Naana Oppon, the newly crowned British tumbling champion at the age of 16, heads to the Trampolining World Championships this week confident of winning a medal and encouraging more "black or girls of colour" to take up the sport. Oppon says she "loves seeing the world upside down" as she jumps and twists down the 25-metre (82-foot) track with only her hands and feet allowed to touch the surface.

"As much as you have to stay focused there is also a sense of freedom and it is great fun," she told AFP in a Zoom interview. "It comes with a lot of skills. It is a very power-based sport and that was what drew me in."

Not surprisingly she identifies strongly with the American four-time Olympic gold medallist and says she "absolutely" hopes she can be as inspirational as Biles.

"In the gym, people doing tumbling specifically do not look like me, either black or people of colour. The way Biles carries herself has been a big inspiration," Oppon said. "I think I have already definitely inspired the black community and people of colour to try tumbling out.

Britain's largest police force, The London Metropolitan Police, began this year to review its handling of cases against nearly 1100 of its officers, cases that were previously closed. These include allegations of sexual assault. "Any sexual exploitation of young people is abhorrent and our hearts go out to the victims in this case," said a spokesperson for Snapchat as quoted by AFP. The spokesperson said that the app was using technology in order to detect and prevent such abuse and made extra protections available for under-18s. These include warning about being contacted by strangers and also functionality for parents. (With inputs from agencies)

British police charge recaptured terrorism suspect with unlawful escape

British Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt, on Sunday (September 3) vowed to “spend what it takes” to deal with the crumbling school buildings and said that the United Kingdom government will move to fix the unsafe infrastructure quickly. This comes days after more than 100 schools across England were forced to shut down over safety concerns as they were found to be made with a certain type of concrete that is prone to collapse.

In interviews with the British media, on Sunday morning, Hunt said that the majority of the 104 affected schools will be able to operate largely normally. “We will spend what it takes to sort out this problem as quickly as possible,” the British finance minister told BBC.

Pre-colonial India was one of the most prosperous times in Indian history and a lot is attributed to the traditional banking system involving bankers and merchants. But there were other groups who were a part of the banking system and contributed immeasurably to the prosperity of the regions they were situated in. One such group present throughout the 18th century in India’s Bengal region was the family of the Jagat Seths.

For years, the family dominated the Bengal money market, provided funds for both trade and government. The Jagat Seths were in close contact with the European Companies that imported a lot of silver due to their control over the credit market and coinage of specie.
The house’s fame and fortune came during the reign of Fatechand, who passed away in 1742 after nearly thirty years of influence on Bengal’s political, economic, and commercial life. His two grandchildren, Maharaja Swaroopchand and Jagat Seth Mahtab Rai, succeeded him.

How did they rise?

The House of the Jagat Seth initially made their fortune by farming the Murshidabad and Dhaka mints, collecting two-thirds of the provincial tax revenue. They were later able to influence exchange and interest rates, bill-broking, and the granting of credit. By 1720, the Seth family had completely taken control of the mint farms, with the help of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan.

The family’s power over Bengal’s money market was so strong that everyone involved accepted the exchange rate that the house set. Fatechand was able to persuade the government to take actions and adopt regulations for the rate of money exchange that would benefit the house because to his influence over the Bengal administration, which he acquired by providing financial assistance to the Nawab.

Although the exact figure of their wealth could never be measured, the family remains well-known for their assets. The House of Jagat Seth family was often compared to the Bank of England. They performed a variety of duties for the Bengal government, including tax collection and financial management. They even produced their own coinage and worked with foreign currency, which increased their fortune.

Ultimately, the Seths lost control of their lands, and the British East India Company never repaid their loan. The 1857 uprising was the last straw. The Jagat Seths had disappeared from public eye by the 1900s. Just like the Mughals, their descendants remain a mystery.

Lawyers representing the bereaved families tell a public inquiry that 80 Afghans may have been killed by British forces operating in Afghanistan between 2010 and 2013. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: 80 Afghans killed by British forces?

Around 80 Afghans may have fallen victim to summary killings perpetrated by three separate British SAS units between 2010 and 2013, according to a Guardian report.

Lawyers representing the bereaved families made these startling revelations at a public inquiry.

It is alleged that one SAS soldier personally ended the lives of 35 Afghans during a single six-month tour, following an alleged directive to eliminate "all fighting-age males" in targeted homes, regardless of the perceived threat they posed.

What do the lawyers claim?

According to the lawyers, numerous Afghans were fatally shot after being separated from their families by SAS soldiers. Even more concerning, in five incidents, the number of individuals killed exceeded the number of weapons recovered, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding these deaths.

