Former five-time Ballon d&rsquo;Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo feels Real Madrid and Brazil winger Vinicius Jr should have won the prestigious award this year, where he stood second, with Manchester City midfielder Rodri taking home the coveted trophy. Ronaldo argued that it was unfair for Vinicius to miss out on winning the most prized individual award in football.
At the Globe Soccer Awards on Friday (Dec 27), Ronaldo didn&rsquo;t mince his words in saying that the Brazilian forward was the rightful recipient of the 2024 Ballon d&rsquo;Or.
Meanwhile, the whole Real Madrid contingent, alongside Vinicius Jr, boycotted the award ceremony in Paris to protest Vinicius&rsquo; omission from the top spot.

For most of the lead-up to the award ceremony, Vinicius was leading the race to win his maiden Ballon d&rsquo;Or; however, on the eve of the event, several reports claimed that Manchester City&rsquo;s Rodri pipped Madrid&rsquo;s superstar, a rumour that became a reality soon after.&nbsp;
The Spanish midfielder was instrumental in Manchester City winning the treble the past season, which included them completing a historic four-peat of league titles.
"In my opinion, he [Vinicius] deserved to win the Golden Ball [Ballon d'Or award]. It was unfair, in my opinion. I say here in front of everybody. They give it to Rodri, he deserved it too, but they should have given it to Vinicius because he won the Champions League and scored in the final,&rdquo; Ronaldo said during the award ceremony.
Despite missing out on winning the Ballon d&rsquo;Or, Vinicius was no short of accolades for his performances this past season, as he earlier won FIFA's Best Men's Player, besides receiving the Best Men's Player prize at the Globe Soccer Awards. On the other hand, Barcelona's Aitana Bonmat bagged the Women's Player of the Year award, maintaining her streak of individual honours.
<h2>&lsquo;The problem is the same&rsquo;</h2>
Ronaldo praised the Globe Soccer Awards for recognising him as the Best Middle East Player of 2024. Since joining Al-Nassr (in 2023) following his unfruitful exit from Premier League club Manchester United, Ronaldo has been in top form, notching up 74 goals in 83 appearances for the Pro-Saudi League club.
He, however, also commented on United&rsquo;s slump, saying it&rsquo;s not the coach but more than that.
"If you have the fish inside and he's sick, and you take him out and you fix the problem, and you put him again in an aquarium, you will be sick again,&rdquo; Ronaldo said.&nbsp;

Real Madrid extended their European dominance on 2 June 2024 after clinching their 15th Champions League title with a 2-0 win over German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund. The contest played at the Wembley Stadium in London saw Real add to their already impressive trophy cabinet while Dortmund lost their second final at the venue having suffered the same fate against Bayern Munich in 2013.

<h2>Real Madrid win 15th Champions League title</h2>

Entering as the favourites to win the Champions League final, Real were completely outplayed in the opening half after Karim Adeyemi had a series of chances. The German youngster almost opened the scoring at the midway point in the first half but failed to capitalise on a thorough ball. Minutes later he again was at the center of things when Dortmund unlocked Real defence and found Niclas Füllkrug who hit the post.

After a quiet first half, Real made some adjustments and got the reward in the 74th minute when a corner was met with a looping header by defender Dani Carvajal who notched the opening goal. The lead was vital as Dortmund were left with no option back to open the backdoors and attack at full throttle. This left their defence vulnerable and provided Real Madrid with openings to score a second goal.

Eventually, in the 83rd minute, the 2022 Champions League winner Vinicius Jr scored the second goal and sealed Real’s 15th title in the competition. Dortmund had a late Füllkrug effort in the Real goal, but it was ruled out for offside.

The title was Real’s sixth in the last 11 seasons of the Champions League as they now stand tall with 15 titles overall. Departing heroes Toni Kross, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal and Nacho Fernandez added a sixth Champions League title to their tally taking them level with Francisco Gento who achieved the same feat with Real Madrid in the 1960s.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti also won his fifth Champions League title, third with Real as he too extended his legacy in the competition. He also had won two titles with AC Milan in his playing days.

Real’s title win also saw them complete the season with a double of La Liga and Champions League. The Los Blancos would later beat Atlanta in the UEFA Super Cup in August as they showcased their dominance at the continental level.

Reliving Real Madrid's 15th Champions League title win at Wembley

Mikel Arteta praised his Arsenal team for how they have coped with a punishing defensive injury crisis as he prepares his men to face Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Gunners are seventh in the new-look Champions League format after three wins in five matches -- one place above the Ligue 1 team.

But Arteta, whose men are also third in the Premier League, is juggling a lengthy injury list.

Gabriel Magalhaes and Riccardo Calafiori, who both missed Sunday's draw at Fulham, were absent from Tuesday's training session, along with Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey.

Right-backs Ben White&nbsp;and Takehiro Tomiyasu are still absent with knee injuries.

"We have to manage a lot of the players, so they're probably not going to be fit for tomorrow and are a doubt," Arteta said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

"I still have 24 hours to make those decisions and hopefully the right ones.... In the ideal scenario, we have to be in charge to make those decisions because it's forcing us to make it for the wrong reasons, but as well, we need to accept the reality and move forwards."

Arsenal stumbled at the start of last month but won four straight games in all competitions before Sunday's 1-1 draw.

But the Spaniard said he was happy with how his men were coping in the absence of a settled back line.

"The good news is that the team still reacts and plays in the way that we want and becomes so dominant, and we want to do that regardless of who plays and I think that belief is within the team and it's really positive," he said.

Arteta said there was an opportunity for defender Kieran Tierney to return -- the 27-year-old Scotland international has yet to feature this season.

"He is ready and he's training really well and he's going to have an opportunity for sure with the way the team is looking at the moment," he said.

"It's for that reason and because he's earned it as well with the way he's behaved and the way he's been with us."

Champions League: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta dealing with defensive injuries ahead of Monaco clash

A gigantic banner proclaiming "Free Palestine" unfurled by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) supporters at a Champions League match has no place in a football stadium, France's interior minister said on Thursday.

