Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was Wednesday brought in as cover for the injured Shikhar Dhawan in India's World Cup squad.

"Rishabh Pant is being flown in from India as cover at the request of the team management," a senior BCCI official currently in England told PTI.

Pant, whose omission from the original squad became a topic of heated debates given his stupendous form in the past one year, will reach England on Wednesday.

His arrival will be a day before India's game against New Zealand and he won't be considered a replacement till the time the team management takes a final call on Dhawan's availability for the rest of the tournament.

The 21-year-old is one of the most exciting players to have emerged in Indian cricket. He impressed with Test hundreds during the tours of England and Australia earlier and was in fine form during the IPL last month.

Several former players such as Sunil Gavaskar advocated for his inclusion in the squad if Dhawan fails to recover quickly enough for India. Dhawan is likely to be ruled out of two matches due to a suspected hairline fracture on his left thumb which he sustained during his match-winning hundred in the clash against Australia on Sunday.

"...Dhawan is presently under the observation of the BCCI medical team. The team management has decided that Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored," the Indian team said in a statement on Wednesday night.

"Dhawan sustained an injury on the back of his left hand in the region between the index finger and thumb...," it added.

As with the previous fixture at the County Ground a few days ago, inclement weather threatens to dominate Tuesday’s match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

The Sri Lankan team have been camped in Bristol since June 5, and have not had to take the field. On June 7, their match with Pakistan here was washed out without a ball bowled, which gave them one point. Coming after a loss to New Zealand and a narrow win over Afghanistan, Sri Lanka will be desperate to get any sort of match on Tuesday.

With the weather forecast looking bad for game day, even a T20 will do for both teams.

Over the last two years, in ODIs, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are level at 2-2. Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh’s skipper, did not choose to dwell on that a day before this match. For him, the talk about Bangladesh having beaten Bangladesh in the 2011 and 2015 World Cups amounted to zilch, because when the teams met last week his was on the wrong end of a heavy loss.

With two defeats in a row, Bangladesh are struggling to play catchup when it comes to the semi-finals. Mortaza spoke of how tough it is for the team to make it, because he expected to beat New Zealand. The situation is uphill for his team, and with the weather not looking promising the frustration could pile up on Bangladesh.

Match details

What: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh

When: Tuesday, June 11

Where: County Ground, Bristol

Weather: Rain is predicted all through a cold day, with a high of 14 degrees Celsius.

Team news

Sri Lanka

Jon Lewis, Sri Lanka’s batting coach, confirmed that fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep is out of this match after he dislocates a finger last week. This makes it likely that his place will go to Jeevan Mendis, the spin-bowling allrounder, considering there are no other pace options.

Lewis also clarified that Lahiru Thirimanne is fit for selection.

Sri Lanka likely XI: 1 Dimuth Karunaratne (capt), 2 Kusal Perera (wk), 3 Lahiru Thirimanne, 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Jeevan Mendis, 9 Isuru Udana, 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Lasith Malinga

Bangladesh

After the loss to England, Bangladesh need to rebound.

Pitch and conditions

The strip for this game is same as the one which was due to be played on in the last match. It remained covered on Monday on account of the rain around, so its anyone’s guess as to what lies beneath. Both teams trained under grey skies, before rain shortly before 3pm local time interrupted Sri Lanka’s training session and sent the players and coaches indoors.

Stats

Head to head in ODIs, Sri Lanka have won 36 of 45 ODIs against Bangladesh while losing seven. Two have been no results.

In two completed ODIs in Bristol, Sri Lanka have lost two.

Bangladesh won their only ODI here, against England in 2010.

Shakib Al Hasan needs 23 runs to become the second Bangladesh cricket, after Tamim Iqbal, to 6000 ODI runs.

Quotes

“I hope we will play a full match tomorrow. I think the team is fine. Yes, disappointing after two losses, but especially against New Zealand, but no, this sort of tournament, we knew that before the ending, you’re never sure, so still a lot of hope there. Boys really hungry to win matches, so team is fine. But again, expecting a full match.” – Mortaza

“It will be tough. Bangladesh have had a couple of decent results against Sri Lanka, but you know, this is a World Cup. The situation is very different. I think already, you’ve seen that maybe World Cup cricket isn’t the same as bilateral one-day tournaments. Yeah, no doubt at all that there’s a hell of a challenge ahead of us, but we also do have a lot of confidence in the players that we have in our dressing room and a lot of faith in them. So we are still confident.” – Lewis

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan sustained an injury on his left thumb during the team's World Cup match against holders Australia on Sunday but still went on to complete his 17th one-day international century.

Dhawan, however, played no further part in the match after his dismissal, with substitute Ravindra Jadeja taking the field in his place as India comfortably defended their total of 352 for five to complete a 36-run victory.

World Cup: BCCI releases official statement on Shikhar Dhawan's thumb injury

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan sustained an injury on his left thumb during the team's World Cup match against holders Australia on Sunday following which, his participation in remaining matches is doubtful.

Dhawan is being assessed but the media reports have suggested that the 33-year-old has fractured his thumb.

Although, the official statement from India's cricket board is still awaited which will reveal whether Dhawan will play in the remainder of the tournament.

If the southpaw is ruled out of the entire tournament, designated standbys Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu are in contention to replace him.

