Former middle-order batsman Mike Hussey has been drafted in by Australian coach Justin Langer to help mentor the side during their upcoming Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

He is the latest great to be brought into the fold after Ricky Ponting joined the backroom staff at the one-day World Cup this year and Steve Waugh helped out during the Ashes series in England.

"I'm very excited actually. I'm really looking forward to getting back in around the Aussie team," Hussey, who is nicknamed "Mr Cricket", told the Sydney Daily Telegraph on Sunday.

"They are going to be trying to get strategies in place, develop a style of play and what players they want and I love all that stuff -- planning for a big event.

"They have floated the possibility of being involved closer to the T20 World Cup (in Australia next year) as well but it's all pretty loose at the moment."

Australia plays back-to-back three-game T20 series against Sri Lanka and then Pakistan starting next Sunday in Adelaide to kick off their summer season.

Langer has also made former Test speedster Ryan Harris bowling coach for the series.

He told the newspaper the presence of Ponting, Waugh and now Hussey was enormous for his team.

"I can't tell you how influential these guys can be on the group," said Langer.

"It's nice to have different voices and different eyes and see guys of that calibre giving us feedback on what they see."

Rohit Sharma struck his maiden double Test century Sunday as India declared on 497 for nine on day two of the third Test against South Africa.

The in-form opener reached the milestone with a six off paceman Lungi Ngidi in the third over after lunch to a standing ovation from the raucous home crowd in Ranchi.

He hit another six off Ngidi before falling to paceman Kagiso Rabada for 212 and returned to the pavilion with handshakes from the South African side.

The left-handed Ravindra Jadeja then took control to hit his 13th Test half-century before falling to debutant spinner George Linde for 51.

Linde returned figures of 4-133 with his left-arm spin.

Number nine Umesh Yadav played a useful cameo of 31, hitting five sixes during his 10-ball blitz.

Mohammed Shami, on 10, and debutant Shahbaz Nadeem, on one, was batting when skipper Virat Kohli called them back at the stroke of tea.

Sharma, who hit twin centuries in his debut as Test opener at the start of the series, pulled India out of early trouble with his 267-run fourth-wicket stand with Ajinkya Rahane, who made 115.

The senior batsman, playing his 30th Test, surpassed his previous best of 177 on his debut against the West Indies in 2013.

Sharma, who has three double centuries in his already illustrious one-day career, smashed the ball all around the park as he hit 28 fours and six sixes in his 255-ball stay.

He successfully reviewed an lbw decision on seven and survived a dropped catch on 28 on day one.

Rahane, who started Sunday on 83, became Linde's first Test victim and the only Indian wicket to fall in the morning session.

Rabada struck twice to reduce India to 39 for three after the hosts elected to bat first on Saturday.

Bad light and rain forced an early end to the opening day with only 58 overs after play was called off.

India is aiming for a whitewash after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Rohit Sharma hits double ton as India declare on 497-9

Opening batsman Rohit Sharma on Saturday broke the record for registering the most number of sixes in a bilateral Test series.

He achieved the feat on the first day of the third and final Test against South Africa here at Ranchi. Sharma has now smashed 16 sixes in the entire series.

Sharma went past West Indies' batsman Shimron Hetmyer who had registered 15 sixes in the series against Bangladesh in 2018/19.

Before Hetmyer's record, spinner Harbhajan Singh held the record as he hit 14 sixes in the series against New Zealand in 2010/11.

Sharma who has gone past the 100-run mark in the Test also became only the second Indian opener to score three or more centuries in a Test series.

Sunil Gavaskar was the only previous Indian to do so, in three different series.

In the third and final Test, India won the toss and elected to bat first against South Africa.

Virat Kohli-led side handed the debut cap to Shahbaz Nadeem. On the other hand, Proteas skipper announced that Quinton de Kock would be opening the batting for the side in place of Aiden Markram.

Nadeem is only the second cricketer in the history of Ranji Trophy to take 50 wickets in a season twice, having taken 51 in 2015-16.

While filing this story, India had reached the score of 184/3 in the first innings. Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane are currently unbeaten on 101 and 60 respectively.

Phil Simmons has been appointed coach of the West Indies for a second spell on a four-year deal, the country's cricket board (CWI) has said.

Simmons, who takes over from interim coach Floyd Reifer, was first named coach after the 2015 World Cup but was suspended for a period later that year for questioning selectors.

The 56-year-old former batsman returned to lead the team to the World Twenty20 title in 2016 but was sacked five months later before subsequently receiving an apology and a financial settlement from the CWI.

"Bringing Phil Simmons back is not just righting a past wrong but I am confident that CWI has chosen the right man for the job at the right time," CWI President Ricky Skerritt said.

"I want to also thank the very talented Floyd Reifer for the hard work he put in while he was the interim coach."

Reifer was named interim coach in April as part of a number of administrative changes less than two months before the World Cup in England and Wales.

Simmons first assignment will be West Indies' series against Afghanistan in November, which will be played in India. The teams will play three T20 internationals, followed by three one-day internationals and one test match.

