Singer Sarah Harding has documented her battle with breast cancer in her biography. She talks about the "little victories" in her struggle.

"MRI scans at the end of December revealed that the tumours in my brain and in my lung have shrunk a bit with the treatment. (I don`t know) exactly what this means (but) right now, every little victory feels momentous. With this news under my belt, I was able to enjoy a relaxing quiet Christmas with mum and yes, I got plenty of lovely Christmas pressies. At the moment, I`m just grateful to wake up every day and live my best life, because now I know just how precious it is," she writes at the end of the book, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

In an earlier interview, Sarah had spoken about how doctors had announced that Christmas last year would be her last.

"In December, my doctor told me that the upcoming Christmas would probably be my last," she recalled.

She added that she is focussing on living in the moment now. "Comfort and being as pain-free as possible is what`s important to me now. I`m trying to live and enjoy every second of my life, however long it might be. I am having a glass of wine or two during all this, because it helps me relax. I`m sure some people might think that`s not a great idea, but I want to try to enjoy myself. I`m at a stage now where I don`t know how many months I have left. Who knows, maybe I`ll surprise everyone, but that`s how I`m looking at things," she said.

If you have been contemplating joining a gym and going for a morning jog, scientists have an easy for you — yes!

Since the pandemic began and several countries went into repeated lockdowns, a lot of people started gaining weight due to lack of exercise and increased intake of unhealthy food. This has led to more people becoming obese and overweight.

This, researchers believe, can lead to increased chances of getting infected with cancer.

Obesity and being overweight leads to people being vulnerable to tissue damage and the development of a tumour. Scientists have warned individuals to start eating healthy and have urged people to start exercising, be it in-home or in parks.

Researchers have found out that while smoking and tobacco are still the number one cause of cancer in the UK, obesity is a very close second reason now, especially after the extended lockdown. Scientists have also warned that obesity can soon become the main cause of cancer if not controlled now.

This change has also come as more people are now turning away from smoking and tobacco but more and more people, especially women, are becoming overweight and obese.

The scientists have also observed that people who exercise regularly and have improved and healthy diets have had fewer chances of cancer returning after recovery, especially in cases of breast and bowel cancers.

In an experiment carried out on mice, scientists observed that a group of mice who led a lifestyle with no or less physical activity had increased levels of liver inflammation, leading to tumours, in comparison to the group of mice who were placed on treadmills for half-hour, three times a week.

Another similar study found that mice who exercised had less fat in their liver. "We wanted to see if exercise in mice – crucially, a gentle routine that may mirror exercise achievable for frailer people – could help throw immune decline into reverse and help reduce the risk of liver tumours developing," said Prof Derek Mann, Newcastle University Centre for Cancer.

Exercising can help reduce chances of cancer: Study

British scientists have developed a test to detect womb cancer using urine samples. The researchers said on Friday that the method could replace a painful and invasive procedure currently in use.

Womb cancer is the sixth most common cancer in women, with an estimated 382,000 new diagnoses and 89,900 deaths from the disease in 2018 worldwide. While most women receive early treatment after the onset of symptoms, which include bleeding after menopause, 20 per cent of women who are diagnosed at an advanced stage have only a 15 per cent chance of surviving beyond five years.

At present, clinicians diagnose the cancer by taking a biopsy, a process which requires a narrow telescope called a hysteroscope, to examine inside of the uterus and remove cells. But it has also been found that nearly a third of women who undergo the procedure have the process repeated because of technical difficulties or intolerable pain.

The study from Manchester University, to this end, has developed a new detection tool which examines urine or vaginal samples that can be collected by women on their own at home.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, showed analysis of the samples correctly diagnosed 91.7 per cent of women with womb cancer.

The proportion of women without womb cancer who tested negative with the new tool was 88.9 per cent, the study showed.

