Biden invites Brazil president-elect Lula to visit White House

An irrepressible, irresistible Brazil lit up the night sky on Monday with one of the performances of the World Cup to shred South Korea 4-1 and set up a quarter-final clash with Croatia.

The Brazilians brought a beach soccer swagger to the iconic Stadium 974 with a display that simply overwhelmed the Koreans, and brought an end to Asian hopes at the tournament.

After Japan's penalty shootout loss to Croatia earlier, and Australia's loss to Argentina, it means that all three Asian Confederation teams were eliminated in the first knockout round.

Having failed to score in the first half of any match so far this tournament, five-times champions Brazil corrected that with four goals before the break, to end the match as any meaningful contest early on.

They took only seven minutes to breach the Korean defence for the first time.

Raphina sliced through the red wall -- leaving several of its bricks flailing on the ground -- and, when his cross eluded the closely-marked Neymar, Vinicius Jr was at the far post, a picture of composure, to gently lift the ball over scrambling defenders and the desperately reaching goalkeeper.

If the Koreans were winded by that early blow, worse was to come. Five minutes later Richarlison was hauled down in the penalty box and the referee instantly pointed to the spot.

Up stepped Neymar for a game of cat-and-mouse with Kim Seung-gyu. The Korean stood to the far right of his goal. Neymar waited, smiling. Finally, he trotted towards the ball in his faltering run-up and left the wrong-footed keeper sitting in the middle of his goal as he stroked the ball home for his 76th Brazil goal -- one shy of the great Pele’s international haul.

Brazil were effervescent in attack and organised in defence, restricting the South Koreans to long shots. By the half-hour mark it was 3-0, thanks to one of the best goals of the tournament.

Richarlison won the ball back in an aerial duel, kept it by heading it several times – receiving a head in the face for his trouble – then juggling it with his foot before laying off and, in an astonishing move which scythed the Koreans to shreds, ran onto an incisive pass from captain Thiago Silva to easily beat the goalkeeper.

Lucas Paqueta got in on the act, firing home in the 36th minute for 4-0. Brazil had too much quality up front, and were being given far too much space.

That Brazil went in only 4-0 up was as much to do with their profligacy as anything the Koreans could muster in terms of defence.

With their elaborate goal celebrations, the Brazilians had done more dancing than defending in the opening 45 minutes and the second half followed a similar pattern, with goalkeeper Kim single-handedly denying Brazil another hatful of goals.

The yellow-clad superstars launched wave after wave of attack as a ragged Korea tried to hold on for honour.

A more prosaic side would have added several goals early in the second half, but seemingly you cannot turn Brazil on and off, and chances went begging due to overly elaborate flicks or backheels when the simple solution would have worked best.

It came back to bite them when Korean substitute Paik Seung-ho thundered home a long distance screamer, aided by a slight deflection, to reward the red team for their endless industry with a consolation goal.

Brazil saw the game out – spurning half a dozen good chances before the end – before unfurling a banner of Pele, and dancing once more to celebrate with fans.

FIFA World Cup 2022 is underway in Qatar. Fans are excited as their favourite teams lock horns in a thriller tournament. Now, Brazil is all set to face South Korea in the round of 16.

Qatar World Cup 2022: Brazil to face South Korea in the round of 16

South Korea needed a late victory over Portugal to secure a spot in the round of 16. As they prepare for the significant match on Monday, the two sides have already met on the World Cup stage. We shouldn't anticipate a full-throttle duel in the last 16 meeting given that the teams have never drawn in seven friendly matches. These two sides recently played each other in a friendly, with Brazil crushing South Korea 5-1.

In the shape of Richarlison, Neymar, Philippe Coutinho, and Gabriel Jesus, four different goal scorers scored on the day. South Korea's lone goal that day came from Hwang Ui-Jo as the 2002 semifinalists try to beat Brazil without losing for the sixth time in a row. In the overall 7 competition matches, Brazil had won 6 and South Korea 1.

Group Stage details

Brazil

Richarlison, who also scored the first goal of the tournament thus far, gave Brazil a strong start to their World Cup campaign with a pair of goals. The Samba lads' performance was established by their 2-0 victory over Serbia, but they still had to contend with Switzerland, who lost 1-0 when Casemiro scored the game's lone goal. Tite decided to rest his starting lineup against Cameroon because they had already qualified, and they ended up losing 1-0.

South Korea

Group Stage details Brazil Richarlison, who also scored the first goal of the tournament thus far, gave Brazil a strong start to their World Cup campaign with a pair of goals. South Korea Until Son Heung Min produced a darting move in the 91st minute to set up Hwang Hee-chan for the game-winning goal, South Korea was staring defeat in the face. Now, not only Cameroon needs to win the game against Brazil, it also requires Serbia to beat Switzerland or play a draw in the other match of the group.
Brazil superstar Neymar may have been sidelined from the group stage of the ongoing FIFA World Cup due to an injury but he continues to make the headlines. The Seleção fans are divided on whether to support their star player or not due to his open political support to far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro.

In the lead-up to the World Cup and the Brazilian presidential election, Neymar had promised to dedicate his first goal to Bolsonaro. However, some fans are happy that such a scene may not transpire up until the knockouts at least.

WATCH | Star footballer Neymar backs Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil vote

"I like football, so I want (Neymar) to play because he's good. But I can't say I'm sad he hasn't scored. It's great to see Neymar fail," 29-year-old vendor Tainara Santana was quoted as saying by AFP.

Another Brazilian fan said "the team is missing him [Neymar]" but it is the best result Brazil's had in the World Cup as "we would have had all these Bolsonaro supporters celebrating".

"As a player, Neymar's incredible, he's an artist. As a person, he leaves a lot to be desired. Not just his political opinions, but who he is. Instead of just enjoying his bling lifestyle, he could be investing in education, social projects, setting an example for kids... he could be the man."

Meanwhile, some could not be bothered by Neymar's political beliefs.

"Who cares if he supports Bolsonaro? He's a great player. I'm a huge fan, I love him. I'm rooting for him to recover," said another vendor at Rio's iconic Copacabana beach.

Unlike other football players, Neymar has openly endorsed Bolsonaro after the latter supported him when rape accusations were hurled the footballer's way.

WATCH | Star footballer Neymar backs Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil vote "I like football, so I want (Neymar) to play because he's good. Instead of just enjoying his bling lifestyle, he could be investing in education, social projects, setting an example for kids... he could be the man." Meanwhile, some could not be bothered by Neymar's political beliefs. "Without knowing us personally, (Bolsonaro) showed affection and put his chest and face forward believing in me and now I am doing the same," Neymar said at the time. "I positioned myself and never said it, but in the most difficult moment of my life the president was the first one who publicly said he would be by my side," he added.
