Noting that eight out of 10 of those aged 75 and over had the jab, a Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said “It’s inaccurate to say that a significant number of people didn’t take up their spring booster.”

It comes after Britain became the first country to give a green light to a variant-adapted shot that targets both the original and Omicron version of the virus.

The so-called bivalent vaccine made by US drug company Moderna was approved by the UK medicines regulator (MHRA) as a booster for adults.

News agency Reuters reported that the World Health Organization said began tracking BA.4 and BA.5 because of they have new mutations “that need to be further studied to understand their impact on immune escape potential.”

According to a WHO report, both subvariants have additional mutations in the spike region, a part of the virus that is used to invade human cells, and unique mutations outside of that region.

After data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed an increase in cases, a leading scientist has warned the United Kingdom to brace itself against a new wave of COVID-19.

''We will have a new wave of infections this month,'' Professor Christina Pagel, from University College London, told a briefing of the Independent Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies.

''Now hopefully it won't be as high as the previous two waves and might be lower. But we can't count on that and either way, we are going to see more people becoming infected.''

An estimated 797,500 people (1 in 70) in England and 27,700 (1 in 65) in Northern Ireland would have tested positive for Covid in the week ending 2 June, up from 784,100 and 24,300 respectively in the week before, according to the survey conducted by ONS.

Leading scientist warns UK to brace itself against new wave of COVID-19

According to Britain's Office of National Statistics(ONS), over seven out of ten&nbsp;people in England have had COVID-19 since the pandemic began in 2020.

The agency said 71 per cent citizens living in England were estimated to have contracted the virus between April 2020 and February 2022.

Britain is one of the worst-hit countries hit by the virus with over 22 million cases and over 173,980 COVID-19 deaths in the last two years.

The ONS however added that&nbsp;the death rate due to the virus had fallen this year with the Omicron variant&nbsp;showing mild symptoms although hospitalisations in England and Wales had shot up.

England has also relaxed quarantine rules for foreigners, however, authorities this week had added Thailand and Montenegro to the "red list" requiring travellers who return from these countries to enter into quarantine in a hotel.&nbsp;

England's "green list" includes Canada, Switzerland, Denmark where citizens can travel without requiring quarantine on return.

This represents a 50 per cent increase over the study's previous findings, which showed that 0.1 per cent of people, or 1 in 1,000, had the virus as of May 3rd.

The scientists of the Imperial College London, believe that the reproduction number (R) in the most recent testing cycle was 1.44. This indicates that on average, 10 infected people will spread the virus to 14 others, resulting in a rapid spread of the pandemic.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a leading UK government health official has stated that the world would only be free of COVID-19 once the entire global population has been vaccinated.&nbsp;

The vaccinations are believed to be quite efficient at avoiding serious illness caused by the variants.

However, there is concern that escalating case numbers will result in death tolls similar to earlier waves, which have claimed the lives of 127,945 people.

At least 60 arrested in anti-lockdown protests in London

More than 1,800 students and staff from universities across the north-east of England, currently under tougher localised lockdowns, tested positive for coronavirus over the past week.

Newcastle University said 1,003 students and 12 members of staff were confirmed to have been infected with coronavirus in the past week, compared with 94 last Friday. At Northumbria University, there were also 619 new cases and Durham University confirmed 219 cases in students in the last week.

Most universities are planning to switch to online teaching for at least three weeks, except in cases where in-person lessons are essential.

Newcastle University said "the overwhelming majority of cases" were from "social and residential settings" and said appropriate measures were being taken to protect everyone on campus.

"We expected to see cases rise in light of the increase in cases both locally and nationally and all HE (higher education) institutions have to manage this on an ongoing basis," a spokesperson said.

"We feel confident that we have appropriate measures in place to protect us all while we are on campus and to reduce the potential for transmission in our community," the spokesperson said.

Durham University has asked students living in two colleges to remain on campus for the next week following the sharp rise in cases and Northumbria University said it was "continuing to make extensive efforts" to provide support for its self-isolating students with online concierge services or food parcels delivered by staff and the students' union.