"Women who test positive with this test could be referred for diagnostic investigations while women who test negative are safely reassured without the need for unpleasant, invasive, anxiety-provoking and expensive procedures," the study says.

The new tool was first tested on 103 women with known cancer and 113 with unexplained postmenopausal bleeding and could be brought into clinical practice once expanded trials have concluded.

Researchers from the University of Texas' MD Anderson Cancer Center recently came up with a way to better predict the survival rates of patients with gastric cancer.

According to the findings which were published in Nature Medicine, scientists were able to develop and validate a gene expression signature which was able to better predict survival rates of patients with gastric cancer.

In "peritoneal carcinomatosis", cancer cells breach and attack the abdominal cavity, which is around the stomach and other organs. Most common among patients with advanced gastric cancers, it can also appear with any kind of gastrointestinal cancers.

Among people with advanced cancers, it appears in at least 45 per cent of the patients.

As part of this condition, fluid accumulation takes place in the abdominal cavity, and the patients with the condition live for less than six months.

During the process of this study, researchers took up cells from patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis and isolated them. Out of the participants of the study, ten were long-term survivors of the disease, and had survived over a year after a diagnosis. An additional 10 patients were short-term survivors who lived for less than six months after being diagnosed.

To better understand the route of gastric cancer and to treat tumour cells, researchers created a "map" of cells which carried the disease, and focused on the type of cells found in one patient, and how the cells were performing.

If different kinds of cells are present in a tumour, it is called "intratumour heterogeneity", and can cause failures of treatment. In addition, it could cause many cancer cells to reappear, which then respond differently to the therapy which was already stipulated for the treatment.

In the process of creation of this "map", researchers traced the origins of PC cells. This technique is called tumour cell lineage. They soon found that even though all cells under the radar carried cancer, some of them originated from the stomach, while many others seemed to originate from the intestine, ANI reported.

The scientists successfully created a gene signature which was able to predict survival rates much better than other ways available.

A doctor is being dubbed as a saviour after he voided over $650,000 in unpaid medical bills for his patients. Dr Omar T Atiq from Arkansas ran the Arkansas Cancer Clinic which served the Pine Bluff community up to 2020, after which he decided to shut it down.

To this end, he hired a company to take care of outstanding payments from patients. At this moment, he realised the true cost of healthcare in the US and how COVID-19 has rendered more people unable to pay for their treatment.

The doctor told CNN that he was ''grateful'' for the opportunity to help others out. When he rummaged through the bills of his patients, he found that people were paying anything between $5-$50 for months, as he told CBS News. "Patients wanted to pay, but they didn't have the ability to pay'', he said.

He referred to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and said many people have lost their means of livelihood owing to the pandemic, which still has the highest toll in the United States.

This marked the second such debt cancellation on the doctor's part, who had earlier cancelled the debt of his patients in June 2020.

Speaking to CNN, the doctor added how this is not just a story of debt cancellation but is a reflection on medical debt, and how people seeking medical help are going ''bankrupt''.

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) is set to pilot a simple blood test that may detect more than 50 types of cancer.

The Galleri blood test has been developed by Californian healthcare company Grail.

NHS England hopes the blood test will be particularly useful in identifying types of cancer that are currently difficult to diagnose and treat early.

According to the news release, the pilot programme, due to start in mid-2021, will involve 165,000 people, including 140,000 aged from 50 to 79 who have no symptoms but will have annual blood tests over three years.

The remaining 25,000 participants will be people with possible cancer symptoms who will be offered the blood test to speed up their diagnosis after they are referred to hospital in the normal way.

Results are expected by 2023, after which it is hoped one million people could receive the test by 2025.

We all love to get our coffee or tea as takeaways and have it while travelling or working, and the 'to-go' paper cups with plastic lids have made our lives easier. However, these cups may be the doom of our health, some scientists have discovered.

According to a recently conducted study, when we pour hot tea or coffee in a paper or a plastic cup, the tiny plastic particles on the inside surface of the cup get dissolved with the drink, making it highly contaminated and harmful for one's health.

