Brazil elections: Lula all set to make comeback to lead Latin America's largest economy

Brazil is all set to vote for the second round of elections. The country is witnessing a fierce fight between the incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro and his opponent Lula Da Silva. The duo will face each other in a final debate on Friday night ahead of the second round.

Brazil polls: Jair Bolsonaro holds last campaign rally

Economy Minister Paulo Guedes stated on Tuesday that Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's administration is considering hiking the minimum wage and civil servant wages above inflation, but he disputed plans to eliminate middle-class tax benefits.

The comments were made in advance of the Oct. 30 runoff election for president, in which right-wing Bolsonaro is trailing former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the polls. The remarks were made at a virtual event on cooperativism.

Bolsonaro's campaign took a knock after Folha de So Paulo reported last week that the government was considering eliminating a constitutional requirement to raise the minimum wage annually by at least the inflation rate from the previous year.

According to studies conducted by the ministry, the ability to deduct medical and educational costs from income tax should be eliminated, according to a story published in the O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper on Tuesday. The middle class would be primarily impacted by such a measure.

In both instances, Guedes confirmed the existence of internal studies but blamed Lula's Workers Party (PT) employees who work in the ministry for their creation and disclosure.

The minister emphasised that the Bolsonaro government aims to pass a tax reform that lessens the burden on the most vulnerable people and taxes businesses and earnings.

Later on Tuesday, the Economy Ministry issued a statement warning against mistaking purported studies, analyses, essays, and opinions created by the cabinet could not be "incorrectly taken as proposals from the ministry or the minister."

A judge in Brazil has allowed one of the jailed suspects in murder of a British journalist to secure bail and remain in house arrest. The suspect has been in police custody since July.

Ruben da Silva Villar, also known as "Colombia," was released last Friday, according to local press reports, after a ruling made three days earlier.

Villar is a suspect in murders of Dom Phillips, the British journalist and Brazilian Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira.

Federal Judge Fabiano Verli said that Villar could pay USD 2800 in Brazilian currency and await trial at an address in Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas. Villar's movements will be monitored by means of an electronic device on his ankle.

Phillips, 57, and Pereira, 41, were shot dead on June 5 in the Javari Valley, a jungle region near the Brazilian border with Peru and Colombia which is plagued by illegal fishing, logging, mining and drug trafficking.

Pereira had been working to stop illegal fishing in the Javari Valley indigenous reserve. The reserve has largest concentration of uncontacted tribed on Earth.

Phillips, a freelance journalist for The Guardian, The New York Times and other newspapers, was traveling with him to write a book called "How to Save the Amazon."

Native leaders cooperating with Pereira accused Villar of ordering the expert's death for organising Indigenous patrols that seized lucrative hauls of illegally caught fish.

Less than two weeks from the run-off elections to decide Brazil's next president, the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and the challenger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva are mathematically tied, said a new poll published on Wednesday (October 19).

Datafolha said Lula now has 49% of voter support against 45% for Bolsonaro. The poll has error margin of 2 per cent up or down, that means both the candidates may be tied at 47 per cent each.

The poll percentage of two candidates was 49 per cent for Lula and 44 per cent for Bolsonaro five days ago.

The survey has also shown that 94 per cent of Brazilian voters have decided who they will vote for. This leaves 6 per cent of voters both candidates will try hard to sway.

It was the first Datafolha survey since the presidential debate on Sunday, where Bolsonaro attacked corruption scandals under Lula's Workers Party, which governed from 2003 to 2016.

Datafolha interviewed 2,912 voters between Oct. 17-19.

Datafolha was one of the several polling firms that received criticism for underestimating support for Bolsonaro in the first round of voting. In the election, Lula had garnered 48 per cent while Bolsonaro got 43 per cent of the votes.

The FIFA World Cup is set to kick off next month, on November 20, in Qatar. It is to be noted that Qatar will be the first Arab state to host the World Cup and, hence, the excitement of the football fans knows no boundaries. Ahead of the mega event's commencement, Argentina captain Lionel Messi picked his favourites and has not named his own side.

Messi, who has announced that he will be playing his World Cup, will be eager to take his side to the coveted title in Qatar. However, when asked to pick his favourites, the 35-year-old has named Neymar-starrer Brazil and France as the two of the strongest contenders.

"We always say the same great teams... but, if I have to choose, Brazil and France are the two great candidates to win the World Cup. They've had the same group (of players) for a long time, working well," Messi said during an interview with DirectTV Sports.