Meanwhile, Leeds University said 555 students and three staff members tested positive between September 28 and October 4.

"We are acutely aware that behind each number is an individual with their own needs and concerns, and ensuring the safety, health and wellbeing of everyone is our absolute priority," said the university's Vice Chancellor Professor Simone Buitendijk.

Manchester's two main universities - Manchester University and Manchester Metropolitan University - had earlier announced suspension of all in-person teaching for the rest of October, with the exemption of a few practical training courses.

People could get a drink in a pub, have a meal in a restaurant or get a haircut for the first time in over three months on Saturday as England took its biggest steps yet towards resumption of normal life.

Pubs were allowed to start serving from 6 a.m., sparking worries of over-indulgence on what the media dubbed a “Super Saturday” of coronavirus restrictions being eased. Some hairdressers were reported to have opened at the stroke of midnight.

The Holland Tringham pub in south London, part of the JD Wetherspoon chain, opened at 8 a.m. and was about three quarters full by 11.20 am.

“It’s beautiful just to get back and have a pint,” said Jim Martin, a 56-year old carpenter.

Julie Scott, a 43-year-old teacher, was there with her family for drinks and food.

“I think it’s just where everyone gets to socialise and catch up with people that they haven’t seen...it’s nice to just get together,” she said.

Dr Bishwajeet Elangbam, is a consultant in emergency medicine in the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS trust in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;

The hospital based in Birmingham is the second worst-affected city in the UK which alone has witnessed more than 250 deaths due to COVID-19.&nbsp;

Dr Elangam who was also a part of the SARS team when it had hit the UK, shares his experiences with WION on the nature of the pathogen and the knowledge gathered during his days of attending to the survivors.

WION: You have seen people suffering with COVID-19 since day one in your hospital. Can you please share your experiences since the first positive cases were reported and then resulting in casualties?

Dr Bishwajeet Elangbam: We first heard about the outbreak of this pandemic in Wuhan and on Jan 27, then we did first testing of our mask, we were preparing ourself by making ensure our masks were fitted to our face, and I still remember on Feb 1, we did a simulation for our department.

In order to look after our patients. We had a separate room for coronavirus, we called it corona post- for looking at suspected patients, with the hope of not contracting it with anyone in the hospital.&nbsp;

On February 10, I saw my first suspected patient, he had a travel history to China and Hong Kong.

We were looking at many suspected patients. The first confirmed case reported on March 5 in Birmingham and on March 14, the first positive case was reported in our hospital, since the last six weeks things have changed a lot from the data we have recorded unfortunate deaths of around 250 patients and 870 confirmed positive cases.&nbsp;

A lot of patients are coming to our hospital. I was among the team to deal during the SARS period, &nbsp;we thought, we should be ok but we were worried as the number of mortality increased in Wuhan and in Italy, even though we had the experience from the past, there was a lot of apprehension among our colleagues.&nbsp;

WION: Now across the globe the fight against the virus is underway. What do you suggest as a precaution since there seems very little clarity on the nature of the virus,&nbsp;its mode of attack at humans and how and when it affects us?

Dr Bishwajeet Elangbam: COVID-19 virus is a very very contagious virus. It is similar to common flu, common cold - transmits through droplets, it can transfer when you cough, sneeze, through our sputum. It's very very highly contagious. What we can do about it?&nbsp;

We are happy to share the information that Oxford have started clinical trial of a vaccine on humans and we are hopeful that by September, we should have a viable vaccine that is safe, but according to the CMO UK government, it feels that it may take around 1 year or 18 months.&nbsp;

Come next year, we should have some idea of from where the vaccine are coming through by the end of year, we have a long time to go, meanwhile, various countries are taking several measures to stop the transmission - lockdown is going on, this is very, very important, lockdown is just to buy some time to decrease the transmission and we can prepare ourself, when we say, "we" - it includes everyone, healthcare providers and the public. &nbsp;

Handwashing and social distancing is the way to minimize the transmission, and we should strictly follow the rules set by the government and keep a good hygiene habit.

