rounder and four-time World Cupper Chris Harris gives his insights on whether India should experiment with their playing XI and give the likes of Kedar Jadhav or Dinesh Karthik a run-in in order to keep them match-ready and reduce injury concerns of the regular starting XI.

Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews inspired Sri Lanka's stunning 20-run victory over England as the veteran paceman took 4-43 to shock the World Cup hosts at Headingley on Friday.

England were all but out of the match after slumping to 186-9 as they chased 233 for victory.

Ben Stokes' blistering 82 not out off 89 balls, including seven fours and fours sixes, got them to within sight of their target.

But Stokes' gamble on giving Durham team-mate Mark Wood a ball to face at the end of a Nuwan Pradeep over backfired when the No.11 was caught behind as Sri Lanka won with three overs to spare.

Victory would have seen hosts England, bidding to win the World Cup for the first time, go top of the 10-team table.

But instead their second surprise loss of the round-robin group stage after a 14-run defeat by Pakistan, left them in third place, with Sri Lanka now just two points adrift of the pre-tournament favourites.

The top four at the end of the first phase qualify for the semi-finals, with England's next match against arch rivals Australia -- the table-toppers and reigning champions -- at Lord's on Tuesday now even more important to their hopes of a last four place.

Earlier, Mathews' painstaking 85 not out of 115 balls, with just five fours, helped Sri Lanka recover from a top-order collapse to finish on 232-9.

That seemed a below par total but with paceman Malinga taking 4-43 and off-spinner Dhananjaya de Silva following up with three wickets in quick succession, it proved more than enough as Sri Lanka enjoyed another memorable day at Headingley -- the ground where they sealed their first Test series win in England five years ago.

Malinga, renowned for his unorthodox 'slingshot' action dismissed Jonny Bairstow for a golden duck.

Toe-crushing yorker

James Vince (14), deputising for the injured Jason Roy, then fell in familiar fashion when an edged drive off Malinga was caught by Mendis at slip.

England captain Eoin Morgan, fresh from his one-day international record 17 sixes against Afghanistan, made a cautious 21, featuring a mere two fours, before Isuru Udana held a sharp return catch to dismiss the Dubliner.

Joe Root made a patient 57 off 89 balls featuring just three fours.

But a fourth-wicket stand of 54 with Stokes ended when Root was caught behind down the legside off Malinga, who then produced a trademark toe-crushing yorker to have dangerman Jos Buttler lbw.

Stokes badly needed someone to stay with him. But he could only watch as de Silva took three wickets for three runs in nine balls.

Moeen Ali marked his 100th one-day international by hitting a six, only to hole out irresponsibly off the next ball from de Silva trying to repeat the shot.

Stokes should have been out for 57 when he hoisted Malinga to deep square leg, but Mendis dropped the catch.

That was the cue for a furious assault by Stokes, the all-rounder hitting two sixes in as many balls off Udana, but Wood was the last man to fall as England's chase fell short on 212.

Earlier, England fast bowler Jofra Archer took 3-52 to join Australia's Mitchell Starc as the leading bowler at this World Cup with 15 wickets.

Archer had opener Dimuth Karunaratne caught behind for one after the Sri Lanka captain had won the toss.

Two balls later, without another run on the board, Sri Lanka were three for two Perera slashed Chris Woakes to Moeen at third man.

But Avishka Fernando, in his first match of the tournament, revived the innings with a dashing 49 that saw him hit 14 runs off just one Archer over.

India's young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant said that he is "feeling very happy" after getting the opportunity to play for India in the Cricket World Cup 2019, which is underway in England and Wales.

The 21-year-old was initially snubbed when India's 15-member squad was unveiled but when opener Shikhar Dhawan suffered injury, Pant was brought in as a cover.

"It is one dream for all to make India win. When I came to know that I have been called to England as a back-up, my mother was with me. So I told her, she went to temple and paid her offerings.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli said that the game of cricket has the potential to make a difference in children's lives as it improves the players as a human being.

