A man who has been accused of playing a role in the 1991 killing of his wife was extradited earlier this month from Costa Rica, ending his more than three decades on the run, said the US police, on Monday (Jan 22).&nbsp;

In 2022, the man suspected of his wife’s murder, Jose Lazaro Cruz, 60, was arrested in Costa Rica and brought back to Fairfax County, Virginia, earlier this month, ending the 32-year-old case.

<h2>About the case</h2>

On April 30, 1991, the police responded to a call about the stabbing and found Ana Jurado, 24, dead in the street, said Eli Cory, Fairfax County’s deputy chief of investigation. She is said to have suffered a slashing wound to her neck and bled to death, according to the police.&nbsp;

Lazaro Cruz, who was Jurado’s then-estranged husband was identified as the suspected killer and charged a month later, but he fled.&nbsp;

Jurado was the mother of three at the time of her death. Her three-year-old and seven-month-old daughters lived with her in the US while her four-year-old son lived in El Salvador.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Not a typical cold case’</h2>

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, as per CNN, said this case is not a “traditional cold case” as Lazaro Cruz was identified right away, he was just “on the lam.”

According to the police, Lazaro Cruz, after the murder tried to flee to Canada but was refused entry due to falsified documents. Cory also said that one of the border agents said they noticed what appeared to be a “fresh cut” on his hand at the time.

The suspected murderer then managed to evade authorities and travelled to Houston, Texas, from where he is believed to have been smuggled out of the United States with the help of a smuggler, eventually ending up in El Salvador.&nbsp;

However, at the time, El Salvador did not have any mechanisms or policies in place which would allow Lazaro Cruz’s extradition. It was not until 2000, that the country’s constitution was amended, which allowed extradition of Salvadoran nationals.

In 2022, the US Justice Department said that Lazaro Cruz had been detained by Costa Rican authorities while trying to enter their country from Nicaragua.&nbsp;

During a recent expedition aboard the Falkor research ship, operated by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, 18 international scientists captured remarkable footage using an underwater camera on a remotely operated vehicle.

The footage showcases the hatching of baby octopuses, mothers protecting their young from predators, and potentially even a new species of octopus.

<h2>Significance of the discovery</h2>

Jyotika Virmani, a physical oceanographer from the Schmidt Ocean Institute who spoke to Science Alert,&nbsp;highlighted&nbsp;the significance of this discovery, stating that it emphasises the vast amount "we still have to learn about the ocean".

The newly found nursery is situated at an unnamed outcrop in previously unexplored territory, with brooding octopuses observed near low-temperature hydrothermal vents at approximately 7°C (44.6°F).

The researchers suspect that they may have encountered nursing octopuses belonging to a new species within the Muusocotpus genus, which notably lacks ink sacs.

While the brooding behaviour of deep-sea octopuses&nbsp;remains largely enigmatic, previous studies have revealed that one species (Graneledone boreopacifica) broods its eggs for approximately 53 months.

Although the newly observed species falls within the Muusoctopus genus, the size of its eggs is similar to those of G. boreopacifica.

Beth Orcutt, a geomicrobiologist from the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, explains that the discovery of these low-temperature vent sites was a challenging task that required the use of submersible vehicles like the Schmidt Ocean Institute's advanced ROV SuBastian.

The initial revelation of the Dorado Outcrop nursery had already garnered considerable attention.

The sighting of around one hundred female octopuses brooding near hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean off Costa Rica marked the first time scientists had observed such behaviour.

In 2018, it was confirmed that the Davidson Seamount off the coast of California held the largest known deep-sea octopus nursery.

Initially, no developing embryos were found at the Dorado Outcrop, leading researchers to believe that the environment might be too warm for viable offspring. However, their doubts were dispelled when they were fortunate enough to witness the hatching of the octopus babies.

The expedition did not conclude with the nurseries' discovery; the team also explored five previously unknown seamounts in Costa Rican waters. Seamounts, which are shallow areas with steep slopes protruding from the seafloor, are often rich in marine life.

