COVID-19 situation report India: 17,656 cases | 559 fatalities

The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in the United States has surpassed 7,80,000, with over 42,000 deaths.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there are 7,83,290 COVID-19 cases in the United States, while the death toll stands at 42,094.

A total of 72,015 people have recovered.

New York alone has confirmed 2,47,512 cases of the novel coronavirus, while the total number of fatalities has climbed to 14,347 in the state. Out of these, 1,36,806 were registered in New York City, according to the Department of Health's COVID-19 Tracker.

The highest number of deaths - 3,261 out of the total of 14,347 fatalities - took place in the city's borough of Brooklyn, followed by Queens with 3,221 deaths, the Bronx with 2,140 and Manhattan with 1,252.

Montana for the first time reported no new cases on Monday after processing 153 tests in the past 24 hours, according to the state's website.

Deaths also have slowed in recent days, rising by about 1,500 so far on Monday compared with over 2,000 a day for most of last week. The United States had a record 2,806 deaths in a single day on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, protestors gathered in state capitals to demand an early end to the lockdowns, while officials pleaded for patience until more testing becomes available.

Stay-at-home measures, which experts say are essential to slow the spread of the respiratory virus, have ground the economy to a standstill and forced more than 22 million people to apply for unemployment benefits in the last month.

Many of the protestors demanding an end to mandatory lockdowns expressed cynicism toward health experts and skepticism about the actual scale of the pandemic, accusing officials of overreaching and taking actions that had caused more harm than the virus itself.

Health experts and lawmakers on the front lines of the battle to curb the pandemic have warned that the country could face a second and even deadlier wave of infections if the lockdowns end prematurely.

The worldwide death toll from COVID-19 pandemic rose to 1,65,216 on Monday, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP.

More than 24,03,410 declared cases have been registered in 193 countries and territories since the epidemic first emerged in China in December. Of these cases, at least 5,37,700 are now considered recovered.

An official from the United States has claimed that in January and February, China bought 18 times more amount of masks and personal protective equipment, which they are now selling at high rates.

Peter Navarro, White House Director of Trade and Manufacturing, alleged on Monday that several countries, including India and Brazil, were not having enough PPE because Beijing was hoarding them.

"China vacuumed up all of the personal protective equipment around the world while it was hiding the virus," Navarro told Fox Business News in an interview.

"I have evidence directly from the Chinese government customs duty union that shows that, in the months of January and February, they bought 18 times more amount of masks," he said, adding, "not only China is hoarding, but is also selling these at a high rate," the official said.

US and China have been sparring over the origin of the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The US also maintains that China had been irresponsible in its dealing of the outbreak, while Beijing begs to differ.

France has officially registered more than 20,000 deaths from COVID-19, becoming the fourth country to pass that threshold. Italy, Spain and the United States have also registered more than 20,000 deaths.

The death toll was now higher than that of the heat wave in the summer of 2003.

An encouraging signal has, however, been a decline for the sixth day in a row in people hospitalised for COVID-19, even though the total, at 30,584 versus 30,610 on Sunday, is going down only slowly. The number of people in intensive care had fallen for the 12th consecutive day, to 5,683 -- the lowest since March 31, suggesting the national lockdown is having positive effects in containing the disease.

The number of confirmed cases increased by 1.8 per cent in France to 1,14,657 and possible cases in nursing homes were up 1.1 per cent at 40,726, for a total of 155,383, up 1.6 per cent in 24 hours after a 0.7 per cent increase on Sunday.

France is due to start unwinding some confinement measures from May 1.

Mexico and Haiti have detected coronavirus infections among migrants deported recently from the United States.

Three Haitians who arrived in the Caribbean country two weeks ago tested positive while in quarantine, a Health Ministry official told Reuters. Haiti so far only has 57 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

In the Mexican border town of Nuevo Laredo, one man deported from Houston infected 14 others at the Catholic church's Nazareth migration shelter. Cubans, Mexicans, Hondurans and a migrant from Cameroon were among those who caught the virus.

Another flight carrying more than 100 Haitian deportees was expected this week.

This follows the virus outbreak among deportees to Guatemala, where the government at the weekend linked almost a fifth of all cases to flights returning migrants from the United States last week. Guatemala has temporarily suspended flights while officials from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) review the test results of an April 13 deportation flight to Guatemala.