David Warner's 166-run knock against Bangladesh on Thursday impressed the spectators and made headlines but former Australian cricketer Shane Warne is not happy with team's "conservative" approach in Cricket World Cup 2019.

However, Australia great and spin legend Shane Warne was unhappy over Australia's approach and expressed his opinion in a series of Twitter posts.

"Ps I still believe Australia can challenge India & England for the World Cup trophy, but not with this game style or batting order," Warne said.

"Awesome from Maxwell & a stunning 100 from Warner too. Khawaja doing great, but ridiculous he didn't run," added the outstanding leg-spinner, a key member of Australia's 1999 World Cup-winning side.

"Why wasn't this happening 20 overs ago? As I said in previous tweets, Aust has the firepower but have decided to play conservatively till the last 10 overs! Why?"

But Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell told about Warne's tweets by reporters, said, "I think we went at 13s (runs per over) for the last 14 overs so I don't think we went that bad."

"I always respect what Warne says," he said. "For us it's about going out there and doing the best we can.

"And whether or not we're batting slow or fast, I think you're going to get some form of criticism somewhere," he Maxwell.

Kane Williamson anchored New Zealand to a tense four-wicket victory at Edgbaston on Wednesday after an astonishing stroke of luck when South Africa failed to review an edge from the Kiwi captain.

The Black Caps' skipper was on 76 when he got a faint edge to a ball by leg-spinner Imran Tahir that Quinton de Kock took behind the stumps but South Africa took no action.

That decision could prove fatal to their tournament hopes, with the Proteas now needing a miracle to progress to the semi-finals after just one win from six matches, while New Zealand now top the 10-team table.

Earlier, Martin Guptill, who had been guiding New Zealand towards their target of 242 off a rain-reduced 49 overs with a minimum of fuss, trod on his stumps to spark a mini-collapse.

The batsman, on 35, pulled Andile Phehlukwayo and ended up swivelling, only to lose his balance and clip his leg stump with his foot.

Two overs later New Zealand slipped to 74-3 when Ross Taylor tickled a Chris Morris leg-side delivery and De Kock took the catch behind the stumps. Tom Latham's dismissal left them struggling at 80-4.

Jimmy Neesham (23) steadied the ship with his skipper but when he was out, New Zealand were back in trouble at 137-5.

Colin de Grandhomme came to New Zealand's rescue, batting positively and bringing up his fifty off 39 balls but when he was caught in the deep for 60 by Du Plessis off Lungi Ngidi, Kiwi nerves were jangling again.

World Cup: Hashim Amla becomes second-fastest batsman to register 8000 ODI runs

The Pakistan team under captain Sarfaraz Ahmed have failed to live up to their country's expectations and there will be a "robust review" of their performance in the last three years, the Pakistan Cricket Board said on Wednesday.

Pakistan are still trying to salvage their World Cup campaign as they languish ninth in the 10-team standings with one win from five matches.

They are still smarting from Sunday's heavy defeat by arch-rivals India.

The PCB is expecting the team to stage a comeback in the tournament but they would need something extraordinary to finish the group stage in the top four and make the semi-finals.

"The BoG had a discussion on the Pakistan cricket team’s recent performance across all formats," the PCB said in a statement after a Board of Governors meeting in Lahore.

"The members agreed the team’s performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 to date has been below expectation, but expressed faith, support and confidence in the side, and hoped they will ... bounce back strongly and finish on a high.

"...following the World Cup, the PCB will carry out a robust review and analysis of the side’s and the team support personnel’s performances in the past three years and submit their recommendations to the Chairman and the BoG for their consideration."

The 1992 world champions next play South Africa at Lord's on Sunday.

Pakistan announce 'robust review' amid World Cup struggle

Bangladesh's outstanding run chase against West Indies has given them the confidence to beat any team in the World Cup, captain Mashrafe Mortaza said ahead of Thursday's clash with in-form Australian at Trent Bridge.

Bangladesh overhauled West Indies' total of 321 with 51 balls to spare on Monday. They also beat South Africa and lie fifth in the standings, well in contention for a semi-final spot with four matches to go.

