Despite the tense situation, reports from AFP suggested a semblance of calm along the Moei River.&nbsp;

The building has also historically been disputed between the federal government in Baghdad and authorities in the autonomous Kurdistan region of the north.&nbsp;

Recently, the central government planned to return the building to the KDP in a show of goodwill but Arab and Turkmen opponents set up a camp outside the gate last week in protest.&nbsp;

According to the police, the violence sparked when a group of Kurdish protesters approached the camp on Saturday. This was after the local media reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani had ordered the site to be handed over to the KDP.&nbsp;

Sudani has since called for a commission of inquiry into the incident. The Kirkuk police, as per Reuters said that people were injured after stones were thrown and metal bars used to attack.&nbsp;

On Sunday morning, General Jabbar Naeema al-Taee, Kirkuk’s top security official, told AFP that the building at the centre of the dispute was “under the control of the army” of Iraq and that the sit-in was over.

<h2>Death toll rises&nbsp;</h2>

At least four Kurds were killed and 15 others were injured due to the clashes, said Amer Shuani, the local police spokesman, on Sunday. Health officials said at least three out of the four victims were shot dead. Police and hospital sources had said earlier that one Kurdish protester was killed.&nbsp;

Police and security officials in the city said they are investigating the circumstances of the deaths, including who opened fire.

<h2>Curfew lifted&nbsp;</h2>

After the clashes, the Iraqi PM ordered a city-wide curfew to prevent an escalation of the violence and called on “political parties, social organizations, and community leaders to play their part in preventing strife and preserving security, stability, and order”.&nbsp;

On Sunday, General Kawa Gharib, the police chief in Kirkuk, told AFP that the curfew has since been lifted and that the “situation is now stable throughout the city.”

Five Burkinabe police officers have died in an attack in the centre-east of Burkina Faso, with at least 40 of the attackers "neutralised" when the authorities launched a counter-attack, the army said Sunday.

The attack occurred on Saturday afternoon when members of a police mobile intervention force were targeted near Diougo-Yourga, in Koulpelogo province near the Togo border, the army said.

That attack "cost the lives of five police officers. Four others were evacuated and treated for injuries", the military added in a statement.

"In response, at least forty terrorists were neutralised and equipment seized," it said.

South African city of Cape Town’s public transport system has been paralysed after a taxi strike began last week, which has since turned violent and led to the death of two people, said the police on Monday (August 7). Australia and the United Kingdom issued a travel warning about the potential danger of travelling to Cape Town.

<h2>About the recent violence</h2>

At least two people were allegedly shot dead in separate incidents during the taxi strike in Cape Town on Monday morning, said the police. The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said that the first death occurred when a driver fired shots at a person who was allegedly pelting stones at the vehicles.&nbsp;

“An individual was shot dead and three others injured after a motorist was pelted with stones on Airport Approach Road. The driver responded to the attack by firing several shots,” said Potelwa, as quoted by News24. An investigation has been launched into the incident.&nbsp;

The police on Monday also found the body of a 28-year-old man who had been shot multiple times, said the local media report. Separately, a report by AFP citing local officials said that a police officer was shot dead in a vehicle while patrolling a township 20 kilometres southeast of Cape Town, on Friday night.&nbsp;

“(The) possibility that the attack is related to the ongoing taxi strike cannot be ruled out,” said the police, adding that the officers were “performing crime prevention patrols to quell taxi related incidents”.&nbsp;

According to reports, multiple vehicles have been set on fire and several roads have been blocked due to the protests, which have since left thousands of commuters stranded.

In a statement, the local officials said that two government vehicles had been set on fire and one had been hijacked. This was in addition to four other incidents of torching and stoning of private vehicles and shootings, on Monday, in “clear attempts to target City staff and infrastructure,” the statement added.

As many as 30 people have been arrested, as per local media reports.

<h2>What is the taxi strike about?</h2>

The drivers of the minibus taxis, the main mode of transport for millions of working-class South Africans, went on a strike last week after 15 minibuses were impounded last Tuesday.

The move was said to be in line with a new municipal by-law that allows the city to impound vehicles over offences such as driving without a license, not displaying registration plates or overloading.&nbsp;

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), which called for the strike action, also claimed that around 6,000 vehicles had been impounded since the beginning of the year and said they were “left with no other option” due to “the frivolous impoundment operations run by government.”&nbsp;

Over the weekend, negotiations between SANTACO and the City of Cape Town over the recent taxi impoundments failed. The strikes are expected to go on till Wednesday (August 9).&nbsp;

The strike prevented as many as 456,020 learners and 17,449 staff members from getting to school on Monday, reported Cape Times. Several health facilities reportedly remained closed due to roadblocks and violence.&nbsp;

<h2>Australia and UK issue travel advisories</h2>

On Monday, the British High Commission in South Africa issued a notice on Facebook on the unrest, asking travellers to delay driving “to and from the airport until the route is cleared” as “GPS services could divert you into less secure areas or into ongoing protests”.&nbsp;

Similarly, the Australian government on its website said, “Ongoing taxi strikes in the Cape Town area have the potential to turn violent, potentially impacting multiple areas, including journeys to and from the airport.”

It also advised travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa due to the high level of serious crime.”