The huge banner covered an entire section of the stadium at PSG's home venue of Parc des Princes in Paris Wednesday night ahead of their defeat at the hands of Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid.

As well as the slogan "Free Palestine", the banner showed a bloodstained Palestinian flag, a gesticulating man with a keffiyeh scarf covering all his face except his eyes, the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem and a young boy wrapped in the Lebanese flag.

It was shown as Israel presses military operations against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza and the militant Shiite group Hezbollah in Lebanon and international concern grows over civilian casualties.

"This banner had no place in this stadium," right-wing Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau wrote on X. "I ask PSG to explain itself and the clubs to ensure that politics does not come to damage sport, which must always remain a source of unity," he said, adding such actions were banned by both French football and UEFA.

"If this were to happen again, we will have to consider forbidding banners for clubs that do not enforce the rules," he added.

In a later interview with Sud Radio, Retailleau made no attempt to hide his anger, saying the banner was "unacceptable".

"I want to know more and now how this banner came to be unfurled. The Paris police chief (Laurent Nunez) explained what happened. We agreed on a certain number of things but I am demanding accountability," he added.

<h2>'Scandalous'</h2>

The banner, which was unfurled by the Paris Ultras Collective (CUP) hard-core fan group, was shown above another slogan which read: "War on the pitch but peace in the world."

"The club was not aware of the plan to display such a message," PSG said in a statement Wednesday evening. "PSG emphasises the Parc des Princes is –&nbsp;and must remain –&nbsp;a place of communion around a shared passion for football and firmly opposes any message of a political nature in the stadium."

The president of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France, Yonathan Arfi, described the banner as "scandalous", saying it depicted "a masked Palestinian fighter" and that it also showed "a map where the State of Israel no longer exists" in an image of the Palestinian keffiyeh.

"This is not a message of peace but a call to hatred," he said.

Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that started the war in Gaza resulted in 1,206 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed 43,391 people in Gaza, a majority of them civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory's health ministry, which the United Nations considers reliable.

Hezbollah began a low-intensity cross-border campaign last year in support of ally Hamas after the Palestinian militants' October 7 attack on Israel.

Israel escalated its air raids on Hezbollah strongholds in south Lebanon, Beirut and the eastern Bekaa Valley from September 23, sending in ground troops a week later.

More than 2,600 people have been killed in Israeli strikes since then, according to the Lebanese authorities.

UCL: PSG’s 'Free Palestine' banner has no place in football, says French minister

Liverpool must perform better with and without the ball when they face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday, head coach Arne Slot said after his side had to come from behind to win in the Premier League at the weekend.

Forward Mohamed Salah earned the Reds a 2-1 home victory against Brighton &amp; Hove Albion on Saturday as they recovered to move top of the standings having conceded an early goal.

"Football is played in two moments, having the ball and not. And against strong teams, Leverkusen is one, you need to be good on both sides," Slot told a press conference on Monday as his side prepared to face the German champions.

"We were poor on both sides, not as good with or without (the ball) on Saturday against Brighton, so we need a second-half performance because Leverkusen are at least equal to Brighton with the ball. So we need a much better performance than the first half."

Alongside Aston Villa, Liverpool are the only other team with a perfect Champions League record this season after three games and are second to the Midlands side on goal difference.

On Tuesday, Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso will try to change that, with the former Spain midfielder returning to Anfield for the first time as a coach to take on his old side, who he helped win Europe's elite club competition in 2005.

"It's difficult to say what makes him a special manager if you don't work with him but he is, that is clear," Slot said. "Bottom of the league when he took over, didn't spend much, bought one or two players, had that (kind of) season - it's special," he added, with Leverkusen winning a domestic double last term having been unbeaten in the Bundesliga.

They only lost in the Europa League final to Atalanta.

"I haven't faced him (Alonso) or worked with him but what might be the situation is he worked with incredible managers in the past and played at the highest levels. So he knows what players feel at certain moments."

Alonso also helped Liverpool to the 2006-07 Champions League final, where they lost 2-1 to AC Milan.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher said: "I remember watching him, he was a class player when he was here, so I have good memories of him, his passing range was outrageous.

"I think the fans will give him a great reception but the focus is on getting a result and making sure he doesn't go home happy."

Liverpool can count on defender Ibrahima Konate, who returned to training after coming off at halftime against Brighton.

"He's available to play, and I think also completely recovered, so there is no issue for him not to play because of what (happened)," Slot said. "Then it's up to me to make the decision if he plays or not. But he's in a good place."

Champions League: Arne Slot urges Liverpool to play better ‘with or without ball’ against Leverkusen

Soccer in Spain should have been completely suspended after the worst flash floods in decades swept the eastern region of Valencia last week, killing at least 215 people, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Monday.

Real's visit to Valencia on Saturday was one of the several LaLiga games postponed after the Spanish FA (RFEF) ordered to re-schedule all games scheduled for Valencia at the weekend in addition to seven cup ties last week.

Ancelotti said it was nonsense that in other places of the country the competitions continued as expected and argued that there was no enthusiasm in Spain to play football at the moment.

"Football is a party and you can only celebrate and party when you, your family and everybody is well... When people are not well, you don't party," Ancelotti told a press conference ahead of Real's Champions League clash against AC Milan on Tuesday.

"Football has to stop... For me it does. Because it is the most important of the least important things in life. But we are not the decision makers... We have to follow the instructions of those who are in charge.

"There are many ways to help. Football had to stop and then help. Everyone has been clear about it, nobody wanted to play. It seemed like the right decision... I have no desire to talk about football today..."

Ancelotti said that the 4-0 loss to rivals Barcelona and the disappointment of forward Vinicius Jr not winning the Ballon d'Or award were a distant memory due to the sorrow caused by the tragedy and that he is trying his best to keep the players' mindset in the right place for Tuesday's clash.

Ancelotti, who won eight trophies with Milan including two Champions League titles, said it was bittersweet to face his former club in such circumstances.

"It was supposed to be a special game for me, facing Milan... But there is no meaning in talking about football now," Ancelotti said. "It has been a difficult week, not because of what happened with the Ballon d'Or or El Clasico... It happened and that's that, congratulations to the winners. Our sadness is not about that, it is for what is happening here in Spain."

