Cannes 2018: Film festival opens with Asghar Farhadi's film

In a first, Michelin star chef Vikas Khanna has taken his directorial debut film “The Last Color” to coveted film festival Cannes this year. The chef cum filmmaker unveiled the first look of his film today.&nbsp;

In an email interview to IANS, Vikas wrote: "The film is about girl education and girl empowerment. I had written the (similarly titled) short story in 2011 when I was shooting in Vrindavan where I was researching around "UTSAV"&nbsp;(his culinary epic of Indian festivals).”

He explained his choice of theme and wrote: "More than the Holi celebrations, I was drawn to stories of some widows who were not playing Holi. I imagined, in my short story, the glorious day when their hope and faith will be filled with colours. In 2012, I saw on the American Yahoo homepage the stunning images filled with emotions when they played Holi. There were a million sentiments in those images, especially the one in which an elderly woman was lying on a ground smeared with colours. She was laughing and crying at the same time. That's when I turned my short story into a novel. But the visits to the ashrams of Vrindavan and Varanasi gave me more stories for this celebration.”

His film, "The Last Color"&nbsp;is currently in post-production and will first make an appearance at the film festivals before it gets released.&nbsp;

This is the fourth time when Vikas Khanna has gone to Cannes. He made his debut in 2015 with the release of book titled “UTSAV” that took 12 years to compile and was presented to a host of world leaders. The 12th copy of the book was auctioned for Rs 30 lakh that went to feed 200,000 underprivileged children through an NGO he supports.

The Michelin star chef wrote a short story on the theme in 2011 which he then turned into a novel and used it to direct a full-fledged film starring actor Neena Gupta

Chef Vikas Khanna takes his film on widows of Vrindavan 'The Last Color' to Cannes

The most celebrated and watched-out film festival is back and so should be your appetite for new films and lots of controversies. Yes, we are talking about the 71st Cannes Film Festival that is taking place at a time when #MeToo and Time's Up as movements against sexual misdemeanour by those in power is in full force.&nbsp;

US director Martin Scorsese and Australian Oscar winner and producer Cate Blanchett, the jury`s president, declared open the Cannes. <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-cannes-2018-this-is-when-aishwarya-deepika-sonam-kangana-will-be-walking-the-red-carpet--133955">Also </a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-cannes-2018-this-is-when-aishwarya-deepika-sonam-kangana-will-be-walking-the-red-carpet--133955">Read:</a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-cannes-2018-this-is-when-aishwarya-deepika-sonam-kangana-will-be-walking-the-red-carpet--133955">&nbsp;Cannes 2018: This is when Aishwarya, Deepika, Sonam, Kangana will be walking the red carpet</a>

While we are expecting lots to happen at Cannes, let’s take a look at five films that we think will be making a lot of noise at the festival and otherwise:

Everybody Knows

The annual fair started with the screening of in competition film <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/entertainment-cannes-2018-film-festival-opens-with-asghar-farhadis-film-135615">"Everybody Knows"</a> of Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, with Spanish star Penelope as the main actress opposite her real-life husband and actor Javier Bardem who have reunited for the first time since they starred in the hit film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”. The film is a psychological thriller that marks the Spanish-language debut of the Academy Award-winning director Asghar. It centres on the secrets that come to light when Cruz returns to her Iberian hometown.&nbsp;

BlacKkKlansman

It is an out and out socially conscious project, coming from Spike Lee who tackled with race issues in “Do the Right Thing” and “Malcolm X”. John David Washington (son of Denzel) portrays the role of an African-American policeman Ron Stallworth, who infiltrated the KKK to gather intelligence in the 1970s.&nbsp;

Three Faces

This film took a toll on the Iranian director Jafar Panahi who suffered at the behest of his film. His government imposed a 20-year filmmaking ban and placed him under house arrest as they convicted him of creating "propaganda against the system". Competing for the Palme d'Or, this film takes us through the adventures of three Iranian actresses at different stages in their careers.&nbsp;

Under the Silver Lake

From the company that delivered critically acclaimed films like “Moonlight”, “Ex Machina” and “Lady Bird”, “Under the Silver Lake” is a movie set in the underworld of hipster Los Angeles. In the film, Riley Keough vanishes and his neighbour Sam (Andrew Garfield) sets out to find her -- establishing the mysterious circumstances that led to her disappearance.&nbsp;