Also, the team management might push for Mumbai batsman and India A captain Shreyas Iyer as he is a specialist number four batsman.

It is learnt that Pant, whose omission from the original squad kicked up quite a storm given his brilliant form in the past one year, might be flown in as a cover, not a replacement.

Former England's cricketer Kevin Pietersen tweeted on Dhawan's suspected ouster, he wrote, "Shikha OUT the World Cup. Get Pant on the plane ASAP. KL Rahul to open and Pant at number 4."

Amid all this, Twitter users have come up with some funny memes as Pant is likely ahead of other names in the race to get a call-up.

KL Rahul to open and Pant at number 4." Amid all this, Twitter users have come up with some funny memes as Pant is likely ahead of other names in the race to get a call-up. Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan injured his left thumb and it is expected that he will miss India's next two Cricket World Cup matches against New Zealand and Pakistan, however, there is no official statement yet from India's cricket board.

Dhawan sustained an injury while playing against Australia on Sunday at the Oval after being hit on the thumb by a rising delivery from pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile. He went onto play a match-winning knock of 117 runs against the Aaron Finch-led side, which helped India secure a 36-run victory. Dhawan didn't take the field due to the injury during the match and Ravindra Jadeja fielded in his place for the entire 50 overs.

He underwent scans here in which the fracture came to light.

As per the latest update, Dhawan has gone to Leeds for further assessment and he is being assessed by the Indian team's physio Patrick Farhart. An update will be provided after finishing the process, wrote the CricketCountry website.

Although, a BCCI source told PTI that Dhawan has sustained a fracture and it might take a month for him to fully recover. The World Cup, which started May 30, ends on July 14.

The ICC rules and regulation say that a team will get a replacement only if the player is sidelined for the entire tournament.

World Cup: Lasith Malinga to fly back home after Bangladesh match due to personal reasons

Kagiso Rabada believes South Africa must put their off-field problems to one side as they look to revive their World Cup campaign against the West Indies at Southampton on Monday.

A tough opening week in the round-robin group phase has left the Proteas with little margin for error after three straight defeats by England, Bangladesh and India left their semi-final hopes hanging by a thread.

South Africa also saw senior fast bowler Dale Steyn ruled out of the World Cup through injury without bowling a ball.

Meanwhile, a row has broken out over whether South Africa's selectors were right to reject star AB de Villiers's offer to come out of international retirement for the World Cup, with some arguing the star batsman had simply left it too late to make himself available.

"There's just been a lot happening off the field and we are just looking to clear that out of our heads," said Rabada, the leader of the Proteas' attack in Steyn's absence.

"But it has been enjoyable," added Rabada, whose fellow quick Lungi Ngidi is an injury doubt for Monday's match.

"It's exciting. This is what you want. It has been enjoyable but it has come with its challenges in terms of our team."

While yet to hit top gear himself at the World Cup, Rabada has been encouraged by the performances so far of fellow fast bowlers such as England's Jofra Archer, Australia's Mitchell Starc and the West Indies' Oshane Thomas.

"They are all phenomenal bowlers. I enjoy watching other bowlers bowl. It's nice to see other people do well, but not against us," said Rabada jokingly.

"We all have our aspirations. We want to achieve certain goals. I don't think it puts any pressure on me (to perform).

"I know exactly what I want to get out of the game. When you admire other sportsmen, it can inspire you."

World Cup: Had a point to prove against Australia, says Virat Kohli

India captain Virat Kohli wants cricket's authorities to look into the issue of cricket bails not being knocked off by the ball thanks to new technology.

Australia opener David Warner became the fifth batsman at the World Cup to get an unexpected reprieve after he dragged a ball on to his stump but the impact failed to dislodge the zing bails in Sunday's match against India.

The southpaw was on one when he inside-edged a Jasprit Bumrah delivery on to his leg stump but much to his delight the bails did not come off.

"I haven't seen that happen so many times in the past," Kohli told reporters at a briefing.

"I'm sure no team would like seeing stuff like that when you actually bowl a good ball and then you don't get the guy out, the ball hits the stump and the lights don't come on, or the lights come on and the bail comes back on to the stump."

Zing bails –- which contain lights that flash when the ball strikes the wicket –- have been a sore point in the current World Cup.

South Africa's Quinton de Kock, Sri Lankan Dimuth Karunaratne, West Indian Chris Gayle and Mohammad Saifuddin of Bangladesh have already enjoyed similar luck at this World Cup but several former players felt it was harsh on the bowlers.

"This can’t keep happening with the bails!!! Hard enough being a bowler nowadays... needs changing," tweeted former England captain Nasser Hussain.

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar also took to Twitter to express his dismay.

"What's going on?? In my entire life, I have not seen five instances like this, let alone in the space of 10 days or a tournament," he wrote.

On the eve of the match against India, Australia captain Aaron Finch said the zing bails appeared to need a bigger impact to be dislodged from their grooves.

"The bails seem to be a lot heavier, so it does take a bit of force," he said on Saturday, pointing to similar cases during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 competition.

"I've seen it a handful of times now in IPL and Big Bash where the ball rolls back on to the stumps, where the bails traditionally one of them will pop off.