Our sadness is not about that, it is for what is happening here in Spain." Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Haaland was the star of the show, bringing the blue-clad City fans out of their seats at Etihad Stadium when he scored in spectacular fashion in the 58th minute, leaping high to backheel home Savinho's cross from out of the air.

"I saw it when the ball came in. It's unbelievable. He's a statue. So tall and so flexible," Guardiola said. "I like it, he has this sense of humour. Unbelievable."

Nunes added: "What an amazing goal. I was speechless after that. When he scored a similar goal against Dortmund, I was watching on TV so to see this live it was amazing."

Stones padded City's lead in the 64th minute when he leapt to head home from a superb cross from Nunes.

Both Foden and Stones were instrumental in City's 2-1 Premier League victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, with Foden delivering the corner which led to Stones's stoppage-time winner.

City were awarded a penalty in the 88th minute, for a foul by Angelo Preciado, and Nunes fired his shot past keeper Peter Vindahl Jensen.

While Czech champions Sparta had a few chances on the counter-attack in the first half, City pummelled the visitors with 22 shots to their five on the night, with 10 of them on target.

"We played against the best team in the world," Sparta manager Lars Friis said. "We played against the best players in the world. We handled Haaland well and then he pops up with a goal like this."

City, who drew 0-0 with Inter Milan and then thrashed Slovan Bratislava 4-0 in their first two games, next visit Sporting in the new 36-team league phase, with the top eight automatically making the last 16.

Manchester City enter record books with 5-0 mauling of Sparta Prague in Champions League

Raphinha scored a stunning hat-trick as Barcelona hammered Bayern Munich 4-1 on Wednesday in a blockbuster Champions’ League group clash.

The Catalans had lost their last six games against Bayern but outplayed the six-time winners at the Olympic Stadium with Robert Lewandowski also on the scoresheet, while England star Harry Kane struck for the visitors.

Hansi Flick, who was in charge of the Bundesliga side in a humiliating 8-2 romp over Barca in 2020, led the Catalans to an emphatic triumph which indicated they may be capable of winning the trophy for the first time since 2015 after a decade of disappointment.

Defeat leaves Bayern with only one victory from their opening three group games and in the bottom half of the table, while Barcelona have two wins and are in the top third.

"In my opinion this game could have been a (Champions League) final, to be able to win it in this way, so well, in front of our fans, is quite special and I leave here happy," Raphinha told Movistar. "Getting the second victory in the Champions League was important and now we have to think about the game on Saturday."

Barcelona visit European and Spanish champions Real Madrid in a La Liga Clasico this weekend and warmed up for it in spectacular style.

"If you win this type of game you have to celebrate it, and for the team it's incredible," said Flick. "It gives us confidence to believe in ourselves ahead of Saturday."

Barcelona had not scored in their last four matches against Bayern but were ahead inside one minute, with Fermin Lopez playing Raphinha in behind the visitors' high line.

The Brazilian winger, on his 100th appearance for the club since joining from Leeds, and proudly sporting the captain's armband, stayed cool to dribble around Manuel Neuer and roll home.

Bayern poured forward in response and after having a goal ruled out for a tight offside, Kane struck in the 18th minute to level.

The striker finished acrobatically from Serge Gnabry's inviting cross with Barcelona's defence all at sea.

<h2>Relentless Raphinha</h2>

Barcelona recovered their composure and began to threaten, with former Bayern striker Lewandowski firing wide and Lamine Yamal sliding in to tackle Neuer but seeing the ball roll beyond the post.

Joshua Kimmich was booked for taking out Lopez, who was charging into space in Bayern territory.

The Barcelona midfielder, a ball of energy, created his team's second for Lewandowski. Lopez left Kim Min-jae for dead with a clever nudge, which Bayern complained about to no avail, before knocking the ball across for Lewandowski to turn home.

The veteran Polish striker, 36, has been the chief beneficiary of Flick's arrival after struggling last season and now has 15 goals in 13 appearances.

The unstoppable Raphinha rattled home a superb third before the interval, driving into the area after Marc Casado spread the play out to the left flank and arcing a shot through Dayot Upamecano's legs and beyond the reach of Neuer at full stretch.

Raphinha completed his hat-trick 10 minutes into the second half, controlling Yamal's ambitious pass brilliantly on his chest while on the sprint, before planting a rasping effort into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany reacted with a quadruple substitution, bringing on four household names in Jamal Musiala, Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka.

At 4-1 up Barcelona's fans began to cheer their team's passes as Bayern chased the ball.

"For the fans, I think it was revenge," said Raphinha, looking back at Barca's defeats by Bayern. "As a fan I suffered through those games too."

The winger was thrown up in the air by his team-mates at full-time, clutching his match ball.

Having not reached the Champions League semi-finals since 2019, belief is starting to grow in Catalonia that Flick could help restore their position among Europe's elite.

Bayern, semi-finalists last season, were left licking their wounds.

"The whole team gave 100 percent. So, there's no question about effort, but 100 percent was not enough today," admitted Kompany. "(In the first half) it felt like we could edge this game, that it could turn for us.

"But in key moments we got outdone and for that reason the result is fairly heavy."

Barcelona romps Bayern Munich in blockbuster Champions League clash

Real Madrid duo Thibaut Courtois and Rodrygo are likely to miss the Clasico clash with La Liga leaders Barcelona on Saturday with injuries.

Los Blancos came from behind to beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday, but at the cost of losing goalkeeper Courtois.

"Courtois has been diagnosed with an adductor injury in his left leg," said Madrid in a statement Wednesday, with Ukrainian stopper Andriy Lunin his usual replacement.

Lunin stood in for Courtois earlier in the month after the Belgian suffered a minor hip injury.

La Liga: Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Rodrygo injured, set to miss key Clasico clash

France captain Kylian Mbappe is facing criticism in his home country for skipping their upcoming Nations League games against Israel and Belgium while being available to play for Real Madrid.