Climax

The film "Climax" will bring a story of a group of street dancers who enter a drug-fuelled insanity as the film has carnally focused plotlines. Like his previous presentations, the film is explicit and is expected to drive a multitude of emotions in the audience. Judging by his previous film premieres, people might leave booing, screaming and shouting from it.&nbsp;

You have to know about these films if you are an ardent Cannes film festival follower

The other delegates will include Ashok Kumar Parmar, Joint Secretary (Films), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Vinod K. Jacob, Joint Secretary, (ED), Ministry of External Affairs Censor Board Chairperson Prasoon Joshi, Censor Board member Vani Tripathi Tikoo, filmmakers Shaji N. Karun, Jahnu Barua and Bharat Bala, as well as actress Parvathy.

Tikoo feels the domestic boundaries within Indian cinema need to go.&nbsp

"It`s either good or bad cinema. The thrust has to be on Indian cinema as good narratives are coming from every region," Tikoo told IANS, adding that it`s high time that as one of the largest film producing nations in the world, "we start respecting our cinema".

She rued how films from languages other than Hindi find relevance within India after gaining "olive branches", referring to the laurel wreaths that movies flaunt after touring international film festivals.

"It should be the reverse," averred Tikoo, who said the idea behind taking such titles to Cannes -- "the largest film market" -- is to ease the struggle a bit for films which have fantastic narratives, but find it hard to get the right exhibition platform.

Bala, known for patriotic videos like "Vande Mataram" and "Jana Gana Mana", pointed out that in the last several years, most Indian films which have got a positioning at foreign fests are regional titles.

"With the presence at Cannes Film Festival, the idea is to get them into the market, find a larger distribution stream and to work on existing co-production treaties," Bala was quoted as saying to a news agency

Actress Rasika Dugal, who will be in Cannes for "Manto", finds it a great initiative.

"There`s a lot of beautiful work happening in films in different parts of India which we don`t hear about... We either get to see it at a film festival or through a friend... So, I think it`s high time it gets a push," Rasika said.

The films apart, the delegation`s focus will be on leveraging co-productions with the countries with which India has co-production treaties, along with the other potential countries, promote ease of film shooting in India and position the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) at festival circuits.

The India Pavilion will also see the launch of "T for Tajmahal", poster of "Bhonsle" by actor Manoj Bajpayee and producer Devashish Makhija, and actor Dhanush-starrer Indo-French co-production "The Extraordinary Journey Of Fakir".

At the main fest, two women filmmakers` projects from India have made it to competition sections. Das` Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer "Manto" is in the Un Certain Regard Section, while Gera`s "Sir" is in the Cannes Critics` Week sidebar.

On the red carpet too, there will be women power galore as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Huma Qureshi and Mallika Sherawat will be seen walking the red carpet for various brand endorsements, while actors like Rasika and Tillotama Shome will represent their movies.

"Thank you for all your good wishes that have been pouring since the announcement... While Cannes is the most prestigious platform for the film, and a great start, the journey will be complete only when we get to share it with you," she wrote.

"Having been on the jury twice, and an audience at Cannes many a time, I have to say, it is truly a haven for film lovers. The director said she will give finishing touches to the film before it heads to the festival.

Das had unveiled the first look of the film at Cannes last May with stars Siddiqui and Rasika Dugal.

Manto, best known for his stories on Partition, was born on May 11, 1912 and migrated to Pakistan after 1947 and died at the age of 55 on January 18, 1955.

The film chronicles four years of Manto's life - two years before the Partition and two years after that - the most creative yet the most turbulent period for the writer.&nbsp;

Cannes 2018: Nandita Das' 'Manto' featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui selected in Un Certain Regard segment

The organisers of Cannes Film Festival have banned selfies on its red carpet.

The news was shared by festival director Thierry Fremaux in an interview with Variety, saying the art of taking selfies on red carpet is "ridiculous".

"We haven't thought out in practical terms how to carry out this new measure. Since we are not policemen, we will trust attendees and their understanding of the situation: Selfies on the red carpet, in a continuous and touristy way, are ridiculous.

"It tarnishes the quality and tempo of the ascending the steps. Some are protesting and commenting negatively but selfies didn't exist 10 years ago, it's obviously not the most important thing in the world. We go to Cannes to see movies, not to take selfies," Fremaux said.

He said his job is to preserve the "prestige" of the festival.

