Sancho, on loan from Manchester United, threaded his shot through the legs of an Eindhoven player and in off the post in the third minute, while Reus wrapped up the win with a calm finish in second-half stoppage time.

Sancho's goal was his second in two matches after returning to Dortmund in January on loan from United after falling out of favour with coach Erik ten Hag.

He had joined United from Dortmund for 85 million euros ($93 million) in 2021 on a five-year deal, but failed to hold down a regular spot and had made just three appearances this season before returning to the Ruhr valley in January.

Sancho was also on target in Saturday's 2-1 league win over Werder Bremen.

Donyell Malen almost scored another for the hosts a little later but his low shot sailed just wide of the far post.

"I think we really earned our quarter-final spot today with hard work," said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. "We played perhaps the best 30 minutes of the season at the beginning."

"We should have scored more goals during that pressing phase. Unfortunately, in the second half, we stopped playing like that but defended with passion."

Eindhoven, who last reached the quarter-finals in 2007, improved after the break and substitute Hirving Lozano rattled the post with a missile from 25 metres.

Johan Bakayoko then dribbled past defender Mats Hummels, forcing a good save from Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel in the 70th as Eindhoven kept pushing for an equaliser.

Niclas Fuellkrug thought he had settled the hosts' nerves and put the game to bed when he volleyed in a Reus free kick in the 77th but his effort was ruled offside and the Germans had to endure even more Dutch pressure.

Luuk de Jong could have sent the game into extra time when he was left free in front of goal but instead of tapping in, he sent the ball wildly over the bar in stoppage time.

"I got the ball and did a one-two with (Jordan) Teze," De Jong said. "But I was leaning back when I shot and it all happened so quickly. Of course, I feel that I shouldn’t have missed."

Dortmund then struck with the very next move as Reus completed a quick break to seal the win.

Champions League: Atletico Madrid wins on penalty against Inter Milan to reach last eight

Real Madrid withstood an onslaught from RB Leipzig to secure a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie that sent them through to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 aggregate victory on Wednesday.

RB Leipzig were arguably the better side and missed several gilt-edged chances. But Real Madrid increased the tempo in the second half and ultimately did enough to seal their place in the last eight.

Bidding for a record-extending 15th Champions League title, Real took the lead thanks to a Vinicius Jr strike from a counter attack in the 65th minute.

But Leipzig's Willi Orban levelled the score three minutes later with a header to set up a tense final few minutes that included a strike that hit the crossbar by Dani Olmo.

Even though Real have a formidable record in Europe, having been knocked out in the round of 16 only twice in the past 14 years while winning the title five times during that period, Carlo Ancelotti's team began rather cagily.

Leipzig kept threatening to score, with Orban missing twice in the second half after shooting wide.

In the second half, Rodrygo replaced Eduardo Camavinga and suddenly Real were playing with more purpose.

Real appeared to have put the tie to bed when Toni Kroos stole the ball and fed Jude Bellingham at the halfway line, who took the ball up the Leipzig box.

He slipped a pass to Vinicius, who had cut in from the left into the centre circle before rifling a shot into the left-hand corner.

That goal only seemed to fire up Leipzig, who equalised within three minutes when Orban got in front of Nacho to score with a stooping header from a cross by David Raum.

In a final 20 minutes in which several yellow cards were handed out, Real were playing with fire and were under repeated pressure in their own box with goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who had already saved Real in the first leg, forced to make several crucial saves.

Leipzig almost took the game to extra time when Dani Olmo saw his shot ricochet off the bar in added time.

Ultimately, Real did just enough to qualify for yet another quarter-final.

“Obviously we know it wasn´t the best game of the season," said Real’s captain Nacho.

"Sometimes you just have bad games and tonight was the case. It looks like a drama because of how we played but what really matters is we qualified for the quarters. Let that be a lesson for what´s to come.”

The win provides instant relief for coach Thomas Tuchel and his team that had won just one of their last five matches in all competitions prior to Tuesday and are currently 10 points off the top in the Bundesliga.

Lazio, bidding for their first quarter-final spot in 24 years, merely managed to keep up for half an hour, finding no way back into the game once Bayern had gone in front.

Champions League: Harry Kane shines in Bayern Munich win; Kylian Mbappe scores brace for PSG to book QF berth

Porto snatched a shock last-gasp 1-0 victory over Arsenal as Galeno netted a sublime effort deep in stoppage time in their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday. A drab clash was deadlocked until the fifth minute of added time when the Brazilian winger curled an unstoppable effort past David Raya to send the Estadio Do Dragao crowd wild.

Arsenal, who had scored 21 goals in their last five Premier League games, were strangely subdued in attack and failed to register an effort on target throughout a cagey contest. They defended solidly enough but may live to regret their lack of urgency as Galeno gave Porto the edge ahead of the second leg in London on March 12.

Arsenal are seeking to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010 with their last seven Champions League campaigns all ending in the last 16. "We had to manage the game better when you can't win," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. "We lacked threat and aggression in the final third and we need to tweak a few things. We can do better. "If you want to be in the quarter-finals you have to beat your opponent and this is what we will have to do at the Emirates now."

Reassuringly for Arsenal, Porto have a terrible record away against English clubs and have never scored at Arsenal, conceding 11 in three visits. But the 30-time Portuguese champions will travel with hope. Arteta's side controlled possession throughout the game but apart from a couple of headers from William Saliba and Kai Havertz, both from corners, they never really looked like scoring.

Porto grew in confidence and somehow failed to go ahead in the 21st minute after a slick counter-attack. Galeno thumped a powerful shot against the far post and when the ball came back to him at pace in a flash he placed the rebound agonisingly wide of the other post.

With the 40-year-old Pepe, the oldest player to appear in a Champions League knockout round game, showing his vast experience at the back, Porto comfortably dealt with Arsenal's attack and kept England forward Bukayo Saka quiet.