"That was a must-win game for us to stay in the tournament. I know a few players in our dressing-room who believe we can beat anybody," Mashrafe told reporters on Wednesday.

"Again, Australia is very difficult (to beat) but it's not impossible. If you have a good start you never know, so let's see."

Bangladesh's one-day international record against Australia has been poor, however, with only one win in 21 games against the defending champions who have won four of their first five games.

Australia fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins have taken a combined 24 wickets in the World Cup and Mashrafe said Bangladesh will be wary of them.

"I think the Australian bowling attack has a lot of variation," Mashrafe said. "They have Pat Cummins, who can bowl with a change of pace. I think they have some good spinners. There's Nathan Lyon (and Adam) Zampa.

"So it won't be easy like the other matches but confidence is the main thing... If we took that confidence into the ground and deliver to our best, you never know."

Bangladesh will count on all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who is the tournament's leading scorer with 384 runs, and Mashrafe said the rest of the team must take a cue from his match-winning performances.

"Shakib is brilliant," Mashrafe added. "Hopefully, he'll keep going. The way he's playing, I think we need to support him well as a team.

"(The) bowlers have to step up a little bit with what Shakib is doing. It's going to be a good batting track. Our bowlers have to... bowl really well to restrict the Australians."

'I feel emotional,' says Shikhar Dhawan after injury ends his World Cup campaign

India's first choice opener Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup 2019 after failing to recover from a hairline fracture on his left thumb.

During a presser on Wednesday, the Indian team manager Sunil Subramaniam confirmed the news to reporters.

Also, BCCI wrote on his official Twitter handle, "Shikhar Dhawan had been diagnosed with a fracture of the first metacarpal on his left hand."

"Following several specialist opinions, he will remain in a cast until the middle of July and therefore will not be available for the remainder of #CWC19," it added.

Young wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has already arrived in England as a cover for Dhawan. He reached Manchester and joined the Indian team ahead of the clash against Pakistan.

As a consequence, the 21-year-old Pant, whose omission from the original squad had kicked up a storm given his exceptional form in the past one year, has got the big break.

India's first choice opener Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup 2019 after failing to recover from a hairline fracture on his left thumb. During a presser on Wednesday, the Indian team manager Sunil Subramaniam confirmed the news to reporters. Also, BCCI wrote on his official Twitter handle, "Shikhar Dhawan had been diagnosed with a fracture of the first metacarpal on his left hand." "Following several specialist opinions, he will remain in a cast until the middle of July and therefore will not be available for the remainder of #CWC19," it added. World Cup: India's Shikhar Dhawan ruled out due to thumb fracture

England captain Eoin Morgan's name was added in the record books of cricket when he smashed a career-best 148 runs off 71 balls in a World Cup match against Afghanistan.

Morgan hit 17 sixes in his knock to break the record of most sixes in One-Day International (ODI) innings and also his century was fourth fastest in World Cup history.

His record-breaking innings inspired England to their highest -- 397/6 -- World Cup total.

"There are many guys in the dressing room and who can produce an innings like that - but to match up to the youngsters is amazing," said Morgan after England's 150-run win over Afghanistan.

Due to a back spasm during last week's win against West Indies, Morgan's participation was in doubt for the Afghanistan clash but he led from the front and played a captain's knock to prove why England are favourites for the title, it's just not the home advantage.

"Didn't really think it was going to be my day at any point, to be honest. I've had a bad back, looks like I'm getting old," said Morgan while receiving Man of the Match award.

Getting old? On the contrary, the way Morgan batted, it was a treat to watch him hit those towering sixes at Old Trafford cricket ground.

It felt captain Morgan is fighting to avenge the embarrassing ouster from the 2015 World Cup when a defeat to Bangladesh, saw England crash out in the group stage.

In previous three-four years, England have risen to the top of the 50-over rankings in a quest to win the tournament for a first time.

As England have never won the World Cup despite featuring in every edition since it was established in 1975.

