Recently, at least a dozen countries have imposed restrictions on travellers from China because of an uptick in the number of cases in the country. The growing list now includes Australia and Canada which require a negative test result for all passengers from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.

The truckers' "Freedom Convoy 2.0" demonstration scheduled to take place in Ottawa next month, a year after the city was brought to a grinding halt, has been called off.

The truckers' "Freedom Convoy 2.0" demonstration scheduled to take place in Ottawa next month, a year after the city was brought to a grinding halt, has been called off. James Bauder, the founder of a group called Canada Unity which oversaw the organising of the protests last year, said the repeat event was cancelled because he could not "guarantee public safety" and that going ahead with the protests could have invited severe sanctions. Bauder cited "several security breaches and personal character attacks" on himself as another reason for backing out of the event, according to an AFP report. In December, Bauder said he would bring a four-day event back to Ottawa on the first anniversary of the 2022 demonstration and that all the big rigs would make daily trips to Parliament Hill. However, after the authorities suggested that they would take a 'zero-tolerance' approach toward such a protest, Bauder said he would take the convoy to Winnipeg instead. In a Facebook post, Bauder, however, hinted at staging a comeback in 2024 after a year of 'solid' planning. "If the plan goes well, in Feb 2024. (will take a solid year to plan properly) I will be in Toronto with Team Canada Unity attending as a guest at a Sacred Ceremony event that could be viewed as Biblical... (No peeking) First, let's get to the Truth." WATCH | Canada's freedom convoy sparks inspiration in Europe: Protestors will drive to Brussels, Paris × What was Freedom Convoy? The protest initially started as a rally against the vaccine requirement for cross-border truckers. However, soon, the truckers changed their tune and the rally became a demonstration against the Canadian government's overreach during the pandemic as protesters took an anti-vaccination stance. While the protests largely remained non-violent, Trudeau, not used to facing resistance in his backyard, invoked the Emergencies Act and became the first Canadian PM to do so. Testifying in front of an independent public commission in November last year, Trudeau defended the decision to use 'emergency powers'. "It wasn’t that they just wanted to be heard. They wanted to be obeyed. I am absolutely, absolutely serene and confident that I made the right choice in agreeing with the invocation," said Trudeau. As per AFP, the measure is temporary and will be in place for two years. About a year back when soaring housing prices were putting house ownership beyond the reach of many Canadians, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had proposed this measure as part of his 2021 electoral campaign.

Following a win, Trudeau's Liberal party introduced the Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act.

Foreign buyers according to the national statistical agency account for less than five per cent of homeowners in Canada. Hence many experts as per AFP have said that a ban on them would not make housing more affordable, rather they say more housing construction is needed to meet the demand.

Trudeau keeps election promise, Canada imposes two year ban on foreign home buyers

In an effort to provide additional housing options for locals experiencing a housing shortage, a prohibition on foreigners purchasing residential property in Canada went into effect on Sunday.

Why has Canada imposed a two-year ban on foreign home buyers?

Canada is one of the top destinations for millions of people throughout the world who are looking to relocate. However, some people who are considering moving there may need to reschedule their plans. As per a new law, many foreigners are prohibited from purchasing residential property in the North American country for two years.

Why the new regulation?

A new regulation that prohibits the majority of foreign homebuyers from purchasing houses for investment purposes for two years took effect in Canada on 1 January 2023. This was done to enable those who live in the country to afford homes.

However, there are a number of exceptions to the Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by the Non-Canadians Act. It enables non-Canadian citizens who are immigrants or permanent residents to buy property. Students and migrants are also not covered by it.

As reported by The New York Times, the ban does not cover vacation houses in "recreational zones" and only to "census metropolitan areas" and "census agglomerations," which are essentially cities that fulfill specific demographic requirements. Many politicians in Canada think that foreign investors who bought real estate as investments are to blame for this. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the housing problem a campaign issue and pledged to bring this problem under control in the election of 2021.