Porto occasionally threatened and had another chance shortly before the break when Evanilson drove a shot at Raya. The second half was even less exciting than the first with Arsenal struggling to gain any rhythm against their wily hosts.

But the best was saved to last as Galeno seized on a loose ball and advanced to the edge of the penalty area before looking up and bending a shot past Raya. "It was a kick in the teeth," Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice said. "We have to change our approach in the home leg and give it absolutely everything."

"If you want to be in the quarter-finals you have to beat your opponent and this is what we will have to do at the Emirates now." Reassuringly for Arsenal, Porto have a terrible record away against English clubs and have never scored at Arsenal, conceding 11 in three visits. But the 30-time Portuguese champions will travel with hope. Arteta's side controlled possession throughout the game but apart from a couple of headers from William Saliba and Kai Havertz, both from corners, they never really looked like scoring. Ciro Immobile scored a 69th-minute penalty to earn hosts Lazio a 1-0 victory over 10-man Bayern Munich on Wednesday in their Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash.

Immobile converted his spot-kick after Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano's clumsy challenge on Gustav Isaksen for which the France international was sent off with a straight red card.

Disciplined Lazio stifled the German side's attacks and Bayern were toothless throughout, failing to get a single effort on target in the match.

The Bavarians, favourites going into the game, were desperate to bounce back from Saturday's 3-0 Bundesliga loss to leaders Bayer Leverkusen which left them five points off the top.

They will return to Munich with more pressure piling on coach Thomas Tuchel and his team after their second straight defeat. They have failed to score in their last two games.

"We started well had a chance in the first minute and then with Harry Kane and then with Jamal Musiala. We had the game under control in the first half," Tuchel said.

"But in the second our performance dropped inexplicably. We made too many individual errors and made our opponents stronger and we lost concentration. We lost our rhythm.

"It was completely our responsibility. We lost a game today that in the first half looked like we could not lose it."

Tuchel played down concerns about his situation.

"Worried about my future? No, I am not," he said.

Bayern created early chances for Joshua Kimmich and Harry Kane, who both narrowly missed the target.

The Italians, who lost 6-2 on aggregate to Bayern at this stage of the competition three years ago, responded with a fierce Luis Alberto strike that flew wide of Manuel Neuer's goal.

The tempo gradually dropped, Bayern struggled with the disciplined Italian back line and had to wait until the 40th minute to threaten again when Musiala fired over the bar from close range.

Lazio should have taken the lead two minutes after the restart when Isaksen only had Neuer to beat but the keeper stood his ground to block his shot.

The Dane won a penalty when Immobile passed to Isaksen in the box and Upamecano arrived late and stepped on his ankle.

Immobile kept his cool and sent Neuer the wrong way to give Maurizio Sarri's team the advantage going into the return leg in Munich on March 5.

"We worked and prepared for this match to have a say in it," said Immobile. "I was convinced that the team would put everything out there.

"We had some opportunities and we had to be good at exploiting them ahead of the return match and we did just that."

An incredible solo goal from Brahim Diaz secured Real Madrid a 1-0 win away at RB Leipzig in Tuesday's Champions League last 16 first leg.

The German club were made to pay early in the second half when Diaz opened the scoring.&nbsp;

Drafted into the side in place of the injured Jude Bellingham, Diaz danced past three Leipzig defenders before curling an inch-perfect shot inside the far post.&nbsp;

"I'm intuitive," said Diaz of the goal. "I saw Vini (Vinicius Junior) and wanted to give it to him, but in the end I took the shot.

"It was a nice goal."

Real midfielder Toni Kroos praised his teammate, telling Amazon Prime "a piece of individual skill decided the game.&nbsp;

"If we're honest, it could have gone in either direction."

The win was Real Madrid's seventh in seven games this Champions League campaign and puts them in prime position to make it past the last 16 for the fourth straight season.

"It was an open match," said Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, contending that "a lucky punch decided the game".

Madrid travelled to Saxony without England midfielder Bellingham, who injured his ankle in Saturday's 4-0 win over Girona.

With first-choice centre-backs Antonio Ruediger, David Alaba and Eder Militao ruled out, coach Carlo Ancelotti opted to continue midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni's stint in central defence.

Despite their injury woes, Real sit five clear in the league and have only lost twice this season in all competitions, both times to derby rivals Atletico Madrid.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose said Tuesday his side were "not afraid" of Real Madrid, having beaten the 14-time European champions 3-2 at the same venue in October 2022.&nbsp;

"The goalkeeper would not have got to the ball, so it was a goal."&nbsp;

Gulacsi told reporters he was "frustrated" by the decision, explaining "1-0 after a couple of minutes could have changed the whole game."

Leipzig carved out a handful of half-chances but poor control in crucial moments, particularly from striker Benjamin Sesko, let the visitors off the hook.&nbsp;

Other than a trademark long-range effort from Toni Kroos which was gobbled up by Gulacsi, Real created little early.&nbsp;

Their best chance came late in the first half when Vinicius' looping cross drifted just above the head of an advancing Rodrygo.&nbsp;

Collecting the ball near the sideline just three minutes into the second half, Diaz was fouled but refused to go to ground, dribbling through the Leipzig defence before unleashing a curling shot past Gulacsi to score.

"We weren't able to dominate, but we played a good game," Diaz said.&nbsp;

"I'm happy to be able to help the side -- we continue to show we're a great team."

The goal cranked the home side into gear, with Barcelona youth product Dani Olmo going close to equalising, twice stinging the palms of Lunin.&nbsp;

Madrid should have had another with 20 minutes remaining after going on the counter, but Vinicius hit the post.