"...When we're standing on top of the stairs, we can see the vulgarity and the grotesque aspect of those taking selfies on the red carpet and that's when it becomes a vast mess," he added.&nbspFremaux also talked about the festival's new rule which stated that any film which is selected to compete for Cannes will have to be released in French theatres.

The rule was announced last year and was specifically aimed at Netflix-backed projects. Last year, Bong Joon-Ho's Okja&nbspand Noah Baumbach's The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)&nbspwere screened at the Cannes.

"Last year, I thought I could convince Netflix but they refused (to release films in theatres). That's their economic model, and I respect it. But we are all about cinema and we wish to have films that play in competition get released in theaters. That's the model of film lovers and Netflix must respect it as well.

"But Cannes aspires to welcome all sources of contemporary creativity, and today Amazon and Netflix&nbspand tomorrow perhaps Apple represent something important. Especially because they work with brilliant filmmakers, some of whom are among Cannes' returning auteurs. These new partners of the film sector have a very strong economic footprint. We will eventually come up with a good agreement," Fremaux said.&nbsp

Following numerous allegations of sexual harassment, assault and rape, a British actress has now accused movie mogul Harvey Weinstein of violating sex trafficking laws in Cannes, France.

According to Page Six, aspiring actress Kadian Noble claimed the disgraced producer invited her to his hotel room during the Cannes film festival in 2004 claiming he wanted to cast her in a forthcoming movie.In the lawsuit, she also claimed that the disgraced studio mogul proceeded to grope her before trapping her in the bathroom and forcing her to perform sexual acts.

According to Noble`s lawsuit, she alleges that during the encounter, Weinstein told her, &quot;Everything will be taken care of for you if you relax.&quot;The lawsuit is not aimed only at Harvey Weinstein but also his brother, Bob, and their company the Weinstein Company, citing &quot;reckless disregard&quot; on their parts.

Kadian also noted that Weinstein then called an unnamed Weinstein Company producer in the US, who told Kadian &quot;that she needed to be `a good girl and do whatever he wished,` and if she did, then `they would work` with her further.

&quot;That`s when Weinstein pulled Kadian closer and &quot;groped her breasts,&quot; the lawsuit said.The lawsuit then described the alleged assault, including Weinstein pulling down the actress` shirt, &quot;revealing her breasts,&quot; while unbuckling his pants and belt.In response, Weinstein`s spokesperson has denied the claims.

Weinstein`s representative noted, &quot;Mr Weinstein denies allegations of non-consensual sex. Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances.&quot;&nbsp;

The suit comes on the same day as a civil claim in the UK from an anonymous woman, who alleges that she was also sexually assaulted by Weinstein.The authorities in different cities are collaborating to try and build a legal case against the producer.

Los Angeles detectives have been interviewing witnesses in preparation for a case to present to the district attorney; the NYPD has been investigating two rape complaints; and in London, three other cases are being handled.&nbsp;

Here are the winners from the 2017 Cannes film festival, as chosen Sunday by a star-studded jury led by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.&nbsp;

Palme d&#39;Or: &#39;The Square&#39;&nbsp;

Swedish film &quot;The Square&quot;, a dark satire of the contemporary art world, was the surprise winner of the top Palme d&#39;Or prize at the world&#39;s biggest film festival.&nbsp;

The film, a savagely funny takedown of political correctness and the things we choose to hang in art galleries, had premiered to strong reviews -- but even director Ruben Ostlund was shocked as he picked up the award, shouting, &quot;Oh my God, oh my God!&quot;

Grand Prix: &#39;120 Beats Per Minute&#39;

&quot;120 Beats Per Minute&quot;, a moving drama set in Paris at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the early 1990s, scooped second prize for its wrenching portrayal of a romance between two activists in the advocacy group ACT UP.

The film was a deeply personal project for director Robin Campillo, who was himself an activist in the French branch of the group that helped shame the world into action.

Jury Prize:&nbsp;&#39;Loveless&#39;&nbsp;

&quot;Loveless&quot;, a bleak tale of a middle-class couple in Moscow looking to offload their child as they go through a bitter divorce, came in third.

The film by Kremlin critic Andrei Zvyagintsev offers a stinging critique of modern Russian society, depicting a country obsessed with consumerism and its smartphones.

Best actor: Joaquin Phoenix&nbsp;

Triple Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for playing a traumatised hitman in Lynne Ramsay&#39;s ultra-violent &quot;You Were Never Really Here&quot;.