The forward picked up a muscle injury last month but made his return to the pitch off the bench in his club's Champions League defeat at Lille last Wednesday.

France coach Didier Deschamps left Mbappe out of the squad he announced on Thursday, saying the 25-year-old lacked preparation, having played too few matches.

Mbappe started Real's LaLiga win over Villarreal on Saturday.

"Either you're injured, and you don't play with your club and you're not called up in the national team," former France international Maxime Bossis told French sports daily L'Equipe on Monday.

"But when you come off the bench in the Champions League and you start a league game, it makes things fuzzy. He's a special player. We've known that with Michel Platini, when we still wanted him with us when he was injured."

In a video released by the French Football Federation (FFF) on Monday, Deschamps said: "Kylian embodies a lot of things ... The interests of the clubs and the interests of the national teams inevitably diverge. We must also remember that the employer is the club, not the federation."

Mbappe's situation is more complicated because the former Paris St Germain player is the France captain after being handed the armband ahead of Antoine Griezmann, who last week announced his retirement from international football.

France, second in Group A, face Israel in Budapest on Thursday and travel to Belgium next Monday.

<h2>INTERIM CAPTAIN</h2>

"(The captaincy) is on my mind. But, as I do every time, the key is to discuss it with the players involved," coach Deschamps added.

"Obviously, with Kylian our captain, and Antoine, who was the vice-captain, both missing, it means there will definitely be others for these two matches."

Griezmann's commitment to Les Bleus was never in doubt as the Atletico Madrid forward played a record 84 consecutive matches for his country between 2017 and 2024.

"As a captain (Mbappe) must be an example for the fans, and he has not been," Fabien Bonnet, spokesperson for the Irresistibles Francais, the main France supporters' group, told L'Equipe.

"What emerges is that the real captain, Antoine Griezmann, is gone."

On choosing the skipper for the Nations League games, Deschamps said: "It’s more about if (I can find) certain players who can handle this responsibility in the moment without it affecting their behaviour or performance.

"That’s why it’s important for me to really know the players on a personal level - their character, their sensitivity -relative to the group."

Kylian Mbappe under fire for skipping France duty but playing for Real Madrid

Holders Real Madrid suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Lille in the Champions League on Wednesday, while Aston Villa defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in a repeat of the 1982 European Cup final.&nbsp;Liverpool continued their flying start under new boss Arne Slot with a 2-0 victory at home to Bologna to secure a second successive win over Italian opposition this season.

Kylian Mbappe made his return from injury for Madrid in France as a substitute but he was upstaged by Jonathan David, whose penalty condemned Carlo Ancelotti's side to a first loss in all competitions since January -- a run spanning 36 matches.

"It hasn't been a very good night for us, we shouldn't look for excuses," said Ancelotti. "We could have equalised at the end but it wouldn't have been deserved."

Canada international David, scorer of a hat-trick in Ligue 1 at the weekend, buried his spot-kick at the end of the first half after Eduardo Camavinga used his arm to block a strike from Edon Zhegrova. Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier produced a string of late saves as the French club clung on for a famous win over the record 15-time European champions.

Villa also enjoyed a night to remember as a brilliant goal from in-form Colombian forward Jhon Duran lifted the hosts past Bayern. Duran's majestic lob in the 79th minute caught Manuel Neuer well out of position and earned Villa their second win in a row in the club's first appearance in Europe's top competition in 41 years.

Harry Kane almost snatched a last-gasp equaliser but Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez pulled off a superb stop to deny the England captain.

"It's unreal to be fair. This is the loudest Villa Park that I've heard since I joined the club, that's for sure, it was hurting my ears at some point," Martinez told TNT Sports. "It's a statement, there's still a lot to play. We want to qualify in the first eight, in the top eight, it's one step at a time."

At Anfield, Alexis Mac Allister prodded in from close range after meeting Mohamed Salah's cross to give Liverpool an early lead.&nbsp;

Dan Ndoye hit the post for Champions League debutants Bologna, but Salah made the game safe with a terrific curling effort in the final quarter of an hour.

Slot is the first Liverpool manager to win eight of his opening nine matches, surpassing even the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Kenny Dalglish, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

"It's hardly impossible to do something special at this club. It says a lot about how we started how players bought into it, the effort put in," said Slot.

<h2>- Juventus resilient as Atletico flop -</h2>

Juventus won 3-2 in a thrilling encounter against RB Leipzig in Germany despite having goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio sent off for handling outside his area. Leipzig led twice through goals from Benjamin Sesko but Juventus replied both times through Dusan Vlahovic, his magnificent second coming just after Di Gregorio saw red on the hour.

Francisco Conceicao's fine solo effort late on won it for Juventus, who are one of seven teams with maximum points in the new 36-team league phase.

Atletico Madrid fell to a humiliating 4-0 loss at Benfica. The Portuguese team went ahead through Kerem Aturkoglu, with Angel Di Maria extending the lead from the penalty spot.

Alexander Bah headed home the third and Orkun Kokcu completed the rout with another penalty. Monaco rallied from two goals down on a sodden pitch to salvage a 2-2 draw away to Dinamo Zagreb.

Goals from Petar Sucic and Martin Baturina had Dinamo on course for victory, but Mohammed Salisu halved the deficit for Monaco before Dennis Zakaria equalised from the spot in the final minute.

Champions League newcomers Girona slid to a second straight defeat after scoring two own goals in a 3-2 home loss to Feyenoord.

David Lopez put Girona ahead before Yangel Herrera turned into his own net and Antoni Milambo then gave Feyenoord the lead.&nbsp;

Donny van de Beek equalised in the second half but Ladislav Krejci's own goal sank Girona as both sides also missed a penalty.

Atalanta strolled to a 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in Gelsenkirchen with goals from Berat Djimsiti, Ademola Lookman and Raoul Bellanova.

Club Brugge picked up their first points courtesy of Christos Tzolis' goal in a 1-0 win at Sturm Graz.