Champions League: Dazzling Brahim Diaz sends Real Madrid to victory in Leipzig

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has insisted that the European governing body was "right" to kick Manchester City out of the Champions League for breaching financial regulations. City were suspended by UEFA in February 2020 when the club violated Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and were likely to face a two-year suspension. However, a successful appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in July of that year saw the ban being lifted.

"And, sometimes, you lose a case when you're sure... You have to respect the decision of the court. I don't want to speak about the case in England. But I trust that the decision of our independent body was correct."

Paris Saint-Germain and Porto qualified for the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday as Newcastle bowed out of Europe after losing 2-1 at home to AC Milan. PSG drew 1-1 away to Group F winners Borussia Dortmund to go through as runners-up after Milan came from behind to beat Newcastle at St James' Park and eliminate Eddie Howe's side.

Newcastle, who needed to win and for PSG to drop points to keep their first Champions League campaign in 20 years alive, took the lead through a brilliant Joelinton strike in the first half. But Christian Pulisic equalised on the hour and substitute Samuel Chukwueze broke Newcastle hearts with an 84th-minute winner, although it wasn't enough for Milan to overhaul PSG.

"We gave everything to the match. I can't ask for anything more (in terms of) commitment, effort, physical exertion. Unfortunately for us it wasn't to be," said Howe. The French champions, in danger of a first group stage exit since the Qatari takeover in 2011, fell behind when Karim Adeyemi scored early in the second half in Germany.

Warren Zaire-Emery came to the rescue for PSG five minutes later after Kylian Mbappe weaved into the box, his pass deflected out to the teenager who advanced towards goal before slamming home a powerful shot.

Mbappe, whose PSG future will again come into sharp focus in January, had an effort ruled out for offside but the point was enough in the end for the visitors, who finished level on points with Milan but progressed thanks to a better head-to-head goal difference.

PSG, Porto storm into UEFA Champions League last 16 as Newcastle United bow out

Newcastle United will need a helping hand on the Champions League matchday 6 as they take on seven-time champions AC Milan at St James’ Park on Wednesday (Dec 13) evening. With a three-way battle for the last-second spot in the group Paris Saint-Germain are also in the race and sit in the pole position after their controversial draw on matchday 5 against the Magpies. The night will also see Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk in action as they battle for another second spot in Group H.&nbsp;

<h2>Newcastle United seek helping hand</h2>

Newcastle United would have needed a win on the final day against AC Milan to reach the Champions League R16, only for their fate to be hanging in balance after a controversial draw against Paris Saint-Germain. The 1-1 draw for Newcastle means they are third in the Group F standings with five points. Borussia Dortmund have already qualified for the knockouts, meaning three teams will scramble for a place in the R16.

Dortmund with 10 points in five matches are at top of the charts while PSG are second with seven points. Both Newcastle and AC Milan are separated by goal difference and have five points each.

Newcastle’s encounter against AC Milan at St. James’ Park is a must-win and a failure will see them wave goodbye to the competition. Even a draw will see elimination for Newcastle along with AC Milan as they will both fail to leapfrog PSG on seven points. A win for Newcastle and a draw or a defeat for PSG will be the only equation that could see the Magpies reach the knockouts.

Tied on nine points each Porto will advance to the R16 with a draw as they will attain a better head-to-head record with Shakhtar. However, any team emerging winner will advance to the next stage of the competition. Interestingly, if Barcelona lose by one-goal margin and Shakhtar win by six-goal margin they could win the group and condemn the five-time champions to second place. Atletico Madrid and Lazio will also go head-to-head with the winner of the contest winning the group.

Borussia Dortmund have already qualified for the knockouts, meaning three teams will scramble for a place in the R16. Dortmund with 10 points in five matches are at top of the charts while PSG are second with seven points. Both Newcastle and AC Milan are separated by goal difference and have five points each. Champions League: Newcastle United seek helping hand against Milan for R16 berth as PSG sit in pole position

Manchester United crashed out of Europe as a 1-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday rounded off a miserable Champions League campaign for the Red Devils.

Kingsley Coman scored the only goal for the Bundesliga champions, who had long since secured their place in the last 16, to leave United without even the consolation of dropping into the Europa League.

An embarrassing early exit from Europe's elite competition increases the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag with United also languishing in sixth in the Premier League.

The damage to United's Champions League hopes was done long before the arrival of Bayern when they failed to win three of their four games against Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

Copenhagen beat Galatasaray 1-0 on Tuesday to join Bayern in the last 16, with the Turkish giants finishing third.

It is just the fourth time than an English side has finished bottom of their Champions League group.

A troubled season for Ten Hag reached a new low on Saturday when Bournemouth won for the first time at Old Trafford and with ease in a 3-0 victory.

The former Ajax boss responded by recalling Raphael Varane to the starting line-up for the first time in nearly two months.

The Frenchman has been surprisingly frozen out by Ten Hag, but is likely to have a big part to play in the coming weeks as Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw had to be replaced during Tuesday's action, adding to an already lengthy injury list.

Bayern were already assured of progressing as Group A winners but Thomas Tuchel's men had a point to prove themselves after suffering a 5-1 hammering at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Harry Kane started on his return to England and played a decisive role in the winning goal as he teed up Coman to blast past Andre Onana.

<h2>Lack of urgency&nbsp;</h2>

Bayern remain unbeaten in the Champions League group stages since 2017, and extended a competition record of nine consecutive away wins at this stage of the competition.

Yet the German giants rarely had to get out of second gear as they look forward to the knockout stages in 2024.

There was no such excuse for United's lack of urgency as they bowed out with a whimper.

The decision to pursue the potential of Rasmus Hojlund instead of launching a bid for Kane in the summer transfer window looks ever more questionable.

Hojlund is yet to score in the Premier League and has only netted in one of his last 13 United appearances.

Injuries to Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial meant the young Dane was Ten Hag's only available striker.