India captain Virat Kohli wants cricket's authorities to look into the issue of cricket bails not being knocked off by the ball thanks to new technology. "I'm sure no team would like seeing stuff like that when you actually bowl a good ball and then you don't get the guy out, the ball hits the stump and the lights don't come on, or the lights come on and the bail comes back on to the stump." Zing bails –- which contain lights that flash when the ball strikes the wicket –- have been a sore point in the current World Cup. "I think it's just one of those things that you are aware of that when you're on the right side of it, you are aware of it a bit easier than when you're not."

World Cup: Virat Kohli unhappy with 'zing' bails after David Warner reprieve

Afghanistan's regular wicket-keeper Mohammad Shahzad was ruled out of the Cricket World Cup 2019 citing a knee injury.

Shahzad, however, has blamed the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for his withdrawal from the team's squad.

"My injury wasn't that severe. It was not an injury that required 2-3 months of recovery time. The board is to be blamed for my withdrawal from the Afghanistan squad. I was feeling good, they did not mention anything to me before the replacement," Shahzad told ANI.

Shahzad was training ahead of the New Zealand game when he got the news of his withdrawal. He said even his teammates were not aware of the decision.

He was replaced by Ikram Ali Khil for the New Zeland game.

"I don't know why the board officials don't like me. I am a straight forward person and this attitude is not liked by many in the board," he added.

But ACB chief executive Asadullah Khan has claimed otherwise in media reports.

"What he is saying is completely wrong. A proper medical report to the ICC was submitted and then only his replacement was announced. The team could not have fielded an unfit player. I understand he is upset at not being part of World Cup anymore but the team could not have compromised on his fitness," he said.

Shahzad, on the other hand, asked ICC to look into this issue and not release media reports about injuries without taking stock of the full injury update.

"Even ICC needs to pay attention to the matter. They issue reports and then our board withdraws us from the squad, the matter clearly needs to be looked into," Shahzad said.

Shahzad has failed to score runs and made several mistakes while keeping.

Afghanistan has so far lost its three opening matches - against Australia, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand - in the ongoing World Cup.

Back-to-back defeats may have jeopardised Bangladesh's prospects of reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup but the task is merely difficult and not impossible, captain Mashrafe Mortaza said ahead of Tuesday's contest against Sri Lanka.

The 2015 quarter-finalists shocked South Africa in their tournament opener but defeats by New Zealand and England brought them down to earth.

"It's not easy, especially the conditions," the all-rounder told reporters ahead of their match against a Sri Lankan side who have been far from convincing themselves.

"Obviously we'd love to see ourselves in the semis, but again, the calculation is right now a lot, lot difficult.

"If we could manage to win one of those matches against New Zealand or England, it could have been a lot easier.

"At the moment, it looks very difficult but I say it's possible, it's very much possible. We have to make sure that we come back to the winning track and then have a look what happens next."

Sri Lanka were thumped by New Zealand but the 1996 champions edged out Afghanistan and claimed a point from their washed out match against 1992 winners Pakistan. They lie one point ahead of Bangladesh in the 10-team standings.

Mashrafe felt the two-wicket loss against New Zealand has intensified pressure on the team but was optimistic they would respond positively.

"After beating South Africa, our confidence level was high that we can beat New Zealand but we couldn't," he said.

"Pressure will be there in every match but at the same time I have to say that we have to cope with that pressure and make sure we deliver.

"A few things can go out of plan but we have to make sure that at the end of the day, we are on the winning side."

The World Cup match between South Africa and the West Indies was abandoned on Monday after persistent heavy rain in Southampton, with both sides earning a point each.

Earlier, West Indies paceman Sheldon Cottrell reduced Faf du Plessis's team to 29 for two before rain stopped play.

"Very disappointing, but you can't control the weather. We didn't get close to a game," Du Plessis said.

The West Indies are back in Southampton on Friday to play England and skipper Jason Holder hopes all-rounder Andre Russell will be fit to face the hosts after missing Monday's game with a knee injury.

"We are hoping he pulls up alright. I guess it is a blessing this game is over and we can look forward to the game against England," Holder said.

South Africa, desperately needing a win after defeats in their first three matches of the tournament in England and Wales, lost the toss and were put in to bat under threatening skies.

They were quickly in trouble, with Hashim Amla edging Cottrell to Chris Gayle at slip for just six, sparking the bowler's trademark celebration featuring a short march and salute.

That brought Aiden Markram to the wicket but he had only made five when he tickled a Cottrell delivery down the legside and wicketkeeper Shai Hope completed the catch to leave South Africa in deep trouble at 28-2 in the seventh over.

In the following over, delivered by Oshane Thomas, rain stopped play and the covers came on.

The West Indies are fifth in the World Cup table with three points after three matches, while South Africa are second from bottom after four games, leaving their hopes of making the semi-finals hanging by a thread.

South Africa face Afghanistan at Cardiff on Saturday and Du Plessis admitted his team were in need of a morale-boosting win against the minnows.

"Everyone should be fit for the next game. We are in a bad position but it's our own fault," he said.

"We haven't played our best cricket so far and we need a solid performance to get the team's confidence up."

South Africa versus West Indies World Cup match rained off

India made quite a statement with their clinical victory against holders Australia but captain Virat Kohli is not entertaining any premature thoughts or taking a place in the semi-finals of the World Cup for granted.