Former India captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/sourav-ganguly-likely-to-be-new-bcci-president-sources-255756">Sourav Ganguly </a>has praised the current skipper Virat Kohli calling him a 'champion player'.

"India is a good team. They are playing well. Yes, I know they have not won a big tournament but they played well in the big tournaments except the semis and the finals. So, hopefully, Virat can change it around. He is a champion player," Ganguly told reporters.

India was knocked out of the World Cup 2019 in the semi-finals after facing a defeat at the hands of New Zealand.

Ganguly, who is likely to become the president of the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), said that he would focus on first-class cricket as it is the base of the Indian cricket.

"My biggest priority is first-class cricketers. We will change their lives because that is the most important thing. They are the base of Indian cricket. We only look at the top but we will have to look at the bottom and we will change it," he said.

Ganguly also said that they have a very young team and will work to the best of their ability.

"First, I think what makes me happier is that I get an opportunity when it is a tough situation, which gives me a tremendous amount of confidence and makes me feel like they have faith in me and my ability. So, that's what it is and I will work to the best of what I know," said Ganguly.

"I have got a very young team with Jay (Shah), Arun (Dhumal) and Jayesh (George). Jay and I are the most experienced. We will do it to the best of our ability. How we will do -- I do not know but there will not be any lack of efforts," added Ganguly.

Former South Africa batsman Gary&nbsp;Kirsten&nbsp;would be the perfect&nbsp;candidate&nbsp;to replace Trevor Bayliss as&nbsp;England&nbsp;coach&nbsp;and the country's cricket board should not hesitate to make another overseas appointment, former captain Michael&nbsp;Atherton&nbsp;said.

British media reported that former India&nbsp;coach&nbsp;Kirsten&nbsp;has emerged as the leading contender to take over from Australia's Bayliss, who departed after the Ashes series against Australia following their maiden 50-over World Cup triumph earlier this year.

Atherton&nbsp;said that the 51-year-old's experience of guiding India to the 2011 World Cup title and&nbsp;coaching South Africa to the top of the test rankings a year later had given him the advantage over English&nbsp;candidates for the role.

"It's dangerous to fall into the trap of thinking a foreign accent makes you a better&nbsp;candidate, but no English&nbsp;coach&nbsp;has such an impressive CV as&nbsp;Kirsten's," former opener&nbsp;Atherton&nbsp;wrote in the Times newspaper.

If appointed,&nbsp;Kirsten&nbsp;would be only the fourth foreigner to&nbsp;coach&nbsp;England&nbsp;in a list that also includes Zimbabweans Duncan Flecther and Andy Flower.

"Nationality is immaterial; skills as communicators, man-managers, and expertise in technique are all important... they (coaches) are facilitators, teachers, and enablers, trying to help to improve the lives and careers of players," he said.

"He (Kirsten) would make a fine choice. There are those who will frown upon another overseas appointment... I'm not of that number."

Atherton&nbsp;said&nbsp;Kirsten's immediate focus would be to provide the structure needed to improve fourth-ranked&nbsp;England's standing in test cricket.

"The one-day team is in good shape and runs itself under Eoin Morgan, while the test team is in need of some tender loving care,"&nbsp;Atherton&nbsp;added.

"The captain, Joe Root, is&nbsp;in need of a&nbsp;coach&nbsp;to apply greater structure than the free-wheeling Bayliss was apt to do. South Africans love a bit of structure."

Kirsten's former South Africa teammate Lance Klusener, who was named Afghanistan head&nbsp;coach&nbsp;last week, echoed&nbsp;Atherton's views.

"He brings winning, so that for me is vitally important," Klusener told the BBC.

"He's one of those guys that when he does stand up and speak, people tend to listen, and he's had that ability since I used to play with him."

Mayank Agarwal hit his second century in successive matches on the opening day of the second Test against South Africa Thursday and said his side should aim for a 500-run first innings.

The opener, who <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/mayank-agarwal-scores-a-double-century-253468">made a double century in India's opening Test win,</a> scored 108 after the hosts elected to bat.

India was 273-3 when bad light forced an early end to play, with skipper Virat Kohli unbeaten on 63 and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane on 18.

Kohli and Rahane put on 75 runs for the fourth wicket to thwart South Africa's determined bowlers who kept them under pressure as the gloom crept in.

Agarwal, 28, said he was thrilled with his performance.

"The team is in a good position, winning the toss, batting first and with one batsman short, it's a good thing to make runs... 450-500 would be nice," Agarwal said.

"Try and get big runs in the first innings... (that) could help us in case we don't want to bat again. It could really put pressure on the South Africans."

Kohli, leading the Test side for the 50th time, reached his half-century with a boundary off fast bowler Vernon Philander.

But Agarwal took the lead role despite being hit on the helmet from a bouncer by debutant paceman Anrich Nortje. He went on to hit Nortje for three glorious off drives in one over before lunch.

The right-handed batsman put on 138 runs for the second wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 58, to steady the innings after the fall of Rohit Sharma early in the day.

He was eventually caught in the slips by South African captain Faf du Plessis,&nbsp;one of fast bowler Kagiso Rabada's three wickets for the day.