Conspiracy theories that wireless communications pose a threat have long been around, but the global spread of the coronavirus at the same time that countries were rolling out fifth generation wireless technology has seen some of those false narratives amplified.

A scene that has repeatedly been on view several times in recent weeks in Europe is an assailant destroying 5G towers, claiming link to coronavirus.

Some 50 fires targetting cell towers and other equipment have been reported in Britain this month. Three people were arrested. Telecom engineers have been abused on the job 80 times, making the UK the nucleus of the attacks.

Some 16 towers have been torched in the Netherlands, with attacks also reported in Ireland, Cyprus, and Belgium.

To this end, officials in Europe and the US are watching the situation closely, concerned that attacks will undermine vital telecommunications links at a time they're most needed to deal with the pandemic.

Posts threatening to attack phone masts have been getting popular on the social media too.

The current wave of 5G theories dates back to January, when a Belgian doctor suggested a link to COVID-19. The theories gained momentum in 2019 from Russian state media outlets, which helped push them into US Domestic conversation, disinformation experts say. But there's no evidence that wireless communications - whether 5G or earlier versions - harm the immune system.

A research scholar waiting to meet his newborn baby, a graduate worried about the job offer in Bangalore and a pregnant woman whose four-day work trip now stretches interminably are among the at least 220 Indians stranded in Japan and getting increasingly desperate to return home.

Stuck in a foreign land as COVID-19 tightens its grip on many countries, dwindling financial resources and expired medical insurances are adding to their tensions.

The group of 220 Indians, including 92 dependants, have collectively reached out to the Indian Embassy in Tokyo asking to be evacuated to India, which has been under lockdown since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement on March 24.
In a signed letter, the stranded Indians have also assured that they will quarantine themselves when back and cooperate with authorities.

Japan's partial lockdown is also a source of worry with some saying they live in constant fear of getting infected with the coronavirus that has infected more than 2.4 million people and claimed over 1,70,000 lives.

Rahul Joe, a research scholar at the University of Hokkaido till his contract expired last month, was all set to move back to Ahmedabad to be with his pregnant wife. The date was set and the tickets booked.

"We were blessed with a baby girl two days back and I don't know when will I able to see my baby for the first time. My medical insurance expired with my contract and now I am scared that if I fall ill I will have no means to get myself treated," Joe told PTI over the phone from Tokyo.

With the number of cases rising in Japan, the country on April 16 expanded the state of emergency to the entire nation in an attempt to prevent the new coronavirus from spreading further and straining the healthcare system. The country has reported more than 11,000 cases.

However, it is not like the lockdown in several other parts of the world as Japan's post World War-II constitution lays out strict protections for civil liberties, Joe said.

"Public transportation is operating as normal. Most state of emergency measures are in form of requests and instructions. Violators cannot be punished unless they fail to comply with orders related to storage or shipment of emergency relief goods and medical supplies. So the risk is even higher. We are stuck inside and living in constant fear," Joe said.

For Kamal Vijayvargiya, a four-day trip to the country has taken on nightmarish overtones and he can't wait to get back home to Jaipur.

"I am in the business of tea and I come to Japan annually for business meetings. I came on March 18 and now I am stuck here. At present, I am staying in an office friend's single room but I cannot stay too long because herself she is a dialysis' patient and it is risky for me to be here,? he said.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman, from Ahmedabad like Joe, said she also went to Japan for four days and has no clue when she will get back home

"I was in the first trimester of my pregnancy when I came to Tokyo in March. It was an official trip for four days but first the janta curfew and then the travel restrictions. It has been a month now, my office has arranged for accommodation and other necessities are being taken care of but it is depressing to be indoors all day in a foreign country without any clarity," she told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Akhilesh Sharma, a Ghaziabad resident, has been in Tokyo since December for a project that was to end in March. He has been living off his savings since then.

"The embassy did help me with a discounted voucher to stay in a hotel but how long can that be managed."

A fresh graduate from Nihon University, who was supposed to join a firm in Bangalore from April 10, is now worried about the plans.

"My studies were over here. I had a job offer. I was supposed to join them in April. The offer has not been withdrawn yet but I am still worried considering all the news about layoffs and paycuts," the young woman said, refusing to be identified.

