Addressing the incident, the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) reiterated its “firm stance against the live export of animals by sea”, in a statement, on Monday.&nbsp;A team, including an NSPCA veterinary consultant, went aboard the vessel to assess the welfare of the animals.

“This smell is indicative of the awful conditions the animals endure, having already spent 2½ weeks on board, with a build-up of faeces and ammonia. The stench onboard is unimaginable, yet the animals face this every single day,” said the NSPCA.&nbsp;

The incident also took place weeks after a ship carrying around 14,000 sheep and 2,000 cattle was stuck off the coast of Australia for nearly a month in sweltering heat after it was forced to abandon a trip through the Red Sea amid attacks from Yemen-based Houthi rebels.&nbsp;

At the time, animal welfare advocates were left appalled, bringing Australia’s live animal export industry under scrutiny.&nbsp;

South Africa's Cape Town hit by ‘unimaginable’ stench due to ship carrying 19,000 cattle

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rated the Newlands pitch as 'unsatisfactory.' The pitch, located in Cape Town, South Africa had hosted the second Test of the two-match series between India and the African nation. The match, however, got over inside five sessions and visitors India won by seven wickets. The match saw only 642 balls being bowled, making it the shortest completed Test in history in terms of ball bowled.

The ICC reached the decision after referee Chris Broad submitted his report. Cricket South Africa now has 14 days to appeal the decision.

“The pitch in Newlands was very difficult to bat on," Broad said in his report, noted the ICC. "The ball bounced quickly and sometimes alarmingly throughout the match, making it difficult to play shots. Several batters were hit on the gloves and many wickets also fell due to the awkward bounce.”

According to the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, a venue gets certain demerit points after being rated as substandard. If that specific venue reaches six demerits points then a ban of 12 months from hosting the games is levied by the ICC.

If the venue reaches 12 demerit points then its is barred by the ICC to host any international games for a period of 24 months. The demerit points, once given to a venue, remain valid for a rolling five-year period.

India skipper Rohit Sharma had also called out the ICC after the Cape Town Test got over. The match saw 23 wickets falling on day 1 of the game with both teams getting all-out once. Rohit had called out the Newlands pitch as nightmare and said: "It's okay for the ball to seam and swing from day one but not when it spins. In my opinion, this is unfair."&nbsp;

"Honestly, I would like to see how the pitches are rated. I want to see that. Whatever... that chart, I would love to see it, how they rate the pitches, because Mumbai, Bangalore, Cape Town, Centurion, all different venues, overhead conditions are different. The pitches deteriorate quite fast when the sun is beating down that hard on the pitch,” he added in the post-match press conference.

The Test series ended in 1-1 draw after India won the Cape Town Test.

According to the Cape Town Disaster Risk Management service, the deaths occurred on the outskirts of the southern port city. Four people died in the Driftsands settlement on the eastern outskirts after floods caused issues with the electricity connections and four children were electrocuted and died in the Klipfontein settlement, said the officials.&nbsp;

These incidents, as per media reports, have been attributed to illegal power connections in many homes in the poor townships on the outskirts of the country’s second-biggest city and while these makeshift electricity connections are deemed dangerous they are relatively widespread.

Anton Bredell, the provincial minister for environmental affairs, reported that the Western Cape region witnessed record levels of rain on Sunday (Sep 24) and Monday, as per AFP.&nbsp;

In the last three days, a storm front hit the Cape Town area and the larger Western Cape province caused rivers to burst their banks and flooding residential areas and major roads, both in coastal regions and inland.&nbsp;

The flood-hit regions also witnessed widespread power outages affecting as many as 80,000 across the province, the national power utility had said previously. However, this number was revised to 15,000, as of Tuesday after the rain eased.&nbsp;

Overall, at least 1,500 structures and 6,000 people were affected by flooding, said the provincial minister.&nbsp;

The recent floods have been attributed to the cold fronts which are a common phenomenon in the Cape Town region and the Western Cape province.&nbsp;

South African city of Cape Town’s public transport system has been paralysed after a taxi strike began last week, which has since turned violent and led to the death of two people, said the police on Monday (August 7). Australia and the United Kingdom issued a travel warning about the potential danger of travelling to Cape Town.

