Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract until June 2026 with an option to extend for a further year, the Premier League club announced on Friday.

The Portugal international joined United from Sporting in January 2020 and the playmaker has since become a key player at the club, winning their player of the year award twice.

The 27-year-old has scored 49 goals and made 39 assists in 117 appearances in all competitions for United, though his form has dipped this season.

"Even after two years, it still feels amazing to step out at Old Trafford, to hear the fans sing my song and to score in front of the Stretford End," Fernandes said.

"There is so much more that I want to achieve here, and I know that is the same for the rest of the squad and staff. More than anything, we want to give the fans the success that they deserve.

"We have shared some great moments over the last years, but the best is yet to come from myself and this team."

Fernandes also helped Portugal seal a spot in this year's World Cup after scoring a brace in their victory against North Macedonia in the European qualifiers this week.

"I think that's very good news for the club, for the fans, the supporters also for Bruno to know he will be here for the next five years I suppose," United manager Ralf Rangnick told reporters.

"There's no doubt he's a very important player for this club and this team... I already congratulated him yesterday after his return from the World Cup qualifiers. He played very well and scored the most important goals to qualify."

United are sixth in the league on 50 points after 29 matches and they host Leicester City on Saturday.

Portugal's Bruno Fernandes scored a clinical double as they beat stubborn visitors North Macedonia 2-0 to qualify for the World Cup finals in Qatar after a tense European playoff tie on Tuesday.

Roared on by 50,000 fans at a sold-out Dragao Stadium in Porto, Portugal dominated the game from the start but struggled to break down the strong North Macedonian defence, managing only three shots on target despite having almost 70% possession.

Fernandes opened the scoring 30 minutes into the first half after intercepting a pass by his best friend, North Macedonia captain Stefan Ristovski, working a great one-two with Cristiano Ronaldo before whipping his shot past the goalkeeper.

The 27-year-old attacking midfielder sealed Portugal's win in the 65th minute, striking home a volley from a Diogo Jota cross.

"I have already won two competitions and I hope I can win the third one in Qatar," coach Santos told a news conference.

"There was a spirit of mutual help and great support from the public. It was a deserved and fair win and qualification. I don't remember any great goalscoring situations for their team."

They were pushed into the playoffs after finishing second in Group A, having lost their final game at home to Serbia 2-1 last November.

That had left them needing to win two consecutive elimination games to qualify, with last week's win over Turkey, where they survived late drama, setting up a decider against North Macedonia, who had stunned Italy in their opening match.

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has responded after fans speculated that his recent Instagram post with Eric Bailly and Raphael Varane was a dig on his teammate Harry Maguire. Fernandes has also rubbished the rumours of a rift between him and Maguire, whose captaincy position at the club has come under the scanner amid a string of poor performances on the pitch.

A lot has been speculated about a potential power struggle in the Manchester United dressing room with the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo emerging as a contender to challenge Maguire for captaincy. Fans had fueled the fire to the reports of a rift between Maguire and Fernandes when the midfielder shared a picture on Instagram with Bailly and Varane. “feeling very safe," Fernandes captioned the post in which he can be seen standing between the two centre backs during training. Fans were quick to speculate that it was a dig on Maguire, who is competing with Varane and Bailly for the central defender position at the club.

Responding to the speculations, Fernandes clarified his&nbsp;post was not a dig on Maguire and that people question everything at Manchester United. The Portuguese, who has regained his lost form in the league with brilliant performances in the last few games, said people always make stories around the club and its players but it's important for them to stick together.

Bruno Fernandes responds after fans claim he took a dig at Man Utd teammate Harry Maguire in Instagram post

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville described the current side as "a bunch of whingebags" and singled out Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes for their attitude during Monday`s 1-1 Premier League draw at Newcastle United

Substitute Edinson Cavani`s opportunistic 71st-minute goal cancelled out Allan Saint-Maximin`s early strike as interim United boss Ralf Rangnick`s unbeaten start stretched to four games in all competitions.

The German manager was less than impressed with United`s passive display, and Sky Sports pundit Neville also vented his ire at halftime.

"They`ve not done one single thing right as a team, and not one single player can go in and say they`ve done their jobs, or even done themselves justice," Neville told Sky Sports.

"They`re whinging at each other... a bunch of whingebags!"
Neville said after the game he was especially disappointed with Ronaldo and Fernandes.

"They`re the two senior players. It`s devastating for younger players when the two best players are looking at every other player like they`re not good enough," he said.

