India fired back at allegations of interfering in Canada's elections, calling out a recent Canadian report for its "baseless" claims.
In a strong-worded statement, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected the report, stating that it was actually Canada that had been meddling in India's internal affairs.
"We have seen a report about alleged activities on purported interference. It is in fact Canada which has been consistently interfering in India's internal affairs," the statement read.
"This has also created an environment for illegal migration and organized criminal activities. We reject the report's insinuations on India and expect that the support system enabling illegal migration will not be further countenanced," it added.

What did the report say?

A recent report from the Canadian Commission alleged that after China, India was actively interfering in Canada's electoral process.
"India is the second most active country engaging in electoral foreign interference in Canada. Like the PRC, India is a critical actor on the world stage. Canada and India have worked together for decades, but there are challenges in the relationship. Many of these are long-standing and inform India's foreign interference activities," the report said.
A 123-page report highlighted the expulsion of six Indian diplomats in October 2024, labelling them as "agents."
The report referred to the October 14, 2024, incident when Canada expelled sex diplomats after its police, in response to the evidence gathered, suggested that they were involved in an Indian government-backed "campaign of violence".
India retaliated by expelling six Canadian diplomats, including Acting High Commissioner Stewart Wheeler, and withdrawing its own High Commissioner and other diplomats from Canada, citing security concerns.
"In October 2024, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats and consular officials in reaction to a targeted campaign against Canadian citizens by agents linked to the Government of India," the report alleged.
The report also accused New Delhi of spreading disinformation surrounding the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The report, however, contradicted itself as it stated that Canada could not find a link to a foreign state in Nijjar's killing.
"Disinformation is also used as a retaliatory tactic, to punish decisions that run contrary to a state's interests. This may have been the case with a disinformation campaign that followed the Prime Minister's announcement regarding suspected Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar (though again no definitive link to a foreign state could be proven)," the report said.

The Canadian PM’s comments came hours after the new US president announced that he was planning to impose 25 per cent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. Trump added that these plans may be effective from February 1.
“We’re thinking in terms of 25 per cent on Mexico and Canada, because they're allowing vast numbers of people – Canada's a very bad abuser also – vast numbers of people to come in, and fentanyl to come in. I think we'll do it on February 1,” the US president told reporters in the Oval Office after his inauguration on Monday (Jan 20).

While Canada’s priority is to prevent any tariffs altogether and build a “very positive relationship with the US,” the country will not allow it to be rolled over by Trump’s threats, Trudeau said.
On Trump’s remarks that the US does not need anything from Canada, Trudeau said that if the new president really wants to usher in a “golden age of America” as he said in his inaugural speech, he will need critical natural resources from Canada. This gives Canada some leverage, according to Trudeau.
Amid the threats, Trudeau said that Ottawa is prepared to enact severe measures, including a possible oil export ban, if other efforts don’t work.

"We're thinking in terms of 25 per cent on Mexico and Canada because they're allowing vast numbers of people -- Canada's a very bad abuser also -- vast numbers of people to come in, and fentanyl to come in," he said in the Oval Office as he signed an array of executive orders.
Trump reignited his tariff threats against Canada and Mexico, two major US trading partners, just hours after taking office. He accused them of failing to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the US.
Earlier on Monday, Trump vowed to "immediately begin the overhaul" of the US trade system "to protect American workers and families."
"Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens," Trump said in his inaugural address.
As President-elect, Trump, during several instances, had threatened tariff hikes on Canadian and Mexican imports, along with an additional 10 per cent hike on Chinese goods, if these countries did not take tough measures to curb the illegal migration and flow of fentanyl into the United States.
Mexico, Canada and China are leading sources of goods imported by the US, as per official trade data.
On being asked about across-the-board tariffs, Trump said he might enact them, but added, "We're not ready for that yet."