"There were periods where I was getting boundaries very easily, there were periods where they bowled very good line and lengths and were testing the bouncer as well," said Agarwal, who is playing his sixth Test since making his debut last year.

Rabada also claimed Sharma, who edged the ball into the gloves of wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock for 14 in the 10th over.

That was a disappointment for Sharma, who hit twin centuries in his first run as Test opener in Visakhapatnam where India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Rabada struck again to get Pujara, caught again by du Plessis, just before tea. Pujara, who was dropped by Temba Bavuma before he scored, hit a six and nine fours.

Rabada returned figures of 3-48 in 18.1 overs.

Victory for India in the series will see them beat the record of 10 straight home series wins they share with Australia.

India's 15-year-old women's cricket sensation Shafali Verma had to get her hair cut like a boy so that she could get into the local academy to train, her father said.

Now India's cricket establishment is relying on Verma, who made her Twenty20 debut for the national team against South Africa last month and will soon go on a tour of the West Indies.

The teenager has become known for her aggressive batting. But her father Sanjeev Verma told of the struggle to get her daughter accepted in games.

"I introduced her to cricket when she was eight or nine. I used to take her to play neighbourhood teams on Sundays," he said.

"Most teams refused to play against her. They said that she could get hurt and that I would complain if that happened.

"Even when I insisted she was my daughter and I was okay, most didn't agree," said Verma, who makes jewellery in Rohtak near New Delhi.

That is when he decided to give her a "boy's haircut" to trick opponents.

"At eight or nine, all kids look the same. After the haircut, most didn't even notice she was a girl and she started playing regularly at weekends," he said.

The father said he was never worried about seeing her play against male teams, believing it would improve her skills.&nbsp;

But when he tried to get professional training, he hit a new equality obstacle when academies refused to take Shefali.

"Most in town refused to take a girl. I eventually found one which took boys and girls. It was eight kilometres (five miles) from our house and she used to cycle there for training each day," the proud parent added.

Father and daughter are "diehard fans" of Sachin Tendulkar, holder of many scoring records and a legend in Indian cricket.

"I have always been a Sachin fan and I made sure that I introduced her to his batting very early. We watched so many Sachin innings together," he said.

With Shafali already in the national team, at least two other members of the Verma family hope to find cricket success.

Shafali's 17-year-old brother, Sahil, also hopes to rise through the ranks.

"Even my youngest daughter Nancy, 6, has started playing cricket. Both of them are inspired by their sister. I just hope she plays for the national team for a long time and is part of the first Indian women's team to win the World Cup," he said.

The father said he was never worried about seeing her play against male teams, believing it would improve her skills.

Seconds after the NBA's first games in India ended, the packed Mumbai stadium erupted with cheers as spectators -- some of whom were still struggling to understand basketball etiquette -- rose to their feet.&nbsp;

In a country where cricket reigns supreme, basketball has long struggled to make a mark, and the NBA took no chances, launching a promotional blitzkrieg before the pre-season games between the Sacramento Kings and the Indiana Pacers.

As Indiana Pacers power forward Myles Turner, who helped his team to victories on Friday and Saturday, put it,&nbsp;&nbsp;"When you think of basketball, you don't necessarily think of India."

But the 7,000 sold-out seats and howls of enthusiasm at Saturday's match suggested that, at least for some Indians, basketball matters.

"It was an exhilarating experience... a brilliant experience," said 22-year-old graduate student Akash Saraswati, who saved up for his ticket costing more than $90.

Even a broken leg could not stop him travelling to Mumbai from the neighbouring city of Pune. "I didn't hesitate," he said.

Many of those who packed the stands were die-hard fans like Saraswati, travelling from as far afield as Delhi and Bangalore.

Others were there for a taste of something new, grappling with the rules as they watched the players dribble, dive and dunk.

"There's so much grace and effortless co-ordination among the players. It's beautiful to watch," said sales executive Rajesh Kamble, who admitted he was still trying to figure out the sport.

The game may have confused some, but the entertainment was familiar territory -- Bollywood dances replaced cheerleader routines and a Mumbai hip-hop group took over the floor before the tip-off.&nbsp;

The courtside audience included celebrities such as Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra-Jonas. The biggest ovation of the night, however, was for NBA legend Larry Bird, whose presence brought the crowd to its feet.

What happens once 'circus' leaves?

But questions remain about how much the NBA -- whose 2017-18 season revenue was a staggering $8 billion, according to Forbes -- is willing to invest in India and whether its audience will be restricted to hardcore fans and wealthy urbanites.

"The fact that the circus has come to town is a great thing," said Vishal Jhunjhunwala, partner at Mumbai-based sports marketing firm, Square Consulting.&nbsp;

"But what happens once the circus leaves town?

"You need a local connect, a superstar with Indian roots for basketball to take off. That doesn't exist at the moment, unlike say China where the presence of a star like Yao Ming galvanised his whole country into following the sport," Jhunjhunwala told AFP.

No Indian player has ever taken part in an NBA game and although NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told reporters that he hopes to see that change within five years, few are holding their breath.