He gives an electrifying performance as Joe, a former soldier who is hired by a New York state senator to rescue his daughter from a paedophile ring.

Best actress: Diane Kruger

In her first film role in her native German, Hollywood star and former model Diane Kruger swapped her usually glamorous image to play a mother who vows revenge after her ethnic Kurdish husband and son are killed in a neo-Nazi attack.

Hailed as a &quot;powerhouse performance&quot; by Variety magazine, Kruger said the role had taken a huge emotional toll. &quot;The film almost killed me,&quot; she said at Cannes. &quot;I haven&#39;t worked since.&quot;

Best director: Sofia Coppola&nbsp;

Sofia Coppola picked up best director for her remake of the American Civil War thriller &quot;The Beguiled&quot;, starring Colin Farrell as a soldier who bewitches several Southern women including Nicole Kidman.

Collecting her award, the &quot;Bling Ring&quot; director thanked her father -- &quot;Apocalypse Now&quot; director Francis Ford Coppola -- for teaching her the tricks of the trade.

Best screenplay:&nbsp;Lynne Ramsay and Yorgos Lanthimos

The nine-member jury opted to split the screenplay prize in two, dividing it between Scottish director Lynne Ramsay for &quot;You Were Never Really Here&quot; and Greece&#39;s Yorgos Lanthimos for &quot;The Killing of a Sacred Deer&quot;, a chilling suburban thriller starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman.

Special prize: &#39;Nicole Kidman&#39;

Nicole Kidman was the undisputed queen of this year&#39;s Cannes with four projects showing. To mark its 70th birthday, the festival rewarded her with a special prize.

Hold still, Aishwarya Rai Bacchan shares her first outfit for Cannes 2017

The dollar gained Wednesday after the Federal Reserve signaled it was on track to gradually lift interest rates, raising expectations it will again act in June.

The wording of the Fed&#39;s policy statement strengthens the prospect of two more increases in the benchmark lending rate this year, boosting the dollar against the euro and other major currencies.

Global equity markets were mixed. The Dow finished slightly higher, while the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq both fell modestly. Frankfurt rose modestly, while London and Paris dipped.

The Fed gave a generally upbeat outlook on the US economy, saying that some weak data in the first quarter were &quot;likely to be transitory&quot; and predicting that economic activity would expand &quot;at a moderate pace.&quot;

Several analysts said the statement clears the way for the US central bank to lift rates next month, although that partly depends on US data. A key release comes Friday with issuing of the US jobs report for April.

&quot;Given the tone of the statement, we believe the bar for inaction in June is high,&quot; a note from Barclays said. &quot;The committee seems eager to look through any weakness and has, at long last, reached a consensus, in our view, that a gradual pace of rate hikes this year is warranted.&quot;

The euro was down against the dollar ahead of Sunday&#39;s second round of France&#39;s presidential election, in which moderate Emmanuel Macron is expected to beat his far-right, anti-EU opponent Marine Le Pen. The two candidates traded insults in a heated TV debate on Wednesday ahead of this weekend&#39;s runoff.

Crude prices remained under pressure after the US government reported a much smaller fall in oil stocks than analysts had expected.

In earnings news, Apple shed 0.3 percent after reporting a 4.9 per cent rise in second-quarter profit to $11 billion. But iPhone sales came in slightly lower than in the year-ago period.

Media shares fell sharply following results from Time Warner that were generally strong, but included disappointing advertising revenue at its Turner broadcasting division. Analysts worry that the growth of streaming services is hitting broadcasting profits.

Disney lost 2.4 per cent, Twenty-First Century Fox, 5.1 per cent and Viacom, 7.3 per cent. All three will report earnings in the coming days.

French oil giant Total meanwhile lost the top market capitalization spot in the Paris CAC 40 index on Wednesday, making way for the luxury behemoth LVMH.

Cannes jury chief Pedro Almodovar fired a warning shot at streaming giant Netflix declaring that the film that wins the festival&#39;s top prize should be shown in cinemas.

The online giant has refused to show two of its movies in the running for the Palme d&#39;Or in French cinemas because strict rules there mean it would then have to wait three years to put them online.&nbsp;

Spanish director Almodovar told reporters at Cannes that it would be &quot;an enormous paradox if the Palme d&#39;Or went to a film that cannot be seen in cinemas&quot;.

Netflix, which streams films and television shows to subscribers, has two of the hottest movies in contention for the Palme d&#39;Or - its first time in competition at the festival that France boasts is the greatest in the world.