According to Indian government officials, bringing back stranded Indians is an ongoing process.

"Some questions have come about Indians abroad. It is a situation where we cannot give a definite answer because the lockdown is still there. We need to assess the situation... It will be the government's decision on how we manage the return of Indians from other countries," Dammu Ravi, COVID-19 coordinator, said at press conference.

"Our ambassadors and high commissioners in all these countries are in regular touch with all Indians abroad and giving all support to them. The MEA COVID control room helplines are active, teams are taking calls and guiding them in these matters. The situation is under control. We will review at a later stage about their return," the MEA official said earlier this month.

'Send us home', plead 220 Indians stranded in Japan amid coronavirus pandemic

Alkali Manufacturers Association of India (AMAI) on Tuesday stressed on the need to exercise caution while using disinfection chemicals directly on human beings as it could be harmful.

AMAI is the representative body of the entire the alkali industry in India that produces chemicals like sodium hypochlorite, chlorine, bleaching solution/powder, used for disinfection.

The industry body said that there have been recent reports in the media on chemicals like sodium hypochlorite solution and hydrogen peroxide being used for disinfection on human beings to control the spread of coronavirus disease.

"Sodium hypochlorite is a strong disinfectant to be used in recommended dilution to disinfect surfaces and objects that are contaminated or infected. Contact with skin can cause itching and irritation leading to skin problems," AMAI said in a statement.

Similarly, hydrogen peroxide is a strong bleaching agent and its use should be restricted to objects and surfaces, the association said.

"The use of these chemicals on the face is even more harmful with chances of ingress into eyes, nostrils and mouth, causing health issues," AMAI said.

The industry body said that there are also instances of special chambers being erected that spray a mist of disinfectant chemicals on people passing or walking through them.

"We are liaising with the government and civic bodies for safe usage of these disinfectants?, said Jayantibhai Patel, President, AMAI.

During these challenging times, AMAI said that its members have stepped up their efforts to maintain adequate supply of disinfection chemicals to supplement the efforts of the government in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

"However, chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide and bleach solutions should be handled with utmost care, avoiding skin contact. In case of contact with skin, the exposed part should be thoroughly washed with a running stream of water," IMAI said.

It recommended that alcohol-based sanitisers should be used to clean hands. Any other part of the body should be cleaned using ordinary soap and water only.

"WHO recommends use of disinfection chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite, chlorine, bleach solution (in recommended dilution) for disinfecting surfaces and objects," AMAI said.

To maintain personal hygiene, WHO also recommends frequent washing of hands with soap and water, it added.

COVID-19 situation report India: 18,601 cases and 590 fatalities

The novel coronavirus, which has killed tens of thousands and turned the world upside down, is believed to have emerged in a wet market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.

Scientists think it originated in bats and could have been passed on via another mammal like a pangolin.

But whether from a bat or a pangolin, the deadly virus originated from the animal world, adding to the list of 'zoonoses' -- the name given to diseases transmitted from animals to humans.

They are not new -- tuberculosis, rabies, toxoplasmosis, dengue, malaria, to name just a few, are all zoonoses.

Beyond the current outbreak of coronavirus, IPBES estimates that zoonoses kill some 7,00,000 people a year.

According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), 60 per cent of human infectious diseases originate from animals.

The figure climbs to 75 per cent for "emerging" diseases such as Ebola, HIV, avian flu, Zika, or SARS, another type of coronavirus.

"The emergence of zoonotic diseases is often associated with environmental changes or ecological disturbances, such as agricultural intensification and human settlement, or encroachments into forests and other habitats," said a 2016 UNEP report.

"Changes in the environment are usually the result of human activities, ranging from land use change to climate change."

Domesticated animals are often a "bridge" between pathogens from the wild and humans.

Researchers have yet to come up with a definitive answer on how the virus migrates to people. The only sure thing, however, is that human activity facilitates the jump.

A study by American researchers published last week and completed before the new coronavirus outbreak identifies rodents, primates and bats as hosts of three-quarters of viruses transmitted to humans.

But domestic animals also carry about 50 per cent of the zoonoses identified.