However, in this edition, Morgan-led England are tipped for glory and he is well supported by Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes and the universe.

England vs Afghanistan: Records galore as Eoin Morgan leads the way

England captain Eoin Morgan set a new world record of 17 sixes in an individual one-day international innings as the World Cup hosts thrashed Afghanistan by 150 runs on Tuesday.

Victory at Old Trafford saw favourites England go ahead of holders Australia to sit top of the World Cup group table on net run-rate.

Morgan's six-hitting spree in his career-best 148 set the tone for England's team total of 25 sixes, which was also a new ODI innings record.

The Dubliner's innings was the centrepiece of England's 397-6.

That was the highest total of the tournament so far and the largest England had made at any World Cup, surpassing their 386-6 against Bangladesh in Cardiff 10 days ago.

Even though bottom of the table Afghanistan, suffering their fifth defeat in five matches, posted their highest World Cup total of 247-8 they were never up with the required run-rate.

There was a worrying moment when Hashmatullah Shahidi, on 24, was hit on the side of the helmet by a Mark Wood bouncer and fell to the turf.

But after several minutes' on-field treatment, Shahidi resumed his innings in a new helmet.

Shahidi completed a gutsy 68-ball fifty on his way to 76, while his fourth-wicket stand of partnership of 94 with Ashgar Afghan (44) was a record for any Afghanistan wicket at a World Cup.

Earlier, Morgan, dropped on 28, dominated a third-wicket stand of 189 with Joe Root (88), whose contribution to their partnership was a mere 43.

Afghanistan star leg-spinner Rashid Khan set an unwanted record with 0-110 in nine overs -- the most expensive return at a World Cup and second costliest in all ODI cricket.

Morgan's tally surpassed the record of 16 sixes in an ODI innings previously shared by India's Rohit Sharma, South Africa's AB de Villiers and West Indies' Chris Gayle.

He broke the record when he launched Gulbadin Naib for a flat straight hit over the Afghanistan captain's head.

Impressive Morgan

But the very next ball saw Morgan hole out off Naib to end a 71-ball innings that also featured four fours.

His innings, which featured 118 runs in boundaries, was all the more impressive as Morgan had been doubtful for this match with a back spasm suffered in England's eight-wicket win over the West Indies, in which he could not bat.

Jonny Bairstow got England off to a solid start, with England accelerating after James Vince fell for 26 when he mishooked paceman Dawlat Zadran to short fine-leg.

In sight of his eighth ODI century, Bairstow's 99-ball innings ended when he chipped a return catch to Naib.

Morgan, after an early mix-up that saw him sent back and get tangled up with opposing skipper Naib, settled in quickly.

He hit Naib for two sixes including a fine drive over long-on.

But the left-hander should have been out when he skied Rashid, only for Zadran at deep midwicket to make such a mess of the catch that the ball bounced out of his hands and over the rope for four.

Not even Zadran's eventual return of 3-85 could undo the damage of that costly error, with Morgan immediately hitting a soaring six off Rashid's next ball in a 36th over that cost 18 runs.

Root was denied a second successive hundred and third of the tournament when he holed out off Naib, whose 3-68 was a creditable return in the circumstances.

But the sixes kept coming, Morgan's 11th bringing up a hundred in 57 balls, with only Ireland's Kevin O'Brien, Australia's Glenn Maxwell and South Africa's AB de Villiers having scored faster centuries at a World Cup.

England set the ODI team record for sixes when Moeen Ali launched the penultimate delivery of the innings, from Zadran, over long-on.

Rohit Sharma scored his second hundred in three innings as India maintained their unbeaten record against Pakistan at the World Cup with an 89-run win under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method on Sunday.

Sharma's 140 was the centrepiece of a total of 336-5 that also featured captain Virat Kohli's 77.

Victory in this rain-curtailed clash saw India, who have now won all seven of their World Cup matches against Pakistan, remain unbeaten after four pool games at this year's edition.

"We have played good cricket, if you focus on this game too emotionally things can get haywire," Kohli said.