The following is a roundup of some of the latest scientific studies on the novel coronavirus and efforts to find treatments and vaccines for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus.

COVID-19 increases risks for cancer patients

Cancer patients face poorer outcomes if they become infected with the new coronavirus, a new study shows. However, undergoing recent cancer treatments did not make COVID-19 outcomes worse, so cancer therapies should not be delayed, the research team advises in a report published on Friday in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The study involved nearly 23,000 patients with cancer who were tested for COVID-19 at U.S. Veterans Affairs health facilities nationwide. Roughly 1,800 (7.8%) had tested positive, with no effect of age on the likelihood of infection. COVID-19 rates were higher in patients with blood cancers (11%) than in those with solid tumors (8%). Compared to patients who tested negative for the virus, COVID-19 patients had more hospitalizations, needed more intensive care, and needed more help with breathing. Death rates were 14% among cancer patients with COVID-19 and 3% in those without the virus. Across the country, African-American and Hispanic cancer patients had higher rates of COVID-19 infection than white cancer patients - 15%, 11% and 6%, respectively. They also had higher rates of hospitalization. The real prevalence of COVID-19 among cancer patients remains uncertain, the researchers point out, because many have not been tested for the virus.

Common cold antibodies do not protect against COVID-19

Your immune system may be able to produce antibodies that recognize and fight off the coronaviruses that cause common colds, but those antibodies are not likely to protect against the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, new research shows. At Rockefeller University in New York City, scientists studied blood samples collected and stored before the pandemic from people known to have had common colds in the past few months. In test tube experiments, they found that each sample contained antibodies that could recognize and neutralize, or disable, at least one common cold coronavirus - and most could recognize multiple such viruses. But none of the samples had antibodies that could recognize and disable a virus that had been modified to look like the new coronavirus, carrying the spike protein that helps it infect healthy cells. In a report published ahead of peer review on Sunday on medRxiv, the researchers say that while there may be rare individuals with common cold antibodies that can also target the COVID-19 virus, their new data suggest those antibodies are not going to have much of an effect for the population as a whole.

COVID-19 neurological effects may reflect immune response

The new coronavirus might not be having major direct effects on the brain despite neurological issues that have been widely reported. Researchers examined brains of 43 COVID-19 patients who died in intensive care units, nursing homes, regular hospital wards, or at home. They found coronavirus proteins in the brain stem, but "little involvement" of the frontal lobe - the part of the brain important for movement, language and higher level functioning. They also saw increases in brain cells called astrocytes, signaling destruction of other nearby cells. Because critical illness itself can contribute to this finding, it is not clear that COVID-19 is the direct cause. The presence of the virus was not associated with the severity of brain tissue changes, researchers said. All of the brains showed signs of "neuroimmune activation," meaning the immune system had been activated to respond to the infection in the brain. Patients' neurological symptoms might be due to the body's immune response, rather than to direct central nervous system damage from the virus, the authors reported in The Lancet Neurology. "We have started to define the immune reaction to SARS-CoV-2 virus in the brain," coauthor Markus Glatzel of University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in German told Reuters. "We think that the neuroimmune reaction may be a factor explaining some of the neurological symptoms seen in COVID-19 patients."

A widely-used diabetes drug has been recalled after manufacturers found it contained unacceptably high levels of a carcinogen -- a cancer-causing contaminant.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Indian pharmaceutical company Marksans Pharma Limited has recalled metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets because their levels of NDMA were higher than the acceptable daily intake limit.

NDMA is a "probable human carcinogen", whose acceptable daily intake limit is 96 nanograms per day.

Metformin tablets are used to treat type 2 diabetes and are designed to lower glucose levels. The recall applies to metformin tablets between 500 mg and 750 mg.

The FDA is still investigating where NDMA comes from and how it ends up in metformin products.