India have won both ways in their first two matches, expertly pulling off a chase in their tournament opener against South Africa before astutely defending a 350-plus total against Australia.

They ticked almost every box in Sunday's mouth-watering clash at the Oval where Kohli and his top order colleagues fired in unison, their bowlers troubled Australian batsmen, and they looked pretty sharp on the field too.

Kohli was naturally pleased with the strong start but dismissed suggestions that India were now cruising to the last four.

"No, I think in my opinion it's too early to decide that," the 30-year-old said.

"I think after about six games we'll be in a better position to know where we stand in the tournament, where we stand in the table, but we couldn't have asked for a better start against two strong sides."

Currently ranked second in ODI, India began their World Cup campaign after everyone else against a South African side playing their third match on Wednesday.

They face New Zealand and Pakistan in their next two matches and take on hosts England at Edgbaston on June 30.

"The good thing is we're playing all strong sides up front, so as I mentioned in Mumbai before we left, if we do well in the first phase, we'll be in a better position to reach the semi-finals," Kohli said.

"From that point of view, we have to be at the best, at the top of our game, and precisely what we've done in the two games, and that's why we've won both."

Hardik Pandya also gave a good account of his pinch-hitting ability against Australia when the all-rounder, promoted ahead of the likes of KL Rahul and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, smashed 48 off 27 balls to help India past the 300-mark.

"In the past, sometimes he tried too hard, but I think what this IPL (Indian Premier League) has done for his batting is that he knows that he can clear the boundary whenever he wants," Kohli said.

"So he's not trying to over-hit the ball and he's just timing the ball so well.

"When you know that you can clear the boundary and you necessarily don't need to make anything happen, the bowler is under pressure because he needs to get it right.

"That's the most amazing place to be in, and I think he's going through that."

Former Australian skipper Steve Smith was subjected to audible boos, jeers and chants of "cheat" from a group of Indian fans during India vs Australia World Cup match on June 9.

Steve Smith and David Warner, recently completed bans for ball-tampering, have been given a hostile reception by the crowd in England.

For Kohli, if someone has shown repentance then others should let go of the baggage and move on.

England defeated Bangladesh in the Match 12 of Cricket World Cup 2019 on Saturday at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens.

Shakib Al Hasan's century went in vain as Bangladesh failed to reach the massive 387 run-target as the team was all-out for 280.

Earlier, a superb 153 from Jason Roy and a big-hitting 64 from Jos Buttler fired England to their highest ever Cricket World Cup total as they posted 386-6 in their third match at this year's tournament.

Put into bat in blustery conditions, Jonny Bairstow and Roy got England off to an impressive start with just the second-century opening partnership of the World Cup so far, before Bairstow (51) fell to a brilliant catch from Mehidy Hasan.

Roy went on to reach his ninth ODI hundred off 92 balls as England continued to pile on the runs, before smashing three sixes in a row to pass 150, only to be caught by Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza the very next ball in the 35th over.

Buttler moved up the order to keep England in the attacking ascendancy, then fired the joint-fastest half-century at the World Cup before being caught on the boundary chasing another six.

Captain Eoin Morgan (35) was next to fall off the bowling of Mehidy -- the pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers with figures of 2-67 from his 10 overs -- before Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett plundered 45 runs off the final 17 balls to see England post the seventh highest World Cup total ever.

England defeated Bangladesh in the Match 12 of Cricket World Cup 2019 on Saturday at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens. Shakib Al Hasan's century went in vain as Bangladesh failed to reach the massive 387 run-target as the team was all-out for 280.

And that's that. Archer and Stokes take three wickets each to help England to a resounding 106-run win, but this game will most likely be remembered for Jason Roy's special knock of 153. #ENGvBAN SCORECARD 👇 https://t.co/AmBAfhSMi9 pic.twitter.com/2NeBz0d001 — Cricket World Cup (@cricketworldcup) June 8, 2019 × Buttler moved up the order to keep England in the attacking ascendancy, then fired the joint-fastest half-century at the World Cup before being caught on the boundary chasing another six. India's MS Dhoni took the field without a controversial dagger logo on his wicketkeeping gloves in Sunday's World Cup game against Australia after being ordered to remove the symbol by cricket's governing body.

Dhoni's gloves in the opening game against South Africa bore an apparent military insignia that breached rules laid down by the International Cricket Council.

But a different pair of gloves appeared to conform with ICC regulations when India fielded after making 352 for five batting first against world champions Australia at the Oval.

The ICC turned down a request by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to allow Dhoni to sport the symbol that gained widespread attention on television and on social media in India, with #DhoniKeepTheGlove trending on Twitter.

According to the World Cup clothing and equipment regulations manual, only two manufacturer identifications can be sported on the back of each glove.

Also, any logos should not have any political or racial connotations.

Dhoni is an honorary lieutenant colonel in India's Parachute Regiment.

In March, the India team wore camouflage-style caps provided by Dhoni during a one-day game against Australia as a tribute to India's armed forces after 40 troops were killed in a suicide bomb attack in Kashmir.

The ICC has previously ruled against players making political statements and in 2104 the global governing body banned England all-rounder Moeen Ali from wearing wristbands saying "Save Gaza" and "Free Palestine".