The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said that the first death occurred when a driver fired shots at a person who was allegedly pelting stones at the vehicles. “An individual was shot dead and three others injured after a motorist was pelted with stones on Airport Approach Road. The driver responded to the attack by firing several shots,” said Potelwa, as quoted by News24. An investigation has been launched into the incident. The police on Monday also found the body of a 28-year-old man who had been shot multiple times, said the local media report. Separately, a report by AFP citing local officials said that a police officer was shot dead in a vehicle while patrolling a township 20 kilometres southeast of Cape Town, on Friday night. “(The) possibility that the attack is related to the ongoing taxi strike cannot be ruled out,” said the police, adding that the officers were “performing crime prevention patrols to quell taxi related incidents”. According to reports, multiple vehicles have been set on fire and several roads have been blocked due to the protests, which have since left thousands of commuters stranded. In a statement, the local officials said that two government vehicles had been set on fire and one had been hijacked. This was in addition to four other incidents of torching and stoning of private vehicles and shootings, on Monday, in “clear attempts to target City staff and infrastructure,” the statement added. As many as 30 people have been arrested, as per local media reports. What is the taxi strike about? The drivers of the minibus taxis, the main mode of transport for millions of working-class South Africans, went on a strike last week after 15 minibuses were impounded last Tuesday. The move was said to be in line with a new municipal by-law that allows the city to impound vehicles over offences such as driving without a license, not displaying registration plates or overloading. The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), which called for the strike action, also claimed that around 6,000 vehicles had been impounded since the beginning of the year and said they were “left with no other option” due to “the frivolous impoundment operations run by government.” Over the weekend, negotiations between SANTACO and the City of Cape Town over the recent taxi impoundments failed. The strikes are expected to go on till Wednesday (August 9). The strike prevented as many as 456,020 learners and 17,449 staff members from getting to school on Monday, reported Cape Times. Several health facilities reportedly remained closed due to roadblocks and violence. Australia and UK issue travel advisories On Monday, the British High Commission in South Africa issued a notice on Facebook on the unrest, asking travellers to delay driving “to and from the airport until the route is cleared” as “GPS services could divert you into less secure areas or into ongoing protests”. Cape town taxi strike: At least 2 killed, 3 injured amid clashes; UK and Australia issue travel warnings

The Haryana government extended suspension of mobile internet and sms service on Saturday (August 5) to August 8, said an official order quoted by Press Trust of India.

In Palwal district, these two services will now be suspended till 5 pm on August 7.

Mobile internet and SMS services were suspended after clashes erupted in Nuh on July 31 over an attempt to stop a Vishwa Hindu Parishad procession and spread to Gurugram and other districts of the State. Six people have died in the clashes.

Meanwhile, district magistrate of Nuh has issued an order saying the curfew would be lifted for three hours on Sunday (August 6) and public movement will be allowed during these three hours.

Press Trust of India reported that the order to extend the suspension was issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home), T.V.S.N. Prasad, on Saturday evening. Earlier, the suspension of services was to extend till August 5.

"This order is extended to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order in the jurisdiction of district Nuh and shall be in force up to 08.08.2023 (23:59 hrs)," it stated.

"It has been brought to my notice by the deputy commissioners of Nuh that the law-and-order situation has been reviewed and intimated that conditions are still critical and tense in their respective districts.

"After assessment of the current prevailing law-and-order situation as well as recommendation of the deputy commissioner, Nuh, I am of this view that there is a clear potential of disruption of public utilities, damage to public assets and amenities and disturbance of public law and order in district Nuh on account of misuse of internet services by way of spread of inflammatory material and false rumours, which are being or could be transmitted/circulated to the public through social media/messaging services on mobile internet services, SMS services and other dongle services," order stated.

In a separate order, the ACS (Home) said, "This order extended to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order in the jurisdiction of district Palwal, Haryana, and shall be in force up to 07.08.2023 (1700 hrs)."

Thursday and Friday's riots were the latest bout in months of violence in Senegal, long considered one of West Africa's strongest democracies, sparked by Sonko's court case as well as concerns that President Macky Sall will try to bypass a two-term limit and run again in February elections.

Sall has neither confirmed nor denied this.

The violence has been condemned by the United Nations, the African Union and West Africa's main regional bloc. France, the former colonial power in Africa, has urged restraint and dialogue.

Amnesty International has meanwhile called on the government to investigate Thursday's deaths and avoid using force disproportionately.

Army Chief General Manoj Pande will visit Manipur today to assess the security situation in the aftermath of recent unrest there, according to Indian Army authorities. They stated that the Army Chief will be updated by Eastern Command authorities on the efforts taken to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles have increased security across Manipur in response to reports of new unrest in the state, as per ANI reports.

Both security troops in Imphal East and Churchandpur avoided shooting events between the two communities, when some armed individuals opened fire and fled to higher ground, according to the Army. However, there were no reports of injuries, and more efforts were underway.

There have been deadly communal confrontations in Manipur as a result of the Manipur High Court (HC) ordering the State to follow a 10-year-old recommendation to award Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the non-tribal Meitei population.

Manipur has suffered ethnic violence, with Chief Minister N Biren Singh announcing earlier this month that around 60 people had died. Houses have also been burned amid the rioting, with additional cases reported from various sections of the state.

Earlier on Friday, Chief Minister Biren Singh announced that additional security forces had been deployed in the state, with personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Manipur Police, Manipur Rifles, India Reserve Battalion (IRB), and Village Defence Force (VDF) stationed in 38 vulnerable areas.

The chief minister urged people to stay calm, stating that operations had been carried out against armed militants in numerous regions on the state's outskirts.

Efforts are being made to undertake peace discussions with all segments of society, and the government has been meeting with various peace committees constituted in response to the current situation in Manipur, he noted.

He also urged people not to engage in violent activities and not to trust or circulate false information and rumours that might cause animosity between various communities. He asked the public for&nbsp;support for the government's attempts to restore normalcy.

In light of the scenario, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit the state for three days.