Marksans Pharma Limited, India, has yet not revealed how much NDMA its recalled products contained.

Timothy Ray Brown, the first person to be successfully cured of HIV has died due to cancer, the International Aids society announced on Wednesday.

Famously known as the “Berlin Patient”, Brown had made history when he was cured of HIV more than ten years ago.

Before his demise, Brown had seen recurrent instances of leukaemia over a few months. He also received care in Palm Springs, California.

"On behalf of all its members... the IAS sends its condolences to Timothy’s partner, Tim, and his family and friends," IAS President Adeeba Kamarulzaman announced.

"We owe Timothy and his doctor, Gero Hutter, a great deal of gratitude for opening the door for scientists to explore the concept that a cure for HIV is possible”, IAS president added.

In 1995, Brown was diagnosed with HIV when he was a student in Berlin. Ten years later, he was diagnosed with leukaemia, a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and the blood.

At the Free University of Berlin, his doctor used a stem call transplant which came from a donor who had a rare genetic mutation, which somehow gave him a natural resistance to HIV.

Marijuana is called the magic plant by many, and it might be for good reason after all! The plant, which has been effectively used to limit the ill effects of many ailments including anxiety and paranoia was also used to limit chronic pain among patients.

The plant’s anti-cancer properties have been noted by scientists over the last decade. However, the stigma surrounding the plant and its classification as a narcotic in many countries has largely kept the research limited.

Regardless, its effectiveness on treating many forms of cancers has been long recorded.

Recently, researchers found that the cannabis attacked cancer cells in patients, and could eventually cure the disease.

Killing cancer cells with cannabis

Undertaken at the University of Newcastle in Australia, cancer researcher Matt Dun spent three years studying various strains of cannabis and how they affect cancer cells. He found that a certain strain of the plant was able to destroy cancer cells, while also not harming the body’s own cells.

The press release from the university claimed that that “medicinal cannabis can kill or inhibit cancer cells without impacting normal cells, revealing its potential as a treatment rather than simply a relief medication”. Cannabis has for long been used to relieve pain among cancer patients, and remains harmless, as opposed to chemotherapy which has a lot of side effects. Cannabinoids (CBD) are known for pain relief.

The strain has been named “Eve” contained less than 1 per cent of THC than was expected, implying it does not get one “high”. At the same, it possessed high levels of CBDs which are known to provide relief.

"Eve"

The researchers attempted to kill leukaemia cells and realised that they were easily destroyed by cannabis’ chemical compounds, while remaining harmless to white blood cells in the body, which are important. They further intend to develop the strain “Eve” to ascertain its usefulness in killing cancer cells.

Now, the scientists intend to expand their testing on other types of cancer kills. The biggest roadblock in all cannabis-related studies is its classification as a “drug” in many countries. The US, for instance continues to categorise it in the same box as heroin. However, cannabis is naturally occurring and is harmless when consumed through other means than smoking. Even when smoking, it’s the smoke that is the concern, not the cannabis itself.

Many researchers had earlier found how cannabis killed symptoms of cancer, but this a first in terms of completely killing off cancerous cells.

Additionally, treatments with low-THC or “high inducing” concentrations have little to no risk when compared to contemporary forms of treatment which also cause immense side effects.

When scientists first unearthed fossils of a horned dinosaur called Centrosaurus in the badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park in Canada’s Alberta province in 1989, they spotted a badly malformed leg bone they figured was a healed fracture.

A fresh examination, researchers said on Monday, shows something different. The malformation was a manifestation of osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer, making this Centrosaurus, which lived 76 million years ago, the first known example of a dinosaur afflicted by malignant cancer.

Also read: Star Wars inspires scientists to create sense-capable artificial skin

About 20 feet (6 meters) long, Centrosaurus was a four-legged beaked plant-eating Cretaceous Period dinosaur possessing a long horn above its nose and a bony frill above its neck with two smaller hooked horns.