United, who host Burnley on Thursday, are seventh on 28 points.

'A bunch of whingebags': Gary Neville blasts Ronaldo and Bruno after Man Utd struggle against Newcastle

Bruno Fernandes blazed a stoppage-time penalty over the crossbar as Aston Villa earned a shock 1-0 victory at a below-par Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Kortney Hause`s 88th-minute header put Villa on course for their first league win over United since 2009, but the defender`s handball gifted United an opportunity to steal a point, only for Fernandes to miss the target.

Since Cristiano Ronaldo re-signed for United, there has been much debate over who will take penalties and free kicks this season – last term`s spot-kick taker Fernandes or his fellow Portuguese.

It was Fernandes who took the first direct free kick on Saturday, firing into the wall, with Ronaldo getting the next one, and Fernandes, following Hause`s handball, never looked back as he placed the ball on the spot in the 92nd minute.

But last season`s top scorer missed only his second spot-kick for the club to the dismay of an expectant crowd.

"First of all the way they (Villa players) get round the penalty spot, get round Bruno and that, that`s not to my liking," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.

"Bruno is usually very good in those positions and unfortunately he missed this one."

In truth, United got what they deserved. Villa had two great opportunities to break the deadlock in the first half with full back Matt Targett blazing over from two metres out, before Ollie Watkins was denied by a fine save from United goalkeeper David de Gea.

The home side, encouraged by a frustrated Old Trafford crowd, stepped it up late in the match, but Hause climbed highest to stun the hosts before Fernandes` miss and United tasted league defeat for the first time this season.

That second successive home loss in all competitions means United dropped to fourth in the standings on goal difference, with the top four sides all on 13 points. Villa climbed to seventh.

Solskjaer called for a fast start from his side in his programme notes having seen his team often struggle to get going, and that is exactly what he got as Fernandes wasted a great chance inside two minutes.

However, the hosts tailed off and really should have gone behind at halftime as Targett and Watkins missed great opportunities.

The home fans were getting restless as the Premier League’s top goalscorers struggled to create clear-cut chances, with two headers as close as United came to breaking the deadlock before the break.

The game opened up as the second half wore on with Mason Greenwood going close, before De Gea denied Watkins with another fine save.

But the Spanish stopper could do nothing as Hause powered his header home, sparking wild scenes of celebration in the away end.

The headlines, however, went to Fernandes, as his miss gave Villa a famous and thoroughly deserved success.

"It (a Villa win at Old Trafford) has been a long time coming," Villa coach Dean Smith said. "Our performance levels have been good the last couple of times we`ve been here.

"What that does is it gives an awful lot of belief to the players now."

“I spoke to him a few months ago and told him that I would like to play with him again. So, who knows what the future has waiting for us. For me, he is a really, really top player.”

Bruno Fernandes and Piotr Zielinski played together at Udinese in Serie A from 2013 to 2016, preceding he left to play for Sporting Lisbon while Zielinski moved to Napoli.

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has commended Piotr Zielinski. As indicated by the Portuguese, Zielinski was better prepared and more trained contrasted with him during their time together at Udinese. Bruno Fernandes said:&nbsp;

“Technically, I can say that Zieliński is better trained than I am. We had a good challenge. I think in the past, Zieliński was actually a bit shy. He was really young then, just like me, at that time.”

Fernandes has said that notwithstanding both he and Zielinski coming from different foundations, the pair bit by bit became companions and have kept a solid relationship off the field since.&nbsp;

“However, we came from different countries, different mentality, and it was different for both of us. I have a really good relationship with Piotr. He’s a top guy, I like him a lot.

He is one of the people I met in Italy with whom I am in touch all the time."
In spite of freely conceding that he might want to play close by Piotr Zielinski, the 26-year-old neglected to specify at what club he might want that to occur. Notwithstanding, with Bruno Fernandes' Manchester United agreement set to run until the late spring of 2025, it is protected to expect that the Portuguese would adore his bosses to sign Zielinski from Napoli.&nbsp;

Having joined Napoli from Udinese in 2016, Piotr Zielinski has splayed 238 times for the Italian side, scoring 32 goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo leads a formidable front line for defending European champions Portugal as coach Fernando Santos unveiled his Euro 2020 squad on Thursday.

Ronaldo, who added the Italian Cup to his collection this week and has scored over 100 goals for Juventus, is joined by Manchester City's Bernardo Silva and Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes.

