This is the second advisory issued by Canada. The first came after the US made it mandatory for all Canadians staying in the US for more than 30 days to register with the US administration. The new rule will be effective from April 11.&nbsp;

"There's been much more heightened security and heightened investigations at the border," she said. "There is just tremendous fear, fear for numerous reasons. First of all, there's fear of getting detained. There's fear of not getting into the United States."

Srinivasan was accused of being a supporter and sympathiser of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. She was about to complete her PhD when US President Donald Trump's administration revoked her student visa for her alleged involvement in propagating and aligning with Hamas.
Her student visa was renewed in December - just a month before Trump's inauguration at the White House.
"I spent five years at Columbia University, working, I don't know, maybe 100 hours a week sometimes. I never expected the institution to let me down. But it did," she told Al Jazeera in an interview.
"I hope Columbia comes to its senses and re-enrolls me," she said, hoping for fairness and justice from an institution of global repute.

"All the requirements for my PhD are complete, and whatever is left, I don't even need to be in the US for it," she said, adding "So, I'm trying to appeal to Columbia" for them to do their bit.
<h2>How was she self deported?</h2>
Srinivasan received an email on March 6 when she woke up in her Columbia-owned apartment from the US consulate in Chennai, informing her that her visa had been cancelled.&nbsp;
She immediately checked the official immigration portal and found confirmation that her visa, which was renewed months earlier until 2029, was no longer valid.
As she panicked, Srinivasan contacted Columbia's International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO).&nbsp;

The Next day, ten minutes into that Zoom call, there was a knock on her door.&nbsp;
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement were on the door, who without properly identifying themselves, demanded entry, and said they intended to place her in removal proceedings. Her roommate refused to open the door.
&ldquo;I freaked out. Why is ICE at my door?&rdquo; Srinivasan recalled. &ldquo;You live in Columbia housing, a place you&rsquo;d consider safe. The fact that they entered without a warrant was terrifying.&rdquo;
The ISSO adviser on the call, visibly shocked, muted herself to make frantic calls before providing Srinivasan with a list of lawyers. She said Columbia&rsquo;s Public Safety advised her not to open the door but offered little else.
The next day, the agents returned to her door, warning that they would keep coming "every day" until she was placed in removal proceedings.&nbsp;
It was the same day when Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian Green Card holder and protest leader, was arrested from Columbia housing.

However, she did not wait for deportation and with no legal recourse, she packed a single bag, leaving behind her furniture, belongings, and even her cat, Cricket&mdash;and fled to Canada on March 11 using a visitor visa she had previously secured for academic workshops and conferences.
Three days later, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a photo of Srinivasan on X, calling her a "terrorist sympathiser" and claiming that she had "self-deported" using a border control app.&nbsp;
&ldquo;If supporting the idea of human rights or ending a genocide is equated with supporting Hamas, then anyone in proximity to me &ndash; without me having done anything &ndash; can just be picked up and made an example of,&rdquo; Srinivasan said.

In a shocking incident, a woman was violently attacked in Canada&rsquo;s Calgary train station platform as the bystanders watched in silence. The video of the assault surfaced on social media and has been widely shared online, sparking outrage as no one seemed to help the woman, who appears to be of Indian origin.
According to Calgary&rsquo;s City News Everywhere, the incident happened on Sunday (Mar 23) around 1:40 pm at the City Hall/Bow Valley College CTrain Station in Calgary. Reportedly, the man grabbed the woman&rsquo;s water bottle and splashed water on her face. He then shook her violently and slammed her into the walls of the transit shelter. The attacker fled the scene without her phone, following which the woman called the police.

According to police, the man identified as Braydon Joseph James French, 31, was arrested about 25 minutes later with the help of witnesses. He was charged with one count of attempted robbery.

The footage showed that while several people gathered nearby nobody stepped in to stop the attacker or help the woman, sparking outrage and accusations of racism on social media due to her ethnicity.

&ldquo;Shame on the people who are just seeing,&rdquo; a user wrote.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Funny the whole conversation would be to deport if it was the other way around. How about whoever does the crime, does the time. Fair on both ends,&rdquo; another user said.

The police also said that they don&rsquo;t believe the attack to be racially motivated. &ldquo;However, their Diversity Resource Team is engaging with those in the community who are impacted by this incident,&rdquo; the statement added.
The victim was offered support and is respectfully asking for privacy, the police said.

Singh was found guilty of possession with intent to distribute. His trial began on March 17, while sentencing is expected on June 25. He could face a maximum prison term of 20 years and may also face deportation from the US, according to the United States Attorney&rsquo;s Office.

The conviction comes amid the heightened tension between the two countries over US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s accusation that Canada is becoming a dangerous centre for fentanyl production and export.
&ldquo;Mr. Singh trafficked more than 170 pounds of illegal drugs across our northern border into the United States,&rdquo; said Acting United States Attorney Richard Barker. He added that the seizure was one of the largest ever in Eastern Washington and had a street value of more than $7.8 million.&nbsp;

Singh&rsquo;s smuggling operation came to light on April 29, 2023, when the US Border Patrol agents detected three individuals carrying backpacks and a suitcase in a remote area south of the US-Canada border, close to Danville, Washington port of entry.&nbsp;

Minutes later, Singh was stopped while driving a rented Honda Odyssey away from the US-Canada border. He was found with the same backpacks and the suitcase that were carried by the three individuals. Border Patrol Agents found 173.7 pounds of MDMA in the van. Investigators also found a map of the area on his phone and details of plans in the messages.
While the three couriers were able to get away back to Canada, Singh was arrested.
&ldquo;The transnational drug trafficking organization for whom Singh worked had identified the ideal, isolated location in rural Washington to smuggle illegal drugs across the northern border,&rdquo; said Barker. &ldquo;Fortunately, our team of experienced Border Patrol agents were ready, and they intercepted this poison before it could harm communities in Eastern Washington.&rdquo;