World Cup: MS Dhoni removes dagger logo from keeping gloves

The International Cricket Council has not only rejected Mahendra Singh Dhoni's request for wearing keeping gloves which had a dagger insignia but also refused West Indies opener Chris Gayle permission to use 'Universe Boss' logo on his bat.

In both cases, the ICC cited equipment regulation violation.

Gayle, a self-proclaimed 'Universe Boss', had requested the ICC to allow him to use it for his bat branding but he was informed that he can't use any clothing or sporting equipment for personal messages.

"ICC couldn't have made an exception for Dhoni as no personal messages are allowed on equipment. Gayle wanted it but when he was refused permission, he accepted it and moved on," a source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Talking about Dhoni, the official said, "It is not about military symbolism. It is about a simple rule that no personal messages are allowed. If ICC did not make an exception for Gayle, then how come they would make it for Dhoni."

It has also been learnt that even innocuous messages or emojis are not allowed on equipment.

"Tomorrow, Moeen Ali will again request for wearing a 'Free Palestine' wristband which is a direct political message. We did not allow it then and we won't allow it now. You won't be even allowed to have a word like 'love' embossed on the equipment," the source added.

The ICC allowed the Indian team to wear camouflage caps recently during an international match against Australia because it was a bilateral series.

"A formal request was made by the BCCI as they wanted to use the match as a fund-raiser for the victims of the Pulwama terror attack. In bilateral series, ICC allows teams to do charity. Just like the 'Pink Test' in Australia for the Jane McGrath foundation that works on breast cancer awareness,? the source further added.

It has been learnt that Dhoni is yet to get any official reprimand from the ICC for the South Africa game, during which his green gloves had dagger insignia.

As per rules, if he sports the insignia again in any of the matches, he would first be warned and then face financial penalties of 25, 50 and 75 per cent of match fees for every transgression.

Australian opener David Warner is meticulously preparing for the tougher battles ahead in the World Cup by using a new device on his bat. It is a sensor that stores important data like backlift angle and maximum bat speed.

ICC had approved the usage of bat sensor back in 2017 but none of the international batsmen have used it in matches.

A Bengaluru based company has introduced its version of sensor cap named 'Bat Sense' which Warner has been using in practice to collate data to counter pacers.

The sensor chip is fixed on the top of bat handle. Till the time batsman is batting, the data generated on the chip gets stored in a mobile app through 'cloud storage'.

The technical data consists of aspects such as power index, maximum bat speed, rotational angle of the wrists, backlift angle, bat start angle (whether the bat is coming straight or from first slip angle).

Warner's bat sensor has revealed some interesting insights about how he is doing. His bat speed is believed to be 79 kmph.

"I am not sure whether Warner would use the bat with sensor in a match situation but he has been using it in practice sessions," Atul Srivastava, whose company has a tie-up with the ICC, told PTI.

The data collected could prove to be useful for professional players as they will have a reference point, said former Test wicketkeeper and cricket analyst Deep Dasgupta.

"Earlier, the coaches would depend on their natural instinct about angle of backlift or bat speed or the distance between the bat and body, impact. I believe if accurate data can help coaches in guiding their players, then why not," said Dasgupta, who himself is associated with the project, told PTI.

At the moment, the bat sensor usage is at a nascent stage where collating data is the primary objective.
"The data that will be available is of primary nature. Once a large chunk of data is collected across a cross-section of players, it can be suitably processed by the coaches. Then players can accordingly change their game as per the available data," said Dasgupta.

As of now, none of the current India players are using the bat sensor, which could well be another game-changer in the near future.

Kane Williamson led by example as the New Zealand captain's 79 not out guided his side to a seven-wicket win over Afghanistan that maintained their 100 percent start to the World Cup on Saturday.

Williamson was New Zealand's top scorer with a 99-ball innings containing nine fours after Jimmy Neesham took career-best one-day figures of 5-31 to dismiss Afghanistan for 172 at Taunton.

New Zealand's third successive victory kept them on course to make the semi-finals in the 10-team tournament, while minnows Afghanistan have lost all three of their matches.

Earlier, New Zealand dismissed Afghanistan for 172 in Saturday's World Cup match at Taunton.

Neesham turned the game in New Zealand's favour with his impressive spell after Afghanistan briefly threatened to rock the Black Caps.

Put in to bat by New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, Afghanistan openers Hazratullah Zazai and Noor Ali Zadran blasted a quickfire 66 for the first wicket.

But pace bowler Neesham, who had struggled in New Zealand's first two matches, finally found his rhythm despite two rain interruptions.

New Zealand, World Cup runners-up in 2015, have to make 173 from their 50 overs to extend their unbeaten start to three matches.

Hashmatullah Shahidi (59) top-scored for Afghanistan, who are fighting to avoid a third successive defeat.

With Mohammad Shahzad ruled out for the rest of the tournament due to a knee injury, the onus was on Hazratullah to anchor the Afghanistan innings and he made a flying start with three fours off Matthew Henry's opening over of the match.

On the small west country ground, the free-hitting Afghanistan's openers were doing their best to rattle New Zealand as they reached 66 in the 11th over.

But Neesham made the crucial breakthrough when Hazratullah went for one big shot too many, the left-hander hitting to Colin Munro at deep cover to depart for 34.

New Zealand had two wickets in the space of three balls as Noor Ali (31) was strangled down the leg side by fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, who would finish with four wickets.

