South African city of Cape Town’s public transport system has been paralysed after a taxi strike began last week, which has since turned violent and led to the death of two people, said the police on Monday (August 7). Australia and the United Kingdom issued a travel warning about the potential danger of travelling to Cape Town.

<h2>About the recent violence</h2>

At least two people were allegedly shot dead in separate incidents during the taxi strike in Cape Town on Monday morning, said the police. The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said that the first death occurred when a driver fired shots at a person who was allegedly pelting stones at the vehicles.&nbsp;

“An individual was shot dead and three others injured after a motorist was pelted with stones on Airport Approach Road. The driver responded to the attack by firing several shots,” said Potelwa, as quoted by News24. An investigation has been launched into the incident.&nbsp;

The police on Monday also found the body of a 28-year-old man who had been shot multiple times, said the local media report. Separately, a report by AFP citing local officials said that a police officer was shot dead in a vehicle while patrolling a township 20 kilometres southeast of Cape Town, on Friday night.&nbsp;

“(The) possibility that the attack is related to the ongoing taxi strike cannot be ruled out,” said the police, adding that the officers were “performing crime prevention patrols to quell taxi related incidents”.&nbsp;

According to reports, multiple vehicles have been set on fire and several roads have been blocked due to the protests, which have since left thousands of commuters stranded.

In a statement, the local officials said that two government vehicles had been set on fire and one had been hijacked. This was in addition to four other incidents of torching and stoning of private vehicles and shootings, on Monday, in “clear attempts to target City staff and infrastructure,” the statement added.

As many as 30 people have been arrested, as per local media reports.

<h2>What is the taxi strike about?</h2>

The drivers of the minibus taxis, the main mode of transport for millions of working-class South Africans, went on a strike last week after 15 minibuses were impounded last Tuesday.

The move was said to be in line with a new municipal by-law that allows the city to impound vehicles over offences such as driving without a license, not displaying registration plates or overloading.&nbsp;

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), which called for the strike action, also claimed that around 6,000 vehicles had been impounded since the beginning of the year and said they were “left with no other option” due to “the frivolous impoundment operations run by government.”&nbsp;

Over the weekend, negotiations between SANTACO and the City of Cape Town over the recent taxi impoundments failed. The strikes are expected to go on till Wednesday (August 9).&nbsp;

The strike prevented as many as 456,020 learners and 17,449 staff members from getting to school on Monday, reported Cape Times. Several health facilities reportedly remained closed due to roadblocks and violence.&nbsp;

On Monday, the British High Commission in South Africa issued a notice on Facebook on the unrest, asking travellers to delay driving “to and from the airport until the route is cleared” as “GPS services could divert you into less secure areas or into ongoing protests”.&nbsp;

Similarly, the Australian government on its website said, “Ongoing taxi strikes in the Cape Town area have the potential to turn violent, potentially impacting multiple areas, including journeys to and from the airport.”

It also advised travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa due to the high level of serious crime.”

Cape town taxi strike: At least 2 killed, 3 injured amid clashes; UK and Australia issue travel warnings

The Haryana government extended suspension of mobile internet and sms service on Saturday (August 5) to August 8, said an official order quoted by Press Trust of India.

Mobile internet and SMS services were suspended after clashes erupted in Nuh on July 31 over an attempt to stop a Vishwa Hindu Parishad procession and spread to Gurugram and other districts of the State. Six people have died in the clashes.

Meanwhile, district magistrate of Nuh has issued an order saying the curfew would be lifted for three hours on Sunday (August 6) and public movement will be allowed during these three hours.

Press Trust of India reported that the order to extend the suspension was issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home), T.V.S.N. Prasad, on Saturday evening. Earlier, the suspension of services was to extend till August 5.

"This order is extended to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order in the jurisdiction of district Nuh and shall be in force up to 08.08.2023 (23:59 hrs)," it stated.

"It has been brought to my notice by the deputy commissioners of Nuh that the law-and-order situation has been reviewed and intimated that conditions are still critical and tense in their respective districts.

"After assessment of the current prevailing law-and-order situation as well as recommendation of the deputy commissioner, Nuh, I am of this view that there is a clear potential of disruption of public utilities, damage to public assets and amenities and disturbance of public law and order in district Nuh on account of misuse of internet services by way of spread of inflammatory material and false rumours, which are being or could be transmitted/circulated to the public through social media/messaging services on mobile internet services, SMS services and other dongle services," order stated.

In a separate order, the ACS (Home) said, "This order extended to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order in the jurisdiction of district Palwal, Haryana, and shall be in force up to 07.08.2023 (1700 hrs)."

Sall has neither confirmed nor denied this.

The violence has been condemned by the United Nations, the African Union and West Africa's main regional bloc. France, the former colonial power in Africa, has urged restraint and dialogue.