These fresh claims have come to light through a document submitted by the law firm Leigh Day to a new public inquiry investigating allegations of war crimes committed by SAS soldiers in Afghanistan. The submission references concerns expressed by senior army officers at the time, including reports of a casual disregard for life. Despite these warnings, an internal review conducted in 2011 failed to bring about any changes in the patterns of killing.

The lawyers have documented 25 suspicious deaths between June 2011 and May 2013, including an incident where four or five Afghans lost their lives, despite the discovery of only one grenade. The intensity of the operation was so extreme that two Afghan children required urgent medical evacuation.

During the later stages of the UK's military presence in Helmand province, elite British SAS soldiers frequently conducted nighttime raids on family compounds in search of Taliban fighters. Despite previous estimates suggesting 54 Afghan victims attributed to a single SAS unit, the lawyers argue that the alleged offences involve a larger number of British troops and span a longer timeframe than initially suspected. The claims point to a disturbing pattern of unlawful extrajudicial killings.

In 2014, the military police launched Operation Northmoor, investigating over 600 allegations of offences committed by British forces in Afghanistan, including allegations of civilian killings by the SAS. However, the operation was shut down in 2017 by government ministers and concluded in 2019, with the Ministry of Defence asserting no evidence of criminality. The lawyers argue that subsequent years saw a concerted cover-up involving senior officers, officials, and multiple inquiries. Troublingly, there are reports that special forces headquarters deleted data shortly before military police investigators arrived for an examination.

Fast forward now and researchers at the University College London (UCL) have figured out why the septuagenarian is unable to feel any pain. The Himalayan Mountains are home to Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth. At over 8,500 metres above sea level, it was first scaled by humans in 1953. Since then, there has been no going back as an increasing number of mountaineers attempt to reach the top, but lately a British climber stated that the snow-capped mountain is rapidly losing its snow cover, and that it is now turning dry and rocky.

In the letter, the 65-year-old had abused Patel and had also threatened to 'tear' her 'into pieces'.

Pooneeraj Canakiah sent the offensive letter in the month of January 2022 when Patel was still the Home Secretary. He was sentenced by the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London last week.

Canakiah, in the hope that the former UK home secretary would open the letter herself, marked it as 'personal'. However, before it could reach her, the letter was intercepted by the security staff.

"Your time is coming to an end, be prepared we will get you," Canakiah wrote in the letter, abusing Patel, "Be prepared, b****".

"If we don't get you, we will wait and wait and wait, and tear you to pieces," he threatened.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) official said that the content of the letter was grossly offensive. He further revealed that the writer was identified by forensic testing.

"The content of the letter was grossly offensive and abusive. Canakiah thought that he would not be caught, however, forensic analysis proved that he wrote the letter," said Senior Crown Prosecutor Lauren Doshi, from the Complex Casework Unit of the Crown Prosecution Service in London South.

"This conviction and sentence sends a clear message, that threats of this nature are taken very seriously and will not be tolerated. The CPS will not hesitate to prosecute such offences whenever our legal test is met," she said.

Analysis of the handwriting on the envelope and letter proved that Canakiah was the author.

On being interviewed by the police, he denied writing the letter but ultimately pleaded guilty.

"You sent a letter which was disgusting and threatening in nature, it was addressed to a serving MP who at the time was Home Secretary. It was vile in nature, including threats, it was offensive and vulgar," Clarke said.

As per the media reports, the defence said that the Canakiah "worked all through COVID and became very unwell during 2020".

The court was told that he suffered two heart attacks and also his mother passed away in July last year.

The defence further blamed his declining mental health for the offensive step he took and further added that he suffered from depression.

A National Health Service (NHS) worker has been imprisoned for five months for sending a threatening letter to Indian-origin former UK Home Secretary Priti Patel.

A National Health Service (NHS) worker has been imprisoned for five months for sending a threatening letter to Indian-origin former UK Home Secretary Priti Patel. 'Good riddance' say UK MPs after Priti Patel's resignation Analysis of the handwriting on the envelope and letter proved that Canakiah was the author. On being interviewed by the police, he denied writing the letter but ultimately pleaded guilty. Sentencing Canakiah to five months in prison, District Judge Briony Clarke said the letter shocked her every time she read it. "It`s an attack on democracy", The Standard quoted her as saying. The judge, however, said that she wasn't given any proof that could support Canakiah's mental health state so he must serve his five-month prison sentence before being released on licence.
