California faced mass power outages, closure of both beaches and motorways as well as flooding as a rare winter storm swept the US state.

After days of fierce and chilly winds and frigid temperatures, more than 120,000 citizens are living without electricity in areas of Los Angeles. The central north-south motorway located on the West Coast, Interstate 5, remains closed due to heavy snow in the mountainous section, also called the Grapevine.

The winter storm, which is expected to weaken, is among the strongest which have hit the state. Trees have been toppled by relentless winds and power lines downed.

The authorities stated that all the beaches remained closed on Saturday for several hours because of lightning strikes in LA County. Reports also surfaced of flights being grounded in the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the latest bulletin around 20:00 GMT on Saturday (12:00 local time) in which it issued a warning of thunderstorms and heavy rains over Southern California.

"As the front moves inland, snow will move over the Northern Intermountain Region and into Northern California on Sunday morning," stated the NWS.

Till now, no casualties or injuries have been reported due to the storm. Earlier, Los Angeles, a city which is known for its sun-kissed boulevards and palm trees, received snowfall.

Rare winter storm wreaks havoc in California, as LA remains blanketed in snow

In California, a very chilly winter storm slowed down major highways near Los Angeles and Santa Cruz, dumped snow on coastal hills that rarely get it, and knocked out electricity to more than 110,000 homes and businesses.

Nick Castro, an exterminator in California would have thought it was a regular day when he received a call from some house owner claiming worms were coming out of a wall. However, what happened later has become news that has gone viral across. Castro, upon reaching the said home, in search of the worms, found a treasure of acorns, hidden by hungry woodpeckers in the chimney of the house. Castro and his crew discovered a 317-kilogramme stash of acorns that were carried out in as many as eight garbage bags. "Came across this on a job. Bird was a bit of a hoarder. Filled up about 8 garbage bags full of acorns weighing in about 700 lbs. Unreal, never came across something like this," said Nick in a Facebook post. “I’ve never seen anything like that. The more acorns I pulled out from the wall, the more there were. It felt like it wasn’t going to end," he added whilst talking to the media. × Woodpeckers, especially the acorn woodpeckers are naturally known for being prodigious acorn collectors. They usually store such large quantities of acorns in small holes of a dying tree. First, they drill the hole meticulously and then fill up the cavity and guard it ferociously as well. However, they are known to choose unusual spots such as the wall cavity to drop their favourite food item. WATCH | World of Africa: Fathering 102 children is hectic! × Notably, the woodpeckers had earlier dropped their acorns in the wood siding of the house. But after a previous owner wrapped the house in vinyl, the woodpeckers started stacking them inside the chimney. Castro added that since the birds could not access the acorns as they fell into the wall cavity, they kept filling the gap with more and more nuts - in this case, acting as a bit of a hoarder. NUTS! Woodpeckers stash 300 kg of acorns in a California home

Two broken coconuts lay in the frame, as the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) received a jar of peanuts from a top NASA official, at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in United States.

While the small jar of peanuts and coconuts in the photograph has gotten netizens going nuts, it is actually the sophisticated, space-grade science equipment (model of which is seen in the cover photograph) placed to the rear of the dignitaries, that must hog all the limelight.

Seen towards the rear of the frame is a model of the crucial component of the first-ever India-US joint satellite mission known as NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar(NISAR). The equipment was being accorded a ceremonial send-off from NASA"s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, by following the Indian tradition of breaking coconuts during an auspicious event and the NASA-JPL tradition of sharing "lucky peanuts" during a high-profile mission.

NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) observatory being jointly developed by the American and Indian Space agencies. It is meant to carry L and S dual-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), a highly powerful, all-weather, day and night mean of imaging from space, that can help researchers and scientists observe changes in Earth’s land and ice surfaces down to fractions of an inch. Since early 2021, engineers and technicians at JPL have been integrating and testing NISAR’s two radar systems – the L-band SAR provided by JPL and the S-band SAR built by ISRO.

ISRO is providing the spacecraft bus, the S-band SAR, the launch vehicle, and associated launch services and satellite mission operations.

NISAR will gather radar data with a drum-shaped reflector antenna almost 40 feet (12 meters) in diameter. It will use a signal-processing technique called interferometric synthetic aperture radar, or InSAR, to observe changes on Earth, that can be used to predict natural disasters, track climate change.

"The observations NISAR makes will help researchers measure the ways in which Earth is constantly changing by detecting both subtle and dramatic movements. Slow-moving variations of a land surface can precede earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions, and data about such movement could help communities prepare for natural hazards. Measurements of melting sea ice and ice sheets will improve understanding of the pace and impacts of climate change, including sea level rise" said NASA.

Over the course of its three-year prime mission, the satellite will observe nearly the entire planet every 12 days, making observations day and night, in all weather conditions. “Today we come one step closer to fulfilling the immense scientific potential NASA and ISRO envisioned for NISAR when we joined forces more than eight years ago,” Chairman, ISRO, Somanath said. JPL Director, Laurie Leshin said, "By delivering measurements at unprecedented precision, NISAR’s promise is new understanding and positive impact in communities. Our collaboration with ISRO exemplifies what’s possible when we tackle complex challenges together."

Later this month, NASA-JPL will move the SUV-size satellite payload into a special cargo container for a 9,000-mile (14,000-kilometer) flight to India’s U R Rao Satellite Centre in the city of Bengaluru. At least eight people were injured and one was killed in a shootout at an Oakland gas station, late Monday (January 23) said the San Francisco Bay Area police, reported Associated Press. The incident in Oakland took place hours after two other mass shootings in the United States’, California. The state has now witnessed three mass shootings within three days.