"We cannot approach it like fans, as cricketers you have to understand what needs to be done on the field.

"Rohit's knock was outstanding but to get to 330 you need a team effort and that is exactly what happened."

Pakistan, whose only 2019 pool win so far was a shock defeat of hosts England, were never truly up with the rate in the showpiece match of the 10-team round-robin stage.

They still had hope at 117 for one even though the most made by any side batting second to win a World Cup match is Ireland's 329 for seven against England at Bangalore in 2011.

But Kuldeep Yadav then struck twice to spark a collapse that saw Pakistan lose four wickets for 12 runs in 18 balls as they slumped to 129 for five in 27 overs -- long past the 20-over cut-off point needed for a result under D/L.

"Kuldeep is a wicket-taker. The ball to get Babar Azam was brilliant. A very important moment in the game," Kohli added.

A third rain stoppage came with Pakistan 166-6 off 35 overs.

The match then descended into something of a farce when play resumed under leaden skies, with Pakistan requiring an outlandish 136 more runs in five overs to reach a revised victory total of 302 in 40 overs.

That target which, eventually became 94 off the last six balls, unsurprisingly proved beyond them as Pakistan finished on 212-6, dealing a major blow to their semi-final hopes.

Criticised for opting to bowl first, Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said: "We had a plan to pitch it up but we didn't hit the right areas.

"We didn't capitalise on winning the toss and conceded too many runs. We lost so many wickets in two or three overs and that is what cost us the match.

"It is tough. We have four matches left and we will try our level best to win them all."

Bhuvneshwar Kumar limped off in the fifth over of Pakistan's chase with a hamstring injury that sidelined him from the rest of the match, with Kohli admitting the India paceman will out for a "maximum" of three matches.

Vijay Shankar, completing Kumar's over, struck first ball when he had opener Imam-ul-Haq lbw for seven.

Fakhar Zaman (62) and Babar Azam (48) repaired the damage with a century stand, before they both fell to Yadav as they tried to up the tempo.

Huge roars

Babar was bowled between bat by a superb delivery before Zaman miscued a sweep to short fine leg.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya then took two wickets in two balls.

Mohammad Hafeez was caught at deep square leg before Shoaib Malik played on for his second successive duck -- a wicket greeted with huge roars by the massed ranks of India fans in a capacity crowd, with an estimated one billion watching on television.

Earlier, Kohli became the quickest player to 11,000 one-day international runs, getting there in 222nd innings compared to compatriot Sachin Tendulkar's previous record of 276 innings.

Meanwhile, Pakistan left-arm quick Mohammad Amir continued his fine form with 3-47 despite two early warnings for running on the pitch.

But not even Amir could stop Sharma and KL Rahul (57) marking their first ODI match as a opening duo with a stand of 136.

Sharma went to fifty with a six over long-on and a cut four off successive deliveries from recalled leg-spinner Shadab Khan.

His single off Shadab saw Sharma to an 85-ball hundred including three sixes and nine fours.

But a quickfire stand of 98 with Kohli ended when Sharma, trying a needlessly extravagant scoop, flicked Hasan to short fine leg.

Kohli, 71 not out at the start of a 55-minute rain break, fell soon after the resumption when, trying to hook Amir, he 'walked' for a catch behind by wicket-keeper Sarfaraz despite replays appearing to show he didn't hit the ball.

Rohit Sharma scored his second hundred in three innings as India maintained their unbeaten record against Pakistan at the World Cup with an 89-run win under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method on Sunday.

Rohit Sharma stars in India's 89-run win over arch-rivals Pakistan in World Cup

West Indies captain Jason Holder says he accepts the underdogs status ahead of their World Cup match against Bangladesh on Monday but played down the significance of their recent run of poor results against the subcontinent side.

Bangladesh and West Indies have played each other nine times since the 2015 World Cup, and the Asian side has emerged victorious in seven occasions, including three wins in the tri-nation tournament held in Ireland last month.