In terms of endangered wildlife, the study shows that those who share the most viruses with humans are precisely "populations declining due to exploitation and loss of habitat".

The 2016 UNEP report, which noted that "ecosystem integrity underlines human health and development", said effective strategies already exist to control most neglected zoonoses. The main constraint, however, appeared to be "lack of investment".

A research by an international team of researchers has confirmed that the alcohol-based hand disinfectants, recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), are effective against the novel coronavirus.

The findings were published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, according to which the research team exposed Sars-Cov-2 viruses for 30 seconds to the WHO-recommended disinfectant formulations.

Subsequently, the team tested the viruses in cell culture assays and analysed how many viruses remained infectious.

This does not merely apply to the WHO solutions -- their main components, the alcohols ethanol and isopropanol, also showed adequate inactivation of the virus.

The disinfectant one recommended by the WHO consists of 80 volume per cent ethanol, 1.45 volume per cent glycerine and 0.125 volume per cent hydrogen peroxide. Disinfectant two consists of 75 volume per cent isopropanol, 1.45 volume per cent glycerine and 0.125 volume per cent hydrogen peroxide.

The WHO also recommends the use of disinfection chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite, chlorine, bleach solution (in recommended dilution) for disinfecting surfaces and objects.

According to WHO, the most effective way to protect yourself against coronavirus is by frequently cleaning of your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or washing them with soap and water.

Desperate times need desperate measures. Or so they say.

A bright red robot at the district collectorate in Bulandshahr is helping people minimise spread of coronavirus by dispensing sanitiser to staff and visitors. Fitted with sensors, the robot detects human presence and dispenses sanitiser.

Such robots will additionally soon be deployed in hospitals in the district for giving food, water and medicines to patients to help reduce contact between healthcare workers and positive cases.

"We have deployed a robot, made by local engineering students, at COVID-19 control room at the collectorate. The robot is used for giving sanitisers to employees and visitors, thereby avoiding human involvement in the job," District Magistrate, Bulandshahr Ravindra Kumar told PTI.

The robot can work for one to one-and-a-half hours at a stretch after which its battery needs to be recharged. As of now, it will dispense only sanitiser.

The credit for the robot goes to local techies -- Nishant Sharma and Atul Kumar -- both pursuing engineering courses at separate private institutions in Noida.

The robot has a display and speaker through which it can give instructions to patients and display the fed message or slogans. It is controlled through a mobile application.

Till Sunday, Bulandshahr district had reported 15 coronavirus cases of whom two were discharged while one COVID-19 positive patient died.

The Centre has asked states and union territories to strictly comply with the lockdown measures announced to combat the novel coronavirus pandemic and not to dilute them at any level.

In a communication to chief secretaries of state governments and Union Territory administrations, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said some states and UTs are issuing orders allowing activities which have not been allowed as per the guidelines issued by the home ministry under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

"I would again urge you to ensure compliance of the revised consolidated guidelines, and direct all authorities concerned for their strict implementation in letter and spirit without any dilution and to ensure strict compliance of lockdown measures," he said.

The consolidated revised guidelines on the measures to be taken by central ministries and departments, and state and Union Territory governments were issued on April 15 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced extension of the nationwide lockdown till May 3.

The lockdown was earlier from March 25 to April 14.

The home ministry has sought strict implementation of the guidelines in all parts of the country to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The home secretary also drew the attention of the chief secretaries to the guidelines which categorically say that state and Union Territory governments will not dilute them in any manner and strictly enforce the same.

They can, however, impose stricter measures than the guidelines as per the requirement of local areas.

Bhalla also pointed out to a recent Supreme Court observation that all state governments, public authorities and citizens will faithfully comply with the directives and orders issued by the Union of India in letter and spirit in the interest of public safety.

The observations, which must be treated as the directions of the apex court, was conveyed in "my letter dated April 1 to all states and UTs (union territories)", he said.

Toll collection on National Highways has resumed across India.

The central government on March 25, had announced temporary suspension of toll collection following directives by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as well as highway developers resumed collection at toll plazas Monday in line with government directives.

In line with NHAI guidelines, all Project SPVs will take necessary precautions and care at toll plazas for highway users and employees manning the toll plazas. For this, the company has provided adequate masks, sanitisers, hand gloves, etc. to employees manning the toll plazas.