The Centrosaurus fibula, a lower leg bone, contained “a massive gnarly tumor larger than an apple,” said paleontologist David Evans of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, one of the researchers in the study published in the journal Lancet Oncology.

“This particular Centrosaurus was likely weak and lamed by the cancer prior to its death. This remarkable find shows that no matter how big or powerful some dinosaurs may seem, they were affected by many of the same diseases we see in humans and other animals today, including cancer. Dinosaurs seem like mythical beasts, but they were living, breathing animals that suffered through horrible injuries and diseases,” he added.

Because most tumors occur in soft tissue that does not readily fossilize, there is scant evidence of cancer in the fossil record.

“This finding speaks to the biology of cancer. It is not something novel or new, but probably has occurred since time immemorial and is an expected complication in all animals,” said study co-author Dr. Mark Crowther, a professor of medicine, pathology and molecular medicine at McMaster University in Ontario.

“Osteosarcoma generally occurs in rapidly growing bones and as such is found in children and young adults. Presumably dinosaurs were also at risk because of the fact that they grew at enormous rates,” Crowther added.

The tumor destroys the bone and can spread to other tissues, Crowther said. In people, treatment consists of chemotherapy and surgery that sometimes involves amputation.

The researchers confirmed it was a tumor using high-resolution CT scans and by looking at thin sections of it under the microscope. “We were not only able to demonstrate that the bone tissue showed the hallmarks of osteosarcoma, but that the tumor spiraled through the cortex of bone, discounting its original identification of a healed fracture,” Evans said.

Cancer, however, may not have killed the Centrosaurus. Its body was found in a vast bonebed containing the remains of hundreds of Centrosaurus individuals, suggesting they died as part of a herd caught in a flood, Evans said.

Its cancer may have reduced its mobility to make it an inviting target for big predators like Gorgosaurus and Daspletosaurus. But living within a large herd, Evans said, may have provided safety in numbers that enabled the Centrosaurus to avoid predation as the cancer progressed.

'Gnarly' tumor shows dinosaurs got cancer, too

One of the deadliest diseases in the world - cancer may be now detectable up to four years before someone shows symptoms, a new study says.

The blood test, called PanSeer can detect cancer in 95 per cent people who show no symptoms but inevitably develop the disease.

The research is not a predictive test, but rather simply picks up signs of cancer in the body before they become pervasive enough to cause apparent changes in the body, which is mostly when people get diagnosed with the disease. This early detection can prevent many deaths and complications by taking early steps to bring it under control.

The researchers who contributed belong to various schools of Fudan University - State Key Laboratory of Genetic Engineering and Collaborative Innovation Center for Genetics and Development, Taizhou Institute of Health Sciences, and the Human Phenome Institute.

"Non-invasive"

The study was published in the journal Nature Communications and the test it has developed is a “DNA methylation-based” non-invasive blood test.

Even though earlier studies have claimed to have achieved the same, this particular test is peculiar for it diagnoses the cancer even before its symptoms become apparent in patients.

The researchers looked for methyl groups in the DNA, which are one of the significant signs of tumour. They then picked up small strands of DNA to ascertain the presence of cancer.

Employing technology based on artificial intelligence, they developed a system to determine whether any DNA came from tumours.

"Non-invasive" The study was published in the journal Nature Communications and the test it has developed is a “DNA methylation-based” non-invasive blood test. Even though earlier studies have claimed to have achieved the same, this particular test is peculiar for it diagnoses the cancer even before its symptoms become apparent in patients. Also read: Johnson & Johnson told to pay $2.1 billion over cancer-causing talc powder The researchers looked for methyl groups in the DNA, which are one of the significant signs of tumour. They then picked up small strands of DNA to ascertain the presence of cancer. According to the report, there are around 1.16 million new cancer cases and nearly 8 lakh cancer deaths every year in India.