This is the loudest Villa Park that I've heard since I joined the club, that's for sure, it was hurting my ears at some point," Martinez told TNT Sports. "It's a statement, there's still a lot to play. We want to qualify in the first eight, in the top eight, it's one step at a time." At Anfield, Alexis Mac Allister prodded in from close range after meeting Mohamed Salah's cross to give Liverpool an early lead. Champions League: Real Madrid and Atletico suffer shock defeats; Aston Villa, Liverpool and Juventus win

Indian football side Mohun Bagan SG has decided against traveling to Iran for their AFC Champions League 2 clash against Tractor FC. The clash set to take place on Wednesday (Oct 2) will either be postponed or the Iranian side will be awarded all three points as the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) now has a decision to make.

<h2>Mohun Bagan avoid traveling to Iran</h2>

It is learnt&nbsp;that the Indian side wants to avoid travelling to Iran as the country is&nbsp;experiencing high tension due to a war-like situation with Israel. They are also currently observing a five-day state of mourning following the death of a prominent general in its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.

"Our 35 registered players, including seven foreigners, wrote to a club that they don't want to go to Iran now. So we tagged their letters and wrote to the AFC, asking them to either reschedule the match or move the game to a neutral venue," a Mohun Bagan source told PTI on Monday from Kolkata.

"We have decided to not travel to Iran keeping our players' safety and security in mind, because that is paramount. We have also written to the Ministry of External Affairs as their advisory states that you can go to Iran or Israel on your own responsibility," the source added.

According to the earlier plan, the Kolkata-based giants were set to travel to Iran from Bengaluru after their Indian Super League (ISL) clash against Bengaluru FC. However, with tensions rising high in the region several players raised safety issues and wanted to avoid traveling.

As things stand, AFC is yet to comment on the issue and will have a huge call to make in the coming days. With fixture congestion and a lack of slots to adjust the fixtures, it will be interesting to see how AFC deals with the matter. In case the fixture is postponed, it could take place in December at the end of the group stage. However, if the AFC turns down Mohun Bagan’s appeal for a postponement, Tractor FC could be awarded all three points.

Champions League: Kylian Mbappe named in Real Madrid squad to face Lille after thigh injury

The draws for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 season are all set to take center stage as a new revamped format of the competition makes its debut. Unlike the 32-team group stage format, from this season onwards, the draws will consist of 36 teams with AI-driven software in use to determine the competition draw. So what is new in the competition&nbsp;and teams will be excited to participate in this season’s competition, here is all you need to know, including the dates, timings, and the teams.

<h2>When is the draw for the Champions League group stage?</h2>

The draw for the group stage will be held on Thursday August 29.

<h2>At what time will the Champions League draw start?</h2>

The draw for the group stage will start at 5:00 PM UK time and 9:30 PM IST.

<h2>Where will the Champions League draw take place?</h2>

The draws for the Champions League will be held in Monaco.

<h2>How does the new Champions League format work?</h2>

Taking the total number of teams from 32 to 36 in the Champions League, the biggest change will see a transformation from the traditional group stage to a single league phase including all participating teams.

Every club will now be guaranteed a minimum of eight league-stage games against eight different opponents (four home games, four away) rather than the previous six matches against three teams, played on a home-and-away basis.

The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the knockout stages, while the teams finishing in ninth to 24th place will compete in a two-legged play-off to secure a place in the last 16 of the competition.

Teams ranked 25-36 are eliminated from all competitions.

<h2>Why is the draw being done by a computer?</h2>

The new draw system is expected to take around 35 minutes - the same duration as the manual draws for the previous 32-team format with a group phase and knockout stage.

Without the bespoke software, an old-fashioned manual draw for the expanded competition would take four hours and require up to 1,000 balls and 36 glass bowls.

<h2>Is the draw safe and fair?</h2>

UEFA is confident the draw in Monaco is safe from the threat of cyberattack. The software that will conduct Thursday's draw was developed by UK IT company AE Live.

To ensure safety and fairness, there will also be two backup software systems, and the draw will be audited by accountancy firm Ernst &amp; Young.

<h2>When will fans know the fixture dates?</h2>

Rangers exited the Champions League after losing 2-0 to Dynamo Kyiv in the second leg of the third qualifying round on Tuesday, while Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce were knocked out by Lille.

Hosts Rangers paid the price for a harsh second yellow card issued to defender Jefte as Dynamo struck twice in the final 10 minutes through substitutes Oleksandr Pikhalonok and Nazar Voloshyn.

Rangers coach Philippe Clement blasted the referee's decision that left his team with 10 men.

"It's hard for my team. They don't deserve this after these two games versus Dynamo Kyiv. One person with one decision made a really big change for us," Clement told BBC Scotland.

"It's the second time in my career of over 30 years that something unjust has happened. We can only accept it and move forward towards the league and the Europa League."

Clement, who is looking to overhaul his squad in an attempt to challenge Celtic, said the defeat would have serious ramifications for the club's finances.

"Financially, it's a big difference for the club. It will make a difference for the transfers coming in also. I don't expect this rebuild to be done in a few weeks' time."

Ukrainians Dynamo advanced 3-1 on aggregate and head into a play-off tie against Salzburg, who edged FC Twente 5-4 after a 3-3 draw in the return leg in the Netherlands.\

Champions League: Rangers, Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce knocked out in qualification round

It has been a turbulent last 36 hours for German side Borussia Dortmund as the club had two massive departures in head coach Edin Terzic and star defender Mats Hummels with the latter leaving on Friday (June 14). The development was followed by the arrival of Nuri Sahin as the new head coach of the side signing a three-year deal. But what prompted Hummels to leave despite having a solid season where he was even Player of the Match in the Champions League semifinal?

<h2>Hummels leaves on a sorry note</h2>

One of the key and primary reasons for Hummels’ departure was his spat with then-head coach Edin Terzic before the Champions League final. The defender called Terzic out for playing a 'submissive' and 'inferior' brand of football. A Bild report claimed that Terzic was so enraged by Hummels' comments that a violent confrontation ensued between them.

The club interfered in the matter and closed the issue so that they could focus on the Champions League final that took place at Wembley Stadium on June 1.