Afghanistan lost their third wicket with the score still on 66 when Rahmat Shah was dismissed for a duck after a leading edge off Neesham was held by Martin Guptill.

When Gulbadin Naib failed with a review attempt to overturn his edge behind off Neesham, Afghanistan had lost four wickets for four runs in 21 deliveries.

Play was halted due to rain with the score on 84-4 and although the teams returned when the weather relented 25 minutes later, another shower forced them off just two overs later.

After the rain at last disappeared, Neesham shattered Afghanistan's resistance when he had both Mohammad Nabi and Najibullah Zadran caught behind to leave them 109-6 and earn his first five-wicket haul in ODIs.

By the time Rashid Khan was bowled when a Ferguson bouncer hit his helmet and cannoned onto the stumps, it was clear that aggressive New Zealand had imposed their will.

India versus Pakistan cricket rivalry is usually termed as one of the greatest in the international sporting arena, which is highly emotionally charged.

The significance of India vs Pakistan World Cup match can be understood by the fact that in the previous edition, over one billion viewers watched the Indo-Pak contest worldwide. It had a 14.8 per cent TV rating with a live reach of 288 million.

During the major ICC events, both the team are under the immense pressure of winning the match to steer clear of the repercussions as losing leads to extreme reactions from fans in both the countries.

When it comes to stats, India and Pakistan have played a total of 131 matches. Pakistan dominate the overall tally by winning 73 matches while India won 54. Although, in the World Cup, it is India who dominated Pakistan by a great record of winning all the six games played so far.

The stressful history between the two nations pushes the fans to take extreme measures while celebrating the win and after a defeat, some disruptions often occur.

After 2008 Mumbai blasts, India refused to play the bilateral series against the arch-rivals.

The question arises, is it worth it and why can't they just move on?

India vs Pakistan is overhyped and when it comes to real cricket, the actual action, India vs Australia is a real deal.

In the past five World Cup tournaments, India are the only team to have denied the Australians the trophy, which was in 2011 when India were the champions.

Both the teams have played a total of 136 ODI matches, Australia won 77 matches and India emerged victorious on 49 occasions.

While in the World Cup, Aussies dominated India by defeating the 'Men in Blue' in eight of 11 games played.

In the ongoing edition of World Cup, which is underway in England and Wales, both the teams had a winning start.

Now, they will look to continue the momentum when they take on each other on June 9 in one of the most anticipated battles in this edition.

Australia have enjoyed supremacy in cricket for more than a decade by winning World Cup three consecutive times and overall, they have won it five times.

However, they suffered a torrid year since Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were banned for ball-tampering, an incident that prompted a national outcry.

I grew up in a time when Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee were world's best bowlers but even that time, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Virendra Sehwag were threats to them.

Now in modern times, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are posing threat to Australian Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

While David Warner and Aaron Finch are in form to make the job difficult for India's Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

From batting to bowling, from fielding to sledging, the sides give a huge competition to each other.

Their current teams are a mix of young talents with experienced players and both the captains, Kohli and Finch, know weaknesses of each other's squad as they have played ten ODI including home and away series recently.

It will be interesting to see which captain will use it in a better way.

Hungry for redemption, the Aussie will look to dominate the contest but with their current form, both the teams surely build up towards an exciting contest in this World Cup.

Indo-Pak cricket rivalry overhyped, India vs Australia is the real deal

Carlos Brathwaite said the West Indies were on the wrong end of too much poor umpiring following a 15-run World Cup defeat by champions Australia as Michael Holding slammed an "atrocious" display by the match officials.

West Indies opener Chris Gayle and captain Jason Holder were both twice given out on the field at Trent Bridge on Thursday but, on both sets of occasions, saw their decision to review vindicated by the third umpire.

The mood of the Caribbean side was not helped when standing umpire Chris Gaffaney missed a Mitchell Starc no-ball the delivery before the left-arm quick dismissed Gayle for 21.

Had the New Zealand official called a no-ball, the next delivery would have been a free hit from which the veteran opener could not have been dismissed.

Brathwaite accepted Gaffaney and Sri Lanka's Ruchira Palliyaguruge were doing their best, but he made no attempt to hide his annoyance after the West Indies fell short chasing a target of 289 in Nottingham.

"I don't know if I'll be fined for saying it but I just think that the umpiring was a bit frustrating," Brathwaite told reporters.

"Even when we were bowling we thought a few balls close to head height were called wides."

"And obviously three decisions...as far as I can remember being dodgy, it was frustrating and sent ripples through the dressing room," the all-rounder added.

"To lose Chris in a chase of 280, who can probably get 180 of them himself obviously, broke the start that we wanted to have.

"But the umpires do their job, they try to do it to the best of their ability, we as players go out there to do our job as well, so there was no confrontation between the players and the umpires."

Gaffaney raised his finger twice in three balls to gove Gayle while Palliyaguruge was two-times over-ruled by replays after raising his finger against Holder.

Brathwaite made it clear the decisions had not been the key reason why the West Indies had lost, but said they were part of a concerning pattern.

"I just think I'd like that for West Indies, we don't have to use all our reviews and that some of the other teams get a chance to use theirs because, every time we get hit on our pad, the finger goes up," he said.

"When we hit the opposition on their pad, the finger stays down. So we have to use our reviews and it's always missing and then we have to use our reviews when we're batting as well and it's always clipping.