And, unlike cricket which is played everywhere from India's slums to members’ clubs, basketball enjoys a limited appeal in the country of 1.3 billion people.

The cheapest ticket for Saturday's game cost 4,500 rupees ($65), going up to an astronomical 85,000 rupees for courtside seats. In comparison, a season pass for next week's second Test between India and South Africa in Pune tops out at 5,000 rupees.&nbsp;

Although the high price did not deter well-heeled sports fans, analysts say the NBA risks losing out on a huge chunk of India's audience if it doesn't build up mass appeal.

"You are asking people to spend a lot to watch a sport they don't know much about," said Jhunjhunwala.

To those in the stands, however, the spectacle was well worth the big bucks.

"I am a cricket fan but... basketball also has huge potential and hopefully this is the start of a new sporting journey", said 25-year-old Danish Contractor.

In his comments, the NBA's Silver said the games "required us bringing in a court, a scoreboard, seats, locker rooms" to Mumbai.

They will have to do much more if the sport is to have a long-term future in the country, experts say as the NBA pre-season Asia tour now heads off to Japan and China for further matches over the coming week.

"One game isn't going to turn India into a basketball-loving nation. But it's a first step," said Jhunjhunwala.

"If they lose money on it, well, they have deep pockets".

Committee of Administrator's&nbsp;chief, Vinod Rai, on Wednesday said that the newly elected Board of Control for Cricket body will have the liberty to appoint Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) if the need arises.

The remarks came following Shantha Rangaawamy and former Indian captain Kapil Dev stepping down as CAC members after being served a conflict of interest notice by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/dinesh-karthik-tenders-unconditional-apology-for-violating-bcci-central-contract-clause-248436">BCCI</a> ethics officer Justice DK Jain.

"The appointment of all the three members of the CAC was specific only for the selection of the head coach this year. Now CAC has been ceased to exist post the selection of the head coach. The new elected BCCI body will have the freedom to appoint a CAC when the need arises," said Rai.

Star batsman of Team India Rohit Sharma struck a century in his first outing as Test opener to help India start strongly in the first match against South Africa on Wednesday.

Sharma -- a star of India's limited-overs teams -- reached 115 and Mayank Agarwal 84 after the hosts elected to bat first in Visakhapatnam and made South Africa toil.

Sharma completed his fourth Test century in the second session with a single off debutant spinner Senuran Muthusamy to raucous cheers from the home crowd.

He hit five sixes and 12 fours from 174 balls faced up to the break and showed frequent glimpses of the form that has made him a feared one-day batsman.

Agarwal, like Sharma, also used his feet to good effect against the South African spinners who struggled on the batting-friendly pitch.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis rotated his spinners, led by Keshav Maharaj, for a large part of the day with intermittent spells from pacemen Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander.

India, who top the Test World Championship rankings, are looking for a record 11th Test series win at home.

A sudden thunder storm forced the umpires to call tea seven minutes early.

India's playing XI: Virat Kohli (Capt), Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Md Shami.

South Africa's playing XI: Faf du Plessis (Capt), Temba Bavuma (vc), Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock, Dean Elgar, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Senuran Muthusamy, Vernon Philander, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada.

India vs South Africa, first Test: Rohit Sharma's century gives India a strong start

Australia's Alyssa Healy smashed an unbeaten 148 off 61 balls to set a new world record for the highest individual score in women's Twenty20 internationals at the North Sydney Oval on Wednesday.

Healy reached her century in just 46 balls, the second-fastest in history, as Australia piled up 226 for two in the final game of the three-match series against Sri Lanka.

The 29-year-old opener reached the world record with a six in the penultimate over, eclipsing teammate Meg Lanning's previous mark of 133 not out set against England in July.

This time Lanning was cast in a supporting role as she admired the innings from the non-striker's end.

Having celebrated her 100th T20I two days ago, Healy knocked the stuffing out of Sri Lanka's bowling attack and finished with 19 fours and seven sixes.

"It was just one of those days where everything seemed to come out of the middle, so I'll take that," Healy told Fox Cricket.

Incessant rain threatened the first day-night international between Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Friday, the first in Karachi for 10 years.

The pitch and its adjoining areas were covered as the scheduled toss at 2:30 pm (0930 GMT) were delayed with both teams inside their dressing rooms.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/karachi-gears-up-for-first-one-day-international-in-10-years-252234">Karachi</a> has not hosted a one-day international since January 2009 when Sri Lanka played two back-to-back matches at the National Stadium.

Pakistan, forced to play home matches in the neutral venues of the United Arab Emirates, convinced Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to send their team, assuring them of stringent security with 2,000 personnel guarding the teams around the hotel and stadium.

Ten top Sri Lankan players, including their ODI captain Dimuth Karunaratne and former captains Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, withdrew from the tour.

The tour was stalled after SLC received threats of possible terror attacks on their team in Pakistan before getting the all-clear last week.

The remaining two ODIs will be played in Karachi on Sunday and Wednesday.

Sri Lanka will also play three Twenty20 internationals in Lahore on October 5, 7 and 9.

