One third of humanity under coronavirus lockdown

Spain coronavirus death toll overtook China on Wednesday with 738 new deaths reported in the country; the final number now stands at 3,434, the government said.

The spiralling number of deaths came as Spain entered the 11th day of an unprecedented lockdown to try and rein in the COVID-19 epidemic that has now infected 47,610 people, the health ministry said.

There have been more than 81,200 cases of COVID-19 in China and 3,281 deaths from the virus. However, due to the strict measures including lockdown and travel restrictions, the number of cases has fallen dramatically over the last month while the rest of the world still battles with coronavirus.

However, there has been a surge in numbers of imported cases in China which has fuelled anxiety among the citizens about a possible second wave of infections outbreak as the country seems to take control of the situation.

Bangladesh’s ailing former prime minister Khaleda Zia was released from prison on Wednesday on humanitarian grounds, her party said.

Khaleda, 74, was jailed in 2018 following her conviction for graft. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had suspended her prison term for six months, her party general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.

Her health has been deteriorating for months and she was moved to a hospital in April last year.

Law and Justice Minister Anisul Huq said the move came after a brother and sister of Zia -- who has been in prison for two years -- appealed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to let her arch-rival fly to London for treatment.

Hasina and Zia are bitter rivals whose families have dominated Bangladesh's politics since independence in 1971.

Huq said, however, the 74-year-old Zia would not be allowed to go to another country.

"On the basis of the application and having been directed by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Begum Khaleda Zia's conviction has been suspended," Huq told AFP.

She is freed "on condition that she remains in her Dhaka residence to receive treatment and does not go abroad".

There was no immediate comment from Zia's family or her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Sentenced to 10 years in jail on graft charges, Zia also faces nearly three dozen other outstanding cases. The BNP says the charges are politically motivated to keep her out of politics.

Her lawyers have had repeated bail applications rejected. They have argued that she could die in prison without proper treatment.

A recent leaked medical report on Zia's health said her rheumatoid arthritis was becoming increasingly serious. She has already had two knee replacement operations.

"As a result of combined active disease and accompanied damage she is, at present, at a crippled state and largely dependent on assistance for her day-to-day activities," the report said.

Most would agree that it’s the internet that is keeping us sane these days in the times of coronavirus that has affected us all. With complete lockdown in most places, Hollywood celebs and singers are now holding concerts on the internet for their fans. Artists like Luke Bryan, Chris Martin, Keith Urban, John Legend and Rob Thomas have been performing for fans via social media. Keith Urban took to Instagram on March 23, for a show he called Urban Underground, which featured him performing at home in his personal recording studio space, which he calls Skeye Studios. It became more fun when his wife Nicole Kidman joined him as his “roadie” and helped him switch out guitars between songs and danced. Keith played sets including "Never Comin Down." "You Gonna Fly," "Somewhere in My Car," "The Gambler," "God Whispered Your Name" and "Wasted Time. Same day, Garth Brooks performed for his fans as well with a special installment of his Facebook Live series, Inside Studio G. The singer was also joined by his wife, fellow country superstar Trisha Yearwood, and the pair performed some songs together for 5.2 million viewers watching at home. Brooks performed a slew of different tunes including "Thicker Than Blood," It Doesn't Matter to the Sun," and "Whiskey to Wine" among others -- and the pair also performed a cover of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow." Brooks also gave fans a preview of the PBS Gershwin Prize Special, where Brooks was recently honored with The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The musical event airs March 29 at 9 p.m. on PBS. On March 19, Luke Bryan took to Facebook Live to give fans a little concert from his cigar shop in Watersound, Florida. He performed his new song, "One Margarita," along with a few fan favorites including "Born Here, Live Here, Die Here," "Knockin' Boots," "What She Wants Tonight," and "We Rode in Trucks." Brad Paisley also held an online concert on Thursday, which included Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw and Chris Young. Coldplay singer Chris Martin was one of the first to start the trend, announcing an Instagram Live performance on Monday. “Hello everyone,” the Coldplay frontman tweeted. “I hope you and your family are safe and healthy. If anyone feels like chatting and listening to some music, I’m going to do a livestream on the Coldplay Instagram in about 30 mins (1pm in LA / 8pm in London). love CM #TogetherAtHome.” The musician entertained fans with songs like “A Sky Full of Stars,” and “Trouble.” Hello everyone. Men are faring worse than women in the coronavirus pandemic, according to statistics emerging from across the world.

Researchers say smoking, drinking, general poor health are some of the factors that could explain why more men seem to be dying from coronavirus than women.

Also read: Greta Thunberg says she 'likely' had Covid-19 infection

According to Italy's National Health Institute (ISS), men represent nearly 60 per cent of people who tested positive for the virus and more than 70 per cent of those who have died.

Even in countries like South Korea, where the proportion of women who have tested positive for the virus is higher than that of men, about 54 per cent of the reported deaths are among men.