"If you want to put us in the underdog category, fair enough," Holder told a news conference on Sunday.

"We've played them quite a bit in the past and they've got the better of us, but it's a different occasion and there's lots at stake, so we're all up for it.

"It's a challenge against Bangladesh, so we just want to get over them and move forward."

Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza hinted at targeting West Indies with his spin bowling options, despite the short boundaries at Taunton's County Ground.

The off-spin of Mehidy Hasan, who has five wickets in three matches so far in the tournament, could come in handy against a Windies top order packed with left-handers.

"It's a very important match for us, especially losing few points in the last three matches," Mashrafe said.

"I think our bowling has been fantastic against them in the last two-three series we played.

"Obviously the top five West Indies batsmen are left-handers, and Mehidy bowled against them really well too."

A defeat for West Indies or Bangladesh could further hamper their chances of making it to the semi-final stage of the tournament, with both teams currently locked at three points each in their four matches.

Pakistan legend Waqar Younis on Monday claimed India are superior to his former team because Virat Kohli's men intimidate their arch rivals.

Sarfaraz Ahmed's side were no match India, who cruised to an 89-run win via the DLS method in Sunday's World Cup clash in Manchester.

Indian opener Rohit Sharma led the demolition with his 140 off 113 deliveries to pile on 336 for five in 50 overs.

Pakistan could only muster 212-6 in their revised target of 302 in 40 overs in the rain-affected match.

Waqar believes Pakistan struggled to cope with the pressure put on them by India, who excel at team-play while his country rely too much on individuals.

"In the last few years, there's been a massive difference India and Pakistan - and again it showed at Old Trafford on Sunday," Waqar said.

"Pakistan are still trying to rely on talent alone, while with India it's all about teamwork. They all know their roles, and they execute them superbly.

"We had good sides in the 1990s, but now I think this India team intimidates Pakistan."

Sharma, who scored his second hundred of the competition, put on 136 runs for the opening wicket with KL Rahul to see off the initial threat from Pakistan quick Mohammad Amir.

The rest of the bowling lacked sting to cause any trouble to the strong Indian batting line up.

Rahul made a measured 57 while skipper Virat Kohli scored 77 off 65 deliveries.

"India have very classy batsmen, let's not forget. They wait for the bad ball, and didn't have to do much against the Pakistan attack given the inconsistency in the length," said Waqar.

"Mohammad Amir was the only one who created a bit of pressure by bowling a good length," the cricketer-turned-commentator said.

Waqar said that there is "no real space" for veteran paceman Wahab Riaz, who leaked 71 runs in his 10 overs for his one wicket, and called for the inclusion of promising teenage quick Mohammad Hasnain.

Pakistan intimidated by India's excellence: Waqar Younis

Shakib Al Hasan's brilliant century inspired Bangladesh's bid for the second highest successful run chase in World Cup history against the West Indies on Monday.

Needing 322 to claim their second win of the tournament, Bangladesh were powering towards victory as they repelled the West Indies' barrage of bouncers to reach 248-3 after 34 overs at Taunton.

Shakib was unbeaten with 13 fours in his 83-ball innings, while Liton Das was 47 not out from 41 deliveries.

Only once previously have Bangladesh managed 322 batting second, against Scotland in 2015, while the highest chase so far in this World Cup was New Zealand's 248 against Bangladesh.

But the Tigers had already posted 330 in the first innings of their win over South Africa earlier in the competition and they were well on course to make history against the West Indies.

Opener Tamim Iqbal paved the way in the chase with six fours in his 53-ball innings of 48 before being superbly run out by Sheldon Cottrell.

Tamim, who hit over 30 for the first time in the tournament, and Soumya Sarkar had taken the score to 50 in the ninth over.

But Soumya was dismissed for 29 when he scooped Andre Russell to Chris Gayle in the slips.

There were huge cheers from the Bangladesh fans around the ground when Shakib became just the second player to score 6,000 career ODI runs for the Tigers.