While some seamounts off the coast of Costa Rica have been protected by the government, others, particularly those along the northwest edge of the Pacific Ocean, have received less attention.

The team discovered an abundance of life surrounding these seamounts, with hundreds of animals, including potentially new species like the peculiar tripod fish, awaiting classification. It was as if the scientists had stumbled upon a hidden treasure trove of biodiversity.

The study published in Biology Letters — titled "Discovery of facultative parthenogenesis in a new world crocodile" — said that the female crocodile used a strange reproductive strategy, a method which may have its evolutionary roots in the age of the dinosaurs.

"[T]his discovery offers tantalizing insights into the possible reproductive capabilities of the extinct archosaurian relatives of crocodilians and birds, notably members of Pterosauria and Dinosauria," writes the team of researchers led by evolutionary biologist Warren Booth from Virginia Tech.&nbsp;

Part of the study read the ability of sexually reproducing species to generate offspring without the genetic contributions of males was once considered rare.&nbsp;

The researchers from Virginia Tech have analysed the foetus. The researchers specialise in parthenogenesis and they published their findings in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.&nbsp;

As quoted by Sky News, they said that the discovery suggests virgin births could be happening in crocodiles without anyone realising it.&nbsp;

"It is not uncommon for captive reptiles to lay clutches of eggs, given the period of isolation from mates, these would normally be considered non-viable and discarded. These findings, therefore, suggest that eggs should be assessed for potential viability when males are absent," they said.&nbsp;

"Furthermore, given that (virgin births) can occur in the presence of potential mates, instances of this may be missed when reproduction occurs in females co-habited with males," they added.&nbsp;

The study found that "genome-wide maternal heterozygosity was 0.349, compared to 0.045 for the offspring, demonstrating a significant reduction in heterozygosity in the offspring when compared to the mother".&nbsp;

"Regardless of the dataset evaluated, the offspring retained approximately 3% of the maternal heterozygosity (table 1), supporting FP through terminal fusion automixis as the mode of reproduction," it added.&nbsp;

Researchers believe that new antibiotics can be discovered from the fur of Costa Rican sloths as they may harbour antibiotic-producing bacteria. The theory has come up after experts noticed that these tropical animals never get sick and appear to be surprisingly infection-proof.&nbsp;

Scientists hope that they may find a solution to the growing problem of "superbugs", which are resistant to medicines that are available to us.&nbsp;

Max Chavarria of the University of Costa Rica told the news agency AFP that the sloths have a unique biotope of insects, algae and bacteria in their coats, that apparently protects them.&nbsp;

Chavarria took fur samples taken from sloths at the sanctuary to examine in his laboratory for the research, which began in 2020, and has already pinpointed 20 "candidate" microorganisms waiting to be named.&nbsp;

But he said there is a long road ahead in determining whether the sloth compounds could be useful to humans.&nbsp;

The study, published in the journal Environmental Microbiology, has found that the sloth fur is hosting different communities of microbes, but some of which could pose disease risks.&nbsp;

Chavarria told the news agency: "If you look at the sloth's fur, you see movement: you see moths, you see different types of insects... a very extensive habitat."&nbsp;

He said, "Obviously when there is co-existence of many types of organisms, there must also be systems that control them."&nbsp;

For further analyses, Chavarria with his team took fur samples from Costa Rican two- and three-toed sloths to understand it better and found that the possible existence of antibiotic-producing bacteria that "makes it possible to control the proliferation of potentially pathogenic bacteria... or inhibit other competitors" such as fungi.&nbsp;

In Costa Rica, the sloth is a national symbol. These slo-mo animals are a major tourist attraction in the Central American country. Sloths are mostly found hanging from tall trees in cloud and rain forests and can also be seen some of them tucked onto a tree branch.&nbsp;

Materials from the volcano's lagoon were expelled to the northern side of the cone and reached surrounding rivers. The report said that the explosion occurred on Friday afternoon. &nbsp;

