Brazil Riots: President Lula da Silva accuses security forces of complicity

Brazil president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has hinted that the storming of the capital Brasilia by former president Jair Bolsonaro supporters on Sunday could have been an inside job.

Brazil president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has hinted that the storming of the capital Brasilia by former president Jair Bolsonaro supporters on Sunday could have been an inside job. "I am convinced that the door of the Planalto (presidential) palace was opened for people to enter because there are no broken doors. This means that someone facilitated their entry," said Lula while talking to the reporters on Thursday. The far-left leader added that a "thorough review" of palace staff had been ordered to substantiate the allegations. "We will investigate calmly to see what really happened." WATCH | Supporters of Brazil's Bolsonaro storm Presidential palace × What happened in Brazil? Over the weekend, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stumbled into the capital city of Brasilia and attempted a coup to overturn the October election results. The rioters, also referred to as "bolsonaristas" looted offices, destroyed public property, desecrated precious words of art and left ugly graffiti messages calling for a military coup to overthrow the Lula administration. In pictures | A 'sad day' for Brazil as rioters storm government buildings According to local media reports, over 1,000 rioters were arrested initially for storming the Supreme Court of Brazil, the National Congress of Brazil and the Planalto Presidential Palace. Bolsonaro's unruly far-right supporters are following the line taken by their leader who believes that the presidential election was rigged against him as Lula won by a razor-thin margin. The riots by Bolsonaro's supporters have drawn eerie similarities to the January 6 insurrection attempt by former US president Donald Trump's supporters in 2021. Owing to the similarities, the Brazilian lawmakers are willing to join hands with their American counterparts to investigate the riots, according to a Reuters report. Bolsonaro supporters storm Brazil's top government offices

The followers of Brazil's former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro stormed numerous significant buildings in the country, paving way for a full-blown riot, just a week after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a leftist, took office as the new president. Thousands of supporters of Brazil's ex-president Jair Bolsonaro ransacked the nation's Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential buildings in the capital Brasilia on Sunday (8 January) in circumstances disturbingly similar to those at the United States Capitol in Washington DC precisely two years ago.

On Brasilia's enormous Three Powers Square, three buildings that were thought to be mostly vacant were besieged by thousands of protesters who pushed over security barriers, broke windows, and stormed all three. Some of them demanded military action to remove Lula from the presidency or to reinstate the far-right Bolsonaro in his place.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a tweet, raised concerns about the events, and said “Democratic traditions must be respected by everyone.”

Brazil riots explained: Why are Jair Bolsonaro's supporters protesting?

Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has been controversial during his tenure in Brazil's highest office. Now reports that the former Brazilian president left the presidential palace in a 'wrecked' state is further damaging his image after he flew to the US days before the inauguration of Lula to avoid presence at the event after having lost the election.

A report by Brazil's GlobaNews has suggested that former Brazilian president left the presidential palace in a 'wrecked' state.

Palácio da Alvorada (Palace of Dawn), is an architectural marvel.

“The overall state of the building, which is Brasília’s most iconic … is not good … and will require many repairs,” said the news report by GloboNews and reportedly described torn carpets, sofas, broken windows and more.

Bolsonaro left Brasilia on the eve of Brazil's current President Lula da Silva's swearing in. Bolsonaro is currently in Florida. He reportedly fears prosecution for his unscientific approach during the height of Covid pandemic which claimed thousands of lives in Brazil.

As Brazil’s new government held its first meeting on Friday, the new first lady Rosangela “Janja” da Silva said there was major damage, leaks, and missing artwork and furniture at the presidential palace.

She criticised the shoddy condition of the presidential residence in Brasilia, at the end of far-right former president Bolsonaro’s four-year tenancy.

She showed media camera crew torn rugs, damaged floors, a broken window, a ceiling stained by water leaks, a massive banquet hall left bare of furniture and other issues, said a South China Morning Post report.

Brazil's presidential palace, a 1950s masterpiece by architect Oscar Niemeyer, reportedly does not only see damage to the furniture but also to invaluable pieces of art housed within. Some of the artwork is reportedly missing.

A tapestry made by Brazil's most celebrated 20th-century artist Emiliano Di Cavalcanti has been damaged as it has been moved from the library and in the sun. There are speculations that it will have to be restored.