However, All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), protested against resumption of toll on national highways and said it will adversely affect rabi crop procurement, adding that over 85 per cent transporters are cash-starved small operators who will not able to sustain toll fee.

AIMTC is the apex body for transporters that represents about 95 lakh truckers and transport entities, has sought suspension of toll till May 3.

The NHAI had rolled out the electronic toll collection programme across India in December on its over 500 toll plazas while doubling toll charges from the vehicles entering FASTag lanes without the tag.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro came out in public to support a rally that defended military intervention, amid the coronavirus-enforced lockdown.

The president, hence, infringed his own ministry's recommendation to maintain social distancing, prompting criticism across the political spectrum.

On the day Brazil celebrates its army, Bolsonaro made an appearance at the protest held in front of the army's headquarters on Sunday in the capital city of Brasilia. He is a former army captain who waxes nostalgic for the country's 1964-1985 dictatorship.

There, dozens of tightly-packed protesters, many of whom were not wearing masks, were calling for the Supreme Court and Congress to be shut down.

"I am here because I believe in you. You are here because you believe in Brazil," said Bolsonaro.

Many Brazilians were also angered at Bolsonaro's defiance of the stay-at-home measures introduced by several states governors.

Bolsonaro has multiplied public appearances in recent weeks, meeting with supporters, protestors, passersby or business owners.

On Saturday, hundreds of people denouncing pandemic restriction measures opposed by Bolsonaro snarled traffic in major Brazilian cities.

The United States has carried out more tests for the novel coronavirus pandemic than 10 other countries, including India, taken together, President Donald Trump has said.

On Sunday, Trump said that the US continued to make steady progress in its war against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the country had tested 4.18-million people. "That's a record anywhere in the world," he said.

"We have done more testing than all of these countries combined -- France, United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, India, Austria, Australia, Sweden and Canada," Mr Trump told reporters at a news conference in the White House.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in the US crossed 40,000 and the total infections were more than 764,000 so far.

New York, the epicentre of the deadly COVID-19 in the US, has 2,42,000 cases and over 17,600 fatalities so far. It has registered a 50-percent decline in new cases over an eight-day period.

"That's a fantastic climb," Trump said. "That's a beautiful thing to see after going through the opposite."

According to Trump, countries like Italy and Spain, which initially were reluctant in closing their country, had to pay a huge price.

"We would've had millions of people die if we didn't do this," he said, referring to the earlier projections of massive deaths if there were no social-distancing measures and the country was not closed.

More than 95 percent of America's 330 population are under stay-at-home order.

"Instead, it looks like we'll be at about a 60,000-mark, which is 40,000 less than the lowest number (1,00,000) thought of," he said. "It's similar to a flu."

The president listed out the steps being taken by his administration on a war footing to address the challenge posed by the pandemic. "We are doing a great job," he said.

Trump highlighted that the situation continued to improve with the declining trajectory of cases in Seattle, Detroit, New Orleans, Indianapolis and Houston Metro areas.

"More evidence that our aggressive strategy is working and I thank the American people for their selfless devotion," he said. "The American people have done a hell of a job. We're saving countless lives."

Trump assured the people that the country was going to be safe.

"We have to be safe. We don't want to close anything. We're not going to be closing, but we're going to be doing it beautifully, systematically," the president said.

Trump pointed out that the administration was working very well with most of the governors

"A couple of them, no matter what you do, you'll never satisfy them. You could find the cure tomorrow and they wouldn''t be satisfied. They''d find a reason to complain; wise guys," he added.

At least 2,500 people gathered and protested at the Washington state capitol on Sunday in a show of strength against Democratic Governor Jay Inslee’s stay-at-home order.

While the curb was placed to limit the spread of coronavirus, the protestors flouted the rules and did not wear face coverings or masks.

With the estimates at 2,500, this was one of the largest protests in US states against lockdowns over the past week.

Washington state police did not issue any citations, said spokesman Chris Loftis.

US President Donald Trump had, on Friday, tweeted support for similar protests in Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia to "liberate" them from social distancing rules.

Earlier on Sunday, Inslee said state Republican lawmakers were supporting rebellion against his social-distancing rules that have largely shut down the economy.