Amnesty International has meanwhile called on the government to investigate Thursday's deaths and avoid using force disproportionately.

Both security troops in Imphal East and Churchandpur avoided shooting events between the two communities, when some armed individuals opened fire and fled to higher ground, according to the Army. However, there were no reports of injuries, and more efforts were underway.

There have been deadly communal confrontations in Manipur as a result of the Manipur High Court (HC) ordering the State to follow a 10-year-old recommendation to award Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the non-tribal Meitei population.

Manipur has suffered ethnic violence, with Chief Minister N Biren Singh announcing earlier this month that around 60 people had died. Houses have also been burned amid the rioting, with additional cases reported from various sections of the state.

Earlier on Friday, Chief Minister Biren Singh announced that additional security forces had been deployed in the state, with personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Manipur Police, Manipur Rifles, India Reserve Battalion (IRB), and Village Defence Force (VDF) stationed in 38 vulnerable areas.

The chief minister urged people to stay calm, stating that operations had been carried out against armed militants in numerous regions on the state's outskirts.

Efforts are being made to undertake peace discussions with all segments of society, and the government has been meeting with various peace committees constituted in response to the current situation in Manipur, he noted.

He also urged people not to engage in violent activities and not to trust or circulate false information and rumours that might cause animosity between various communities. He asked the public for&nbsp;support for the government's attempts to restore normalcy.

In light of the scenario, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit the state for three days.

Over 110 people have been arrested and one person died after clashes erupted between two groups in the Indian state of Maharashtra’s town of Akola, over the weekend, as per media reports citing officials. The violence is&nbsp;said to be triggered by a social media post on the controversial film, The Kerala Story, reported BBC, citing reports.

The authorities had also imposed a curfew and shut down internet services in the violence-hit city to get the situation under control. At least eight people, including a female constable, were injured after the clashes erupted over the weekend.&nbsp;

“Violent clash erupted between two groups over a minor dispute. Some Vehicles have been damaged by the violent mob. The situation is now under control,” Akola Superintendent of Police, Sandeep Ghuge, said on Sunday, as quoted by news agency ANI.&nbsp;

According to the police, the violence first began on Saturday when members of the community gathered outside the town’s police station to protest against a social media post in relation to The Kerala Story.&nbsp;

The post in question was reportedly a conversation between two residents the screenshot of which was shared on Instagram by one of them and “hurt the religious sentiments” of the other person. &nbsp;

“During a chat between two individuals, one person purposely tried to hurt the religious sentiments of another person after which the screenshot of those messages were shared on Instagram,” a police official told The Indian Express.&nbsp;

The members of the community then went on to file a complaint against the individual in the Ramdaspeth police station and while a case was being registered, some 1000 people marched to the house of the person who had uploaded the post, reported the local media.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on Monday, ordered the police to take strict action against the perpetrators of the riots in Akola and Shevgaon in Ahmednagar while also urging people to maintain peace and social harmony.&nbsp;

However, no further details about the post were given. The police are looking for the account holder whose Instagram handle was XYZZZZZ99988. The account, which appears to be fake, was deleted minutes after sending provocative messages, said the police.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, some parts of the city in Maharashtra remain under curfew, while internet access is completely restored, as of Tuesday. The incident has since also led to the registration of six cases at the Old City and Ramdas Peth police stations in Akola. A heavy security force is deployed in the city, including personnel of the Riot Control Police (RCP) and the State Reserve Police Force.

“Shops which were shut due to violence reopened today. Internet services are restored. However, a curfew will remain in force from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am (local time) in areas under the limits of Old City and Dabki Road police stations,” said Akola SP Sandip Ghuge.&nbsp;

When asked about the status of the investigation, he said, “Police are trying to reach to the root of the violence, including aspects like who were the instigators and their motive.” He added, “We have written to Instagram seeking details on the account holder. We have also sought help from our cyber teams and are trying to find its IP address.”

Amid a power struggle, the clashes between the military led by army general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary resulted in the killing of at least 56 civilians, while injuring 595 others. Those killed include&nbsp;three United Nations staff members belonging to the&nbsp;World Food Programme (WFP).

Later on Sunday, the UN&nbsp;food agency said it was suspending work in Sudan. Fighting is raging between&nbsp;the army and paramilitaries in the restive Darfur region.

"While we review the evolving security situation, we are forced to temporarily halt all operations in Sudan," Cindy McCain, executive director of the World Food Programme, said in a statement.&nbsp;

Sudanese Doctors' Union in a tweet said the clashes resulted in a large number of deaths and moderate and critical injuries. "The total number of civilian deaths was 56. Dozens of deaths among the military (some of them were treated in regular hospitals, and some of them are outside our scope.) The total number of injuries reached 595, including military injuries, dozens of whom were in critical condition," it said.&nbsp;

According to Reuters, which&nbsp;cited sources, two people were killed&nbsp;at the airport in Khartoum, four in the nearby city of&nbsp;Omdurman, five in El Fasher, eight in Nyala and six in El Obeid.&nbsp;

The clashes came as tensions between the military and RSF escalated in recent months, forcing a delay in the signing of deal with political parties to revive the democratic transition.

