On Sunday, former Brazilian congresswoman and gospel singer, Flordelis dos Santos de Souza, was sentenced to 50 years and 28 days in prison after she was found guilty of "orchestrating" the murder of her husband, pastor Anderson do Carmo who was shot in 2019 at their home in Rio de Janeiro.

The 61-year-old and her husband were seen as a power couple among the country’s Evangelical Christian movement and were also famous for her 55 children, most of whom are adopted from the favelas or slums in Rio de Janeiro. The sentence was handed in a Rio court after she and several of their children were also accused of being complicit in the pastor's murder.

Do Carmo, in 2019, was shot at least 30 times in the garage of their house in Rio after which dos Santos claimed that armed robbers on motorcycles had chased them and attacked her husband. In 2020, prosecutors charged Dos Santos with “orchestrating the homicide, enlisting to take part in the crime and attempting to disguise it as an armed robbery.” They also suspected that this move was made in order to gain control over the couple’s finances which were controlled by Do Carmo.

She had also tried to poison her late husband with cyanide at least six times before arranging his killing, said a report by the Guardian. Simone dos Santos Rodrigues, the former congresswoman’s biological daughter was sentenced to 31 years in prison and one of her biological sons was found guilty of being a gunman who shot the pastor, has been sentenced to 33 years in prison. Last week Flordelis’s lawyers argued that she had no knowledge of her husband’s murder being carried out and said that they did so to protect her from alleged sexual and physical abuse perpetrated by her husband. However, the judge swiftly rejected these claims and said that she was the one who ordered the crime and made it look like a robbery gone wrong.

The court also said she ordered the killing “because the victim kept a strict control of the family finances and administered conflicts rigidly, refusing to give preferential treatment to the ex-lawmaker’s closest (friends) in detriment to other members of the family.” The sentence marked the end of one of the most sensational crimes in Brazil’s recent history.

The far right's attempts to invalidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva being elected president of Brazil were thwarted when a much-anticipated investigation from Brazil's defence ministry failed to find evidence of recent ballots being cast unlawfully.

Following weeks of speculations that it would embolden accusations by extremist president Jair Bolsonaro that the election was rigged, the military late on Wednesday delivered the 63-page report to Brazil's electoral authorities.

Bolsonaro, an ex-army captain, had hinted for months that he wouldn't accept defeat and regularly questioned the reliability of Brazil's electronic voting machines, while offering no proof to support his claims.

His followers expected the military to substantiate these allegations, but the only hint of uncertainty came in the shape of a feeble recommendation that a committee be set up to guarantee that the source code used in the voting machines cannot be altered, The Guardian said in a report.

Brazil military finds no proof of electoral fraud, dashes hopes of Bolsonaro supporters

Lewis Hamilton would love to celebrate his honorary Brazilian citizenship with a winning return this weekend to Sao Paulo's Interlagos, the circuit where last year he enjoyed one of his greatest victories. Formula One's seven-times world champion is still chasing his first success of the season and to do it in the penultimate race, at the home of his late boyhood idol Ayrton Senna, would be quite something.

"I need all the energy we can get, OK? We've got to get that Brazilian flag up on top (of the podium)," Hamilton told local reporters at an event with team sponsor Petronas on Wednesday. The 37-year-old Briton is battling against the odds, however. "On paper, it shouldn't be quite as strong a circuit for us as Mexico, but regardless, we want to keep up our momentum from recent races. So, we will keep working hard to hopefully be in the mix once again," said his Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.

Hamilton, who has won in every season since his debut in 2007, finished second in the previous race in Mexico. He has triumphed three times in Brazil, including two of the last three races at Interlagos, and accepted honorary citizenship this week. Formula One currently has no Brazilian driver and the last home winner was Felipe Massa in 2008, when Hamilton won his first title with McLaren.

SPRINT FORMAT

Last year's race, like this weekend's, was run to the sprint format and Hamilton went from last on the grid on Saturday to fifth at the finish, then taking a five-place drop for Sunday's main event and roaring back from 10th to win. "It's a track that both of our drivers have typically gone well at and it's a sprint race where we can pick up more points," said Mercedes' strategy chief James Vowles. "And when you have a car within a few tenths of your competition, you can make things happen."

