The wedding&nbsp;comes nearly a year after (January 19), when Ardern resigned as prime minister. During her final speech in parliament, Ardern told Gayford, a New Zealand television presenter, “Let’s finally get married.”&nbsp;

Incumbent Prime Minister and Labour leader Chris Hipkins conceded his defeat and said that his party's six years in power were over.

Hipkins, who replaced two-term leader Jacinda Ardern in January 2023, released a statement saying that he was "not in a position to form a government".

"The result tonight is not one that any of us wanted, but I want you to be proud of what we achieved over the last six years," Hipkins told Labour supporters in Wellington.

The National Party and its coalition partner ACT were projected to win 62 seats with 85 per cent of the vote tallied, which was sufficient to secure a majority in New Zealand's 120-seat parliament.

Luxon, a former airline executive, said New Zealanders had "reached for hope and voted for change".

Luxon and Hipkins, during their election campaign, tried to woo voters by promising to reduce rising petrol prices, improve the issue of housing shortage and limit the growing prices of staple foods.

The Labour Party, which won under Ardern in 2020, was on its way to suffering one of its gravest election defeats with forecasts pointing to 34 seats.

"Following on from my good friend Jacinda, it was not going to be an easy task," Hipkins admitted.

"I did know when I took on this job that it was going to be an uphill battle."

The positive test will temporarily sideline Hipkins in the campaign for the 14th of October election. Hipkins said on his official social media feed that he started to experience cold symptoms on Saturday and had cancelled most of his weekend engagements.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said Allan was involved in the crash soon after 9 pm Sunday in Wellington. Allan was also detained at the central police station for about four hours, Associated Press reported.

Prime Minister Hipkins added that Allan’s breath test showed she was over the legal alcohol limit.

Allen, however, was not charged with drunk driving. Police said they issued Allan an infringement notice in relation to the breath test.

If found guilty, Allan could face a fine and a suspension of her driver’s license.

<h2>Kiri Allan had taken time off over mental health concerns</h2>

Once considered a rising politician of the Labour Party, Allan had recently taken time off for her mental health after a publicised split with her partner.

Hipkins said he spoke with Allan on Monday morning and told her he thought she was not in a fit state to remain a minister.

She agreed and resigned from her ministerial roles, Hipkins said.&nbsp;

Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said on Wednesday (June 7) that the country is finalising a defence agreement with New Zealand which will see the two nations increase military engagement. New Zealand will help build capacity and skills in Fiji Defence Force. PM Rabuka told media in Wellington that the agreement would be finalised next week. In Wellington, he is meeting senior New Zealand government officials including Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and opposition leader.

“The agreement will allow defence officials to undertake engagement in different areas including capacity building and upskilling and exposure to new technologies interoperability and technical support among other,” he said.

China is making bold forays and engaging with Pacific island nations previously considered to be in the influence zone of Australia and New Zealand. This has shaken these countries and the US and they have started their own engagement process. This engagement is also aimed to deter Pacific Island nations from forming security pacts with China.

<h2>USA moves to counter China</h2>

In the month of May this year, the US and Papua New Guinea signed a defence cooperation pact as well as a maritime surveillance deal. Australia too, is signing a security treaty with Papua New Guinea and has signed another such deal with Vanuatu.

New Zealand last year signed a partnership statement with Fiji where they agreed to work more closely together in areas such as security, protecting shared interests and economic resilience.

In Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, concerns about becoming embroiled in competition between US and China has become a domestic political issue. Regional leaders have raised concerns about the Pacific getting militarised.

Rabuka met New Zealand PM Chris Hipkins earlier on Wednesday in private and discussed a number of matters. The two leaders said that the talks included economic ties climate change and Fiji’s recovery from climate change.

Hipkins at the joint press conference reiterated the need for region to work together.

“We know we are stronger when we combine our collective efforts and focus on pacific regionalism and the priorities of the blue pacific continent,” Hipkins said.