Shaw's long-range effort that Manuel Neuer comfortably batted behind was United's only shot on target.

But the loss of Shaw at half-time and Maguire during the first half, to an apparent groin injury, only added to Ten Hag's woes ahead of a daunting trip to Liverpool on Sunday.

United did have one big chance to go in front early in the second half, but Bruno Fernandes' wild effort that flew well over the bar summed up his side's lack of quality and composure in the final third.

Bayern were also far from their free-flowing best.

However, they needed just one slick move to win the game as Kane flicked Thomas Mueller's pass into the path of Coman to fire home his fifth goal of the season 19 minutes from time.

Champions League: Manchester United crash out of Europe after 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich

Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskheli helped an "ice-cold" Napoli secure a narrow Champions League victory at Union Berlin on Tuesday, laying on the game's only goal for Giacomo Raspadori in a 1-0 away victory. The Georgian stepped up in the absence of star striker Victor Osimhen and was dangerous throughout, slicing through the Union defence to set up Raspadori midway through the second half.&nbsp;

The victory -- Napoli's second in three group stage matches -- boosts the Italian side's chances of reaching the knockouts, while Union are stranded in last place with no points after three losses.&nbsp;Visiting manager Rudi Garcia said, "We had to be patient and in the second half we did better -- and scored a great goal."

"We've won twice away from home (but) there's still a long way for us to go to qualify." Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo told Sky Sports: "We wanted this win -- we showed how strong of a side we are."

Goalscorer Raspadori said although his team "could have done better" against Union "an away win like this in the Champions League is always good." "We knew it would be difficult."

Union left centre-back Leonardo Bonucci, who signed on a free from Juventus in the summer, on the bench despite the Italian captain having played 29 matches against Napoli in a storied career.&nbsp; Another summer arrival from the Italian league, Germany defender Robin Gosens, who arrived from Inter Milan, recovered in time to make the starting XI.

Spurred on by a fiery home crowd of 70,000 in Berlin's sold out Olympic Stadium, Union started brighter, forcing the Italian champions to concede some early corners as the home side pushed high and had Napoli on the back foot.&nbsp; Union had the ball in the net after 24 minutes when Chelsea loanee David Fofana, carving down the right flank, found Gosens, who tapped in, but the Ivorian had been offside in the build up.&nbsp;

Napoli had few attacking opportunities in the opening half, seemingly missing Osimhen's penetration up front and manager Rudi Garcia reacted at halftime, switching out Jens Cajuste for Eljif Elmas in midfield to give his side some attacking spark. Quiet in the first, Kvaratskhelia danced his way into the penalty box early in the second, but failed to find a teammate in a penalty area crowded by red Union shirts.&nbsp;

Kvaratskhelia continued to trouble Union down the left and created the opener out of nothing, shedding Trimmel and cutting back to Raspadori, who snuck a looping strike in at the near post.&nbsp; Fischer made all five changes as the clock wound down but Napoli held firm for a hard-fought away victory.&nbsp;

Union, who surprisingly qualified for the Champions League after just their fourth season in the top division,&nbsp;have now lost ten matches in a row in all competitions.

Trimmel observed: "It was a good step for us in the right direction. We were brave." "It's a bitter feeling because we weren't missing much."

The Champions League group stage has reached the business end as teams are scrambling for a spot in the knockout stage. Tuesday and Wednesday proved to be crucial for teams across Europe as giants like Manchester City and Real Madrid punched their tickets to the knockout stage. However, teams like Manchester United and Newcastle United are struggling to reach the knockouts with just one match to go in the Champions League Round of 16.

<h2>How can Manchester United reach R16?</h2>

Currently bottom of the four-team group standings, United need a miracle of sorts to reach the R16 with them on four points from five matches. Bayern Munich are top of the table with 13 points in five matches and have already won Group A. Copenhagen and Galatasaray are second and third respectively with five points each. Interestingly, both Copenhagen and Galatasaray meet on the final Matchday while United host Harry Kane-inspired Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in two weeks.

United’s only equation of reaching the R16 is simple, they must beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday (Dec 12). However, they will need a helping hand from both Copenhagen and Galatasaray with their head-to-head clash should result in a draw. However, any other set of results in the two matches will see United get eliminated. If both the matches end in a draw and United fail to win on final matchday it will be curtains in Europe altogether for Erik ten Hag’s side.

<h2>What Newcastle need to do to reach R16?</h2>

Newcastle United would have needed a win on the final day against AC Milan to reach the Champions League R16, only for their fate to be hanged in balance after a controversial draw against Paris Saint-Germain. The 1-1 draw for Newcastle means they are third in the Group F standings with five points. Explained: How Manchester United, Newcastle could qualify for Champions League R16

Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas both scored twice as Barcelona began their defence of the Women's Champions League title on Tuesday with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Benfica, while a ruthless Lyon hit nine against Slavia Prague. Barcelona are aiming to win the Champions League for the third time in four seasons and their strength in depth was summed up by the presence of six players in their starting line-up who played in August's World Cup final in Sydney, when Spain beat England 1-0.

A crowd of fewer than 5,000 watched Putellas, who was a substitute in the World Cup final after missing almost all of last season due to a serious knee injury, head in the opener with quarter of an hour played. Putellas then followed up to make it 2-0 on the line when a header by Esmee Brugts beat the Portuguese side's goalkeeper, and Bonmati got the third with a composed finish just before the interval.

Putellas was replaced at the break and Bonmati then netted again seven minutes after the restart having been set up by Caroline Graham Hansen. Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala wrapped up a convincing victory by scoring with an overhead kick just seconds after coming on as a substitute.

"The motivation for this club is to arrive in the Champions League final every year," Barcelona's England midfielder Keira Walsh told DAZN. "If you look at the mentality of these girls, that's what I saw when I came in here. "It was always, constantly being at the top in training every single day. It's so competitive and that speaks for itself."