Rain threatens one-day international return in Karachi

Karachi hosts a one-day international for the first time in 10 years when Pakistan take on a depleted Sri Lanka on Friday, furthering the country's revival in international cricket.

"History will be made on Friday when Karachi will host the first ODI," said Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed.

"We must thank the Sri Lankan team for touring us."

Teams have been reluctant to visit the cricket-mad country since a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in 2009.

Although no players were killed in the attack, several were injured and eight people died.

The attack forced Pakistan to play all their "home" Tests and most of its short-form games in the United Arab Emirates with Zimbabwe becoming the first team to return to Pakistan in 2015.

That tour was followed by a Twenty20 series by a World XI in 2017, a one-off T20 match against Sri Lanka that same year, and the West Indies for a Twenty20 series in Karachi in 2018.

The current tour — comprising of three one-day internationals and as many Twenty20s — was tainted by the withdrawal of 10 Sri Lankan players who cited security fears.

Sri Lanka then stalled the tour after receiving information of a possible militant attack on the team, before the all clear was finally given last week.
High security

Pakistan have put in place stringent security measures normally reserved for heads of state.

All the arrangements are being led by the country's military, with around 2,000 security personnel on alert at the team's hotel and at the ground.

Sri Lankan skipper Lahiru Thirimanne — captaining the side after regular skipper Dimuth Karunaratne pulled out -- is confident cricket will be in focus.

"SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) has presented us the security plan which we are getting in Pakistan so I am pretty happy with that and I explained to my family as well, so they don't have a concern," said Thirimanne earlier this week.

The captain said the decision by some of his teammates to pull out of the tour was a "personal matter".

"We still have a good team," he said. "I believe if we play to our potential we can do very well."

Sarfaraz and fast bowler Wahab Riaz are the only Pakistani players who have played a one-day international in Karachi before -- back in 2008.

"I can't wait for Friday," said Sarfaraz, who took over as ODI captain in 2017.

The remaining ODIs will also be in Karachi on Sunday and Wednesday.

The two teams will also play three Twenty20 internationals — all in Lahore — on October 5, 7 and 9.

Teams:

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (captain), Babar Azam (vice-captain), Abid Ali, Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Mohammad Hasnain, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Shadab Khan, Usman Shinwari, Wahab Riaz.

Sri Lanka: Lahiru Thirimanne (captain), Danushka Gunathilaka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Avishka Fernando, Oshada Fernando, Shehan Jayasuriya, Dasun Shanaka, Minod Bhanuka, Angelo Perera, Wanindu Hasaranga, Lakshan Sandakan, Nuwan Pradeep, Isuru Udana, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara

While referring to Islamabad's support to terrorism, Jaishankar said that New Delhi can't take a "tea break" and say "let us go and play cricket" with Pakistan.

Speaking in New York at an event, Jaishankar said that the "dominating narrative of the relationship" between New Delhi and Islamabad "is of terrorism, suicide bombings, violence and then you say, 'okay guys tea break, let us go and play cricket'".

He highlighted the recent terror attacks in India at Uri, Pathankot, and Pulwama and said that "its a very hard narrative to sell to people... It's a democracy, sentiments do matter and one message [that] I don't want to give [is that] you do terrorism by night, and [then] it's business as usual during the day."

He added that "it is very difficult in real life to separate issues".

India has been focusing on the issue of counter-terrorism and urging the world to speak about it in unison.

While slamming Islamabad, Jaishankar said, "You have terrorism in different parts of the world but there is no part where a country uses it consciously as a large scale industry against its neighbour".

This is the second time in a week that the minister has slammed Pakistan in New York at an event.

Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has ruled out the possibility India playing cricket with Pakistan. While referring to Islamabad's support to terrorism, Jaishankar said that New Delhi can't take a "tea break" even if Pakistan says "let us go and play cricket".

Speaking in New York at an event, Jaishankar said that the "dominating narrative of the relationship" between New Delhi and Islamabad "is terrorism, suicide bombings, violence", making it impossible to resume a normal relationship. He highlighted the recent terror attacks in India at Uri, Pathankot, and Pulwama and said that "its a very hard narrative to sell to people... It's a democracy, sentiments do matter and one message [that] I don't want to give [is that] you do terrorism by night, and [then] it's business as usual during the day." He added that "it is very difficult in real life to separate issues". India has been focusing on the issue of counter-terrorism and requesting the world to speak about it in unison. While slamming Islamabad, Jaishankar said, "You have terrorism in different parts of the world but there is no part where a country uses it consciously as a large scale industry against its neighbour". England have dropped Jonny Bairstow from their Test squad for the tour of New Zealand, with paceman James Anderson unavailable for the two-match series due to a calf injury.

Four uncapped players will be on the plane — Warwickshire opener Dominic Sibley, Kent batsman Zak Crawley and Lancashire pair Saqib Mahmood and Matt Parkinson.

Batsman Jason Roy, who starred in England's World Cup triumph, is another name missing from the 15-strong Test squad after a difficult Ashes series, which ended 2-2 last week.

