Matches are made in heaven, they said. And the heaven can sometimes be a shelter constructed in the wake of a pandemic.

Maria Cecilia Osorio and Alfonso Ardila met just a month ago, in a shelter for people made homeless during Colombia's nationwide coronavirus lockdown.

Osorio, 39, does missionary work and found herself without money to pay rent when the quarantine began in March. She accepted a spot at a shelter in Manizales, in Colombia's coffee region. Ardila, 72, works in construction and, like many informal labourers in the Andean country, saw his work dry up. Unable to pay rent and suffering the after-effects of a head injury he got at work, he too sought refuge at the shelter.

Their serendipitous meeting led to them falling in love, and eventually getting married -- at the same shelter.

The wedding was traditional -- a white dress for the bride, a suit for the groom and a large entourage of around 240 guests.

Both husband and wife are committed Christians and have taken strength from their faith in the midst of the pandemic.

"I came to this place where nobody looked at me or greeted me but here I found someone who loved me and worried about me," Ardila told Reuters, adding that hourly seizures caused by his injury had stopped since he met Osorio.

Osorio's white dress was accented with a blue sash, its train held by two bridesmaids wearing purple dresses and green face masks.

A probe is underway in Vancouver, Canada to nab a man involved in a racist attack on a 92-year-old Asian man with dementia. The old man was thrown to the ground as his attacker shouted slurs about COVID-19, a disease caused by coronavirus.

According to the South China Morning Post, the incident occurred on March 13 on the city’s Eastside, which has long been associated with Vancouver’s working-class Chinese community.

This happened in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic that has been ravaging the entire planet, and is said to have broken out in China's Wuhan city.

The attack was captured on video that was released with a plea to the public to identify the suspect.

Vancouver police said on Wednesday that the attack was part of a wave of anti-Asian hate crimes in this western Canadian city linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

The victim had just been reported missing by his family when he wandered into a convenience store and encountered his attacker.

The silent CCTV footage shows the small East Asian man being forcefully thrown out of a convenience store by his attacker -- balding with a goatee beard, and heavy gold chains around his wrist and neck.

The old man was unhurt. The victim had wandered into the store, whose staff were trying to help him, “when the suspect began yelling racist remarks at the victim that included comments about COVID-19”.

China on Thursday announced an additional USD 30 million grant to the World Health Organisation. The grant will be in addition to the USD 20 million provided by China earlier to the WHO.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang made the announcement at a media briefing.

Beijing's response came a day after Trump announced to put a "very powerful" hold on US' funding to the WHO, accusing the UN agency of being "very China-centric" and criticising it for having "missed the call" in its response to the coronavirus pandemic.

He said China would always support the Geneva-based WHO in playing an important role in international public health and global anti-epidemic response.

Both China and the WHO faced serious criticism over lack of transparency especially about the discovery of the coronavirus in December last year and its silent spread in Wuhan until Beijing imposed lockdown in the city on January 23.

By that time, over five million people from Wuhan were reported to have left for holiday destinations at home and abroad to celebrate the Chinese new year, which many allege resulted in the spreading of the deadly virus worldwide.

China has denied the allegations of any cover-up, saying it was the first country to report COVID-19 to the WHO.

A New Zealand nurse who treated British Prime Minister Boris Johnson while he was in hospital with the coronavirus said she saw the world leader as "just another patient" and that she thought he was joking when he singled her out for praise.

Jenny McGee, who has worked for the National Health Service since 2010, told a New Zealand television station that she was unfazed by the task of caring for Johnson, who received the same care as any other patient and "absolutely needed to be there".

"There was a lot of media interest about him being in hospital and, to be honest, that was the toughest," McGee told TVNZ in an interview which aired on Thursday, her first public remarks since the episode.

"As a unit, he was just another patient we were trying to do our best for, so it was business as usual. It was just another day at the office," McGee added.

Johnson, 55, was taken to Guys and St Thomas' hospital on April 5 after his symptoms for COVID-19 worsened and he was moved into intensive care the following day, remaining there until April 9.

On being discharged on April 12, Johnson said in a video message, "the NHS saved my life, no question". He named and thanked the nurses who had cared for him, including "Jenny from New Zealand".

When Johnson sent that public message, McGee said in the interview, she was getting ready for her nightshift and a friend texted her the update.

"My first reaction was that it was a joke," she said.

As McGee carried out intensive care duties, she and said she and the prime minister "spent a lot of time together and we talked away about NZ", particularly about her home city of Invercargill, which she said he took an interest in.

After shifts caring for the British leader, she said she would get in her car and "hear things about Boris Johnson on the news that was very surreal because I thought 'wow, I've been looking after him'".

"But I really wasn't fazed by looking after Boris Johnson," she added.