The country also has 2.26 million cases of the disease which are five years old. In India, 7,84,800 cancer patients died in 2018.

The country's cancer burden will continue to increase as a result of the continuing epidemiological transition and the maximum increment will occur in the most populous and least developed states, where the current cancer treatment facilities are grossly inadequate, the report stated.

Reportedly, the average age for breast cancer in India is almost a decade lower than that in the West. More Indian women die from cervical cancer than any country in the world and cancer now kills more than double the Indians it did in 1990.

Two latest studies point at the fact that rapid deployment of cervical cancer vaccines can avoid over 70 million cases and nearly 62 million deaths due to cervical cancer in the next 100 years to come.

As per the report published in 'The Lancet', it was found that vaccination of cervical cancer in girls coupled with cervical cancer screening in women was projected to bring down the incident of cervical cancer by over 90 per cent.

It was estimated that a major chunk of new cervical cancer across the globe could be attributed to low and lower-middle-income nations.

Also read: Newly discovered immune cell could help kill all types of cancers

"Approximately 570 000 cases of cervical cancer and 311 000 deaths from the disease occurred in 2018. Cervical cancer was the fourth most common cancer in women, ranking after breast cancer (2·1 million cases), colorectal cancer (0·8 million) and lung cancer (0·7 million)," notes a Lancet report which was published last year.

The report also stated that China and India together "contributed more than a third of the global cervical burden, with 106 000 cases in China and 97 000 cases in India, and 48 000 deaths in China and 60 000 deaths in India".

Lack of awareness and easy availability of vaccines and invasive treatment add more to the burden of rising cancer cases and related mortality.

"US$1.16 trillion is the estimated total annual economic cost of cancer in 2010," estimates WHO.

An estimated 8.8 million died of the disease in 2015 and the number of cases is only rising by the day.

While nothing guarantees cancer prevention, dietary tweaks and changes in lifestyle can go a long way in minimising the risks.

A group of researchers have found that our lungs have a magical capability to repair some of the damages caused by smoking if a person quits the habit.

As per the study published in the journal Nature, lungs cells that escape the damage can help repair other damaged cells in the organ.

Interestingly, the results were positive in people who smoked earlier but had quit. The study indicated positive results even in people who used to smoke a complete pack of cigarettes earlier before calling it quits.

The study's joint senior author, Peter Campbell of the Wellcome Sanger Institute, said the results should give new hope to smokers who want to quit.

During their study, the scientists came across new T-cells in the blood of people.

These cells are a type of White Blood Cell (WBC).

It is this cell that analyzes the presence of threats that need to be eliminated.

This particular cell destroys the tumour and can target and exterminate all types of cancer.

Before this discovery, doctors have been using a treatment called CAR-T therapy in which T-cells were extracted from the patient's own body and reinjected in it.

It hunted and killed the cells which caused cancer.

But its limitation was that it only targetted a restricted number of cancers and had not been successful in case of solid tumours.

It could not delineate between healthy tissue and tumour cells due to their similar genetic structure and thus, attacked them both.

But the newly discovered T-cell will be able to differentiate between the two.

The research has ''great potential'' according to Lucia Mori and Gennario De Libero, professors of immunology at the University of Basel in Switzerland.

Newly discovered immune cell could help kill all types of cancers: Study

A Google artificial intelligence system proved as good as expert radiologists at detecting which women had breast cancer based on screening mammograms and showed promise at reducing errors, researchers in the United States and Britain reported.

The study, published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, is the latest to show that artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve the accuracy of screening for breast cancer, which affects one in eight women globally.

Radiologists miss about 20% of breast cancers in mammograms, the American Cancer Society says, and half of all women who get the screenings over a 10-year period have a false-positive result.

The findings of the study, developed with Alphabet Inc's DeepMind AI unit, which merged with Google Health in September, represent a major advance in the potential for the early detection of breast cancer, Mozziyar Etemadi, one of its co-authors from Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, said.