"France, aside from the last Euros when they were eliminated (in the last 16) and did badly, they have some impressive players. They have a clear idea and the same coach (Didier Deschamps). Brazil is a bit the same (under Tite)," he added.

Talking about Argentina, the Messi-starrer have also been in good form in the recent past. They are heading into the marquee tournament with an unbeaten streak of 35 games (since 2019). In fact, they are just two more matches away to surpass Italy's tally to remain unbeaten for the most number of matches.

In last year, Messi-led Argentina had won the Copa America, beating Brazil to clinch the continental trophy. Hence, Messi & Co. also have the winning momentum under their belt and will look to go the distance this time around in the World Cup. In last edition of the World Cup, Argentina had lost to eventual winners France, 4-3, to bow out in the Round of 16.

The Brazilian presidential elections between the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and the main contender Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have been filled with controversies. In a recent tussle between the two candidates, Bolsonaro apologised on Tuesday following “pedophilia” accusations from his opponents.

The controversy started when Bolsonaro recounted a story about visiting the homes of "three or four very pretty 14- or 15-year-olds" last year in a poor Brasilia neighbourhood.

While the story was intended to compare the situation in Brazil with that of the struggling Venezuela, the political opponents were quick to call the comments “depraved” and within a day of the interview, #Bolsonaropedofilo (Bolsonaro pedophile) started trending on Twitter.

Bolsonaro called the attack "the most terrible of my life” and tendered an unconditional apology.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro apologises amid 'pedophilia' controversy

Thousands of Brazilians took to streets on Tuesday to show their rejection of the candidacy of the incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro. The students took out a rally in Sao Paulo and Rio de Jeneiro against Bolsonaro's government and their education budget cuts.

Brazilian presidential candidate Lula da Silva criticised football star Neymar's support of far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, accusing the player of being motivated by a debt "pardon". Last month, Neymar endorsed hardline conservative Bolsonaro as he fights to win reelection in his October 30 runoff battle against leftist ex-leader Lula.

"Neymar has the right to choose whoever he wants to be president. I think he is afraid that if I win the election I will find out what Bolsonaro pardoned from his income tax debt," Lula said in a YouTube interview on Tuesday. "I think that's why he's afraid of me," Lula added, laughing, when asked about Neymar's support for the president.

Expectations of a close contest have pushed both sides to intensify their attacks before the runoff, with Lula the frontrunner after the first-round election on October 2. "Obviously, Bolsonaro made a deal with (Neymar's) father. He now has an income tax problem in Spain," Lula said, alluding to a favorable ruling the player obtained in a tax evasion trial in Brazil, as well as the charges he faces in Barcelona for alleged irregularities in his 2013 club transfer.

Brazilian presidential candidate Lula da Silva criticises Neymar for Bolsonaro support

Neymar only signed documents his father gave him and did nothing illegal, the Brazil superstar told a Spanish court Tuesday where he is on trial for alleged irregularities over his transfer to Barcelona nearly a decade ago.

"My father has always been in charge" of contract negotiations, the 30-year-old told the Barcelona court hearing the case. "I sign what he tells me to." The trial is the culmination of a years-long legal saga over his 2013 transfer, with Neymar one of nine defendants in the dock on corruption-related charges, among them his parents and their N&N company, which manages his affairs.

The proceedings began barely a month before the November 20 start of the World Cup, at which Neymar is expected to play a key role for Brazil. Dressed in a dark suit and white shirt, the footballer said he didn't remember if he participated in talks leading to a pre-contract deal with Barcelona in 2011 ahead of his transfer two years later from the Brazilian club Santos.

He said he had always dreamed of playing for Barca so he had prioritised their offer over that of other clubs, such as Real Madrid.

"Neymar never takes part in the negotiations," his father Neymar Da Silva Santos told the court.

If convicted, prosecutors have called for a two-year jail term and a 10-million-euro ($9.7 million) fine for the footballer who since 2017 has played for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Prison terms of two years or less are never enforced in Spain for a first-time offender.

- Complicity to defraud -

Investigators began probing the transfer after a 2015 complaint filed by DIS, a Brazilian company that owned 40 percent of the player's sporting rights when he was at Santos.