Atletico Madrid's Joao Felix, who can win the Spanish league title this week, and Liverpool striker Diogo Jota complete their frontline for the tournament starting on June 11.

Joining them will be Andre Silva, who has scored more goals in a Bundesliga season than any other Eintracht Frankfurt player.

Santos' list of defenders makes for equally impressive reading as Portugal wants to put up a strong defense of their title.

Football: Cristiano Ronaldo leads formidable attack in Portugal's Euro squad

Bruno Fernandes' superb free-kick sent troubled Liverpool crashing out of the FA Cup as Manchester United beat their bitter rivals 3-2 in the fourth round, while Tammy Abraham's hat-trick eased the pressure on Chelsea manager Frank Lampard in a win over Luton on Sunday.

Fernandes struck with 12 minutes left at Old Trafford to cap a thrilling clash that left Liverpool searching for answers after another painful defeat.

Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead through Mohamed Salah's first-half goal, but Mason Greenwood equalised before the interval.

Marcus Rashford put United in front after the break and, although Salah equalised, Portugal midfielder Fernandes came off the bench to fire his free-kick past Alisson Becker.

After slumping to fourth in the Premier League following Thursday's shock 1-0 defeat against Burnley -- their first league loss at Anfield since 2017 -- Liverpool have to lick their wounds again.

The English champions, who trail leaders United by six points, have won only one of their last seven games in all competitions and that lone success came against Aston Villa's youth team in the FA Cup third round.

Liverpool struck in the 18th minute when Roberto Firmino threaded a pass to Salah, who lifted his shot over Dean Henderson.

United levelled in the 26th minute when Rashford sent Greenwood clear for a low strike past Alisson Becker.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men netted again in the 48th minute as a mistake from Liverpool's young defender Rhys Williams allowed Greenwood to race clear and score.

Firmino's cross was converted by Salah for Liverpool's 58th-minute equaliser, but Fernandes won it with his sublime set-piece after Fabinho fouled Edinson Cavani.

United will host West Ham in the fifth round as their momentum continues to build.

"You know when you go a goal down the reaction of everyone was really good. We played some really good stuff, good goals. We have to defend well against them and we managed to react well," Solskjaer said.

Liverpool have never got past the fifth round in Klopp's reign, but that will be the least of his concerns as he tries to spark a revival from his spluttering team.

"There was a lot of&nbsp;good things and some mistakes around the goals. If you want to win here you have to be absolutely top and we were not," Klopp said.

<h2>- Relief for Lampard -</h2>

Lampard has been under the spotlight, but there was some relief for the Blues boss as Abraham's finishing helped seal a 3-1 victory against Luton.

The England striker struck twice in the opening 17 minutes, first firing into the far corner before heading home from close range for his 10th goal of the season.

However, it was not all plain sailing for Lampard's men as goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was at fault for another sloppy goal, while Timo Werner's lack of confidence will not have been helped by missing a penalty.

Jordan Clark's low shot crept past Kepa's woeful attempted save to give Luton a lifeline and the world's most expensive 'keeper had to make a much more difficult stop to deny Harry Cornick an equaliser in the second half.

A brilliant team move finally killed the tie off 16 minutes from time as substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi crossed for Abraham to tap home from point-blank range.

Werner had a chance to score just his second goal in 16 games when he was tripped by Clark, but his dreadful spell continued as his tame penalty was saved by Simon Sluga.

A trip to Barnsley in the fifth round awaits early next month in what is likely to be Chelsea's best chance of a trophy this season.

Leicester and Everton were also successful over Championship opposition to maintain their fine form.

The Foxes came from behind to beat Brentford 3-1 to set up a home tie against Brighton.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck on his return from injury as Everton saw off Sheffield Wednesday 3-0. Carlo Ancelotti's men will face the winners of Tottenham's trip to Wycombe on Monday.

Burnley beat Fulham 3-0 at Craven Cottage and play Bournemouth or Crawley in the last 16.