For every 10 female deaths there have been 24 deaths in Italy, 18 in China, 16 in Germany, 14 in Iran and China and 12 in South Korea.

The emerging picture of male vulnerability to coronavirus may be easily explained by a clear gender disparity with social and cultural roots as men across the world are much more likely to smoke cigarettes. That damages their lungs and primes them for inflammation and further damage when they are battling an infection.

On Saturday, White House COVID-19 Task Force director Dr. Deborah Birx cited a report from Italy showing that men in nearly every age bracket were dying at higher rates than women. Birx called it a ''concerning trend.''

"Just having the knowledge of that helps us in the United States so we can be very specific in talking to the American people about who to protect and how to protect them."

The number of coronavirus cases in Italy is probably 10 times higher than the official tally, the head of the agency collating the data said on Tuesday as the government readied new measures to force people to stay at home.

Italy has seen more fatalities than any other country, with latest figures showing that 6,077 people have died from the infection in barely a month, while the number of confirmed cases has hit 64,000.

However, testing for the disease has often been limited to people seeking hospital care, meaning that thousands of infections have certainly gone undetected.

"A ratio of one certified case out of every 10 is credible," Angelo Borrelli, the head of the Civil Protection Agency, told La Repubblica newspaper, indicating he believed as many as 640,000 people could have been infected.

After four weeks of steep increases in deaths and cases, the growth rate has eased since Sunday, raising hopes that the most aggressive phase of the contagion might be over.

"The official numbers of the last two days indicate a slowdown in the epidemic," said Giorgio Gori, the mayor of Bergamo, a small city in the northern region of Lombardy that has suffered the heaviest death toll in the country.

"I am being cautious because I do not want to delude myself, but at the same time I have a lot of hope that two whole weeks of lockdown plus increasingly restrictive measures are producing results," he told a group of foreign reporters.

The government has shut down all non-essential business until April 3 and the cabinet was due to meet later on Tuesday to tighten the screws still further, including hiking fines for people violating the shutdown to up to 4,000 euros ($4,300) from a maximum 206 euros at present.

Ventilators

The new directive under review, seen by Reuters, would also give the government the option to extend parts of the lockdown to July 31.

Gori said he did not see how business could remain shuttered for much longer, but indicated that the government might look to extend restrictions on those who have proved most vulnerable to the virus, especially the elderly.

The Civil Protection Agency said the biggest difficulty facing the country was a shortage of masks and ventilators - a problem that has dogged the health system since the contagion first surfaced in Lombardy on Feb 21.

Underscoring the problem, the regional governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia, ordered the confiscation of ventilators at veterinaries, saying they could be converted to human use.

With other countries looking to hoard their own medical supplies, a consortium of Italian textile and fashion companies have converted their production lines and will soon be able to produce half the required amount of masks.

"(This) will give our system the ammunition that we need in order to fight this war and avoid our total dependence on imports," Domenico Arcuri, the national commissioner for the emergency, told reporters.

The government has said a number of industrial sectors, including medical suppliers, must keep operating during the crisis, but there is growing unhappiness amongst some unions who think the prescribed list of strategic concerns is too wide.

Italian coronavirus cases seen '10 times higher' than official tally

As the number of coronavirus cases continue to increase worldwide, Spain has turned an ice rink into a temporary morgue to deal with the ever-increasing number of cases in the country.

Spain’s “Ice Palace”, as it roughly translates into, is going to be the temporary place to hold corpses of people who perished in the face of COVID-19 pandemic. The bodies are being transported by the military unit of the country, CNN reported.

Touted as a temporary measure, the authorities claim that it was enforced to “lessen the pain” of the families of the victim, given the overwhelming situation in Madrid’s hospitals.

After China, Italy, and the US, Spain has recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases in the entire world, with the third highest tally of fatalities.

The major Spanish municipal body responsible for dealing with the corpses of coronavirus patients has announced that it will no longer collect bodies, for its workers no longer have protection gear against the virus.

However, other funeral services like burials and cremations would continue as usual, but that depends on how the bodies are sent. If the municipal body receives the body packed in a coffin, only then would they accept it.

The state of emergency was announced in Spain on March 13. The Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had envisioned the emergency to last for 15 days, but given the increasing death rate, it will be extended for 14 more days.

She claimed that even though most people will experience only mild symptoms, the vulnerable population of the city, which accounts for 15 per cent may face harrowing difficulties.

As of figures from today, more than 380,000 cases have been registered worldwide. Additionally, over 16,500 have died. The global tally of the recovered patients so far stands at 100,000.

Britain's leaders on Tuesday urged people to respect an unprecedented countrywide lockdown, saying that following advice to stay at home would stop people dying of coronavirus.

"Unless you stay at home, then the people you love most may die," senior minister Michael Gove said in a round of broadcast interviews.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson late on Monday bowed to pressure to follow other European countries in shutting most shops and services, as the death toll reached 335.