Another key reason for the defender's departure could be his age as he turns 36 before the end of the year. With age being a big factor in the team’s plans, the board reckoned that there was not much time for football left in the former Bayern Munich player. They wanted a young center-back in his position which could have prompted the exit of the player.

Another reason for Dortmund to part ways with Hummels was that&nbsp;the club wanted to give a clear message to the dressing room&nbsp;that ‘no indiscipline’ will be tolerated by any senior or junior player.

Hummels left Dortmund for boyhood side Bayern Munich in 2016 and returned in 2019. He joins another Dortmund veteran, forward Marco Reus, to leave the club this season. He made 508 appearances during his two spells at the club and scored 38 goals in all competitions while playing in two Champions League finals.

Explained: Why Mats Hummels is leaving Borussia Dortmund as a free agent

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic has offered his resignation, weeks after the UEFA Champions League final, according to German media reports. Terzic's resignation comes after he was allegedly involved in a heated confrontation with defender Mats Hummels in the lead-up to the big European final.&nbsp;

Days before the UCL final, Hummels went on an astonishing rant against Terzic and called him out for playing a 'submissive' and 'inferior' brand of football. A Bild&nbsp;report claimed that Terzic was so enraged by Hummels' comments that a violent confrontation ensued between the duo. The club was forced to intervene and the pair was 'forced to make peace' to focus on the summit clash.&nbsp;

However, weeks after the incident, Terzic has now offered to walk away from the club. The news comes after Hummels' camp seemingly made it clear to Dortmund board that he would only stay at the club if Terzic is sacked.&nbsp;

<h2>What did Hummels say?</h2>

Hummels in an interview, referred to Dortmund's away defeats to VfB Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen during the 23-24 season and called out Terzic.

"I was furious because I was of the opinion that Borussia Dortmund shouldn't play like that - against any opponent in the world. I didn't think it could go on like this," Hummels told&nbsp;Bild.&nbsp;

"I felt insulted in my honour to stand on the pitch in that kit. So submissive, so inferior in footballing terms. The two Stuttgart games and the away game in Leverkusen. That was barricading with 11 men in the box."

Quizzed if he complained to Terzic who was close to being sacked after a slow start to the season, Hummels said:&nbsp;"I gave a lot of suggestions. Really to everyone involved. Just to try and play better football again."

"I went to the coach's office and we talked. With the clear opinion that we clearly have to improve in the forward play."

Hummels then claimed that Dortmund's fortunes improved not because of Terzic but due to the arrival of assistant coaches Nuri Sahin And Sven Bender.&nbsp;

The comments had a negative effect on the team's morale as Dortmund eventually lost the UCL final 2-0 to Real Madrid, who clinched a record-extending 15th title.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The club was forced to intervene and the pair was 'forced to make peace' to focus on the summit clash. However, weeks after the incident, Terzic has now offered to walk away from the club. The news comes after Hummels' camp seemingly made it clear to Dortmund board that he would only stay at the club if Terzic is sacked. Hummels in an interview, referred to Dortmund's away defeats to VfB Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen during the 23-24 season and called out Terzic. "I was furious because I was of the opinion that Borussia Dortmund shouldn't play like that - against any opponent in the world. I didn't think it could go on like this," Hummels told Bild. "I felt insulted in my honour to stand on the pitch in that kit. So submissive, so inferior in footballing terms. The two Stuttgart games and the away game in Leverkusen. That was barricading with 11 men in the box." Really to everyone involved. Just to try and play better football again." "I went to the coach's office and we talked. With the clear opinion that we clearly have to improve in the forward play." Hummels then claimed that Dortmund's fortunes improved not because of Terzic but due to the arrival of assistant coaches Nuri Sahin And Sven Bender. Official: Edin Terzić leaves Borussia Dortmund weeks after leading German side in Champions League final

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said his team would be back for more silverware with the same hunger next season after claiming a record-extending 15th Champions League trophy at Wembley on Saturday.

Los Blancos held off Borussia Dortmund and then struck twice through Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior to secure a 2-0 victory.

"Here there's no danger of our stomachs being too full... tomorrow this club will enjoy another fantastic day with our fans, then to rest, the players will go to the Euros, the Copa America, then we will return with the same desire and hope as ever," pledged Ancelotti.

The Italian lifted the trophy for a record-extending fifth time as a coach and his players jubilantly tossed him into the air during the celebrations.

"This competition gave me fantastic happiness, as a player, as a manager," continued Ancelotti, who turns 65 on June 10.

"My target is to try to repeat the same emotion that we (have) the week after this game, this is the target.

"I have the luck to the be at the best club in the world."

The coach said he rated the team's performance this season as "10 out of 10" after severe injuries to several key players including David Alaba, Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois, the latter of whom started the final.

Madrid, who completed a La Liga and Champions League double for the fifth time in their history, are Spain's dominant force.

That advantage may be further increased by the signing of France striker Kylian Mbappe at the end of his Paris Saint-Germain deal, a move expected to be announced in the coming days.

Madrid will lose German midfield metronome Toni Kroos, retiring from football after Euro 2024.

"What will happen now? Something will happen. We lost an important player, we will have other players to take over," said Ancelotti. "As we have always done, we adapt to the characteristics of the players that we have, to be competitive."

Ancelotti said coming back to Madrid for a second stint in charge was a "gift" for him, having returned in 2021.

The Italian said he was delighted to be at a "family" club, with his son Davide Ancelotti operating as his assistant.

"We're a family, Real Madrid is a family, a football family," continued the coach. "There's a healthy, clean environment. Working in a family is a lot better than working in an industry.

"Obviously he helps me a lot because he can tell me things that nobody else can tell me."

Kylian Mbappe’s transfer saga to Real Madrid could finally come to an end in the coming days as both the player and the club look to start a new chapter. Mbappe, who has already agreed terms with Real Madrid on a lucrative transfer is now awaiting final details before the move is made official. But when could the deal become official as football fans await the next Galactico signing from Real Madrid?