The firm claims that Neymar, Barcelona and the Brazilian club colluded to mask the true cost of his transfer thereby defrauding it of its legitimate financial interests. Barca said the transfer was valued at 57.1 million euros, with 40 million euros paid to N&N and 17.1 million to Santos, of which 6.8 million was given to DIS.

Spanish prosecutors believe the actual value was at least 83 million euros. Neymar had originally been due to testify later in the month but the court agreed to bring forward his appearance in order to avoid a clash with his busy PSG schedule. After testifying, the court agreed Neymar and his family could return to Paris immediately and take part in the trial's conclusion, expected on October 31, by video conference.

The PSG forward, who scored the only goal of their Ligue 1 match against Marseille on Sunday night, had spent two hours in court on Monday for the opening of the trial but was excused by the judge to allow him time to rest.

- 'Not my responsibility' -

DIS also claims financial harm from the 2011 pre-contract agreement with Barca saying it had impeded other clubs from making offers and affected the value of the transfer fee. But Neymar Sr told the court the talks had been authorised by the Brazilian club at the time and that "it was Santos' responsibility" to inform DIS, and not his.

Other defendants in the dock include two former Barca presidents, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, and ex-Santos boss Odilio Rodrigues Filho. DIS is seeking to recover 35 million euros.

Neymar's lawyers insist their client is innocent, saying the 40-million-euro payment from Barca was a "legal signing bonus which is normal in the football transfer market". The footballer is having one of his best seasons since he joined PSG. His Sunday night goal against Marseille was his ninth league goal of the season, and he has seven assists in 11 Ligue 1 matches.

- Complicity to defraud - Investigators began probing the transfer after a 2015 complaint filed by DIS, a Brazilian company that owned 40 percent of the player's sporting rights when he was at Santos. ALSO READ | Brazil star Neymar arrives at Barcelona court to face trial on fraud and corruption charges over 2013 transfer The PSG forward, who scored the only goal of their Ligue 1 match against Marseille on Sunday night, had spent two hours in court on Monday for the opening of the trial but was excused by the judge to allow him time to rest. - 'Not my responsibility' - DIS also claims financial harm from the 2011 pre-contract agreement with Barca saying it had impeded other clubs from making offers and affected the value of the transfer fee. Neymar is expected to play a key role for Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar, as the South American giants seek to win the trophy for the first time since 2002, and the sixth in total. Brazil striker Neymar denies wrongdoing in court over Barcelona transfer

Brazil is heading towards polls in what experts say is one of the most polarised elections in recent times. Now, candidates Jair Bolsonaro and Lula Da Silva held their first Presidential debate.

Brazil's first Presidential debate: Jair Bolsonaro vs Lula Da Silva

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro and leftist challenger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva exchanged jabs and insults as they faced off in the first head-to-head debate. The debate took place with Brazil's presidential runoff elections two weeks away.

Lula attacked Bolsonaro calling him the "king of fake news" and a "tiny little dictator". In return, he drew accusations of lying, corruption and a "disgraceful record" from his opponent.

Lula is the charismatic but tarnished ex-president (2003-2010) who is eyeing a comeback at the age of 76. He was particularly fiery as he criticised Bolsonaro over handling of the Covid pandemic. 687,000 people died in Brazil due to Covid-19, second only to the US.

Attacking Bolsonaro over his resistance to buying vaccines and touting of unproven medications such as hydroxychloroquine, Lula said the president "carries the weight of those deaths on his shoulders."

"Your negligence led to 680,000 people dying, when more than half could have been saved," the ex-metalworker said in his trademark gravelly voice.

"No other leader in the world played around with the pandemic and with death the way you did."

Bolsonaro (67) tried to drag the debate's focus to the corruption issue. This was a weak spot for Lula who was jailed in 2018 on now overturned graft charges.

"Your past is disgraceful... You did nothing for Brazil but stuff public money in your pockets and those of your friends," Bolsonaro said.

"Lula, stop lying, it's bad for you at your age," said the ex-army captain at another point, simultaneously defending his own record and taking a shot at his rival's age.

Bolsonaro, the vitriolic hardline conservative who took office in 2019, finished second in the first-round election on October 2 with 43 percent of the vote, to 48 percent for Lula.

But many opinion polls had put Lula's lead in the double digits.

Bolsonaro's stronger-than-expected performance has given him an aura of momentum heading into the runoff, and increased speculation over the possibility of another surprise in two weeks' time.