Surrey batsman Ollie Pope, who played two Tests against India in 2018, is back in the squad while Jos Buttler will be the wicketkeeper in New Zealand due to Bairstow's absence.

Bairstow, 29, scored just 214 runs in the five Ashes Tests during the English summer at an average of 23.77.

Anderson, England's top Test wicket-taker, has been out of action since the first Test against Australia and is targeting the South Africa tour, starting in December.

The first Test, at Mount Maunganui, starts on November 21. The series is not included in the new World Test Championship.&nbsp;

National selector Ed Smith confirmed Bairstow, who will travel with the 15-man T20 squad, had been dropped rather than rested.

"This feels like an opportunity for Jonny to reset," he said on Sky Sports.

"He's not rested. He drops out of the Test team but it's an opportunity for Jonny after a very busy summer, very hectic schedule, to reset, to work on one or two things and to come back stronger," he added.

"My prediction is he comes back very strongly."

World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan will captain the Twenty20 team, with the five-match series starting on November 1.

Somerset's Tom Banton and Mahmood have earned their first England call-ups after impressive white-ball summers, along with Worcestershire seamer Pat Brown and Lancashire spinner Matthew Parkinson.

Left-arm quick Beuran Hendricks led an inspired bowling attack as South Africa kept India to 134 for nine during Sunday's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/india-opt-to-bat-in-third-south-africa-t20-251240">third Twenty20 international</a> in Bangalore.

Hendricks, who was the only change in the side from South Africa's previous loss, and spinner Bjorn Fortuin took two wickets each after Indian skipper Virat Kohli's surprising decision to bat first.

The hosts lost three of their top batsmen early, including Kohli for nine, on a pitch where teams usually opt to bat last.

Rohit Sharma was the first to go for nine, caught at slip off Hendricks while fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan returned to the dug out for 36.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took Kohli's scalp after the star batsman was holed out at deep square leg boundary, with Andile Phehlukwayo completing a sharp running catch.

Rabada took three wickets, including two in the final over, but gave away 39 runs from his four overs.

Fortuin struck twice with his left-arm spin in the 13th over to take wickets from Rishabh Pant for 19 and Shreyas Iyer for five.

Hardik Pandya, who hit 14, and Ravindra Jadeja, who made 19 off 17 deliveries, made useful cameos in the end to leave the hosts with some respect.

Sri Lanka's Cricket Board on Thursday said that it will go ahead with its tour of Pakistan despite fears that players could be the targets of terror attacks during the six-match visit.

Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Mohan de Silva said that they received the all-clear from the defence ministry to leave for Pakistan on Tuesday after establishing that there was no threat to the national team.

Sri Lanka Cricket Board added in a statement that the governing body was assured the Pakistan army would coordinate security set at a level usually reserved for a Head of State.

"Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that the forthcoming tour of Pakistan will go ahead as planned, following assurances given by the government of Pakistan that it will provide maximum security", the statement said.

De Silva added that he and "our office bearers will also be accompanying the team".

Reports from last week about a possible terror attack were referred to the defence ministry for investigation.

The Sri Lankan team was the target of an attack during a Test match in Pakistan's Lahore in March 2009, with six players injured when gunmen attacked their bus.

Six Pakistani policemen and two civilians were killed.

Since the attack, a majority of international teams have refused to tour the South Asian country.

Sri Lanka's first match in Lahore after that was one T20 game against Pakistan in October 2017.

Sri Lankan cricket team to go ahead with Pakistan tour despite terror fears

India's newly appointed batting coach Vikram Rathour has joined head coach Ravi Shastri in demanding more discipline from exciting stumper-batsman Rishabh Pant.

Pant's six-hitting ability makes him a limited-overs asset, but Shastri in a recent interview said the 21-year-old's penchant for throwing away his wicket has occasionally let the team down.

The Delhi player is perceived as Mahendra Singh Dhoni's natural successor in limited-overs cricket when the former captain eventually hangs up his gloves, but Rathour insisted Pant must improve his shot selection.

"Rishabh is a phenomenal player, no doubt about that," Rathour told reporters in Mohali ahead of the second Twenty20 International against South Africa on Wednesday.

"Of course he needs to sort out his gameplan a little more. He needs to bring in a little bit of discipline to his cricket."

With next year's Twenty20 World Cup in mind, Rathour extended the message to all young members of the side that fearless cricket did not mean reckless cricket.

"What the team management is asking from them is fearless cricket - having clear gameplans and playing with intent, backing your strengths. At the same time, you cannot be careless," the former India opener said.

"I'm sure they are smart enough to understand that."

India will also play three tests against South Africa next month, when limited-overs stalwart Rohit Sharma may reinvent himself as a test opener.

Rohit smashed a record five centuries at this year's 50-overs World Cup, but the white-ball stalwart has managed only 27 sporadic test appearances.

Rathour said 32-year-old Rohit has the game to succeed across formats, which would be a massive boost for the side.

"He has done so well as an opener in white ball cricket, so I don’t see any reason why he can’t do well in red ball cricket as well, provided we provide him enough opportunities," Rathour said.