With both titles won by Max Verstappen and Red Bull, Mercedes are fighting Ferrari for second place. The Italians are 40 points ahead with 96 available from Brazil and the final round in Abu Dhabi. Plenty is at stake from the last two races, with the division of revenues decided by the positions in the constructors' standings.

Renault-owned Alpine and McLaren are separated by only seven points in the battle for fourth while Aston Martin are four behind sixth-placed Alfa Romeo. Haas, in eighth, are a point clear of Red Bull-owned AlphaTauri.

"Thanks to the Sprint format we have two attempts in which to score points and extend our lead to McLaren heading into the final Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi," said Alpine's double world champion Fernando Alonso. At the top, Verstappen will be seeking to extend his record tally of wins in a season to 15 while Red Bull are eyeing a 10th win in a row. If they succeed, the final Sunday at Yas Marina could see Red Bull equal McLaren's 1988 record of 11 successive wins in a single season and send them into 2023 chasing Ferrari's all-time best of 14 in 1952-53.

"While the focus has, for sure, already shifted to next year with the car, we also focus on the car we have at the moment," said Verstappen, who won the season's two previous sprints, after Mexico. "We try to win the next two races, that's for sure."

Honorary Brazilian Lewis Hamilton would love a 'home' win

Seven-times Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton was made an honorary citizen of Brazil on Monday by the country's lower house of Congress and dedicated the honour to his boyhood idol, the late Brazilian triple world champion Ayrton Senna. "I feel like now I'm one of you," the Mercedes driver said in a crowded session of Congress packed with admirers in Brasilia days ahead of this year's Brazilian Grand Prix on Nov. 11 in Sao Paulo.

Hamilton delighted Brazilians by unfurling the Brazilian flag from his Mercedes during the slowing down lap after winning the last year at Sao Paulo's Interlagos circuit and later carrying the flag onto the podium. The lower house passed in June a bill to make the 37-year-old an honorary citizen that was proposed by congressman Andre Figueiredo after the British driver won the 2021 Brazilian Grand Prix for the third time.

Hamilton clinched his first world championship at Interlagos in 2008, beating Ferrari's then local favourite Felipe Massa with a devastating overtake on the last corner of the last lap of the final round of the season. A smiling Hamilton, wearing a royal blue suit, received Brazil's legislative medal of merit, a diploma and made a speech thanking his fans and dedicating the honour to Senna.

"I have so many amazing memories of Brazil," Hamilton said. "And particularly 2021. Knowing you guys would cheer me on the way was one of the most special moments of my entire life. I can't wait for us to continue to strive ahead," he added.

At the ceremony, congressmen also highlighted Hamilton's social activism, including his defence of minority groups and environmental causes. Hamilton pledged to continue pushing for diversity and said that visiting the Amazon rainforest was one of his dreams.

Brazilian President-elect Lula to attend the COP27 climate summit

On Tuesday, Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro in his first address to the nation since his election defeat to former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva did not acknowledge his election loss and said he will continue to follow the country’s constitution. This comes after he lost the run-off election on Sunday by a close margin of 49.1% to 50.9%, said the country’s electoral authority.

This speech was made at a press conference in his official residence where he was surrounded by dozens of ministers and allies, “I have always been labelled as anti-democratic and, unlike my accusers, I have always played within the four lines of the constitution,” said Bolsonaro, reported the Associated Press. This loss also makes him the first Brazilian president to lose re-election.

Celebrations on streets of Brazil as Lula defeats incumbent President Bolsonaro

The election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as president of Brazil in the run-off on October 30 was a foregone conclusion. Equally certain, after Lula failed to defeat incumbent Jair Bolsanaro in the first round on October 2, was that it would be a cliffhanger although Lula was the odds-on favourite. In the past, too, it is in the run-off that Lula had won two terms. Therefore, it is no surprise that Lula’s margin was less than two per cent.