Since then, their rivals Manchester City and Chelsea have dominated the league. United came third in the last season and went to book a semi-final spot in FA Cup and Europa League. Bruno played a key role in them after joining the club in January. "For me, it doesn't matter about the other teams. People may say they're better than us, they have a better first eleven than us, guys who come from the bench are better. People can say what they think, I don't care," Fernandes said on the UTD podcast. "For a club like United, it's a long time since we won the Premier League. It's too long, I think. So you have to have in your mind - all the players, all the staff - we're here to win. And I think we have that mentality. "I came to Manchester to win trophies. You're playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. This club has made history in the past, an amazing history." But Manchester United have had a terrible start to the current season as they sit on 14th position with three victories, three defeats and a draw from their opening seven games. They take on promoted West Bromwich Albion next Saturday as action resumes following the international break. (Inputs from Reuters)

'We're here to win the league and we have that mentality': Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty in extra time as Manchester United scraped past FC Copenhagen 1-0 on Monday in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, reshaped into an eight-team straight knockout tournament in Germany due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Portugal international notched his competition-best seventh goal of the season as United set up a semi-final clash against Sevilla or Wolves, joining Inter Milan in the last four following the Italian side's 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in Dusseldorf.&nbsp;

"Third time this season we've been to the semis, every competition we've been in. Delighted we've gone through, we deserved to win tonight," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told BT Sport.

"Their keeper was fantastic, unbelievable. We hit the post a few times, there were a couple of VAR decisions against us. It could have been one of those nights that you end up with penalty shoot outs. They made it hard for us."

All games from the quarter-finals onwards in this season's Europa League are being played behind closed doors as one-off ties across four venues -- Cologne, Duisburg, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen -- in a unique format following a five-month interruption.

Solskjaer recalled Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial but the 2017 competition winners struggled early, and 18-year-old Copenhagen forward Mohamed Daramy was twice involved as the Danish underdogs threatened a creaking United backline.

Eric Bailly intervened just as Daramy attempted to stab home a bouncing cross, and the Ivorian defender was then played into trouble by Fred with Jens Stage's subsequent effort blocked.

Rashford finally tested Karl-Johan Johnsson just before the interval with a long-range shot -- the first of a multitude of saves for Copenhagen's outstanding Swedish goalkeeper.&nbsp;

Greenwood looked to have put United ahead as he drilled in via the far post moments later only for the teenager to be ruled offside following a VAR review.

He again went close early in the second half when he slammed against the upright, with Fernandes promptly smacking the opposite post with a dipping 20-yard drive.&nbsp;

The Portugal international, who scored five times in the group stage with Sporting, stung the palms of Johnsson with another hit from distance -- shortly after Aaron Wan-Bissaka made a desperation block to thwart Bryan Oviedo after a mesmerising dribble from Rasmus Falk.

<h2>- Johnsson outstanding in goal -</h2>

&nbsp;

Appearing in their first European quarter-final, and the first Danish club to reach this stage since 1997, Copenhagen continued to frustrate United as they sought a repeat of their 1-0 win when the clubs last met in the Champions League group stage in 2006.

Martial nearly won the game in normal time but again a sprawling Johnsson tipped away his curling attempt that appeared destined for the top corner.

The France striker was once more repelled by Johnsson at the start of extra time, but Martial won a penalty as United kept the attack alive and the striker was upended by Andreas Bjelland.

Fernandes blasted home from the spot on 95 minutes but Solskjaer's team were left to sweat until the end as Johnsson pulled off sensational stops from the Portuguese and substitute Juan Mata, with Victor Lindelof the third United player to strike the post.

United though ultimately ensured their 2019-20 campaign will extend into a second year, having started the season 365 days ago with a 4-0 Premier League win over Chelsea. Awaiting them on Sunday will be Sevilla -- who have won the Europa League and its precursor, the UEFA Cup, a record five times -- or domestic rivals Wolves.

Former United striker Romelu Lukaku grabbed the decisive goal for Antonio Conte's Inter against Leverkusen as the Serie A runners-up moved a step closer to adding to their titles from 1991, 1994 and 1998.

Inter struck first as Nicolo Barella guided in from the edge of the area on 15 minutes, with Lukaku bundling in a second six minutes later.

Kai Havertz reduced the deficit in possibly his final game for Leverkusen on 25 minutes after exchanging passes with fellow Germany international Kevin Volland, but Inter held on to seal their place against Shakhtar Donetsk or Basel in next week's semi-final.

"The defence did a tremendous job again tonight. We are growing but we have to learn to kill games off when we have the chances to do it, and we didn't tonight," said Lukaku.

"Now we have time to recover physically and prepare for another great game. We will have to be ready."

Fernandes penalty lifts Man Utd past dogged Copenhagen

Manchester United were given a controversial helping hand by VAR in their 3-0 win at Aston Villa, while Tottenham suffered fresh frustration at the hands of the review system in their 0-0 draw at Bournemouth on Thursday.

United were far too strong for lowly Villa, but their opening goal came from a dubious penalty that left the hosts fuming.