But, in a country where movies shown in cinemas cannot be streamed for three years, Netflix refused to arrange distribution across France - meaning &quot;Okja&quot;, starring Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal, and &quot;The Meyerowitz Stories&quot;, with Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman, will not be seen on the big screen after their Cannes premiere.

The outcry from French cinemas was such that there were rumours the two movies would be excluded at the last minute.

&quot;Cannes is a film festival in theatres, and, for the territory of France, we would like to have all the films competing in Cannes available in theatres,&quot; festival director Thierry Fremaux told Reuters in an interview.

&quot;Netflix&nbsp;decided to go first via the internet, so French theatres protested, and they are right, because cinema is first of all in theatres,&quot;&nbsp;he added.

Europe has been taking a tough stand against online channels. Last week European Union&#39;s top court declared Uber to be a transport service and not a technology company. Uber considers itself as&nbsp;an intermediary service between car drivers and passengers but the EU court clearly did not agree with Uber&#39;s argument.&nbsp;

Three years ago European Parliament had backed a motion urging anti-trust regulators to get tough on Google. The parliamentarians wanted Google to be broken if it did not stick to European Union competition rules.

Cannes jury chief takes a dig at Netflix

Controversial director Roman Polanski -- who is still wanted in the United States for the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl -- will premiere his new film at the Cannes film festival next month, the organisers said Thursday.

&quot;From a True Story&quot; -- which stars Polanski&#39;s French wife Emmanuelle Seigner and former Bond actress Eva Green -- will be shown in Cannes outside the main competition.

The maker of &quot;Chinatown&quot; and &quot;Rosemary&#39;s Baby&quot; was forced to withdraw from the &quot;French Oscars&quot; -- the Cesars -- earlier this year after protests by feminists.

Polanski has been on the run for almost four decades for having unlawful sex with the teenager at film star Jack Nicholson&#39;s house in Los Angeles in 1977.

Polanski, 83, failed to negotiate a return to the US this month.

However, his victim Samantha Geimer -- who wants the case dropped so she can get on with her life -- lashed out Tuesday at prosecutors, claiming they were using the case to further their careers rather than resolve it.

&quot;Celebrity cases should not be misused by those like yourselves for some limelight and career advancement,&quot; Geimer wrote in a scathing letter to Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey and his deputy Michele Hanisee, who are handling Polanski&#39;s case.

The Franco-Polish director has been engaged in a decades-long cat-and-mouse game with US officials seeking his extradition, before a global audience split between continuing outrage and forgiveness for his acts.

Polanski admitted statutory rape after a number of more serious charges were dropped, and spent an initial 42 days in jail before being released.

But in 1978, convinced a judge was going to scrap his plea deal and send him to prison for decades, he fled to France and has been on the run ever since.

&quot;From a True Story&quot; centres on a female writer who is plagued by an obsessive admirer.

Cannes festival organisers also announced that Swedish director Ruben Ostlund&#39;s drama &quot;The Square&quot; has been added to competition for the festival&#39;s top prize, the Palme d&#39;Or.

Chinese director Li Ruijun, best known for &quot;Fly with the Crane&quot; is another late entry into the sidebar competition Un Certain Regard with &quot;Walking Past the Future&quot; alongside Argentinian film &quot;La Cordillera&quot;&nbsp;by Santiago Mitre.

The Cannes film festival runs from May 17 to 28.

Fugitive director Polanski's new film to be premiered at Cannes

100 Years: The Movie You Will Never See&nbsp;is a film that, as the name says, you will not be able to see in your lifetime. The movie, which is inspired by the 100 years it takes for a bottle of Louis XIII to get ready, is scheduled to be released in the year 2115.

Inspired by the drink, which is literally &lsquo;One Century in a Bottle&rsquo;, the movie is directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Oscar-nominated actor John Malkovich, who also happens to be the writer of the film.

On November 18, 2015, the duo released three teaser trailers of the film. The teasers show three different possible futures that we are moving towards, from a dystopian world to one that is technology-driven.

However, the filmmakers have not included any actual footage from the movie in the teasers. In fact, they have gone at great lengths to keep the movie&rsquo;s plot a secret.

For instance, they&rsquo;ve kept the final product locked in a high-tech safe, which is itself inside a bulletproof glass casing. The case is time-proof and will automatically open for access on the premiere release date, which is November 18, 2115.