The next Canadian federal election was originally scheduled for October 2025. However, with Trudeau's resignation, the elections will be held sometime in March. Digital asset firms in Canada are quickly putting what they've learnt from the crypto industry's high-profile triumphs in the US Elections last year into practice. Crypto trends in Canada In November last year, pro-crypto US Politicians were victorious in most contests. A former sceptic of cryptocurrency, Donald Trump, won the presidential race. The price of bitcoin surged by almost 40 per cent, breaking the 100,000-dollar mark, and Trump appointed proponents of digital assets to his new government. Cryptos were a hot topic, with digital asset businesses spending almost $135 million supporting politicians in the US Election. Advocacy organisation stand with crypto also helped make the topic a prominent US election issue. North of the border, crypto hasn't been as big of a topic among politicians, but the industry hopes that will change. The Canadian political system prohibits corporations from contributing to political elections. The maximum amount a person may give to a political party or its candidates is 1,750 Canadian dollars or $1,213 US Dollars. Despite these limitations, the Canadian crypto sector has continued to make strides. Stand with crypto expanded to Canada in July, but the Canadian branch isn't looking to endorse candidates in the upcoming election. Instead, Canada's crypto industry would like to see digital assets become a bigger focus in that election, similar to how it was in the US.

Is Canada's crypto industry taking lessons from the US?

Sunny ways, my friends. Sunny ways! That’s how Justin Trudeau, smiled widely and waved to a crowd of supporters, began his 2015 victory speech! After nearly a decade of headlines, debates, and global attention, Justin has officially announced his resignation as Canada’s prime minister, marking the end of an era. He saw both triumphs and challenges, and his move now gives space for a new chapter in Canada’s leadership while he will stay the caretaker PM until the Liberal Party chooses a new leader.
His career has been anything but ordinary. We know him as a prominent PM redefining Canada’s politics, but his talents extend far beyond the political spectrum.

As the 54-year-old plans to hand over the duties, let’s go back to 2016 before he entered the hallways of politics. He was a school teacher and snowboard instructor. His career took a fun twist when he became an action hero in Marvel’s Civil War II: Choosing Sides.
In the comic, he is depicted as a hero battling evildoers in Canada’s parliament and stepping into a boxing ring. Interestingly, at 44, he appeared on the cover of a comic in a vest with a maple leaf, looking tough and all ready for action!

Who is Anita Anand, Indian-origin leader among contenders for next Canada PM?

In a dramatic turn of events, Justin Trudeau's resignation speech was almost derailed, quite literally.
Videos from the moment have been doing rounds on social media where it can be seen that as Trudeau stepped out of Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, a gust of wind swept away the notes placed on his podium.
Page after page flew off, prompting gasps of "whoa" and "uh-oh" from the crowd.
Trudeau took the unexpected turn in stride, flashing a twisted smile as he jokingly remarked, "I'll wing it."
His reaction drew nervous laughter from the crowd. Unfazed, Trudeau then made an attempt to salvage what was left of his speech, but another sheet slipped away from the podium, carried off by the breeze.
Trudeau neatly folded the remaining pages, tucked them, and smoothly transitioned to a teleprompter for the historic announcement.
The lighthearted moment briefly eased the tension surrounding Trudeau's resignation announcement, which marked the end of his nearly decade-long tenure as Canadian Prime Minister.

Trudeau resigns as Canada Prime Minister

Trudeau stepped down as Canada's Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader on Monday (Jan 6).
He announced his resignation at a press conference, marking an end to nearly a decade in power.
"I intend to resign as party leader, as Prime Minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process," he said.
"This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election," Trudeau added.
"A new Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party will carry its values and ideals into that next election. I'm excited to see the process unfold in the months ahead," he said.
Trudeau announced that the Parliament will be suspended until March 24. He will stay on as PM until a new party leader is chosen.
The decision comes amid Trudeau's falling popularity in recent times, with his government surviving a series of no-confidence votes brought forth by the opposition with a razor-thin margin.
Even members of his own Liberal party have publicly called for his resignation in the past. Justin Trudeau took over as the Liberal Party leader in 2013. Sweeping to power in 2015, he helped the Liberals win in 2019 and 2021.