Johnson wasn't the only national leader to congratulate McGee, who acknowledged she took longer than planned to respond to a message from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, saying "it's very surreal to have a message from Jacinda. She's a hero of mine."

Once the nurse did respond to the New Zealand leader, the two shared "a little bit of banter which again was surreal, (and) a couple of emojis".

Most children with COVID-19 may exhibit only mild symptoms, if any, requiring only supportive care, with good prognosis and full recovery possible within one to two weeks, according to a review of studies, which presents the clinical manifestation of the disease in the young people.

The research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, assessed 18 studies with a total of 1065 participants from China and Singapore, who were mostly pediatric patients with the novel coronavirus infection.

According to the researchers, including those from the University of Pavia in Italy, most pediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection presented with fever, dry cough, and fatigue, or were asymptomatic.

They said only one infant presented with pneumonia, complicated by shock and kidney failure, and was successfully treated with intensive care.

Most pediatric patients were hospitalised, and symptomatic children received mainly supportive care with no deaths reported in the age range of 0 to 9 years, the scientists noted in the study.

The researchers believe that defining the clinical characteristics and severity of the disease in large cohorts of patients is an urgent need.

While data are available for adult patients with COVID-19, limited reports analyse pediatric patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, they said.

In this context, the current review study of COVID-19 in children and adolescents sheds light on the clinical features, diagnostic tests, current therapeutic management, and prognosis.

Fever and cough were the main symptoms, the researchers said, adding that both were reported in six of the included studies.

Only one case of a 13-month-old infant reported severe symptoms.

The scientists said this patient developed vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and pneumonia, complicated by shock with metabolic acidosis and kidney failure that required intensive care and assisted ventilation.

Among the two studies which presented gastrointestinal complications from COVID-19, vomiting was described as the primary clinical manifestation.

Except for the single case of severe infection, none of the included patients required oxygen or assisted ventilation, the scientists noted.

They said in general, the patients had a good medical outcome, however, one death was reported in the age range of 10 to 19 years.

Based on the analysis, the scientists said pediatric patients acquired infections mainly through close contact with their parents or other family members.

Citing a case study, they added that COVID-19 infection might affect newborns who acquired the infection from the mother, suggesting a possible perinatal-peripartum transmission.

However, they said larger studies need to be conducted to confirm this.

The scientists added that there were a few limitations to their analysis method.

They said the research occurred over a brief 3-month period with nearly all the studies from Chinese reports, as European and US studies in children with COVID-19 were not available, at the time this review was conducted.

So the review research could not assess possible clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic differences, and compare pediatric results with data from adults with SARS-CoV-2 infection, the researchers noted in the study.

The scientists were also unable to evaluate any possible correlation between viral burden and clinical symptoms.

They said the lack of data on pediatric patients require further epidemiologic and clinical studies to identify possible preventive and therapeutic strategies.

United States President Donald Trump has said he would halt issuing of new Green Cards or legal permanent residency for the next 60 days as part of his executive order to temporarily suspend immigration into the US.

The move will, however, not have any impact on those entering the country on a temporary basis.

Trump said he would sign an executive order to suspend all immigration into the US on Tuesday, citing the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic as the reason.

It is being said that as a result of the pandemic, more than 22 million American workers have applied for unemployment benefits, which is a record in itself. In the coming weeks, several more millions are expected to being laid off as the US economy is in tatters.

"We must first take care of the American worker. This pause will be in effect for 60 days, after which need for any extension or modification will be evaluated by myself and a group of people based on economic conditions at the time," Trump told reporters at his daily White House news conference on coronavirus.

"This order will only apply to individuals seeking a permanent residency, in other words, those receiving green cards, big factor, will not apply to those entering on a temporary basis," he asserted.

Without elaborating, he said that there will be exemptions.

"By pausing immigration, we'll help put unemployed Americans first in line for jobs as America reopens," he said.

Trump said, moving forward, his administration would examine what additional immigration related measures should be put in place to protect US workers.

"We want to protect our US workers, and I think as we move forward, we will become more and more protective of them," he said indicating that more such measures are being prepared.

Trump said that this pause on new immigration will also help to conserve vital medical resources for American citizens.

As per the existing law, the US can issue a maximum of 1,40,000 employment-based Green Cards every year with a per country cap of seven per cent.

Accordingly, in fiscal year 2019, Indian nationals received 9,008 category 1 (EB1), 2,908 category 2 (EB2), and 5,083 category 3 (EB3) green cards. EB1-3 are different categories of employment-based Green Cards.

The local authority in the area where the seafarer resides will be intimated about his clearance for sign-on and for issue of a transit pass from the place of residence to the place of embarkation on the shipping vessel.

The transit pass for such movement by road, for the seafarer and one driver, may be issued by the government of the State or Union Territory where the seafarer resides.