After reaching his fifth successive ODI 50, Shakib -- who scored 121 against England earlier in the tournament -- took command with a scintillating innings that climaxed when he stroked a boundary to reach his century.

Earlier, Shai Hope's 96 and the joint-fastest fifty of the tournament from Shimron Hetmyer helped them reach 321-8.

The Windies couldn't be contained in the second half of the innings as Hope laid the foundations for his country's fourth highest World Cup score with a resolute 121-ball innings.

Hitting around Hope, Evin Lewis made 70 from 67 balls before Hetmyer smashed 50 in 26 balls, featuring four fours and three sixes.

Quick-fire Hetmyer

It was the equal fastest 50 in this year's tournament and the third quickest by a West Indies batsman in World Cup history.

West Indies opener Gayle was expected to wreak havoc in the tournament, but the big-hitting 39-year-old has only managed scores of 50, 21 and 36.

Once again Gayle looked out of sorts and he went 12 balls without scoring before dangling his bat limply at Mohammad Saifuddin's seaming delivery on the 13th, with the edge held low down by wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim.

Lewis kept grinding away and reached his first World Cup fifty from 58 balls.

Lewis's partnership of 116 with Hope was the West Indies' first century stand of the World Cup.

A towering six from Nicholas Pooran off Mehidy Hasan Miraz left a hole in the roof of one of the Taunton stands.

But Pooran, on 25 from 30 balls, perished when he tried to slog-sweep Shakib and miscued to Soumya Sarkar at long-on.

The urgency was finally injected into the innings, Hetmyer followed Pooran's gung-ho example with a sublime display of hitting.

Blasting boundaries to all parts of the ground, Hetmyer passed 1,000 ODI runs in his 27th innings.

His flamboyant display was curtailed when he holed out off Mustafizur Rahman.

Skipper Jason Holder's 33 from 15 balls -- including four fours and two sixes -- filled in admirably for Hetmyer to ensure the Windies went past 300.

Bangladesh have had the upper hand against the West Indies in recent meetings, winning six of the last seven, including all three games in the Tri-nation series in Ireland last month.

Both the West Indies and Bangladesh have won one of their four group matches, with two defeats and one no result apiece.

Shakib ton anchors Bangladesh's World Cup run chase against West Indies

Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth says Virat Kohli side's are having a demoralising effect on their World Cup opponents.

India beat Pakistan by 89 runs via DLS method in Manchester on Sunday to extend their blistering start to the World Cup.

Two-time champions India, among the favourites to lift the World Cup along with England and Australia, have three wins and a no result from their four matches and look set for a semi-final place.

Srikkanth has been impressed by India's form and claims their powerful displays are torturing opponents in the same way the great West Indies' team of the 1970s used to have teams beaten mentally before the match even started.

"It is a little like England, at the moment everything seems to be going right (for India) and the fans should be very happy," Srikkanth said.

"This is starting to feel a little like the West Indian teams of the 1970s, where the opposition would start the game with a psychological disadvantage.

"Teams are worried about facing India and how they will cope with them, which immediately puts them on the back foot."

India underlined their current class against Pakistan on Sunday, with opener Rohit Sharma leading the charge with 140 in their total of 336-5.

'Responsible Rahul'

Pakistan could only manage 212-6 while chasing a revised target of 302 in 40 overs to go down without a fight.

"It felt like there was more pressure on Pakistan, who had built this up to be a huge game, whereas India and Rohit, in particular, were able to treat it like any other match," Srikkanth said.

"That is vital in an ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. You cannot put too much pressure on yourself because of who the opposition is."

Sharma's 136-run opening stand with KL Rahul, who scored a measured 57 after being slotted in as opener in place of the injured Shikhar Dhawan, stood out in the big win.

Srikkanth said the half-century from Rahul, who helped see off a threatening opening spell from paceman Mohammad Amir, should not be underestimated.

"Everyone knows how good a batsman Rohit Sharma is but for me the more important innings against Pakistan was from KL Rahul," Srikkanth said.

"Going into the game, the biggest question mark about this India team was how they would cope without Shikhar Dhawan (who remains with the squad under medical observation).