The CNE is currently monitoring the situation. In a series of tweets, it said early Saturday advised people not to go near the Pénjamo, Azúl and Azufrada rivers. The agency also said information was being collected about the activity of the volcano, adding there was no impact on people and infrastructure.&nbsp;

Reports: Plane crashes off the Costa Rican coast, six people missing

On Sunday, the authorities indicated that at least 9 people are dead while several others have been injured following an accident where a bus and two other vehicles amid heavy rains and landslides plunged into a ravine in Costa Rica. Meanwhile, approximately 55 people were rescued and taken to the hospital.&nbsp;

The landslide was near a mountain pass called El Hundimiento in Costa Rica’s Alajuela Province which is around 80 kilometres away from the capital San Jose. Rescue efforts were underway since Saturday night after the double-decker bus fell into a 75-meter ravine. In a statement on Twitter after the accident the Red Cross said, “As of now, we know of nine people who did not have vital signs.”&nbsp;

According to the Costa Rican Social Security which is in charge of the country's public health services, more than 50 people including the bus driver have been pulled out. While the Red Cross has estimated the number of passengers to be at least 60.&nbsp;

According to the local police, firefighters and emergency teams worked through Sunday to recover the bodies. The bus was on a route between San Jose and the northwestern province of Santa Cruz de Guanacaste. Reportedly, locals in the area have blamed the accident on the lack of signage and protective barriers along the road.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Institute on Sunday said that the intense rains may continue in the coastal areas. Amid the intense rains following a severe damage, hundreds of families had to be evacuated. &nbsp;

Costa Rica President Rodrigo Chaves announced three-day mourning on Sunday and said, “This situation in which many families lose their belongings is really sad and worrying.” The president has also reportedly cancelled his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly because of the emergency caused by heavy rains in the country.&nbsp;

Costa Rica has been described as the "happiest" country in Latin America and praised for its environmental policies and eco-tourism, but the vital tourism industry was hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Alongside Peru, it suffered the largest fall in employment figures in the region between 2019 and 2020.

"The next president has to change everything because we're very poor. There is no work here, there is nothing," said Ana Briceno, 64, a travel agent in the capital San Jose.

"In the last years with Carlos Alvarado the situation has been very difficult ... so I think the future president must focus on the economy," said Cristina Aguilar, 32.

Given their previous troubles, the two candidates have sought to keep the debate swirling around the economy.

"The urgent themes to address are the ones causing discomfort and suffering to the people," said Chaves, 60, a surprise qualifier for Sunday's run-off, having polled fourth ahead of February's first round.

"The first is the lack of jobs. Secondly, the cost of living."

Chaves, from the newly formed right-wing Social Democratic Progress Party, led the most recent opinion polls, with more than 41 percent support, compared to 38 percent for Figueres.

Figueres, 67, who was president from 1994 to 1998, is equally focused on the economy.

"In the economic agenda, unemployment is the most important, the creation of employment opportunities is the priority," he said.

Figueres, whose father Jose abolished the army in 1948 when he was president, topped the first round of voting among a crowded field of 25 contenders with 27.3 percent, ahead of Chaves who had 16.8 percent.

But they were a long way from the 40 percent needed to win outright.

&nbsp;'Misinterpreted' jokes&nbsp;

Both men have reached this final stage of the election despite the specter of past scandals.

Chaves, who spent six months as finance minister in the outgoing government, was investigated over sexual harassment&nbsp;complaints brought by multiple women while he was a senior official at the World Bank, where he worked for 30 years.

The ex-president, who worked abroad at the time as executive director of the World Economic Forum (WEF), refused to give evidence in the case in 2004 and returned to Costa Rica only in 2011 when the investigation expired.

"Right now, I don't know who I will vote for ... because Chaves contradicts himself in everything and given what Figueres did last time, it leaves us undecided," said Jairo Montero, 37.

In the unlikely event the election ends in a draw, Costa Rican law says the elder candidate would win, in this case Figueres.&nbsp;

The first results are expected at around 8:30 pm.&nbsp;