WION: As you have been directly dealing with this new deadly virus, what is your advice to the people when should they go for a test, any set of measures that one can take up before going for test?

Dr Bishwajeet Elangbam: Tests are&nbsp;being done according to the strategy of respective countries - for example, in be UK we started with the containment phase, where we were swabbing people in the community and we were doing tests for the people who were coming to the hospital.&nbsp;

Now in the UK, we are doing delayed phase testing that is swabbing for people who are admitted in hospitals only and key workers who are working in the frontline.&nbsp;

If you have been in contact with any positive individuals and you are feeling unwell take advice from the hospital through helplines or doctors first through phone and fix a time for your visit, so that the hospital can prepare or to avoid other patients putting them at risk

WION: As you know India is moving towards a critical stage, what would be your advice or best practices that should be followed in the healthcare sectors or for the public?

Dr Bishwajeet Elangbam: I saw in India that the curve has been flattening, my advice to the people is - please follow the government order, wash your hands regularly, keep social distancing, follow hygiene advice strictly, lockdown is just a means to buy time to prevent mass spreading before vaccines are made.&nbsp;

I repeat - remember lockdown is only meant to buy time, we may become infected with the viruses with some way or the other if we don't take care of ourselves.&nbsp;

WION: Tell us from your experiences how does this disease attacks the human body- does it give time once it enters the human body, which part or parts are the most vulnerable?

Dr Bishwajeet Elangbam:&nbsp;&nbsp;This virus is just like common flu,&nbsp;it attacks in two ways-&nbsp; first, the virus loads into the upper respiratory tract infection that is how we have sore throat and sneezing.

Eight per cent of patients have flu or cold-like symptom another 14 per cent to 20 per cent are quite unwell, what happens is - if the person has immunity compromised like diabetes or cancer treatment when the virus came in the body, then the body reacts - the inflammatory response can be quite high and the person can feel very unwell and the second is immune response phase which is somewhere 6,7,8,9 days, the body tries to fight against the virus - unfortunately it starts to fight too strong that it attacks its own organ like kidney, lung, brain which leads to respiratory failure, kidney failure.&nbsp;

These are two phases is how this virus attacks the human body. Most of them recover but around 5 per cent of patients succumb to the virus. &nbsp;

Many of the patients come to hospital needing oxygen around 28 per cent, they improve after 4/5 days. Another group who are very unwell with very low oxygen level, they deteriorate within hours and its so fast that we have little time to treat them.&nbsp;

People who have diabetes, are obese, people who used to smoking have a higher rate of death.&nbsp;

WION: We also know about the clinical trial of a vaccine that's happening in the UK, can you share with us any information about the nature of the trial, what can one hope?&nbsp;

Dr Bishwajeet Elangbam: The Oxford team is doing the trial for a vaccine. The vaccine is the only way that can save us from this virus.

They are studying around 510 volunteers, they are expecting a result by September and hoping for a good result, until then we have to take care of our family, our loved ones till the vaccine&nbsp;comes out.&nbsp;

We need to behave as responsible individuals and as responsible citizens to fight this deadly virus.

According to the EFL chairman Rick Parry, he is working on a coronavirus action plan so that the clubs of the league return in the first week of the June. The games will be held behind closed doors only if get a green light from the UK government.&nbsp;

Parry has written to the clubs talking about a 56-day window in which the league could be completed so that the next season does not face major turbulence due to the halted season.&nbsp;

The EFL has made pressure funds of £50m available to clubs to help them through the crisis, and the Premier League has offered savings of £125m.

The EFL is plodding towards an initial three-week mini pre-season starting on May 16 - if the government says it is safe to do so.

"The individual fitness programmes players have been doing will be ramped up to make sure they are not coming back cold.&nbsp;

"If we are working towards a start in the first weekend of June, coming back on May 16 would give the players three weeks to get match fit.&nbsp;

“This gives us something to work towards and of course everything will be done with Government advice."