More surprising, and significant, than the election outcome is that in such a closely fought, high-stakes presidential battle, the voter turnout was 79 per cent. In Brazil, where voting is mandatory and non-compliance punishable with a fine, nearly 5.7 million (roughly 5 per cent) cast votes that were either blank or null; which precludes their being fined. Obviously, the prospect of a fine was not a deterrent for the 32 million (20.60 per cent) who abstained from voting.

The second significant aspect is that Lula’s victory seems to have been welcomed in most world capitals, including by leaders known to be averse, if not hostile, to the left, especially in South America. Perhaps, the red tide sweeping the continent is far too powerful for any modern-day Canute to want it rolled back; and, reality requires even the world’s anti-left leaders such as US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron to accept the inevitable when the forces of regressive nationalism are on the rise in large parts of the world.

The leftward shift in South America began in 2020 in Bolivia; gained momentum in 2021 with right-wing politicians being worsted in presidential elections in Peru, Chile, Honduras and Nicaragua; and, continues on its winning trajectory. The first to score in 2022 was Colombia and now it is Brazil rooting for Lula and his pro-poor policies which are opposed to the ecological degradation that was rampant under Bolsanaro.

Lula’s victory is far more important than that of the left in that region. Brazil’s population, the size of its economy and its place in international bodies and multilateral forums invest the political outcome with a significance that should resonate far beyond South America.

Conventional, and dominant narratives, have presented that course of democracy as moving from the West to the rest of the world. (This “West” excludes South America). Less known and taught are that South American countries experienced their first democratic impulses in the early decades of the nineteenth century. The revival of truly inclusive and representative democracies in South America striving for equity, justice and accountability and founded on a new political language may now shape new accounts of the history of democracy.

Anachronistic accounts of history that flog the theme of the best of democracy flowing only from the West to the rest may be in for revision. At a time when the US, Europe and Asia are witnesses to the rise of backward nationalism, violent majoritarianism and neo-fascist forces, election outcomes in South America are cause for hope.

There is a message in these mandates that the 'advanced' West would do well to heed.

WION Spotlight | Lula takes red tide in LatAm to a new high

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, popularly known as Lula, became the new president of Brazil after defeating the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in a close-fought election on Monday. The leftist leader won 50.8 per cent of votes while his right-wing opponent finished with 49.2 per cent of all valid votes.

Lula is no stranger to the President’s office as the 77-year-old held the position for two terms from 2003 to 2011. Such was his popularity and approval ratings in Brazil that former United States President Barack Obama once called him “the most popular president on Earth”.

The former factory worker, who was well-known for his work with trade unions, rose to popularity among the leftist movement in the 1980s. It was a direct response to Brazil’s military dictatorship of the period and Lula went on to form the Workers’ party (PT) along with other leftist leaders.

While he was quite popular with a majority of the country’s population, Lula failed to win the presidential elections in both 1994 and 1998. The leftist voters kept supporting his campaigns but an opposition from factory owners and big businesses meant that his dream remained unfulfilled.

However, with strategic partnerships with business leaders and a stronger coalition, Lula finally won the elections in 2002. What followed was a golden period for the Brazilian economy with a lucrative trade deal with China and the impact of two major events - 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

However, his two terms as President were not without controversies. While Lula’s approval ratings remained at an all-time high, his government was embroiled in multiple corruption scandals. The accusations continued even when Dilma Rousseff - Lula’s handpicked successor – became president and in 2016, the reigning PT government had to let go of their position amid rising tensions.

In 2018, Lula was also convicted on corruption charges and was sent to prison along with few politicians from his party. The newly elected president of Brazil spent 580 days in jail before the charges were dropped and he was eligible to compete for the position once again.

Lula went on to challenge Bolsonaro on a pro-development platform and even gained support from the indigenous population of the country who were not happy with the current regime. He also gained support from his existing left-leaning voter case and while Bolsonaro’s pitch of a more traditional Brazil remained popular, it was not enough to stop the re-emergence of Lula.