"If he comes good, it will be a huge asset for the team. Somebody of his experience, the kind of cricket he plays - if he plays at the top of the order, it will be a huge thing."

The first one day international in the United States begins on Friday in Florida between the USA and Papua New Guinea, 175 years after USA played cricket's first recognised international against Canada at Manhattan.

The match at Lauderhill's Central Broward Regional Park is part of a tri-series with Namibia, and also a seven-team competition which will reward the top three sides with berths in the final round of qualifiers for the 2023 World Cup in India.

USA have played three ODIs, including two at the 2004 Champions Trophy, and lost all of them.

USA, who played Canada at Manhattan's St George's Cricket Club in what is considered the first ever international cricket match in 1844, were granted ODI status in April and will play nine tri-series over the next two years.

West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has been named as the new captain of their one-day international and Twenty20 teams, the country's cricket board (CWI) said on Monday.

Pollard, who has not played an ODI for West Indies since October 2016, replaces Jason Holder at the helm. Holder, who led the team at the last two 50-over World Cups, will continue to lead the side in Test cricket.

"We believe Kieron Pollard is the right person at the right time now to lead the West Indies team in white ball cricket," CWI President Ricky Skerritt said at a news conference.

"Jason Holder is a very important force and he is still going to be our red ball captain."

Pollard will begin his captaincy by travelling to India for a series against Afghanistan. They will play three T20s followed by three ODI matches in November.

"In the short term as captain, the immediate aim is to defend the T20 World Cup," Pollard, 32, said. West Indies will be defending their T20 World Cup title next year in Australia.

"One of the discussions I hope to have is to bring back the idea of specialists playing in their best positions," he added.

"I've played all over the world and I hope to use this experience to help the West Indies in my role as captain."

The once mighty West Indies, who won the first two editions of the World Cup during the 1970s, finished ninth in the 10-team standings at this year's tournament, winning only two of their nine matches.

Skerritt said that the CWI had reviewed a flawed selection policy and will now pick players based on various criteria such as form, fitness, performance, team balance and commitment.

"One of the things we found in our one-day team shortcomings is over 50 players were picked between the 2015 and 2019 World Cups," Skerritt added. "It made little sense and the results showed."

Kieron Pollard named new West Indies captain for ODIs and T20s

Pat Cummins took two wickets in two balls, including England captain Joe Root for a golden duck, to leave Australia on the brink of retaining the Ashes at Old Trafford on Saturday.

England were 18-2 in their second innings at stumps on the fourth day of the fourth Test, still needing a further 365 runs on Sunday's last day to reach a target of 383.

"They're coming out alright at the moment!," Cummins told Sky Sports. "I'm feeling okay. One big final push tomorrow."

By contrast, Australia require eight wickets to seal a win that would see the holders keep the Ashes at 2-1 up with one to play in a five-Test series.

The most England have made in the fourth innings to win a Test was the 362/9 they posted in their series-levelling success last time out at Headingley, where Ben Stokes's stunning 135 not out and the resistance of No 11 Jack Leach secured a remarkable one-wicket victory.

Earlier, Steve Smith's remorseless run-glut continued as he made 82 -- his lowest score this series -- in Australia's second innings of 186-6 declared.

Rory Burns and Root had shared a partnership of 141 while making 81 and 71 respectively in England's first-innings 301, but on Saturday they were both out for nought in the first over of England's chase.

Left-handed opener Burns, looking to turn Cummins's third ball legside, got a leading edge and was caught at short cover by Travis Head.

Next ball a brilliant delivery that nipped away off the seam and clipped the top of off stump saw Root bowled by Cummins for his third nought of the series and second golden duck.

Cummins was on a hat-trick, with the struggling Jason Roy next in but the World Cup winner responded with a solid forward defensive shot and he was eight not out at stumps, with Joe Denly unbeaten on 10.

'Unbelievable Smith'&nbsp;

Earlier, Smith's ninth successive Ashes fifty, extending his own record, followed his superb 211 in the first innings of his comeback Test after he missed the match at Headingley with concussion.

In what is his first Test series since completing a 12-month ball-tampering ban, former Australia captain Smith has now scored 671 runs, including three hundreds, at an average of 134.2.

He was on course to become the first batsman in Ashes history, and only the eighth in any Test, to score a double hundred and hundred in the same match when he lofted left-arm spinner Leach with Stokes, running round from long-off, holding a safe catch to end a 92-ball innings featuring 11 fours.

Australia were in trouble at 44-4 before tea, with Stuart Broad and Archer taking two wickets apiece after England narrowly avoided following-on in reply to the tourists' 497-8 declared.

But Smith counter-attacked in superb style.

"None of us expected the innings Smithy went out with, he was incredible," said Cummins. "We'd have been happy to get though the night but Smithy was unbelievable."

Meanwhile, England coach Trevor Bayliss insisted: "Anything is possible. We saw that in the last Test match.&nbsp;

"We have got a couple guys out there and a few guys in the shed who are more than capable of scoring a hundred," the Australian added.