<h2>About the recent violence</h2>

At least two people were allegedly shot dead in separate incidents during the taxi strike in Cape Town on Monday morning, said the police. The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said that the first death occurred when a driver fired shots at a person who was allegedly pelting stones at the vehicles.&nbsp;

“An individual was shot dead and three others injured after a motorist was pelted with stones on Airport Approach Road. The driver responded to the attack by firing several shots,” said Potelwa, as quoted by News24. An investigation has been launched into the incident.&nbsp;

The police on Monday also found the body of a 28-year-old man who had been shot multiple times, said the local media report. Separately, a report by AFP citing local officials said that a police officer was shot dead in a vehicle while patrolling a township 20 kilometres southeast of Cape Town, on Friday night.&nbsp;

“(The) possibility that the attack is related to the ongoing taxi strike cannot be ruled out,” said the police, adding that the officers were “performing crime prevention patrols to quell taxi related incidents”.&nbsp;

According to reports, multiple vehicles have been set on fire and several roads have been blocked due to the protests, which have since left thousands of commuters stranded.

In a statement, the local officials said that two government vehicles had been set on fire and one had been hijacked. This was in addition to four other incidents of torching and stoning of private vehicles and shootings, on Monday, in “clear attempts to target City staff and infrastructure,” the statement added.

As many as 30 people have been arrested, as per local media reports.

<h2>What is the taxi strike about?</h2>

The drivers of the minibus taxis, the main mode of transport for millions of working-class South Africans, went on a strike last week after 15 minibuses were impounded last Tuesday.

The move was said to be in line with a new municipal by-law that allows the city to impound vehicles over offences such as driving without a license, not displaying registration plates or overloading.&nbsp;

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), which called for the strike action, also claimed that around 6,000 vehicles had been impounded since the beginning of the year and said they were “left with no other option” due to “the frivolous impoundment operations run by government.”&nbsp;

Over the weekend, negotiations between SANTACO and the City of Cape Town over the recent taxi impoundments failed. The strikes are expected to go on till Wednesday (August 9).&nbsp;

The strike prevented as many as 456,020 learners and 17,449 staff members from getting to school on Monday, reported Cape Times. Several health facilities reportedly remained closed due to roadblocks and violence.&nbsp;

On Monday, the British High Commission in South Africa issued a notice on Facebook on the unrest, asking travellers to delay driving “to and from the airport until the route is cleared” as “GPS services could divert you into less secure areas or into ongoing protests”.&nbsp;

Similarly, the Australian government on its website said, “Ongoing taxi strikes in the Cape Town area have the potential to turn violent, potentially impacting multiple areas, including journeys to and from the airport.”

It also advised travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa due to the high level of serious crime.”

Cape town taxi strike: At least 2 killed, 3 injured amid clashes; UK and Australia issue travel warnings

The Cape Town Samp Army put on a dominant display on Sunday evening at the Harare Sports Club, further consolidating their position at the top of the points table. The Samp Army first bowled brilliantly and then batted with panache, as they defeated the Joburg Buffaloes by 7 wickets, with 14 balls to spare.

Batting first in the second game of the day, the Joburg Buffaloes had a bad start, losing the wicket of Will Smeed off the first ball for a duck. A 20-run stand followed after that between Tom Banton and Milton Shumba (14), before the latter was sent packing by Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Banton, who scored a fifty in the previous match, was the next to walk back, dismissed for 6. At this stage, the Buffaloes were in trouble and it was Yusuf Pathan, who added 15 more to the cause. In response, the Samp Army got off to a flyer with Tadiwanashe Marumani looking really good at his end and had solid support from Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The openers made batting look very easy under the lights, with the young Zimbabwean doing most of the heavy lifting.

The batters were in such good control that even the very experienced Mohammad Hafeez, who has been dangerous so far in the tournament, could not apply the brakes on the Samp Army. By the end of the fourth over, the Samp Army had reached the 50-run mark without losing any wickets and were well on their way towards a big win.

The crisis would have appeared analogous to the helpless situation described by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in his poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - “Water, water, everywhere, and not&nbsp;a&nbsp;drop to drink”. Even though the city survived the scare with the help of its contingency plan, the threat of “Day Zero” still looms not only over Cape Town but many regions and cities across South Africa.

Numerous discussions and debates have been held on how important is water for human survival and that it is the quintessential element needed for life on planet Earth. Today to find signs of life on other planets, scientists look out for water, as its mere existence increases the chances of finding alien life. However, as the world, which has only 2 per cent frozen freshwater and 1 per cent liquid freshwater, battles water scarcity, it is high time we must ask ourselves where are we headed.

<h2>Survive or perish – the question that the past holds for us</h2>

Open a tap and water gushes out – availability of water has been made so easy that we take it for granted, in most parts of the human-inhabited world. It is this casual availability of water which blinds us from seeing the depleting groundwater levels, soil compression due to which Mexico City is reportedly sinking, and rain and snow failing to fill in surface water like lakes and rivers we rely on.