Also in Group A, Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-1 away to Rosengard of Sweden, with captain Tanja Pawollek opening the scoring before Barbara Dunst netted the second for the Germans, who have won the competition four times. Captain Olivia Schough pulled a goal back for Rosengard, the Swedish champions.

<h2>Hegerberg's 60th goal</h2>

Lyon, the record eight-time Champions League winners, are expected to make short work of Group B and they showed no mercy to their hosts in the Czech Republic. France star Kadidiatou Diani, a close-season signing from Paris Saint-Germain, netted twice for Lyon while 2018 Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg scored a penalty in the second half.

The Norwegian is the Champions League's all-time top scorer and that was her 60th goal in the competition. There was also a brace for Canadian defender Vanessa Gilles, with Sara Daebritz, Danielle van de Donk, Eugenie Le Sommer and substitute Amel Majri getting their other goals.

Seen as one of the main threats to Barcelona's hopes of retaining the trophy, Lyon's next game will be at home to the Austrian side St Poelten. "If everything goes the way we want it to go, we can go far in every competition," said the Lyon coach, Sonia Bompastor.

St Poelten were beaten 2-1 at home by Brann of Norway on Tuesday, with US-born Icelandic international defender Natasha Anasi scoring the winner for the visitors. The other groups get underway on Wednesday, when English champions Chelsea travel to play Real Madrid in Group D. Chelsea boss Emma Hayes was on Tuesday confirmed as the next coach of the United States, a position she will take up after this season.

Football: Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas score brace as Barcelona beat Benfica in Champions League

VAR official Tomasz Kwiatkowski has withdrawn from the Champions League’s Wednesday (Nov 29) encounter between Real Sociedad and RB Salzburg after a controversial call on Tuesday. Kwiatkowski, in the VAR hub for the Champions League clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United asked on-field referee Szymon Marciniak to head to the pitch-side monitor and award a penalty to PSG. The incident resulted in massive outrage as many including former players and referees believed it was a poor decision.

<h2>What was the controversy?</h2>

With the contest reaching its conclusion, it were the visitors Newcastle who were heading for a shock win as they led by 1-0 until the controversial moment arrived in the 98th minute. Tino Livramento touched the ball inside the penalty area, which looked accidental and not worthy of a penalty. However, in turn of moments VAR Kwiatkowski asked Marciniak to head to the pitch-side screen. After a long consultation, a penalty was awarded to PSG as they equalised to take control of their fate in the group.

Kwiatkowski, supposed to officiate as the VAR again on Wednesday withdrew before the match started with no official statement from the UEFA. It is understood, considering that a significant error was made, the UEFA was reluctant to face more backlash for another similar incident.

Recently, Darren England, a Premier League VAR referee was also asked to withdraw after he gave a poor call over an offside decision. The impact of the call remained significant as Liverpool lost the match and also remains their only defeat of the Premier League campaign.

In Newcastle’s case, the error by the referee led to the penalty which was converted by Kylian Mbappe and saw PSG walk away with a point. The result had it gone in Eddie Howe’s side's favour could have seen them second in the standings with their fate in their own hands. As thing stand, PSG need to match Newcastle’s result to make it through to the last 16 while AC Milan await at St. James’ Park on the final matchday.

What was the controversy? With the contest reaching its conclusion, it were the visitors Newcastle who were heading for a shock win as they led by 1-0 until the controversial moment arrived in the 98th minute. Tino Livramento touched the ball inside the penalty area, which looked accidental and not worthy of a penalty. However, in turn of moments VAR Kwiatkowski asked Marciniak to head to the pitch-side screen. Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez insisted on Saturday his club were in a dip but not falling into crisis and said president Joan Laporta had full confidence in his project. The Spanish champions have played poorly in recent weeks and fell to an embarrassing 1-0 defeat by Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday in Hamburg.

Despite the loss, Barcelona are still joint group leaders and expected to qualify for the knock-out phases, and are third in La Liga.

The Catalans lost at home to Real Madrid in the Clasico on October 28 and scraped a 1-0 win at Real Sociedad last weekend, despite a drab performance.

"I don't think this is (my worst moment) at all, my worst moment as a coach came last year," Xavi told a news conference, referring to his team's Champions League group stage elimination. "I have lived through terrible crises here, this doesn't go that far, it's a dip ... we haven't played well, we have to recover our game.

Champions League Preview: Manchester United face stern Copenhagen challenge; Bayern, Real on brink of R16

Erling Haaland scored twice as holders Manchester City cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League with two group games remaining after a 3-0 victory over Swiss side Young Boys on Tuesday. Pep Guardiola's side maintained their 100% record and lead Group G with 12 points from four games. Young Boys, who were reduced to 10 men when Sandro Lauper was shown a red card in the 53rd minute, are fourth in the group with one point.

"Still the job is not done because we have to finish first because it's better in the last-16 to have the weapon of the second game at home," Guardiola said. "But the first step to qualify is done, (and) we scored two fantastic goals."

Haaland now has 39 Champions League goals from 34 appearances, and is on course to smash the record for fewest appearances to reach 40 goals, which is 45 games by Ruud van Nistelrooy. The 23-year-old injured his ankle in Saturday's 6-1 trouncing of Bournemouth in the Premier League, raising questions about whether he would even play on Tuesday.

The one negative on the night was the loss of John Stones, who recently returned from a hip injury but was replaced at halftime after suffering what Guardiola said was a muscle issue. "He will be awhile out, it's a pity, it's bad news for us," Guardiola said.

City applied pressure from kickoff and Haaland broke the deadlock from a penalty in the 23rd minute after Lauper's tackle on Matheus Nunes in the box. The Norwegian striker pumped a fist in the air after sending goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi the wrong way.