Uncertainty in Brazil, which will hold its Presidential elections on October 30th. Incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro is now in the fight of his political life with former President Lula de Silva.

Brazil Presidential runoff: Will the country see a smooth power transition?

Brazil will hold its Presidential runoff on the 30th of October. Incumbent President Bolsanaro and former President Luis Silva will be competing for the top post after both leaders fail to secure 50 percent vote in the first round of polling.

Brazil Presidential Elections 2022: Lula, Bolsanaro seek new allies

The presidential election in Brazil is turning out to be a cliffhanger with the odds-on-favourite, the leftist former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, faring far worse than expected against the right-wing incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in the first round of voting held on October 2.

Predictably, this has given rise to speculation as to whether Bolsonaro, in the event of losing the election in the run-off to be held on October 30, will lead an ‘uprising” in Brazil much like the attack on the US Capitol instigated by then president Donald Trump in January 2021.

There are many reasons cited for these apprehensions about how the elections in Brazil may end or get upended.

The main reason for the widespread suspicion that President Bolsonaro may cling on to power by any means is that he bagged 43.2 per cent of the votes to Lula’s 48.4 per cent in the first round. This was in sharp contrast to pollsters’ predictions which gave Lula an outright victory with a lead of 10 to 15 per cent.

With the opinion polls turning out to be wide off the mark, Bolsonaro has become more strident in claiming, much like Trump did in the US presidential election, that in a ‘clean’ election, his victory is assured. This suggests that in the event of losing to Lula on October 30, he would persist with accusations of the elections being a fraud and the election authorities having plotted against him. He may seek to re-enact, before the runoff and post-election, exactly what Trump did and spur an assault on Brazil’s constitutional offices.

Bolsonaro may be emboldened in resorting to such tactics by the fact that his conservative coalition is set for a comfortable majority in both chambers of Brazil’s Congress although Lula leads in the presidential sweepstakes.

As for Lula, in the past, he had won his two terms as president in the runoff and not in the first round of voting. Therefore, it should not be surprising if Lula gets the better of Bolsonaro in the runoff this time too.

As matters stand, Lula’s troubles may well begin after the run-off, regardless of whether he wins or loses. Should he win, apart from the threat of an extra-parliamentary challenge that may be mounted by Bolsonaro, Lula would have to contend with his rival’s superior numbers in the Congress. Besides, Lula’s success, in keeping with the wave of Left victories in recent months in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile, may encourage Bolsonaro, aided by powerful external forces, to revive past allegations against him to keep him out of office.

WION Spotlight | Will Bolsonaro do a Trump in Brazil post-election?

As the presidential election in Brazil is headed for a runoff on October 30, the incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro was not the only one who surprised many in the political race as his far-right allies too beat expectations in the race for state governors and Congress. On Sunday, Bolsonaro’s party won most seats in both chambers of Congress.

According to political analysts, these wins could still lead the right-wing to be powerful players in the Latin American political landscape even if Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva beats Bolsonaro in the run-off. On Monday, Bolsonaro took to social media and said, “Against all odds and everyone, we won 2 million more votes this year than in 2018…We also elected the largest benches in the lower house and the Senate, which was our main priority.”

In the 513-member lower house, the right-wing Liberal Party (PL) won 99 seats and the right-leaning parties that are allied with Bolsonaro now control half of the chamber. Meanwhile, in the 81-member Senate, the incumbent president’s party won 13 of the 27 seats that were vacant, with possibly two more second-round runoffs, said the party spokesperson.

In the lower house, the newly elected lawmakers are some of Bolsonaro’s most controversial allies including, former environment minister Ricardo Salles who was accused of presiding over the destruction of the Amazon forest and forced to resign last year, won for Sao Paulo. Additionally, Eduardo Pazuello, ex-health minister and army general who oversaw the country’s Covid-19 response during the worst phase of the pandemic in Brazil where hundreds and thousands of people died, won a seat from Rio de Janeiro.

Reports suggest that Bolsonaro helped elect allies who trailed the opinion polls to the Senate including former ministers Damares Alves and Paulo Pontes. The former (Alves) is an evangelical ally and went on to defeat another candidate from Bolsonaro's own party in the Senate race.

On the other hand, in the lower house, Lula’s Workers Party reportedly won an additional 10 seats and remains the second largest majority with 68 representatives. Therefore, even if Lula wins the presidential race, it would be very difficult to pass legislation from a largely conservative Congress.