<h2>What is delaying Mbappe's transfer to Real Madrid?</h2>

As things stand, the 25-year-old French captain’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain ends on June 30, technically making it impossible for him to complete any official transfer. Since Real Madrid are negotiating a free transfer, they will need Mbappe to run down his contract which ends on June 30. Had Real paid a transfer fee which PSH could have accepted then the Los Blancos were free to unveil Mbappe as their new player.

Another possible reason for stopping Mbappe’s transfer is the availability of shirt number. It is expected that Real President Florentino Pérez wants the Frenchman to wear No.10 at the club. However, the number is currently unavailable as Luka Modric dons the coveted kit. But the Croatian could announce his retirement any time soon from the club which could free the No.10 shirt.

As things stand, Modric could announce his retirement from football once Croatia exit Euro 2024. He has no desire to move to any other club and wants to retire at Real Madrid while the upcoming Euro should be his final tournament with the national side.

Since PSG are not standing in Mbappe’s transfer, the player could complete this move to Real any time in June. This will also mean the deal will only be made official after the Champions League final in London and not before that.

Another factor delaying the proceedings will be Mbappe’s desire to concentrate on the Euro 2024. If the deal is not completed before the Euros, it is unlikely that it could be completed during the tournament.

Kylian Mbappe Transfer: When could French superstar complete much-awaited Real Madrid move? Here are details

Vinicius Jr's dazzling performances at Real Madrid have put the Brazilian forward in conversation to win his first Ballon d'Or and manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Friday the 23-year-old deserved to win the prestigious award.

Vinicius has netted five times and provided as many assists in the Champions League alone this season to help Madrid book a place in the final, while also scoring 13 goals in LaLiga, which they clinched for a record-extending 36th time last weekend.

The record 14-times European champions will take on German side Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1.

"He's doing a great job," Ancelotti told reporters on the eve of Saturday's league trip to relegation-threatened Granada. "He's still got the Champions League final to come and then he'll be at the Copa America. He's very close, and if he has positive results in both competitions, he could well win it (Ballon d'Or).

"Before I came to coach Madrid, I saw Vinicius on TV and I thought what an incredibly talented player he looked. When I arrived here, that much was clear, and he's improved on many things to enhance that talent.

"He's better at evading his markers now and has improved in front of goal as well. He's done so with a spectacular work ethic on a daily basis, he's focused in training and recovers well after matches.

"He's a highly disciplined professional and he deserves everything he's achieved."

But Ancelotti said the rest of his squad have been just as important in a campaign where several key players at Madrid have suffered injuries.

Vinicius moved to the Santiago Bernabeu from Brazil's Flamengo in 2018.

"He's among the best in the world and this is Vinicius' moment because he brings us so much. He's been important in us making the Champions League final and winning LaLiga. But we mustn't forget how the others have contributed," the Italian said.

"Madrid's time is up until the first of June. After that, who knows, it might be Borussia's moment."

French defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is a doubt for the final after picking up an injury in their semi-final win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

"(Goalkeeper Thibaut) Courtois will play, as will (Eder) Militao. They both need the game time... (goalkeeper Andriy) Lunin has to be ready to play as well. That's why I'll have to assess the goalkeeping issue in the coming games," Ancelotti said on team rotation.

"We're not sure if Tchouameni will make it for the final but we'll do all we can to see if he can recover. The rest will rotate, including (centre back Antonio) Rudiger and Nacho,” he concluded.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti handpicks Vinicius Jr to win maiden Ballon d'Or following stunning season

It was yet another dramatic Champions League evening at Real Madrid’s famous home&nbsp;Santiago&nbsp;Bernabéu&nbsp;as&nbsp;the hosts booked their place in the final for a record 18th time in the competition’s history Wednesday (May 8).

An evening highlighted by a stoppage winner from Joselu for Real Madrid could have had more drama, had referee Szymon Marciniak allowed Bayern Munich’s goal in the 103rd minute to stand. The goal was not allowed to stand while the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), despite&nbsp;being on&nbsp;offer, was not used.&nbsp;

<h2>Why was VAR not used&nbsp;and&nbsp;what does the rule say?</h2>

With Bayern trailing 1-2 going deep into stoppage time, a long ball from the half line&nbsp;was picked&nbsp;by veteran Thomas Muller&nbsp;which&nbsp;was then passed&nbsp;to Matthijs de Ligt. Without wasting&nbsp;any&nbsp;time, De Ligt fired his effort past the Real goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. However, referee Marciniak blew his whistle for an offside flag&nbsp;which&nbsp;was&nbsp;raised&nbsp;by an assistant&nbsp;making&nbsp;the next phase of play void.&nbsp;

Since the whistle had blown when Muller received the ball, De Ligt’s phase of play&nbsp;which&nbsp;consisted of the&nbsp;goal&nbsp;was ruled out.

According to rule books, VAR can only intervene in case of an offside if the entire phase is allowed to&nbsp;be played&nbsp;and results in a goal. But since the whistle had already gone before&nbsp;the goal had been scored, the VAR&nbsp;was unable to&nbsp;intervene.&nbsp;

<h2>When can VAR come into play?</h2>

Had referee Marciniak not blown his whistle and allowed the play to continue&nbsp;which&nbsp;resulted in the goal, the VAR would have&nbsp;been called in&nbsp;to check whether anyone was offside in the build-up.

Considering&nbsp;the whistle had been blown, Real goalkeeper Lunin hardly made any attempt to save the goal-bound effort of De Ligt.

Marciniak’s decision was more controversial&nbsp;considering&nbsp;the referee’s assistants&nbsp;are asked&nbsp;to hold down their flag in case of offside and allow&nbsp;play to continue&nbsp;which&nbsp;could be further reviewed by the VAR.&nbsp;

"We're&nbsp;confident that&nbsp;we'll&nbsp;come back from that score and reach the final,"&nbsp;Mbappé said&nbsp;at a&nbsp;children's&nbsp;event ahead of the second leg in Paris.&nbsp;

Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic said Wednesday that winger Jadon Sancho's excellent performance in his side's 1-0 Champions League semi-final first leg victory over Paris Saint-Germain was brought out by the "big stage".