Phil Foden doubled City's lead seconds before halftime when Jack Grealish spotted him out wide. The England midfielder cut into the box and beat Racioppi with a low shot. Haaland's second goal - and fourth in two games against Young Boys - was a beautiful left-footed rocket from 20 yards out in the 51st minute.

Haaland, who had traded shirts with Young Boys captain Mohamed Ali Camara as they walked off the field at halftime, was substituted to a standing ovation from the home crowd a few minutes after his goal. The score could have been more lopsided as City had numerous near misses including Rico Lewis's attempt that looked destined for the net before it was cleared off the line by Loris Benito.

Belgian forward Jeremy Doku sent in a pinpoint cross after coming on late in the game, but Nunes could not finish. "We knew it's very difficult here, to get a point or a win, you need to have the kind of a game, the perfect game in every phase of the game," Young Boys manager Raphael Wicky said.

City are unbeaten in their last 17 Champions League games since losing 3-1 away to Real Madrid in the semi-finals in May 2022. "To qualify with two games to spare, that is what we wanted to do," Grealish told TNT Sports. "He (Guardiola) gives us so much. In my opinion, he is the best manager in the world. He has shown that over the years. But you can have the best manager in the world, you also need the team. "And that is what we have, a brilliant team on the pitch but also off the pitch we have a brilliant team that is so close. We love being with each other every day and playing with each other."

City host RB Leipzig on Nov. 28 and then cap the group stage with a visit to Red Star Belgrade on Dec. 13.

The Brazilian team claimed its first title in the CONMEBOL South American club competition for the first time in its history after beating Argentina's Boca Juniors 2-1 in extra time.

The 35-year-old defender won not only the Champions League five times in his 16 seasons with Real Madrid but also six LaLiga titles, five Spanish Super Cups, four Club World Cups, three European Super Cups and two Copa del Rey trophies.

In all, he has been on the winning side in 18 of the 21 club-level finals he has played in.

Marcelo, who started Saturday's final and was substituted at half-time, returned to his boyhood club in February after a spell with Greek side Olympiakos following his departure from the Spanish giants.

"Real Madrid will understand. It's my most important title, at club level, because it's the club that raised me," Marcelo told ESPN.

"I'm winning a very important title with my favourite club, the club that gave me all the tools to have my career, with the employees who saw me grow up. There's nothing more rewarding than that. It's priceless," he added.

Winning the Copa Libertadores as well as the Champions League means Marcelo has joined a group of 15 players including Ronaldinho, Neymar and Julian Alvarez to conquer both intercontinental club tournaments.

"I owed a debt to Fluminense. It was written (that we would win the championship)," he said.

Scottish football club Celtic has withdrawn season tickets for a section of the support group known as the Green Brigade after it displayed Palestine flags during one of the matches.&nbsp;

Celtic said it made the decision following the group's consistent failure to adhere to club and stadium rules.

"To avoid any misunderstanding...It is as a result of the increasingly serious escalation in these unacceptable behaviours and non-compliance with applicable regulations that the progressive steps are being taken by the Club," Celtic said in a statement.&nbsp;

The move was fast-tracked after the group coordinated a display of solidarity with the people of Palestine by displaying the flags at the Champions League game against Atlético Madrid last week.

The club had requested its supporters to not bring any political banners or flags which could lead to disciplinary fines from UEFA. According to reports, the governing body of football in Europe is investigating the matter and could soon impose a penalty on the Scottish club.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Green Brigade accused&nbsp;the Celtic board of being hypocritical, citing issues over the club's history and the war in Ukraine. The Israel-Hamas conflict has divided the footballing world. While football club are not taking any sides - a marked departure from their stance at the peak of the Russia-Ukraine war, the players are excerscing their opinion on social media.&nbsp;

While raising the Palestinian flags was the final straw, the group had previously participated in a series of incidents, deemed to be crossing the line by the club.&nbsp;

These included the use of pyrotechnics in the match against Feyenoord in September, displaying an unauthorised banner at Celtic Park on October 4 and displaying violent behaviour towards stewards at Easter Road, Edinburgh, on 28 October.

<h2>What is happening between Israel-Hamas?&nbsp;</h2>

More than 1,500 Israelis have died after Hamas - a terror outfit operating from the Gaza Strip - launched an ambush attack on Israel last month. As a retaliatory move, Israel has been bombing specific terror locations in the Gaza Strip to eradicate Hamas out of existence.

However, more than 8,000 Palestinians have lost their lives as collateral damage, according to the claims made by the health ministry in Gaza, controlled by Hamas. Last week, the Israeli forces launched a ground operation in Gaza which is expected to escalate the conflict.&nbsp;

Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior has signed a new contract with Real Madrid that runs until 2027, the Spanish club announced on Tuesday.

"Real Madrid and Vini Jr. have reached an agreement to extend the player's contract, linking him to the club until 30 June 2027," the club said in a statement.

Vinicius, 23, joined Madrid in 2018 from Brazilian club Flamengo and has developed into one of La Liga's standout players, scoring the winning goal in last year's Champions League final against Liverpool.

His existing contract was due to expire at the end of this season. Local media reported an extension had already been agreed last year, but it was only made official on Tuesday.

The club provided no financial details, but Spanish media reported the arrangement includes a one-billion euro ($1.06 billion) release clause -- identical to those inserted into the contract of several Barcelona youngsters.

"At the club of my dreams until 2027 and for more titles together," Vinicius wrote on his Instagram account. "The biggest and best club in the world."

Vinicius finished sixth Monday in this year's Ballon d'Or voting and also received the Socrates award, named after the Brazil icon, in recognition of his humanitarian work.

Signed by Madrid for 45 million euros as a teenager, Vinicius endured a challenging start to his time in the capital -- scoring just 14 goals in his first three years before a breakthrough 2021-22 season.