Smith did give a chance on 48 when he reverse-swept Leach, with Stokes, anticipating the shot and moving quickly across from slip, failing to hold what would have been a sensational catch.

The 30-year-old Smith toyed with England's bowlers on a sunny afternoon, pulling Broad for an extravagant four.

While Smith has enjoyed a run-spree, David Warner -- also returning to Tests from a year-long ball-tampering ban &nbsp;-- has become Broad's 'bunny'.

Saturday saw left-handed opener Warner out for his third straight Test duck when Broad, the successful bowler on each occasion, had him lbw.

It was the sixth time Warner had fallen to Broad this Ashes and meant he had completed 'a pair' in the match after a nought in the first innings.

World Cup-winner Archer, in only his third Test, had been down on pace during Australia's first innings.&nbsp;

But the express quick was back over the 90 mph mark on Saturday during a return of 3-45 in 14 overs.

"We'd have been happy to get though the night but Smithy was unbelievable." Meanwhile, England coach Trevor Bayliss insisted: "Anything is possible. We saw that in the last Test match. While Smith has enjoyed a run-spree, David Warner -- also returning to Tests from a year-long ball-tampering ban -- has become Broad's 'bunny'. Saturday saw left-handed opener Warner out for his third straight Test duck when Broad, the successful bowler on each occasion, had him lbw. It was the sixth time Warner had fallen to Broad this Ashes and meant he had completed 'a pair' in the match after a nought in the first innings. World Cup-winner Archer, in only his third Test, had been down on pace during Australia's first innings. But the express quick was back over the 90 mph mark on Saturday during a return of 3-45 in 14 overs.

Former England star Andrew Flintoff has revealed he dreams of coaching the national team in the future.

Flintoff called time on his international career in 2009 and has been working as a television presenter recently after a brief foray into boxing.

The all-rounder hopes to return to cricket in a coaching capacity and already has lower-level qualifications.

England are currently looking for someone to replace Trevor Bayliss who is due to step down at the end of the current&nbsp;Ashes&nbsp;series against Australia.

Flintoff, who helped England win the&nbsp;Ashes&nbsp;as a player in 2005 and 2009, concedes it is too soon to expect to get the job now.

But the 41-year-old refused to rule it out in the long-term.

"Coaching is definitely an ambition. There are probably two or three coaching jobs I'd like - England, Lancashire or Lancashire Academy," he told BBC radio's Test Match Special programme on Friday.

"I'd love to be England coach one day, just not quite yet."

Flintoff, who played his county cricket with Lancashire, has already done some coaching work with the Under-13 side at his old side.

"I've got two of my coaching levels - me and (former England team-mate) Steve Harmison might do our level threes soon," he said.

Flintoff, who played 79 Tests and 141 one-day internationals for England, revealed he applied for the national team coaching job when it became available in 2014.

But he was not taken seriously and the role went to Peter Moores.

"A few years ago I applied for the England coaching job - we were getting beat, I was in the office and thought, 'I'm going to apply'," Flintoff said.

"I wrote an email for the interview, a month passed and I'd heard nothing. I chased it up, then I got a phone call saying they thought it was somebody taking the mick!"

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday banned two Hong Kong players, including one who has already served a 30-month ban, from all cricket for life for breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code in matches played between 2014 and 2016.

Irfan Ahmed, who was banned from all cricket for two-and-a-half years in April 2016 after admitting breaches of the code, was found guilty on nine charges, Irfan's older brother Nadeem Ahmed on three.

The pair were banned for life. Teammate Haseeb Amjad received a five-year ban.

The ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal "heard evidence that all three players fixed or contrived to fix matches, failed, for reward, to perform and failed to disclose approaches to fix during a number of international fixtures across a two-year period".

Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager – ACU (Anti-Corruption Unit), added: "This has been a long and complex investigation which has uncovered systematic attempts to influence moments in matches by experienced international cricketers over a period of time. Their conduct was premeditated and sophisticated and each of the Ahmed brothers sought to corrupt others.

"The main offences relate to the Hong Kong matches against Scotland and Canada where the players fixed specific overs.

"These matches were won by Hong Kong so it did not materially affect the results of the tournament, however I cannot reiterate strongly enough to any player considering this that we treat any form of fixing – spot or match – with the upmost seriousness."

Pakistan will host Sri Lanka for six limited over internationals starting next month, the two cricket boards said Friday, another step towards reviving international cricket in Pakistan after years of isolation.

In a joint statement, the cricket boards said the One Day International series will begin on September 27 in Karachi where they will play the other two ODI matches on September 29 and October 2.

The Sri Lankans will then move to Lahore for three T20 matches starting on October 5 and the final match will be on October 9, with the second match scheduled for October 7.

The two boards said the teams were due to play two Test matches in October and follow it up with the six shorter form matches in December, but decided to swap them.

The dates and the venue for the two Tests were not announced, but Sri Lanka's Sports minister Harin Fernando told reporters in Colombo Thursday that the Tests will not be in Pakistan.

Citing safety fears, Fernando said two Tests could instead be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where Pakistan has held many of its home series.&nbsp;&nbsp;