The team, which included researchers at Imperial College London and Britain's National Health Service, trained the system to identify breast cancers on tens of thousands of mammograms.

They then compared the system's performance with the actual results from a set of 25,856 mammograms in the United Kingdom and 3,097 from the United States.

The study showed the AI system could identify cancers with a similar degree of accuracy to expert radiologists, while reducing the number of false positive results by 5.7 per cent in the US-based group and by 1.2 per cent in the British-based group.

It also cut the number of false negatives, where tests are wrongly classified as normal, by 9.4 per cent in the US group, and by 2.7% in the British group.

These differences reflect the ways in which mammograms are read. In the United States, only one radiologist reads the results and the tests are done every one to two years. In Britain, the tests are done every three years, and each is read by two radiologists. When they disagree, a third is consulted.

'Subtle cues'

In a separate test, the group pitted the AI system against six radiologists and found it outperformed them at accurately detecting breast cancers.

Connie Lehman, chief of the breast imaging department at Harvard's Massachusetts General Hospital, said the results are in line with findings from several groups using AI to improve cancer detection in mammograms, including her own work.

The notion of using computers to improve cancer diagnostics is decades old, and computer-aided detection (CAD) systems are commonplace in mammography clinics, yet CAD programs have not improved performance in clinical practice.

The issue, Lehman said, is that current CAD programs were trained to identify things human radiologists can see, whereas with AI, computers learn to spot cancers based on the actual results of thousands of mammograms.

This has the potential to "exceed human capacity to identify subtle cues that the human eye and brain aren't able to perceive," Lehman added.

Although computers have not been "super helpful" so far, "what we've shown at least in tens of thousands of mammograms is the tool can actually make a very well-informed decision," Etemadi said.

The study has some limitations. Most of the tests were done using the same type of imaging equipment, and the US group contained a lot of patients with confirmed breast cancers.

Crucially, the team has yet to show the tool improves patient care, said Dr Lisa Watanabe, chief medical officer of CureMetrix, whose AI mammogram program won US approval last year.

"AI software is only helpful if it actually moves the dial for the radiologist," she said.

Etemadi agreed that those studies are needed, as is regulatory approval, a process that could take several years.

A Google artificial intelligence system proved as good as expert radiologists at detecting which women had breast cancer based on screening mammograms and showed promise at reducing errors, researchers in the United States and Britain reported.

National Cancer Awareness Day: Helping cancer patients fight stigma

US endurance swimmer Sarah Thomas has become the first person to swim across the English Channel four times without stopping, refuelling only on a liquid formula during her 54-hour feat.

The 37-year-old woman from Colorado performed her record-breaking swim a year after receiving treatment for breast cancer, and dedicated her achievement to fellow cancer survivors.

She came ashore on a beach near Dover, on the south coast of England, on Tuesday morning, exhausted and with a sore throat from all the saltwater.

"I was throwing up, I was sick," she said, huddled in a towel.

"I was really just pretty numb," she told the BBC soon afterwards in a croaky voice.

"There were a lot of people on the beach to meet me and wish me well. That was really nice of them, but I feel just mostly stunned right now, I just can't believe we did it."

In theory, the route that Thomas swam should have been 80 miles (130 km) long, but due to strong currents in the Channel she in fact swam 130 miles (210 km). She said she saw lots of fish and jellyfish along the way.

Previously, four swimmers had crossed the water between England and France three times without stopping.

Thomas consumed only a liquid diet during her swim. Her support crew, following her in a boat, would throw her a bottle containing a mix of carbohydrates, electrolytes and some caffeine, with a little apple juice to improve the flavour.

"That's what I ate most of the way," she said.

Upon arrival, she tried to celebrate with champagne but found it did not go down well. She did manage to eat some M&M chocolates.

"Hopefully I can sleep the rest of the day. I'm pretty out of it and pretty tired right now, for sure," she said.