For sign-off, the master of a vessel, coming from any foreign port, or a coastal vessel from any Indian port, while arriving at its port of call in India, shall ascertain the state of health of each person on board the vessel and submit a Maritime Declaration of Health to the health authorities of the port and to the port authorities.

In addition, the information required by the local health authorities of the port, like temperature chart, individual health declaration, etc. Shall also be provided by the master as per the directives of the health authorities of the port.

Port health authorities shall grant pratique to the vessel prior to berthing as per necessary health protocols.

The Indian seafarer arriving on the vessel would undergo the COVID-19 test for confirmation that he or she is negative for the infection.

After disembarking and till the time the seafarer reaches the testing facility within the port premises, it will be ensured by the ship owner that all safety precautions as per standard health protocol are observed.

Till the time test reports of the seafarer are received, they shall be kept in the quarantine facility by the port or the state health authorities.

If the seafarer is tested as positive for COVID-19, he or she will be dealt with as per the procedures laid down by Health Ministry.

For the seafarer tested negative and signed off, the local authority in the area where the seafarer disembarks will be intimated about his or her clearance for sign-off, and for issue of a transit pass from the place of disembarkation to the place of his or her residence.

The social distancing and other hygiene norms, as per standard health protocol, would be followed by the vehicle transporting the seafarer to his destination.

The lockdown was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 in a bid to combat the coronavirus pandemic. It was later extended till May 3.

A second wave of the novel coronavirus may hit the US later this year with even more difficult ramifications than the current COVID-19 crisis, a top American health official has warned.

The current coronavirus crisis has claimed more than 45,000 lives and infected over 824,000 people in the country.

Centre for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield told The Washington Post that the US will have the flu epidemic and the coronavirus epidemic at the same time. If the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak and the flu season had peaked at the same time, it could have been "really, really difficult in terms of health capacity".

Luckily, the arrival of the novel coronavirus in the United States came as the regular flu season was waning, he said.

Meanwhile, the White House has emphasised on continuing with preventive measures to fight the coronavirus and increased testing.

Officials are hoping by the time the situation worsens, the administration would have additional treatment options for people with COVID-19 so that there will be additional treatment available in the fall.

A migrant couple from Rajasthan, stranded in Tripura due to the coronavirus-enforced lockdown, has named its newborn baby ‘Lockdown’.

Sanjay Bauri said he and his pregnant wife, Manju, had come to Tripura from Dausa district of Rajasthan six months ago to sell toys, steel utensils and plastic products on the streets of Agartala.

“My wife gave birth to a baby boy at the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital here six days ago. We named him ‘Lockdown’ remembering all the problems we had to face during this tough time,” Bauri told reporters.

The baby was born on April 13.

"The baby is fine. We are getting food from the administration. He is fine," Bauri said.

Many hawkers like the Bauri couple who had come to Tripura from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, got stranded in the northeastern state due to the lockdown.

Including them, 63 migrant vendors are left stranded in Badharghat.

"We tried to return to our native places and went to Badharghat Railway Station, only to find the train services suspended," Bauri said.

Manju wants to return home as soon as the lockdown is lifted. “We will leave for our village as soon as the lockdown is lifted. But we will never forget the kind gesture of the GRP personnel," he said.

Earlier, a Raipur couple named their newborn twins -- Corona and Covid. The twins, they said, would remind them about all the hardships they conquered amid the lockdown.

The twins were born on the intervening night of March 26-27 at a government hospital in Raipur.

However, the couple said they may change their decision later and rename their kids.

China reported 30 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, a majority of them coming from abroad, taking the number of imported infections in the country to 1,610. To this end, China has scaled-up testing and treatment for COVID-19 infections in border areas.

Of the total imported cases, 811 people are being treated with 41 in severe conditions.

The death toll due to the novel coronavirus remained 4,632 with no new fatalities being reported on Tuesday. The overall case tally climbed to 82,788, of which 1,005 patients are still being treated and 77,151 have been discharged, China's National Health Commission (NHC) said.

A total of 42 new asymptomatic cases, including seven from abroad, were reported on Tuesday, taking the total to 991 asymptomatic cases. All of them were under medical observation, the NHC said in a report.

With an over 22,000-km land border dotted with 91 land ports, along with a large number of shortcuts and side routes, China faces a high risk of coronavirus importation via its land border, Xinhua report said.

However, the medical service capacity in some border regions is relatively insufficient for the epidemic response. Hence, groups of medical professionals and epidemic containment experts have been dispatched to some border areas facing a mounting challenge of imported cases, such as Suifenhe, a border city in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

The essential medical equipment, including mobile P3 laboratories, computerised tomography (CT) scan machines, have also been sent there to improve the local ability to detect and cure COVID-19 infections.