“The desirability of Canadian homes is attracting profiteers, wealthy corporations, and foreign investors,” said the campaign website of Trudeau’s Liberal Party of Canada, according to a report on CNN. “This is leading to a real problem of underused and vacant housing, rampant speculation, and skyrocketing prices. The researchers aerially surveyed the Bay and its nearby town of Churchill also referred to as the 'Bear capital of the World' in 2021 and found there were 618 bears only, compared to 842, five years ago when last counted. The survey added that a significant decline has been noted in the population of adult female bears and cubs between 2011 and 2021. "The observed declines are consistent with long-standing predictions regarding the demographic effects of climate change on polar bears," said the researchers. The fall in the number of bears in the region has been ongoing for decades. Since the 1980s the polar bear population has decreased by nearly 50 per cent which stood around 1,200 at the time. Toronto stabbing: Eight teenage girls charged with murder

The man who opened fire and killed five people at a suburban Toronto condominium building was identified as 73-year-old Francesco Villi.

According to reports, Villi targeted the people who were members of his condo board. He is said to have a longstanding dispute with them.

On Sunday, the gunman went several floors and launched a violent rampage against the board members whom he felt had wronged him by filing lawsuits against him.

Toronto Star newspaper, citing court documents, reported that the condo board members earlier filed a restraining order against Villi over his “allegedly threatening, abusive, intimidating and harassing behaviour.”

Villi had also filed a lawsuit against six directors and officers of the board in 2020, alleging that the board members "committed acts of crime and criminality from 2010 onwards."

Among the deceased were three men and two women, of which three of the victims were members of the condo board. Another woman was injured and remains hospitalised.

Villi was later killed during a confrontation with the police at the hallway of the building in Vaughan, Ontario.

The police had described the murder sit as a “horrendous scene where numerous victims were deceased.”

Police have not yet disclosed the possible motive for the attack or released the names or ages of the victims.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit spokesperson Kristy Denette said that the attacker carried a semiautomatic handgun and that investigators don't believe he exchanged fire with the officer who killed him.

Police said that there was no further threat to the community and was hoping to get residents back into the building.

Toronto Star newspaper, citing court documents, reported that the condo board members earlier filed a restraining order against Villi over his “allegedly threatening, abusive, intimidating and harassing behaviour.” Villi had also filed a lawsuit against six directors and officers of the board in 2020, alleging that the board members "committed acts of crime and criminality from 2010 onwards." Among the deceased were three men and two women, of which three of the victims were members of the condo board. Another woman was injured and remains hospitalised. Villi was later killed during a confrontation with the police at the hallway of the building in Vaughan, Ontario. The police had described the murder sit as a “horrendous scene where numerous victims were deceased.” Police have not yet disclosed the possible motive for the attack or released the names or ages of the victims. Ontario's Special Investigations Unit spokesperson Kristy Denette said that the attacker carried a semiautomatic handgun and that investigators don't believe he exchanged fire with the officer who killed him. Police said that there was no further threat to the community and was hoping to get residents back into the building. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Facing backlash from several quarters, the Canadian government has decided to delay expanding euthanasia or medically assisted death facility to people with mental illness.

Facing backlash from several quarters, the Canadian government has decided to delay expanding euthanasia or medically assisted death facility to people with mental illness. Canada's Justice Minister David Lametti last week acknowledged that the government was listening and that more time was required to get the proposal right. “We are listening to what we are hearing and being responsive, to make sure we move forward in a prudent way. We know we need to get this right in order to protect those who are vulnerable and also to support an individual’s autonomy and freedom of choice." Earlier, the government had kept plans to broaden euthanasia under the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) legislation, starting mid-March next year. Read more: Countries where euthanasia, assisted suicide is legal The critics of the law argue that the Canadian healthcare system is not prepared enough to handle complicated mental illness cases. Expediting the facility to all could have had far-reaching and in some cases, devastating consequences. A petition filed by the Society of Canadian Psychiatry, a national voluntary professional association with 4,700 psychiatrists on the roster has urged the government to delay the expansion of MAiD until 2024. WATCH | Gravitas: Can a person end their own life to escape pain? × Meanwhile, the supporters have called the 'delay', a discriminatory step for mentally challenged individuals and that it promotes stigmatisation. The law, which first came into being in 2016 only allowed patients with terminal illness to have the access to the procedure. However, after criticism and court cases, in 2019, a Quebec judge ordered that the law, deemed unconstitutional at the time also allow adults who didn't have a reasonably foreseeable death to have the opportunity to avail the procedure. Read more: Experts raise alarm as Canada expands euthanasia to cover those with mental illnesses As a result, 'Bill C-7' was passed in March last year which reflected the judge's concerns. However, the legislators imposed a two-year ban on patients with mental illness receiving assisted death. A study was ordered to understand the complex situation which will end in March next year. Amid the United Nations biodiversity summit, COP 15, negotiators said they have reached a historic deal, on Monday. The draft calls for raising billions of dollars by 2030 to protect land and marine areas as well as save biodiversity in the developing world. The conference that took place in Montreal, Canada was seen as the “last chance” to address the issue.