"He's shown that really often in training. It's maybe not so easy to bring it onto the field, especially when you haven't had rhythm for a while.

"We know his quality and we saw it again today. We knew we needed a performance like that from Jadon."

But the player knows it is only half-time in the tie as Dortmund seek to reach June's Champions League final at Wembley.

"It's not over. We've still got to go to Paris and get the job done there," said Sancho.

Sancho was constantly dangerous on both flanks as well as in the middle on Wednesday, showing the quality which earned him a big-money move from Dortmund to Manchester United in 2021.

"Week in week out, that's how it is. It helps us a lot. When we hear our fans we're so motivated from the start so we just can't wait to play."

Sancho said he hoped to back up the complete performance at the Parc des Princes next week.

"Hopefully I can carry on. I take it game by game. Performances like today, I hope they just carry on."

Sancho said he had not thought about a return to Man United.

<h2>Real Madrid exact revenge</h2>

Having faced humiliation in the semifinal last year against Man City, Real Madrid were in no mood to repeat the same this season. In the 12th minute, Rodrygo picked a smart ball from the flank to score the opening goal of the night. His initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Ederson, but the rebound came swiftly for the Brazilian who made no mistake to make it 1-0 to Real.

However, after that, it was all Manchester City for the rest of the game and dominated the position, but failed to break the Real defence. However, their reward arrived in the 76th minute when Kevin de Bruyne scored from close range after a Phil Foden effort was not cleared by the defence. His equaliser set the tone for the final 15 minutes for City.

De Bruyne had a golden chance in the 80th minute to win the match and the tie but fired high above the goal. The chances were far and few between as the match headed to extra time with scores tied at 1-1. However, neither team wanted to leave the backdoor open and played a congested extra time to force a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, City had a good start after Modric missed his first effort with Julian Alvarez converting. However back-to-back misses from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic left Man City on the back foot before former Chelsea man Antonio Rüdiger converted from the spot to take Real into the semis.

<h2>Arsenal out of Champions League</h2>

Harry Kane came back to bite his arch-rivals Arsenal after they beat the North London side 1-0 on the night. The solitary first-half goal from Joshua Kimmich was the difference-maker as Bayern got the job done to book a place in the semis. They won the tie 3-2 after the first leg had ended 1-1 in Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. They will now face Real Madrid in the semis as the race for the Wembley final heats up.

<h2>City-Real square off in Manchester</h2>

Having served a treat for fans in Madrid with an entertaining 3-3 draw, both the giants of the modern game will head into the contest with an ambition to win the title. Real beat City in the 2022 semifinal over two legs while Pep Guardiola’s men exacted revenge in the 2022-23 season when they beat Real at the same stage. Interestingly, whenever Real and City have faced in the knockout stage of the competition, the winner has gone on to win the Champions League.

Real have never won on City soil and will have a duck to break, they head into the contest on the back of a 1-0 win in La Liga against Mallorca. The win saw them in control of their La Liga fate where they currently sit top of the table. In their last visit to the Etihad Stadium, Carlo Ancelotti’e side lost 4-0 with City advancing to the final to win the Champions League.

City will enter the second leg as favourites though having deposited Luton Town over the weekend. Players like Rodri, Phil Foden and John Stones were rested for the match. City will have the added boost of calling Ederson into the Playing XI, having been passed fit. Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland will also be in the spotlight during the match.

In the evening’s other match, Arsenal will look to put behind their 2-0 defeat at home in the Premier League against Aston Villa aside. The Gunners can still win a double of Champions League and the Premier League, but now face a tough competition with the second leg in Munich. Bayern’s hunger for glory will be intensified after the weekend as the Champions League now remains the only competition to win silverware. Bayer Leverkusen’s win over Werder Bremen officially ended their 11-year reign as the German champions.

Winners of both ties will join Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinal after their wins against respective opponents on Tuesday evening.

Winners of both ties will join Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinal after their wins against respective opponents on Tuesday evening.

Champions League: Real-Man City chase semifinal berth in blockbuster second leg; Bayern host Arsenal in Munich

It was a Thursday (April 11) evening horror show for English clubs in Europe after Liverpool stumbled to a 3-0 defeat against Atalanta at home in the Europa League. On the other hand, West Ham United also dented their chances of Champions League qualification after they lost to Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg ties of Europe’s second-tier competition. The results now have huge bearings on the final outcome of how many teams will qualify for the Champions League from Europe as England now drop in the UEFA coefficient rankings.&nbsp; However, it is Aston Villa who will have suffered the most despite their 2-1 over Lille in the Europa Conference League.

<h2>Aston Villa's aspirations of Champions League qualification dented</h2>

Going into Thursday evening, England were second in the UEFA coefficient rankings, however, defeats for West Ham United and Liverpool meant that England dropped to third with Germany replacing them in second. So as things stand, England will have only four automatic Champions League spots to play with as Aston Villa sit fifth and will have to contend with a Europa League berth. Had England been fifth it would have meant both Villa and fourth placed Tottenham would have played in next season’s Champions League.

Currently, Italy’s AS Roma and Germany’s Borussia Dortmund are qualifying as fifth placed teams from their respective leagues. However, the job is far from done for the latter as Germany has only three teams in Europe while England still has five teams who can boost their chances for more spots in the Champions League qualification.

UEFA Coefficient Rankings

Italy: 18.714

Germany: 16.928

England: 16.875

Spain: 15.062

France: 14.750

Villa though can still dictate and secure a Champions League berth for next season. Considering they win the Europa Conference League coupled with other teams reaching at least the semifinal of their European competitions (Champions League, Europa League), it could see them reach the premier competition. While teams get an automatic Europa League berth on winning the Conference League, Villa’s prize could be even bigger considering their fate is still in their hands.

<h2>Can Villa still miss out on the Champions League?</h2>

In another scenario, Villa could miss out on the Champions League qualification if they win the Conference League and finish fifth in the Premier League. If West Ham United win the Europa League, it will be the Hammers who will replace the fifth placed team in the Premier League as only five teams can qualify from the same league. In this scenario, it will be the fifth placed team that will have to prophet its berth to West Ham.