Many streets were deserted on Tuesday morning, although reduced traffic still circulated in London and construction workers were being allowed to stay on site.

Pictures on social media showed packed rush-hour trains on the London Underground "Tube" network, but this is partly as a result of a dramatic reduction in services.

Johnson said people must stay inside except to buy essentials and take daily exercise, but there were questions about how the new rules will be enforced.

"For those people who are determined to flout the rules, the police will have the tools in order to ensure that those people are penalised and punished", Gove said, citing the risk of a fine.

Britain asks public to respect coronavirus lockdown

With the number of coronavirus cases rising rapidly, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the United States could become the next epicentre of the pandemic.

“A very large acceleration” in the number of coronavirus cases has been recorded recently.

Out of the new cases recorded in the last 24 hours, 85 per cent came from Europe and the United States. Out of these, 40 per cent cases alone came from the US.

Margaret Harris, a doctor working with the WHO said that the US has “the potential” to become the next epicentre if the cases continue to rise at the same rate.

“... They [the US] have a very large outbreak and an outbreak that is increasing in intensity,” she told reporters during a briefing.

As of figures from today, more than 380,000 cases have been registered worldwide. Additionally, over 16,500 have died. The global tally of the recovered patients so far stands at 100,000.

The United States currently accounts for more than 46,000 infections, with over 530 deaths, and is expected to overtake Italy, the current epicentre soon in terms of recorded positive cases.

In fact, many researchers believe that the United States could overtake even China’s numbers. Over 82,000 infections were recorded in China.

The United States President Donald Trump recently admitted that they were facing difficulties in the procurement of healthcare supplies in the midst of the pandemic.

“The world market is crazy”, iterated the president while adding that the process of procuring face masks and ventilators has not been easy.

He additionally reaffirmed his commitment to reopening business in the coming weeks. According to him, prolonged closures of services and borders could kill more people than the pandemic itself.

“We can’t have the cure be worse than the problem,” Mr Trump told reporters at a briefing Monday.

“We have to open our country because that causes problems that, in my opinion, could be far bigger problems”, he added.

The United States healthcare system is not equipped to deal with a spike in the number of cases. Experts have continuously asserted the need for social distance and self-isolation, with no vaccine or cure in sight.

“Life is fragile, and economies are fragile,” Mr Trump said, while claiming that he will protect both.

If economic closures extended for over a month, there would be “probably more death from that than anything that we’re talking about with respect to the virus”, the president said.

He also said that the warnings of limiting social contact shall be withdrawn in weeks, not months. “I’m not looking at months, I can tell you right now.”

Additionally, he requested the states with less cases to resume work while the hard-hit states should focus on enforcing precautionary measures.

Could United States become the next epicentre of COVID-19?

Taiwan accused the World Heath Organization of ignoring its questions at the start of the coronavirus outbreak, part of what it has long described as a pattern that puts it at risk because of Chinese pressure to exclude it from international bodies.

Taiwan is barred from membership in the WHO under pressure from China, which views it as a province rather than a state. It responded early to the coronavirus outbreak in China, and has had notable success in limiting contagion so far, with just two deaths and 215 cases.

Taiwan's government has said that keeping it out of the WHO during the outbreak amounts to playing politics with Taiwanese lives, and it has been denied access to first-hand information. Both the WHO and China say Taiwan has been provided with the help it needs.

Speaking to reporters in Taipei, the island's Centres for Disease Control chief Chou Jih-haw said that it written to the WHO and China as early as Dec. 31, asking for information about the newly uncovered virus outbreak in China's Wuhan city, including whether there was human-to-human transmission.

"We asked them whether there's a possibility of human-to-human transmission. We indeed asked them and reminded them of the matter," Chou said. He said the WHO confirmed it had received the letter but did not respond to it.

Health Minister Chen Shih-chung, sitting next to Chou, said Taiwan had fortunately decided that same day to begin screening passengers flying in from Wuhan, and activated its emergency operations centre on January 2, a move experts say allowed Taiwan to effectively control the early spread of the virus.

While Taiwan did send experts to China in January, they were not allowed to see any patients or to go to the market where the virus is believed to have originated, Chen said. That trip made Taiwanese officials realise they had to act quickly.

China confirmed human-to-human transmission on Jan. 20. The WHO said on Jan. 12 there was no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission.

The WHO, in a statement to Reuters, did not directly address the issue of Taiwan being ignored, but said its office in China was informed of the "pneumonia of unknown cause" on Dec. 31.

"Since that time until now WHO has regarded the event as very serious and applied the full range of attention to it from across the organisation," it said.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang denounced what he said were efforts to "politically manipulate" the outbreak, and that the WHO dealt with Taiwan under the "one China" principle.

Taiwan has also complained about the WHO listing its cases under China's, saying this has confused countries into believing its situation is as serious as in mainland China, where more than 80,000 cases have been reported.