Fiji to sign defence agreement with New Zealand, says PM

A hostel fire, that claimed the lives of at least six people in New Zealand's capital city Wellington, is being treated as an act of arson, said the police on Wednesday as they opened a homicide probe into the incident.

In the early hours of Tuesday, a major blaze broke out on the top floor of the Loafers Lodge in the suburb of Newtown. Soon after, the flames and smoke engulfed the entire building forcing the residents to flee.&nbsp;

Due to major structural damage caused by the fire, the recovery efforts have been extensively hampered.

According to the police, the investigators hoped to enter the building,&nbsp;after a health and safety inspection, in the afternoon to start with their probe and identify the ones killed in the incident.

"This scene examination will be an extensive and methodical process, and we expect it to take some time, likely several days," Acting Wellington District Commander Dion Bennett said.

"I can confirm that we are treating the fire as arson," he added.

"It is being treated as a homicide investigation," Bennett said, adding that police had a list of people they wanted to speak to.

The hostel, where the fire broke out, provided accommodation for hospital staff, construction workers and the people serving sentences in the community for minor crimes, among others.

The police on Wednesday said that some people were still missing, putting the number at less than 20 further adding that some of the missing residents of the hostel might just be unaccounted for.

The investigators are yet to learn about the exact cause of the incident but as per the police, there was a couch fire late on Monday, that took place two hours before the virulent blaze, which was not reported to the emergency services.

"We will be seeking to confirm any link between that couch fire and the subsequent fatal fire," Bennett said.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand called it safe for police to enter the building earlier on Wednesday.

"The next step for us is going through and ensuring that there isn't anybody else in there and obviously working with police to investigate and support them in the removal of the six people," FENZ region manager Bruce Stubbs told Radio New Zealand.

He described the fire as "an absolute tragedy".

Hipkins appreciated the "incredible effort" of firefighters to extinguish the blaze and evacuate people.

"I acknowledge the victims and their families -- an absolutely tragic set of circumstances," he said, vowing a "thorough review" of the disaster.

"There will be an opportunity to test whether this building was fully compliant with all of the rules that it needed to be compliant with but obviously the focus at the moment is supporting our firefighters," Hipkins said.

New Zealand Police found the bodies of two men&nbsp;in flood waters in separate incidents in a northern suburb, while search is underway for another man who they believe has been swept away in the southern part of the city. A third death related to the flooding was confirmed&nbsp;by the police, on Saturday afternoon (local time)&nbsp;who said that&nbsp;Fire and Emergency workers found the&nbsp;person who was previously&nbsp;unaccounted for&nbsp;after a landslide hit a house in an inner suburb of Auckland, as per local media reports.&nbsp;

In a statement, AEM’s Clark urged caution for the city’s residents returning home to check the damage caused. He added, “We won't start to get a good idea of numbers affected until later today and, even then, this will take time, with information still coming in and many assessments to complete.”&nbsp;

According to media reports, the flash flood turned many of Auckland’s roads into rivers on Friday (January 27) with ankle-length water on several terminals of the Auckland Airport. The authorities have also said they expect operations to resume by midday on Saturday but before that, there will be no flights in or out of the airport, reported AFP.&nbsp;

In a statement, Air New Zealand said that the airport was scheduled to resume operations from its international terminal from 5:00 pm (local time) and at least 12 of the airlines’ international flights over Auckland were diverted overnight.&nbsp;

Furthermore, Emergency Management Minister Kieran McAnulty took to Twitter and said New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins would visit Auckland on Saturday to “assess the damage”. Subsequently, Hipkins also took to the social media platform and said, “My travel to Auckland this morning has been delayed due to weather conditions. I’m continuing to monitor the situation from Wellington. Govt will provide as much help and support as we can.”&nbsp;

At least eight threats against her had entered the legal system. Handwritten fliers vowing to "eradicate" Ardern were sent to several homes in January 2022 and the matter is under investigation.