In the 27th minute, United midfielder Bruno Fernandes spun into Ezri Konsa before tumbling in the area despite little evidence of a foul by the Villa defender.

The penalty stood after a VAR review and Fernandes slotted home his eighth goal since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January.

"It all changed on the penalty decision. Fernandes' first touch is on the ball, his second touch is on Konsa's shin," Villa manager Dean Smith said.

"I can understand (referee) Jon (Moss) getting it wrong but if that goes to VAR I don't know what they are looking at. It's a disgraceful decision."

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer disagreed: "I think it's a penalty. The boy sticks out his leg, Fernandes does a fantastic 'Zidane turn' and he lands on him."

United doubled their lead in first half stoppage-time when 18-year-old Mason Greenwood scored his fourth goal in three games with a fierce finish.

Paul Pogba got the third in the 58th minute, the France midfielder bagging his first goal of an injury-hit season with a low curler from 18 yards.

Fifth placed United move to within one point of fourth placed Leicester in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

United, unbeaten in their last 17 games in all competitions, are the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive matches by a margin of three or more goals.

Second bottom Villa are four points from safety and haven't won in six games since the restart.

There was more VAR controversy at Dean Court, with Tottenham left in danger of missing out on European competition for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

Jose Mourinho's side were off-key for long periods, but could feel hard done by after Josh King's push on Harry Kane in the penalty area went unpushed despite a VAR review in the first half.

Just a week after Tottenham were the victims of a harsh VAR decision in their loss at Sheffield United, Mourinho felt they were the victims of another bad mistake by the replay official.

"The same referee who did the VAR decision against Sheffield United, Michael Oliver. Opinions matter, It's not only mine. Everybody knows that's a penalty and when I say everybody, I mean everybody," Mourinho said.

"Normally at minute five we would be winning 1-0 against a team in trouble, I think the game would be completely different.

"The game had the most important moment. You know when, you know who. Like Sheffield, the man of the match was not one of the players."

Just a year after reaching the Champions League final, Tottenham sit in ninth place in the Premier League, 10 points off the top four and far from certain to make next season's Europa League.

Third bottom Bournemouth thought they had won it in stoppage-time, but Callum Wilson's overhead kick clearly hit King's hand on its way past Hugo Lloris and their celebrations were curtailed by VAR.

Eddie Howe's men, without a win in nine matches, are three points from safety with just four games left to avoid relegation.

At Goodison Park, Southampton held Everton to a 1-1 draw as Danny Ings boosted his bid for the Premier League's Golden Boot.

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse won a penalty in the 28th minute when he was tripped by Andre Gomes, but the midfielder blazed his spot-kick against the crossbar.

Three minutes after that blunder, Ings put Southampton ahead, rounding Jordan Pickford to claim his 19th league goal of the season, three behind the top-flight's current leading scorer Jamie Vardy.

Richarlison equalised in the 43rd minute with a clinical finish from Lucas Digne's superb long pass for his 14th goal of the season.

"Normally at minute five we would be winning 1-0 against a team in trouble, I think the game would be completely different. "The game had the most important moment. You know when, you know who. Like Sheffield, the man of the match was not one of the players." Just a year after reaching the Champions League final, Tottenham sit in ninth place in the Premier League, 10 points off the top four and far from certain to make next season's Europa League.

VAR in the dock as Man Utd down Villa, Spurs frustrated

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes he can rekindle Paul Pogba's best form after the Frenchman made a big impact in his first appearance for six months in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham on Friday.

Solskjaer left the World Cup winner on the bench from the start, but Pogba won the penalty for United's equaliser, converted by Bruno Fernandes, with a sublime piece of skill to bamboozle Eric Dier.

Pogba has been beset by ankle injuries this season, making just nine appearances, and has been heavily linked with a move away from Manchester.&nbsp;

"Paul always has a point to prove because he wants to be the best," said Solskjaer. "He's had such a frustrating season with his injuries.

"For me Paul has shown today how he can contribute. I just look forward to getting him fitter so he can get back to his best."

A point does little for either side's chances of breaking into the top four.

United remain in fifth, two points behind Chelsea, but Spurs were even more desperate for the points as they remain in eighth, four points further back.

Jose Mourinho was on course to get the better of his former club when Steven Bergwijn's strike gave Spurs a half-time lead.

However, Mourinho was left frustrated when United's second half pressure finally told nine minutes from time when Fernandes converted from the spot.