Playing alongside Karim Benzema, Vinicius struck 22 times and contributed 20 assists during that campaign as Madrid won the Liga title and a record-extending 14th European Cup.

He scored 23 goals last term, adding 21 assists, as Madrid lifted the Copa del Rey for the first time since 2014.

Following the departure of 2022 Ballon d'Or winner Benzema to Saudi Arabia in June, Vinicius has become the main man in Madrid's attack, but he was slowed by a hamstring injury that ruled him out for most of September.

"I'm happy to be here for this cause. We work in favelas in Brazil and I'm happy to be able to help the youngest ones," Vinicius said after collecting the Socrates award.

He has also become a leading figure in Spain in the fight against racism after being the victim of racist abuse on various occasions during his time at Madrid.

The latest incident occurred during Saturday's Clasico, a game Madrid won 2-1 away to Barcelona.

A video published by Spanish media appeared to show a home supporter calling Vinicius a "monkey", while an object that looks like a banana skin also appears to be thrown from elsewhere.

Vinicius has 24 Brazil caps and played for his country at the 2022 World Cup.

Football: Vinicius Jr signs new four-year deal with Real Madrid, to stay at club until 2027

Andre Onana's last-gasp penalty save secured a vital Champions League win for Manchester United against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday, while Jude Bellingham scored again for Real Madrid in their victory over Braga.

Elsewhere, Arsenal beat Sevilla in the rain in Spain and Harry Kane was on target as Bayern Munich won a tough assignment against Galatasaray.

Before kick-off at Old Trafford, United held a minute's silence in memory of Bobby Charlton after the Red Devils legend died on Saturday at the age of 86.

They marked the occasion by claiming their first points in Group A as Harry Maguire's 72nd-minute header secured a 1-0 win.

The result keeps alive their chances of advancing to the last 16 but they needed Onana to produce a brilliant save from Jordan Larsson's 97th-minute penalty to see the game out.

The spot-kick was awarded when Scott McTominay caught Mohamed Elyounoussi as he tried to hook a ball clear in the box, but Larsson -- whose father Henrik briefly played for United in 2007 -- could not convert the chance.

"It is incredible and a great night. Especially in the dying second when you concede a penalty, but a brilliant save from Andre Onana," coach Erik ten Hag told broadcaster TNT Sports.

<h2>- Kane nets in Bayern win -</h2>

United are now back in contention to qualify but Bayern look set to run away with the group after making it three wins out of three with a 3-1 victory in Istanbul.

Kingsley Coman's early opener for the German champions was cancelled out by a Mauro Icardi penalty on the half-hour mark.

But Bayern pulled away in the second half, with Kane finishing in the 73rd minute to restore the visitors' lead with his 11th goal in 12 games for his new club.

He then set up Jamal Musiala to wrap up the win.

Bayern have now won 16 consecutive matches in the Champions League group phase and have not lost at this stage in over six years.

"I don't know how many group stage matches I've done as a coach, but it's always super difficult -- so it's great to find ourselves with nine points after three matches," said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.

<h2>- 200 up for Ancelotti -</h2>

Madrid, the record 14-time European champions, also have three wins out of three in Group C after Rodrygo and Bellingham scored in a 2-1 victory over Braga in Portugal.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti was taking charge of his 200th game in the competition and he saw Rodrygo open the scoring on 16 minutes before Bellingham fired in just past the hour mark.

It was the England midfielder's third goal in as many Champions League games for his new club, and his 11th in 12 matches altogether since signing from Borussia Dortmund.

Alvaro Djalo pulled one back for Braga, but Real can secure qualification for the last 16 when they host the Portuguese side next.

Napoli are second in the group after a 1-0 win at Union Berlin, who are still without a point.

Giacomo Raspadori scored the only goal in the second half as the Italian champions won without star striker Victor Osimhen.

<h2>- Arsenal win in Seville -</h2>

In Group B, Arsenal bounced back from losing 2-1 to Lens in France in their last game as they beat Sevilla by the same scoreline on a sodden surface at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Gabriel Martinelli ran clear to open the scoring in first-half stoppage time and a fantastic strike by Gabriel Jesus made it two.

Nemanja Gudelj pulled one back for Sevilla but last season's Europa League winners have won just twice in 13 games in this campaign.

"There are not many teams to have won here in the last ten years in Europe and we've done it," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told TNT Sports.

Lens are second, a point behind Arsenal, after coming from behind to draw 1-1 at home to PSV Eindhoven with Elye Wahi cancelling out Johan Bakayoko's opener.

Last season's beaten finalists Inter Milan are joint top of Group D with seven points after defeating Red Bull Salzburg 2-1 at San Siro.

Hakan Calhanoglu’s second-half penalty won it for Inter after Alexis Sanchez's opener was cancelled out by young Israeli Oscar Gloukh.

Real Sociedad are level with Inter thanks to a 1-0 win over Benfica in Lisbon secured by a Brais Mendez goal.

Benfica are still without a point and staring at an early exit.

Champions League: Manchester United face Galatasaray at home, record champions Real Madrid travel to Naples

Manchester United winger Antony could return for Tuesday's Champions League clash against Galatasaray, manager Erik ten Hag said on Monday.

The 23-year-old has not played for United since the first week of September and was withdrawn from Brazil's squad for two World Cup qualifying matches amid police investigations into assault allegations made by his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin.

Antony has denied any wrongdoing.

Last week, the Premier League club confirmed that Antony would resume training. The club had earlier agreed to allow the Brazilian to take a period of absence.

"Antony will be in consideration. Yesterday was his first time back in team training. We have final training and then we make a decision," Ten Hag told reporters ahead of Tuesday's home game against Turkish champions Galatasaray.

"He will be in consideration, yes... He co-operated fully and it's come out that he's not charged."