"The fact the top three all got runs, that Sharma and Rahul put on more than a hundred for the first wicket and that Virat Kohli got more runs, is huge for India going forward in the tournament."

Kohli made 77 off 65 deliveries, his innings laced with seven boundaries before being caught behind off Amir.

"Teams are worried about facing India and how they will cope with them, which immediately puts them on the back foot." Teams are worried about facing India like Lloyd's West Indies, says Srikkanth

England opener Jason Roy will miss at least two World Cup games due to a hamstring injury but captain Eoin Morgan is bullish about overcoming a back spasm and playing against Afghanistan.

Roy suffered a hamstring tear in Friday's win over West Indies and Morgan confirmed James Vince, who had a lengthy net session at Old Trafford on Monday, will replace the opener on Tuesday.

"I certainly believe Jason will play again in this tournament," Morgan told reporters.

"At the moment he's going to be assessed continuously over the course of the next week. He's out of the next two games. So we'll see how he pulls up after that."

Roy made a superb 153 against Bangladesh in Cardiff but his replacement as opener Joe Root impressed with an unbeaten century which sealed an eight-wicket win for the hosts.

The 26-year-old Roy will miss the matches against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka but Morgan is confident he will be back before the June 30 game against India.

"As we know with injuries, people respond differently to treatment and medication, so it's a matter of giving him enough time to allow him to get himself back into the tournament," Morgan said.

Morgan had better news about his own health after suffering the back spasm in the match against West Indies after which he delivered his news conference standing up.

"Yeah, drastically improved. I've had extensive treatment and medication the last two days, which have helped me no end," said the 32-year-old.

"I've had a small hit in the nets, and hopefully be fit to play in the morning. It will all depend on how I pull up but aiming to play tomorrow."

England are fourth in the table with six points from four matches and will be overwhelming favourites against bottom-placed Afghanistan who have lost all four games.

Morgan refused to be complacent, though, against a spin-heavy Afghanistan.

"It's probably their strongest component as a team. It's a challenge that we're going to have to overcome," Morgan said.

"Pretty much every time we play against an Asian team, that's the case.

"You look over at where they are practising. They are practising against quicks, and look over at our nets and we're practising against spin. That's just a challenge that both sides come up against."

World Cup: England get Eoin Morgan boost but Jason Roy to miss at least two games

Major takeaways from India's historic win over Pakistan in World Cup

Practising cover drives in shower is just one manifestation of Steve Smith's batting obsession but the Australian has assured his anxious team at the World Cup that he is not overdoing it.

The 30-yer-old has returned from a ball-tampering scandal with his hunger for runs intact as his three half-centuries in five innings would attest.

The 12-month absence has not diminished Smith's dedication to his craft which took the right-hander to the top of test batting rankings before his exile.

Assistant coach Ricky Ponting, 10 rooms down the hotel corridor, has heard him shadow practising in England and coach Justin Langer said Smith hones his cover drives in shower.

"I don't know how he's spying on me in the shower!" an amused Smith, who relishes long hours in the nets, told reporters.

"Yeah, I'm known to play a few shots here and there.

"I always have a bat in my room and Ricky was actually rooming about ten rooms up from me the other day and said, 'Were you batting at seven o'clock this morning?'

"He could hear me tapping on the ground.

"I said, 'Yeah, I was actually.'"

The team management has asked Smith to consider toning down his routine which may exhaust the top order bulwark who will play a key role in Australia's title defence.

Smith said nine years of international cricket had taught him when to relax.

"It's been spoken about a little bit, but I think at the same time you've got to trust people's preparation," he said.

"I've been around quite a while now and I've played a lot of cricket and you've got to trust the individual's preparation and what they are trying to do.

"It's one thing that's I guess learned with experience and I'm reasonably experienced now and I've learned a bit over the last couple of years to sometimes just take the foot off the pedal in the nets and save myself up a little bit."

Australia are seeking their fifth win in six matches when they take on Bangladesh at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