RSF claims to have seized the presidential palace and other key sites

Hours after the clashes broke out, the RSF claimed that they had taken control of the presidential palace, the residence of the army chief, Khartoum international airport, as well as airports in the northern city of Merowe and El-Obeid in the west. According to a Reuters journalist, cannons and armoured vehicles were deployed in the streets, and the sound of heavy weapons fire was heard near the headquarters of both the army and RSF.

Escalating tensions&nbsp;

This comes after days of tensions between the army and the RSF which had sparked fears of a confrontation that would undermine long-running efforts to return Sudan to civilian rule after years of power struggles and military coups.

On Thursday, the army said that some of the recent movements in Merowe by the RSF were illegal and took place without coordination.&nbsp;

However, the paramilitaries said that the actions by the leadership of the armed forces and “some officers” were an attack on its forces with the intention of creating instability. Eyewitnesses told Reuters that there has been a heavy exchange of gunfire in Merowe, on Saturday.&nbsp;

Indians in Sudan asked to ‘stay indoors’ amid clashes between paramilitary, army

Meanwhile, the officials in Tak have said local armed forces, police, and the civil administration are closely monitoring the situation and were “ready to send patrol flights if Thai airspace is violated”.

It added, “The Thai-Myanmar border command centre in Tak province is working together with relevant agencies to provide safety and give assistance in accordance to humanitarian principles to all those who fled the fighting in Myanmar.”&nbsp;

Reports suggest that the clashes between long-established ethnic rebel groups, as well as dozens of ‘People's Defence Forces’ militias who have opposed the coup, frequently clash with the military forcing civilians to flee across the nearby Thai border.

Padoh Saw Thamain Tun, a leader from the anti-junta Karen National Army (KNLA) confirmed the clashes in the area and said around “2,000 people were displaced, crossed the border, come to Thai side,” reported AFP. The ongoing fighting has raged across the country, particularly in the rural areas. Meanwhile, rights groups have accused the military of targeting civilians in air strikes and ground operations.&nbsp;

According to the local group, Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, Myanmar’s military has used lethal force against its opponents, killing some 3,212 people and jailing over 17,000. On the other hand, the military claims it is fighting “terrorists” and denies targeting civilians while blaming anti-coup fighters for the deaths of civilians.&nbsp;

Starmer declared to a loud applause, "Hinduphobia has absolutely no place in our society anywhere and we must all fight this together."&nbsp;

"I know that many people are targeted based on their religion and there's been a rise in hate crimes in recent years. I'm so tired of our divisive politics. I'm saddened by the division we have seen on the streets of Leicester and Birmingham in recent weeks; violence and hatred spread by extremists exploiting social media. We must all together stand firm against all attempts to spread hate," he said.

The two competing administrations - one located in the capital and the other authorised by a parliament in the country's east - are fighting for control over the North African country and its oil and trade resources.

Videos shared online showed dozens of cars and buildings damaged. Roads were reopened. However, after hours of raging violence, the city was back to normal.

The north African country has been in turmoil since Muammar Gaddafi was ousted and later murdered in 2011. The country is being contested by two regimes and is awaiting elections. The general election was to happen last year but got delayed due to clashes.

Armed local groups later took control of all economic resources in an effort to create chaos. However, in 2014, another parallel group was formed when the same year battle for Tripoli began and later acknowledged Khalifa Haftar as the leader. Later, in 2019, the UN-backed agreement led to an internationally recognised government but eastern forces, or Haftar’s force rejected it and attacked the capital. On the contrary, to support the Tripoli government, western groups banded together and were able to attack in 2020 with the help of Turkey, leading to ceasefires.

UN later made another peace agreement. The PM Abdulamid al-Ddeibah was assigned to oversee the elections in 2021. As there were no agreements on election rules, the process broke down.

Eastern Libya deemed Ddeibah’s administration and appointed a new head Fathi Bashagha. The former leader refused to transfer powers.

The western forces saw Bashagha as a chance of victory and united with Haftar’s eastern alliance. After being appointed, Bashagha was blocked by pro-Ddeibah while entering Tripoli. He made another attempt in May but was stopped again.

As months went by alliances and collation clashed encroaching each other’s territories. Pro-Bashagha started waging attacks when the fight broke out in an attempt to make him in charge of the capital.

Politicians have suggested making another administration. A permanent resolution to the country’s disputes appears to be distant.

A nation of nearly seven million people is still concerned that whatever the outcome of the upcoming rounds of discussions and positions will be, it would be followed by disputes.