"I'm not a technology person, I don't know why that happens, I can just say what I have seen happen over the past few years."

Meanwhile, Holding, commentating on television, was scathing about the "weak" officiating on show at Nottinghamshire's headquarters.

"The umpiring in this game has been atrocious," said Holding, one of cricket's all-time leading fast bowlers.

The 65-year-old Jamaican added Gaffaney and Palliyaguruge had caved into pressure created by prolonged Australia appeals.

"For one, even when I was playing and you were not as strict as they are now, you were allowed one appeal," recalled Holding, who infamously kicked down the stumps during a 1979/80 Test in Dunedin after his appeal to have New Zealand's John Parker caught behind was rejected by umpire Fred Goodall.

"You don't appeal two, three, four times to the umpire. They are being intimidated which means they are weak.

"This has been an atrocious bit of umpiring by both (Gaffaney and Palliyaguruge)."

Umpiring decisions sent ripples through West Indies dressing room: Brathwaite after Australia defeat

Nathan Coulter-Nile's record-breaking innings laid the platform for Australia's 15-run victory over the West Indies on Thursday as the World Cup holders bounced back from a top-order collapse to make it two successive wins.

Australia were in dire straits at 38 for four after the West Indies fast bowlers proved too hot to handle early on at Trent Bridge.

But Coulter-Nile's career-best 92 -- the highest score by any number eight batsman or lower in a World Cup -- helped take them to 288 all out.

He carried on a recovery started by former skipper Steve Smith (73), with the pair bailing Australia out in a stand of 102 in 89 balls.

West Indies, despite a painstaking 68 from opener Shai Hope and 51 from captain Jason Holder finished on 273 for nine.

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc did the bulk of the damage with five for 46 -- the first five-wicket haul of this World Cup -- including a late burst of four for two in 11 balls -- as Australia followed up their seven-wicket win over minnows Afghanistan.

The West Indies had bounced out Pakistan for just 105 when winning their tournament opener at Trent Bridge last week and adopted similar tactics against Australia after Holder won the toss.

Oshane Thomas had Australia captain Aaron Finch (six) caught before opening partner David Warner (three) was held at backward point off Sheldon Cottrell -- a wicket that saw the left-arm quick, still a member of the Jamaica Defence Force, celebrate with his trademark salute.

Australia were now 26 for two, with boos ringing out as Warner walked off and Smith walked on -- a now familiar response by crowds in England to the pair having only recently returned from year-long bans for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

Coulter-Nile cashes in

Smith had a lucky break on 26 when he top-edged a hook off Holder only for Cottrell at long leg to slip as he eyed a catch.

His patient innings ended when he flicked Thomas high towards deep backward square only for Cottrell, skirting the boundary, to grab the ball one-handed, throw it back into the field of play as he stepped over the rope -- thereby avoiding a six -- and complete a sensational catch.

But Coulter-Nile cashed in as he surpassed his previous international best of 34.

His blistering assault off 60 balls featuring eight fours and four sixes also saw him beat former Zimbabwe international Heath Streak's previous World Cup best by a No 8 of 72 before, in sight of a hundred, he drove Carlos Brathwaite to Holder at long-off.

In the West Indies' run-chase, big-hitting opener Chris Gayle, having overturned two 'out' decisions, was eventually lbw to Starc for 21.

But Hope, biding his time, completed a 76-ball fifty.

Holder who overturned decisions against him on seven and 22, upped the tempo with several well-struck boundaries.

West Indies, however, suffered a huge setback when Hope chipped a Pat Cummins slower ball to mid-on.

Russell then got off the mark with a huge straight six off leg-spinner Adam Zampa that took the West Indies to 200 before he was well caught over the shoulder by Glenn Maxwell.

But as long as Holder was there the West Indies still had a chance.

He completed a run-a-ball fifty but trying to take on Starc, rather than wait to attack Australia's lesser bowlers, he was caught at short fine leg as the West Indies' hopes faded.

World Cup: Nathan Coulter-Nile, Mitchell Starc guide Australia's win over West Indies

For two teams coming off rejuvenating victories, match number 11 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 could end up a dampener.

The forecast for Bristol on Friday (June 7) is for heavy rain all through the day. At 10:30 am local time, when this match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is due to begin, the chance of rain is predicted for 80 per cent. It is not a situation either team will fancy, for a washed out game could end up hurting them in the back end of the tournament.

Locals reckon the rain won’t let up, so we could all be in for a frustrating day.

Sri Lanka have never beaten Pakistan in a World Cup match, but Dimuth Karunaratne is confident that his team can become the first to do so. After losing to New Zealand by ten wickets, Sri Lanka overcame a scare against Afghanistan to find some momentum, which Karunaratne said instilled a greater sense of belief in the squad.

Up against the most unpredictable team in the sport, Sri Lanka are ready for a fightback. In this World Cup, Pakistan were bowled out for 105 by West Indies and then made 348 to beat England. What Pakistan team turns up in their third match remains to be seen.

Twenty years separated Pakistan’s only two ODI matches in Bristol. During the 1999 World Cup, they beat West Indies here. Last month, they lost here to England by six wickets despite scoring 358.