Ten Hag also confirmed that Argentine Lisandro Martinez would have to undergo surgery for a foot injury. The United defender has been ruled out of action for an extended period, after aggravating an injury he suffered in April.

United go into their game against Galatasaray off the back of a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday which dropped them down to 10th in the Premier League standings.

It was their fourth league defeat of the season -- making this their worst start to a top-flight campaign since 1989-90.

Despite United's recent struggles, Ten Hag said his team were "moving forward", adding: "You have to make adjustments. We don't have a full-back on the left side. There are shortages in our game.

"A lot of positives, but at the end of the day it is about results and we didn't get it."

United are bottom of Group A in the Champions League, after a 4-3 defeat at Bayern Munich in their opening match last month, but defender Raphael Varane said they possessed the quality to win the Champions League.

"You need to be efficient to win trophies. We have the quality in the squad to win competitions. We have to move forward and improve," Varane told reporters.

"The competition is difficult, you have to take care of every detail but we have a team of quality, of good mentality.

"We have to make some improvements, it was not the start to the season we expected but I still believe we have the quality to compete with the best teams in the world."

Champions League: Manchester United star set for return in Galatasaray clash, confirms Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is starting to feel the heat from frustrated fans of the Red Devils after a disastrous start to the season has left hopes of Premier League glory already looking forlorn.

For the first time in the Premier League era United have lost three of their opening five games and face a daunting task to open their Champions League campaign away to Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Ten Hag had been sheltered from criticism in the early weeks of the campaign as supporters concentrated their anger towards a series of off-field issues.

Despite the fans' desire to see them gone, the Glazer family appear to have put a process to sell the club on hold.

Brazilian winger Antony has been given a leave of absence to fight domestic abuse allegations made by his ex-girlfriend.

Meanwhile, United decided Mason Greenwood had no future at Old Trafford last month despite abuse charges against the 21-year-old being dropped.

Ten Hag was credited for returning United to the Champions League by finishing third in the Premier League last season and ending the club's six-year trophy drought by winning the League Cup.

However, he was the target for a chorus of boos when he substituted new signing Rasmus Hojlund midway through the second-half of Saturday's 3-1 home defeat to Brighton.

The Dutch coach tried to spin that moment into a positive show of support for Hojlund, who was making his home debut after a £64 million ($79 million) move from Atalanta.

The Dane has only recently returned to fitness and Ten Hag could ill afford to lose another key player by forcing him to play 90 minutes too soon.

But United's bet on the 20-year coming good in the long run could face a backlash should they be undone by Harry Kane in Germany.

Despite their need for a striker, United never tested Tottenham's resolve for the England captain, who instead joined Bayern in a 100 million euro ($110 million, £86 million) deal.

Kane has hit the ground running with four goals in as many starts, while Hojlund is yet to find the net for United.

Champions League: Erik ten Hag faces heat from fans as Manchester United gear up for Bayern Munich clash

The new stoppage-time rules that English soccer has enacted this season to avoid time wasting are "absurd" and will not be used in UEFA competitions, said Zvonimir Boban, the European governing body's chief of football, on Wednesday.

Following FIFA's approach at the men's and women's World Cups, England's referees body said in July officials would add on the exact time lost to goal celebrations, substitutions and injuries.

The aim is to increase the time the ball is in play, with games now routinely going beyond 100 minutes in total.

Manchester city midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester United defender Raphael Varane and global players' union FIFPRO have criticised the new approach, saying it will increase player workload in an already packed schedule.

"It's absolutely absurd," former AC Milan and Croatia midfielder Boban told reporters in Monaco. "Regarding player welfare, it's some kind of small tragedy or big tragedy because we are adding almost 12, 13, 14 minutes.

"When you play 60, 65 minutes - I can speak from my experience, especially as a midfielder - when you get tired, it's the last 30 minutes of the game. And then somebody comes and adds another 15 minutes.

"How often we have spoken critically about the calendar and too many games. We are not listening to players and coaches ... It's crazy. It's too much, so we will not do this. Our guidelines are different."

UEFA's chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti backed Boban and said the governing body had been working for five years to increase the time the ball was in play during its competitions.

"There is something more important than the accuracy of additional time," Rosetti said. Why do people like the Champions League so much? Because it's intensive, it's fantastic, the players never stop.

"We tell our referees to speed up the restart of play instead of focusing on stoppage time."

Fan stabbed to death after clashes at Greece, Croatia Champions League game in Athens

Manchester United signed a 900 million pound ($1.1 billion) deal with Adidas on Monday, renewing the English soccer club's partnership with its official kit supplier for 10 more years.

Manchester United, whose U.S. owners have been considering selling the Premier League club, will return to the lucrative UEFA Champions League this year after securing a top-four finish in the domestic league last season under manager Erik ten Hag.

German sportswear giant Adidas became the club's official kit sponsor in the 2015/16 season, reuniting after 23 years and taking over from Nike after sealing a 750-million-pounddeal, which was a record at the time.

"The new deal increases the focus on the Manchester United women's team since their reintroduction in 2018," United said in a joint press release with Adidas.

United is still in talks to sell itself after American owners, the Glazer family, launched a formal sale process late last year.

Qatar's Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe are among the potential suitors for the club.

The new deal with Adidas, ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season starting next month, will continue the partnership until June 2035, the northwest England-based club said.

The original agreement with Adidas links a part of the yearly payments to the club's participation in the Champions League, according to the company's latest annual report.

A failure by the club to play in the Champions league for two or more consecutive seasons reduces its annual payments by 30% of the applicable amount, according to the deal.

United did not immediately comment on the terms of the new deal. Adidas declined to comment.

"We will combine tradition and innovation to please both the players and the fans," Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden said.

Last month, the 20-times English soccer champions raised their annual profit and revenue forecasts.