Fernandes then thought he had won a second penalty, but a VAR review decided there was little contact as he went down under another challenge from Dier.

"We know Manchester United has an incredible record this season of penalties given, so we knew everything in the box was dangerous for us," said Mourinho.

"I think in the first penalty, the referee made this decision which I admit is difficult for referees, but then the VAR is a different story.

"Referees can make mistakes but I don't think VAR should make mistakes, then the second penalty is incredible for me."

In keeping with all matches since the Premier League's return earlier this week, all players and officials took a knee before kick in protest against racial injustice.

Once the action did get underway, United settled quickest to the eery surroundings of a 62,000 seater stadium draped in banners with the only fans appearing on giant video screens behind each goal.

Marcus Rashford has had a momentous week as the English international's campaign to ensure vulnerable children are not left without food vouchers during the English school holidays forced a government U-turn.

Solskjaer described the 22-year-old's action as far "more important than any game of football that he would probably play."

However, the England international admitted he was also desperate to get back to the day job after being sidelined since January with a back injury prior to the coronavirus-enforced shutdown of football for three months.

Rashford had the best chance to turn the visitors' early control into a goal as his low shot was beaten away by the legs of Hugo Lloris.

Prior to lockdown, Mourinho spoke of his desire to fast forward to the end of the season when he would have Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Moussa Sissoko and Bergwijn fit again.

All four were fit to return to the starting line-up and it was an inspired moment from the Dutchman which opened the scoring.

Bergwijn surged past the leaden-footed Harry Maguire before David de Gea could only parry his powerful shot into the roof of the net.

Tottenham sat on their lead after the break and invited plenty of United pressure.

Lloris kept United at bay with an incredible save to deny compatriot Anthony Martial.

Pogba was then introduced from the bench and made an instant impact in his first appearance since December 26.

The midfielder's quick feet left Eric Dier in his wake and Dier then pushed Pogba over inside the box as he tried to recover.

Fernandes coolly sent Lloris the wrong way from the penalty spot to deservedly level and moments later went down himself inside the box.

Jon Moss pointed to the spot again, but Rashford's chance to score the winner was taken from him as this time the VAR call went Mourinho's way.

'What a day they've had today', says Solskjaer after Manchester United complete derby double over Manchester City

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer risked angering Manchester United fans on Wednesday, saying it was only a "loud minority" who want <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/paul-pogba-must-stay-at-manchester-united-says-juan-mata-237724&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwihif-Zsc3jAhVJPI8KHcbCDhUQFjABegQIAhAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw08boDTtHmG1m1tX3emz5Sa">Paul Pogba</a> out of the club.

The French midfielder has made clear his determination to leave the Premier League giants, with Real Madrid and his former club Juventus both said to be interested.

But Solskjaer has made clear that he wants to keep the World Cup winner, as he attempts to steer the Old Trafford club back into the Champions League.

The 26-year-old Pogba's publicly stated wish to leave, and his tepid displays at the end of last season, have infuriated many United supporters.

Asked if he expected a backlash from United supporters against the Frenchman, Solskjaer said: "I think our fans know what Paul has given the club and can give us."

The Norwegian, who will need a fast start to the season to convince doubters he's the right man for one of the biggest jobs in football, said: "Of course there are some loud and small minority (against Pogba), but Paul has been absolutely top in the group.

"Me and the players will testify to that - that he's never ever been a problem and we are just grateful that he performs as well as he does," said the manager, speaking on the eve of a friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in Shanghai.

Solskjaer meanwhile urged patience and denied that he was frustrated by the club's failure to sign more players this summer.

United have bought winger Daniel James and full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

But they are yet to seal a deal for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire, and <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/paul-pogba-central-to-manchester-united-rebuilding-plans-says-ole-gunnar-solskjaer-236576&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwihif-Zsc3jAhVJPI8KHcbCDhUQFjAAegQIAxAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw1sAMRV0txbOMXae8IGhsrO">Solskjaer</a> is also reportedly eyeing Portuguese playmaker Bruno Fernandes.

"I am very happy with the two mentioned (James and Wan-Bissaka), we have got to be patient," said the 46-year-old former United predator, adding that he "believed in" his squad.

"It's a long haul and very important we get the right ones (players) in, we can't just jump on a different path when you hit a hurdle."

One player who looks certain to leave is forward Romelu Lukaku, who is interesting Inter Milan.

The big Belgian will again be absent on Thursday because of injury, but reports suggest that the player and the club are happy to part ways.