Team news

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka trained unbroken during the morning, under mostly grey skies, but the rain did not interrupt their practice session. Each member of the team practised, with Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis, in particular, getting more throw-downs. It was not surprising, given their poor scores in the World Cup.

Sri Lanka are not expected to make any changes to their last XI, with Karunaratne putting faith in the batsmen.

Sri Lanka likely XI: 1 Dimuth Karunarate, 2 Kusal Perera (wk), 3 Lahiru Thirimanne, 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Nuwan Pradeep

Pakistan’s practice session was briefly delayed by rain. Sarfaraz Ahmed, the skipper, was the first to turn up on the ground and ran a couple laps on his own. The team appeared in good spirits as it began a game of football and the mood remained upbeat during fielding, batting and bowling practice.

Pakistan likely XI: 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam, 4 Mohammad Hafeez, 5 Sarfaraz Ahme (capt/wk), 6 Asif Ali, 7 Shoaib Malik, 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Hasan Ali, 10 Wahab Riaz, 11 Mohammad Amir

Quotes

“I definitely do sense quite a bit of confidence, especially, like, in the meeting we had this morning. Since we have won, well it took off a lot of the pressure definitely, having gone through those string of defeats. Psychologically, that lifts a huge weight from their shoulders.” – Grant Flower, Pakistan batting coach

“We just need a win. It always give us the confidence if you get a win, any team, with any team, that is what we want. Finally, we got that. After that, we did really good things in that particular match, and also we have some parts to learn more, many things about the batting.” – Dimuth Karunaratne

Cricket World Cup 2019: Bristol rain threatens to dampen upbeat Pakistan and Sri Lanka fixture

Mahendra Singh Dhoni sporting an Army insignia on his glove during the India-South Africa clash was well appreciated by his fans but the International Cricket Council on Thursday requested the BCCI to have the badge removed, saying it is against its regulations.

Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager - Strategic Communications, told PTI that the apex body has requested the Indian cricket board to have the sign removed. India's next game is against Australia on Sunday.

"It is against the regulations and we have requested it is removed," Furlong told PTI.

When asked if Dhoni, who is an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment of Territorial Army, could be penalised for the breach of an ICC regulation, she added, "For first breach no, just a request to remove".

Dhoni's love for the Indian Army is well known. During the opening World Cup fixture against South Africa in Southampton on Wednesday, Dhoni's gloves attracted special attention when the TV cameras zoomed in.

The regimental dagger insignia of the para forces was embossed on his green wicket-keeping gloves.

While there is a possibility that Dhoni may have worn these gloves with the dagger insignia earlier also, it did get a lot of traction on social media with fans loving his unique way of paying tribute to the armed forces.

Former South African cricketer AB de Villers has reacted on Faf du Plessis-led team's disappointing start in the Cricket World Cup 2019, which is going on in England and Wales. South Africa were beaten by six wickets by India on Wednesday and the defeart left the side with a massive task if they are to get through to the semi-finals. The team was beaten in the tournament opener by England on Thursday and were then upset by Bangladesh on Sunday. Former South African skipper took to Twitter and extended his support for the team, he wrote, "All that's important is that we should all focus on supporting the team at the World Cup." "There is a long way to go and I believe the boys can still go all the way #ProteaFire," ABD added. All that’s important is that we should all focus on supporting the team at the World Cup. AB de Villiers reacts on South Africa's poor start in World Cup

Cricket South Africa selection convenor Linda Zondi said on Thursday they have no regrets in turning down an approach from retired batsman AB de Villiers to make himself available for the Cricket World Cup in England.

South Africa have lost all three of their games at the tournament, largely because of a soft middle-order that has missed the quality of one of the world's premier batsmen.

But Zondi said an approach by de Villiers to come out of international retirement for the World Cup had come 24 hours before South Africa were due to announce their final squad, and was rejected out of hand.

"At no point in the year that he had retired did he make himself available for selection," Zondi said in a CSA statement on Thursday.

"It was no option when I received the news on the day of the squad announcement, our squad was finalised and confirmed.

"AB is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world, but above all else, we have to stay true to our morals and principles, there is no regret in the decision."

There would also have been a feeling of opportunism on behalf of de Villiers, who had skipped South Africa's build-up to the event, but then sought to be part of the party at the last minute.

"I pleaded with AB de Villiers not to retire in 2018," Zondi added. "Although there was a perception that he was picking and choosing when to play – which was not true – I did give him the option to plan and monitor his season to get him to the World Cup fresh and in a good space.

"We made it clear that he would have to play during the home tours against Sri Lanka and Pakistan to be considered for selection, instead he signed to play in the Pakistan and Bangladesh Premier Leagues respectively.

"He turned down the offer and said he was at peace with his decision to retire."

Zondi admitted that de Villiers' request for inclusion had come as a surprise, and they owed it to other players in the squad who had worked towards being part of the World Cup to stick with them.

"For (captain) Faf du Plessis and (coach) Ottis Gibson to share AB's desire to be included in the squad on the day we announced our World Cup squad on April 18 was a shock to all of us," Zondi said.

"AB left a big vacuum when he retired, we had a year to find players at franchise level to fill the gap. We had players who put in the hard work, who put up their hands and deserved to be given the opportunity to go to the World Cup.

"The decision was based on principle; we had to be fair to the team, the selection panel, our franchise system and players."