With respect to the water crisis, we must remember how many strong and established civilisations perished due to drought and water scarcity. Civilisations which were successful in harnessing water thrived and those that failed disappeared in the dust of time.

One of the greatest civilisations of all time, the Mayan civilisation, despite surviving 100 years of drought with the help of its rainwater collection systems and rivers, finally collapsed. The great Akkadian Empire also met with a similar fate due to the arid conditions.&nbsp;

According to the United Nations, around five billion people are likely to face water shortages by 2050 as freshwater sources continue to drain faster. Out of 37 major aquifers in the world, 21 are receding in the United States, India, France and China. With an increase in population and irrigation demands, India's mighty river, the Ganges is depleting every year by an estimated 6.31cm.

With the water table dropping all over the world, countries receiving irregular rainfall and global warming disturbing the ecosystem, the world doesn't seem a happier place. The realities can turn even harsher compared to the crisis the world is witnessing at the present. The earth is parched, dying with receding water levels as scientists scramble to find water on the moon in their quest to make the satellite a habitable place. The time calls for adaptation of better saves to save water and save the earth.

<h2>A sobering warning</h2>

In a report published on Wednesday, the United Nations (UN) warned that the 'vampiric' overconsumption of water by humans is putting the resource at risk. According to the report, about 10 per cent of the "world's population lives in a country where water stress has reached a high or critical level".

The report further warned that "scarcity is becoming endemic" because of pollution and overconsumption. It added that seasonal water shortages will be further increased in areas with strained as well as abundant water. In the report's foreword, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the world is "blindly travelling a dangerous path" as "unsustainable water use, pollution and unchecked global warming are draining humanity's lifeblood”.

"If nothing is done, it will be a business-as-usual scenario — it will keep on being between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of the population of the world that does not have access to sanitation and roughly 20-25 per cent of the world will not have access to safe water supply," Richard Connor, lead author of the report, said.

This, if nothing, sounds like a warning bell for the world to wake up and recognise the calamity that stands ahead of us.

World Water Day 2023: Parched! The drying future of water

The residents of Simon's Town, a city of Cape Town and home to the largest base of the South African Navy, became witnesses to an unusual docking of a US-sanctioned Russian vessel named Lady R in the navy shipyard.&nbsp;

The residents took photographs of six containers being loaded from trucks onto the vessel on Thursday at midnight. People said cranes were seen offloading pallets and cargo crates from the ship onto the trucks.&nbsp;

It is the first time that the US Treasury Department-sanctioned Russian cargo ship has docked since the Ukraine war. The mystery surrounding the docking of the vessel has become a point of discussion in the fishing community, as locals continued speculating reasons behind the docking of the vessel at a military port.&nbsp;

Although the reason behind the vessel's docking remains a mystery, few speculated that it can be a “ship in distress”, others claimed that it was docked for dubious purposes.&nbsp;

Democratic Alliance's defence spokesperson said, “Clearly something is going on,” DA defence spokesperson Kobus Marais. &nbsp;He added that he has sent a message to Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Thandi Modise, stating that she “must explain to South Africans what a sanctioned Russian ship is doing at the Simon’s Town naval base and why there is so much secrecy surrounding it”, Daily Maverick reported.&nbsp;

However, South Africa's naval authorities and National Defence Force maintained silence over the docking of the mysterious ship.

When quizzed, the SA Navy stated that the Navy's chief would speak on the matter on Friday in Gordon's Bay after the military officers' passing-out parade. The navy stated that it wouldn't be able to provide a definite time for the parade's conclusion. The Russian ship is a roll-on/roll-off container carrier, which is 18 years old and has a carrying gross tonnage of 7260.&nbsp;

The vessel sails under the Russian Federation's flag and Astrakhan has been listed as her home port. According to the locals, the vessel docked on Tuesday and since then, it has been offloaded with a crane.&nbsp;

The ship is on its way to Dar es Salaam port in Tanzania. The Russian Consulate, meanwhile, refused to have any information about the ship.&nbsp;

"The captain (according to Russian Consular Statute) or owner of the vessel informs Russian Consulate about calls and stays in ports in case of emergency situations when they need assistance. If everything is fine, captain is not legally obliged to report to Russian Consulate officials about the presence of the ship. At this moment, we do not have information about Lady R's calling to Simon's Town on Tuesday evening," said the consulate on Thursday, News24 reported.

After Ukraine was invaded by Russia in February, sanctions were imposed by the US on Russia. South Africa has avoided using criticism for Russia's actions and abstained from voting against the war in the UN.&nbsp;