"Comments in the news by some Republican legislators calling for 'open rebellion,' claiming a 'deep state' plot and other radical statements are irresponsible and could needlessly lead to more people getting sick," Inslee, a Democrat, said in a statement.

"I support free speech. But crowd counts or speeches won’t determine our course. This isn’t about politics. It can only be about doing what is best for the health of all Washingtonians.”

Washington state had the nation’s first confirmed coronavirus case in late January and the first deadly cluster at a nursing home outside Seattle.

Protestors converge at Washington state capitol to rally against coronavirus curbs

Thousands of Israelis demonstrated against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is under criminal indictment in three corruption cases, on Sunday.

The protestors, however, ensured the coronavirus restrictions were strictly followed -- they wore face masks, waved black flags and kept two yards apart.

Demonstrations are allowed under Israel's coronavirus restrictions, as long as participants maintain distance from each other and wear face masks.

Netanyahu, who denies any wrongdoing, is also negotiating a power-sharing deal with his rival Benny Gantz to form a coalition government that would end a year of political deadlock after three inconclusive elections.

Under the banner of "Save the Democracy," protestors called on Gantz's Blue and White party not to join in a coalition led by a premier charged with corruption.

Gantz has campaigned for a clean government, but said that the coronavirus crisis has forced him to go back on his election pledge.

Israel has reported more than 13,000 coronavirus cases and 172 deaths.

Situation report of COVID-19 in India | India battles coronavirus pandemic

Pakistan has started repatriating its citizens, left stranded due to the coronavirus-enforced lockdown, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This comes in the aftermath of UAE threatening to review labour ties with countries refusing to take back their nationals during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The first Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight carrying 227 "stranded passengers" from Dubai and other emirates left for Islamabad on Saturday evening, Pakistan's consulate general in Dubai said in a Twitter post. More flights would depart the UAE from Monday to April 28.

More than 40,000 Pakistanis in the Gulf Arab state have registered with the consulate to return home.

The UAE said last week it would review labour relations with states refusing to evacuate citizens, including those who have lost jobs or been put on leave, after the ambassadors of India and Pakistan said their countries were not yet ready to do so.

To this end, the PIA had said on its website that it would not be able to provide services for inbound flights beyond Islamabad International Airport because of the suspension of domestic flights and a lockdown in the country.

The UAE and other Gulf states have reported increased infections among low-income migrant workers who live in overcrowded quarters. Some have moved to re-house them in shuttered schools or dedicated centres, and are trying to arrange flights to repatriate them.

On Sunday, the UAE announced 479 new cases and four more deaths, bringing its total to 6,781 cases and 41 deaths.

The total infection count in the six Gulf states has risen steadily to more than 26,600, with 167 deaths, despite containment measures. Saudi Arabia, which has the most infections and deaths among Gulf Cooperation Council states, at 9,362 and 97, recorded a record 1,088 new cases in 24 hours.

Moore crossed the finish line six after starting his journey. Media reports indicated that the premise was decorated with balloons. Additionally, soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment formed a guard of honour around him and saluted him.

The NHS is greatly revered in the UK, but remains highly understaffed and underfunded. Moore received tokens of gratitude from healthcare workers across the country.

A day in the life of frontline ambulance staff in coronavirus hit Spain

Officials in the United States are closing in on an agreement on extra money to help small businesses hurt by the coronavirus pandemic and could seal a deal as early as Monday.

The United States has by far the world's largest number of confirmed coronavirus cases, with more than 750,000 infections and over 40,000 deaths.

US President Donald Trump told his daily White House briefing on the crisis that Republicans were "close" to an agreement with Democrats, and suggested there could be a resolution on Monday.

Members of the two parties have been taking shots at one another over the delay in further small-business aid, against a backdrop of protests by Trump supporters of orders for Americans to stay at home, and businesses to remain closed, to prevent the further spread of the virus.

An agreement on an interim deal would end a stalemate over Trump's request to add $250 billion to a small-business loan program established last month as part of a $2.3 trillion coronavirus economic relief plan. That fund has already been exhausted.

Trump told his news briefing that he was in favour of aid to state and local governments, but in future legislation.

House leaders put out a schedule update saying a vote on interim legislation was likely this week, and that the chamber could meet as early as Wednesday.