In line with this deal, at least 190 countries have committed to placing 30 per cent of land and water under protection by 2030, which is significant for biodiversity. Additionally, the draft also calls for raising $200 billion by the end of the decade for a range of sources and work on phasing out or reforming subsidies which could provide another $500 billion for nature.

Notably, as of now, 17 per cent of land and 10 per cent of oceans are protected. “There has never been a conservation goal globally at this scale…This puts us within a chance of safeguarding biodiversity from collapse,” said the director, Brian O’Donnell, of a conservation group called Campaign for Nature, to the press.

The draft of the agreement was released, on Sunday, by China which holds the presidency at this conference but the venue had to be moved to Canada due to Beijing’s Covid-related restrictions. It was approved on early Monday, by ministers and government officials representing about 190 countries who agreed that saving biodiversity is a priority.

Furthermore, the framework also calls for increasing the amount of money sent to poor countries to at least $20 billion every year by 2025 which could be increased by $10 billion each year by the end of the decade. However, the document only calls for identifying subsidies by 2025 which can be reformed or phased out and work on reducing them by 2030.

The draft comprised four broad goals and 22 targets addressing the protection of nature and sharing its benefits which included, the management of wildlife, working on the restoration of habitats and using less plastic.

The deal also accounts for the rights of Indigenous peoples and reaffirmed that they will have a voice in decision-making, a move which has been praised by many. This comes after nearly two weeks of negotiating with finance reportedly being one of the most contentious issues. Sanraj Singh: 24-year-old Indian-origin Sikh man shot dead in Canada

Canada's children as young as 12-year-old kids might be able to apply for Euthanasia very soon. The law will allow mentally ill people to apply for euthanasia.

Canada seeks to liberalise Euthanasia laws, to allow 'mentally ill' people to die

Starting mid-march, Canada will allow medical euthanasia for people plagued with mental disorders under the country's Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) legislation. From March 17, the law in Canada expands to include those suffering from medical illnesses. Currently, as per VOA, the law only applies to people whose death is deemed "reasonable foreseeable death" or those who suffer from a debilitating illness.

The proposed expansion of MAiD has garnered mixed reactions. While patients who had previously faced rejections of their assisted suicide requests and who now find the path to a "release" easier are all in favour of the new law. However, others including experts are in vehement opposition.

CTV News reports that the Association of Chairs of Psychiatry in Canada, which includes the directors of the departments of psychiatry at all 17 medical schools, has requested that the modification to the MAiD law be postponed.

In a statement released on Thursday, the association notes that significant, unsolved concerns include the lack of public education on suicide prevention and a clear definition of irremediability or the point at which recovery is impossible.

Dr Valerie Taylor, who heads the group, said that while a lot of work is being done in Canada, "further time is required to increase awareness of this change and establish guidelines and standards to which clinicians, patients and the public can turn to for more education and information."

The University of Manitoba's director of the psychiatry department, Dr Jitender Sareen, said , that if a patient wants MAiD solely for mental health conditions, "we don't have the clear standards around definitions of who's eligible. How many assessments and what kinds of assessment would they actually need?"

Victoria-based lawyer Chris Considine has been at the forefront of advocating for euthanasia, and supports cases that include terminal illnesses like cancer or ALS but says that mental health cases are not clear-cut.

As per him, while mental health issues have grown their treatment hasn't.

“In addition, there are underlying causes for mental health which are not strictly organic," VOA quotes Considine as saying.

He adds that mental health problems can stem from many reasons, "there may be depression caused by poor housing, poor job prospects and other issues, which will drive people into a deep depression. Those issues could be solved, and therefore, there may not really be a need for MAiD."

In his opinion, the March date needs to be pushed back or at least strict guidelines need to be put in place so MAiD "does not become a substitute for housing, health care and other forms of social assistance".
